Prototype Suede STI steering wheel part 1

RaceComp Engineering 09-16-2004 10:28 PM

Prototype Suede STI steering wheel
About 2 years ago when I saw the first pctures of the version 8 STi steering wheel ,..I knew when it , if it,.ever came to the states, that I would want to keep the airbag and yet have a suede wheel. I hav a suede wheel on the racecar, its the best feeling. For anyone who hasnt driven a car with it, its hard t explain, other than, it just feels good. Its like those nasty old shoes that you cant throw away beacause the feel good, except these are'nt nasty. This is out first prototype and are working on more and making it better. I have spoke of doing this for over a year, so here it is, and lower seat brackets to come soon too, for us tall people.

how would u sell these? core charge for the steering wheel or jsut buy one straight up?
CBRDSpeedfactory 09-16-2004 10:47 PM

FINALLY! someone does it before i did!!..
Myles,

awesome idea... I have been bothered by my STi steering wheel, coming from my audi S4... since the actual rim is small in thickness, there isnt enough grip on the perforated leather. I was going to have the rim wrapped in suede (alcantara) also.

Having driven 565hp race cars, I can't stand not having a level of grip on the wheel without having to clench your hands around it tightly....

I am definetly in line for this if you are going to offer it. Shoot me an email.

well, the objective is to have the custmer without their wheel for less than 2 days. I ship the new one when you ship yours, minues the airbag,k but with the cruise control. Of coarse you could but the whole thing, but its gonna be aot more. Price to be deteremined soooooooon.

GTScoob 09-17-2004 05:32 AM

whats the deal on the seat brackets?

I'm a fairly tall guy (6'9") and wouldnt mind a bit more leg room/head room.

Both you NBA guys just need a more supportive back seat !!!! , no seriously,.I am 6.3 and with helmet on, its unsafe if something were to happen in that car, or when instructing at the track. So both you NBA guys need brackets that are al nut on the floor. Our brackets are still a little ways off, but I'll post the 1.5 drop version soon.

ps. I was just kidding, I dont want to be at a major event, and have some 6.9 dude roll up on me !!

jonney_boy 09-18-2004 01:14 PM

Just curious, would these wheels be really hard to maintain and keep clean?
RaceComp Engineering 09-18-2004 01:57 PM
Just curious, would these wheels be really hard to maintain and keep clean?
Well thats the thing, I dont put lotion on before I drive, or all that will be absorbed into the SUEDE, which yes, will try to smooth out to leather. So its like anything else, you have keep it clean, by making sure your hands are clean. Oh that greasy handed tech that works on your car, or your wife who likes to take lotion baths,...nope, they cant touch your wheel, or they'll create work for you. Take a suede brush and bring it back. ITs not a big desal, its just some people are cleanr than others. I make my son wash his hands before he eats and etc, so I tend to be neat, or try to at least.

Well I thought id throw a question in there, I'm interested in replacing the stock steering wheel for an 02 WRX but havent been able to find the perfect match, I love the MOMO Millenium EVO steering wheel however I wanted a blue/black combo for the rest of the interior and would like the wheel to match. So I was wondering if you would be able to implement blue suede onto this particular steering wheel??
dchou 09-18-2004 08:17 PM

Does the wheel have to covered in real suede or can you guys also use Alcantara(synthetic suede) like in a BMW? The alcantara is much easier to clean just a damp rag will do the job.

Yes, we could do the blue ,a s long as we can find that exact color. So I ask sometimes that people provide the materials, and that helps alot. So yes, we could.

We are reviewing these options now, and will have a suede alternative. So yes this too is an option. All options are not created equal so we have to look at from a longevity standpoint etc.....

Very interested. How would sueding-up the dash work? would not be just a cover? Thanks
Very interested. How would sueding-up the dash work? would not be just a cover? Thanks
Well, the request we have had so far have been race teams, so they want alcantara and the dash is stripped, and most then want the CF version covered in aLcantara....so it gets tricky.......I will do mine in alcantara due to the sun and fading.
