Seatbelt squeaks as you pull to fasten it part 1

Seatbelt squeaks as you pull to fasten it
Just checking in to see if anyone else has this annoying problem. Everytime I pull the seatbelt to fasten it, it squeals/squeaks/whistles really loud...and since it's right next to the ear, it compounds the annoying factor. I'm pretty sure that it has to do with the seatbelt rubbing against the plastic guide it slides through and the obvious solution would be to oil it. But that would result in your clothes becoming stained and such.

I've lived with it for thousands of miles now and just seeing if others are just living with it or have found some kind of miracle fix :)

[B]The fix can be found here (or scroll down to Post #50):

I have it on my drivers belt on my 04 wrx
jlitch 09-14-2004 10:34 AM

both my wrx and my STi do this
Hank3 09-14-2004 10:39 AM

Blah - this is kind of bittersweet I guess. It's good that others have the problem, but it stinks that we all have to hear/endure it. Only fix for me is to pull it like granny pace

Really not a biggie I guess to spend maybe one extra second to pull it slower, but it does get annoying when you do it fast and that noise is there to remind you to pull it slower
Beeker 09-14-2004 10:45 AM

mine driver side in my 04 STI does it also
WRXPRESS 09-14-2004 10:49 AM

my '04 STi does this too...
darknightohio 09-14-2004 11:07 AM

Have the same problem. Oh well. Anyone else have the problem of the interior door handle gets scratched really easily?
cool555 09-14-2004 12:28 PM

Im not sure if this is the same problem, but I told my dealer abt the squeaky sound while pulling the seatbelt...and they ordered a new seatbelt - it was covered under warranty, so its just the hassle of getting it done. The seatbelt was installed w/ the recall of the left seat rail bolt.
smurfette04 09-14-2004 12:39 PM

My driver side belt does the same thing in my 04 but only if I pull it really fast. Not that annoying. But I have noticed that the door handle does get scratched easily.
Fusionpnoy 09-14-2004 12:43 PM

I have the same problem, it is annoying, but whatever, if I have to lose out on something, might as well be this.
nimaxpro 09-14-2004 12:49 PM

Same thing here...But it only started doing this after ~13K (17K now). It's definitely the plastic guide thingy....
Now that we all agree that it's poor design, what can be done about it?
smurfette04 09-14-2004 12:53 PM

im sure ur dealership would fix it if you asked.
Shadowbaron 09-14-2004 01:07 PM

Likewise, 04 WRX, driver side belt squeaks.

They'd probably charge an arm and a leg to fix it (if there is indeed a fix) as mine is out of the 36K BTB Warranty...
Phat04WRX 09-14-2004 02:17 PM

I have the same problem on my04 drivers side it sux
Hummer 09-14-2004 03:39 PM

My drivers side does it as well. I am very happy considering this is my only problem after 15 months and 15K miles.
occytron wrc 09-14-2004 04:58 PM

My driver side does it. Not sure about the passenger side. Just started recently, maybe 2000 miles ago(car has 12,500)
dcoty 09-14-2004 07:01 PM

Driver side on my STi does it too...loud!
Dan:)
reno_bk 09-14-2004 07:05 PM

Both front's do it on my 04, but only when it's warm outside. It never does it in the garage, but as soon as the interior heats up the seatbelts squeek. Tres annoying, but I hate to leave it at the dealer for this. I'll have it addressed at the 30k mile service.

Sounds good, I'll do the same.

what recall? i dont know of any recall. what is the specifics of the recall?
what recall? i dont know of any recall. what is the specifics of the recall?
The recall only affects 02'-03' models so your 04' model is ok I believe. Plus, you would've received a letter from SOA :)

Here's a thread on it if you're interested in some reading:

BlueRSGirl 09-14-2004 09:20 PM

My passenger belt makes that noise, and I'd just live with it, but needless to say, my passengers don't know to pull slowly. I need to get the bolt recall, maybe I'll take care of the belt as well.
AWD2seater 09-14-2004 10:52 PM

Mine does it when it's cold..:)
Uncle Scotty 09-15-2004 12:33 AM

I roughed up the plastic guide on the seat where it squeaks with an emery board and it stopped.....
BlueWRXagon 09-15-2004 05:19 PM

Silly enough, but I squirted some WD40 into the circular loop glide, and although there is no hinge-type mechanism there, the sqeak seems to have subsided. Maybe that will help.

