So does this mean Enrique isn't running the Carrera GT?

it appears so. bummer. it would've been nice to beat it with an economy car! i bet their STi is fastAr anyway.

jon,
i'm shooting to get under a 1:40 for the cars first time out at mid-ohio w/ chicane on street tires and a mild tune. whatcha think? i know you did a 1:34 w/ the ams evo on hoosiers i believe, on a time attack tune probably.

i think if we can't get under 1:40 first time out, we're in trouble.

I just was talking about that with my dad. I did run the 1:34 On hoosiers, but man the track was slow. It was cold and building heat up was an issue. I had run deep in the 1:33s to the timing beacon.. which of course was not at the start line and that lap ended up being disrupted by a lapped car in the final corner.

All that being said, I think the AMS car on a good day had a 1:31 or better in it, and that was at 490whp. (We actually ran about 35 more whp on One Lap, NASA limited us to 500whp)

That compares very close with Autobahn times though, where I ran a 1:38 on my 2nd lap on OLOA last year. Based on that I think you should see sub 1:38s at Mid Ohio w/chicane to put yourself in the top 5 on One Lap, maybe even faster.

I did it in 2003 in the Evo with no safety equipment, and I am not sure I would do it again. Ok.. who am I kidding.. I would.. But I wouldn't like it.

I oversaw the cage build on the AMS evo because I simply wasn't climbing into a car like that without it, especially the way One Lap runs. At Mid America I didn't even get to walk, and the first time I saw turn 5 I was doing 148mph. It's like rally. On Asphalt. With no navigator. :D

On One Lap last year my high trap speeds were this:
Autobahn: 136
Mid America: 148
No Problem:?? Didn't write it down.. it was 5th gear though so probably around 145 I am guessing
Roebling: 158
VIR: 156
Putnam: 134
Road America: 155 (in the wet)

Not speeds and situations I am willing to do without a cage over me. You are going to be like "I can deal with it" but after you have a couple minor slide-offs without it, the thought will creep in.

Well dang, I think Enrique is a very steady driver and could have easily put the Carrera GT in the top 10. The STI is probably faster, if for no other reason that it costs jsut a bit less than the Carrera to fix if it gets stuffed.

More tittywop of car.
racerjon1 04-19-2007 10:53 AM

I will play the One Lap memory game.

2003, going from Road America to Hallett in Tulsa OK. I am sleeping in the back of the Evo as we head across Missouri, and the car owner, David, wakes me up..

David: "Jon, I hate to wake you up but you gotta see this.."
Jon: "Yea, what's up?" (or something much more groggy and mumbly I suppose)
David: about 60 miles ago I was doing like 80mph, (75 zone) and a cop pulled up beside me and turned on his dome light, I thought for sure he was going to pull me over, but he motioned me to follow him, well we have been doing 95 mph now for the last 60 miles with a Police escort"

Sure enough I sit up at that point, and see the highway patrolman out in front of us, leading the way.. and the orange Evo guages showing 95mph.

He led us to the border, waved to us, and turned around..

lucky. all i remember about that transit is almost getting tornadoed on. actually, i think that was the transit after hallet. swirling clouds and hail. it's amazing how many people get through One Lap w/ no police interference. but police assistance, that's sweet.

luke
racerjon1 04-19-2007 11:34 AM

Yea, it was pretty awesome.. There are other types of stories as well I am sure.. but I seem to have good ones.

Last year between No Problem and Roebling, somewhere in Alabama I think we were coming down I-10 and running about 10 over with some other One Lap cars. An unmarked crown victoria came slowly past us, probably doing 3-4mph faster. He gave us a good look, but other than that nothing.

When he was about 6 car lengths in front of us, one of the One Lap Miatas came by us probably doing 90-95.. as soon as he went by the cop, on went the blue lights - for about 1/2 a second.

The Miata slowed down to 10 over, the cop went around him, and kept going.. no pull, no ticket, he just wanted him at 10 over we figure.
lucky. all i remember about that transit is almost getting tornadoed on. actually, i think that was the transit after hallet. swirling clouds and hail.
Actually I think it was both transits. I remember hearing about all the people getting killed, and lookng at the map and saying "Oh man we drove right through all those places last night"

We drove from Road America to Joliet that trip, and dropped off our third driver who had bought an S2000 from the Joliet Honda dealership. While waiting for all the paperwork to be done, I think we missed the bulk of that trips storms.

The next night though, from Hallet To Memphis, it was rough.

Haha.... Tom and I forgot to hook the windshield wiper motor back up when we started driving through that crap. Thankfully I had been rain-x'ing the windshield all week.

(I'll explain - we were using the factory windshield washer as a make-shift intercooler sprayer, and had to disconnect the wipers while on track so we could spray without the wipers running)

Don't sweat that... as great as Brian is, Hennesey hasn't had a car hold together for One Lap since 2000...

2003 was a rough year; we didn't even the headlights on the way in to Memphis because of the nonstop lightning. We made the run to Road America doing 120mph thru torrential rains; George and Steve in the Mustang were behind us, but their 1965 vintage wipers couldn't keep up with the rain, so they just followed our tail lights as a way to navigate. Ah, the memories :D

You guys do in fact know that we are all idiots right?
racerjon1 04-19-2007 05:06 PM

Rankins and I had that discussion yesterday I think.. that doing this event, being willing to do it comes from a mental issue.

I don;t know if that's the case for me. (Of course, all really crazy people think they are sane so take that with a grain of salt)
I grew up going out of town almost every weekend with my dad as he ran 62 mile, 100 mile, 24 and 48 hour footraces. Often weekends meant leaving home after school at 3:30 or so, driving in the car overnight to New York/Missouri/Texas - then him running one of those races, and then driving back home to arrive in time to leave for school at 6am Monday morning.

For me, One Lap isn't *that* big of a deal. I kinda shrug when people say you are going to go how far in what for how long?!?

Come to think of it.. yea I am probably nuts. Back to your reguarly scheduled One Lap stories.

One question...

Are the actual fenders and rear quarters cut away underneath the flares to give more clearance? Or are the spring rates just sooo high that the tires won't rub the fender lips? Obviously the flares cover the wide tires horizontally, but it would seem like vertical clearance would still be a big issue unless the existing wheel well openings were enlarged.

Pat Olsen

Badazzcr 04-23-2007 08:52 AM

I cut 3-4 inches out of the fenders and rolled the wheel well back up and welded it closed again.

I saw a video of the poopra in another thread, and it seems to possibly have a chance if you get kudo points for drifting. Still cooler than me because I'm not driving in the one-lap so I guess I can't hate.

lukerussell 04-23-2007 10:02 AM

1:16 at roebling is smoking fast, even on the new asphalt. i'm not sure the brighton could do a 1:16. actually, i know it can't do it now, but we got 9 days to figure something out. ha!

Jon
S L O W W R X 04-23-2007 10:49 AM

1:16 On street tires is retarded, but Leh can probally run a 1:18 blindfolded
lukerussell 04-23-2007 10:57 AM

sure. the only session i got to actually run, the speedo was slightly over 140. the 18s are slightly taller than the stockers (.4"). i had to brake right after the kink as i had no brakes - as in pedal to the floor, pump, pump, pump, pump, pump, stop. i was slightly quicker than a modified c6 z06 on the straights - but we need to figure out brakes.

so it's not accurate. i would've pulled in but being as the first 2 sessions didn't happen and i knew this third session would be my last (had to catch a plane) and i needed to learn the track - i stayed out there. fyi, we ran the pro course (no chicane) and could only do a 1:39. i think we would've been around a 1:35-6 w/ brakes.

luke
pleiades 04-23-2007 11:23 AM
...... w/ brakes.

luke
Brakes are over-rated! I like turning the car sideways to slow it down.
racerjon1 04-23-2007 12:09 PM

Not bad at all, for comparison we were hitting 158-160 there in the AMS car, but on R-comps, and with brakes I trusted if I kept them pumped up. (was going in to about 380 feet)

We also fought brake issues on the AMS car all year, and people were telling me it was pad kickback. This makes sense as the longer I went without using them, the worse they got..

It came down to every straight I would pump the brakes all the way down it to make sure i had a pedal. If your caliper setup is doing the same thing, that might be the answer.

Yes, it sucks.

Jon K
lukerussell 04-23-2007 12:20 PM