I did this at one point (thousands of miles ago) and it did help like you said, but the sound came back. I had to make sure I did it on the weekend so I could wear some crummy shirts while driving so the WD-40 wouldn't go on my work shirts :)

Mine does the same thing, only when I go out to my car after work does it make the squeak noise, or after my car has been sitting outside for a while. In the morning after sitting in the garage it doesn't make the noise. Heat definitely has something to do with it.
like_mad 09-15-2004 10:12 PM

mine does it no matter how slow i pull it
Turbo9000 09-15-2004 10:23 PM

I hear you can use bar soap too.
raw_speed 09-28-2004 08:16 AM

Mine does it constantly. As long as I am wearing it, it squeaks. VERY annoying  . Has anyone else tried the "rough up" method?

Holy crap, i have the same frickin problem. I thought i was the only one. It squeaks right by my ear and pretty loudly where it clicks to the buckle by my waist. :furious:
draggin wagon04 09-28-2004 01:39 PM

Replace it with a JDM one... It's way better

Just kidding around. Mine squeaks too.
4830DeuceWRX 09-28-2004 01:40 PM

I had the same problem, I took the bottom plastic piller off and cut off the peice of plastic the rubs the seatbelt, seemed to take care of it. but not its happening to my pass. side. :(
sideman7 09-28-2004 02:05 PM

Mine does it too, but generally only if the inside of the car is over 120...
Hank3 09-28-2004 04:34 PM

I think I'll try the bar of soap idea; at least it'll leave a stain (if any at all) that I can clean off :)
remowgn 09-28-2004 06:31 PM

Yup, mine does it too. Just getting annoying enough for me to try to fix it. I've got 20k on my car, does it pretty much every time, regardless of weather.

My bad...;)
fragment 09-29-2004 12:09 PM

I spent about 15 hours on this. I am very sensitive / easily annoyed by squeeks, rattles etc.

This is my fix.

Buy some "low friction tape" (thats what Lee Valley calls it, but others might call it teflon tape, but its not the stuff you use to seal threads) and apply it to the back of the plastic cover where the seatbelt makes contact. There is a horizontal rib about halfway down the cover that turned out to be the culprit. I had tried most of the other contact points, and the tape made no difference until I covered that one rib. Perfect silence. I wish I had taken a pic, but I didn't think anyone else would be bothered, since it seems like most guys here like loud exhausts.
MdWRX 09-29-2004 12:40 PM

Both of mine squeked also, So I took off the plastic pillar shield to find out what could be causing it. There is a rid at the top that sticks out too far so I took a dremel and cut just a little bit off, you don't need to remove much, and put it back on and it has never squeked since.
Scav1180 09-29-2004 01:07 PM

oo imma try that tonight.. I tried looking for where the squeak was coming from but no luck..
Hank3 09-29-2004 01:18 PM

The fix is on the loop part where the belt slides through correct?
fragment 09-29-2004 01:54 PM

No, not the loop part. The "B" pillar lower plastic cover; the part that covers the lower seat belt mechanisim. My loop part was kinda dirty, and I cleaned it thinking that would fix the problem, but it didn't make any difference.
Hank3 09-29-2004 02:02 PM

Hmmm...my noise is coming directly from where the seatbelt rubs against the loop.
fragment 09-29-2004 02:20 PM

Since I didn't want to take things apart twice, I put a strip of tape on the loop part too. But I'd try washing it first since there might be a build up of oils or something...
Hank3 09-29-2004 02:27 PM

Good idea...I'll try to get something in there to clean it. There's barely any room to work between the belt and the loop :furious:
MdWRX 09-29-2004 08:58 PM

I pulled mine off a few times before I actually figured out how I was gonna fix it. When I first took it off it was dirty so i cleaned it and it kinda helped, but it came back. So that's when i decided to trim the rib back some. You'll be able to see it if you take the cover off, right close to the top, the squeak i guess is just how the fabric of the seat belt rubs against that little strip of plastic so if you trim it back the seat belt won't be able to rub at all and thus stops the squeak.
Hank3 09-30-2004 10:22 PM

Fixed the annoying squeak/whistling sound
Following the suggestions and successful attempts from "fragment," "MdWRX," and "4830DeuceWRX," I spent some time tonight trying to fix this. I first took off the piece (lower piece to the B-pillar) they both had mentioned:

When I took it off, I pulled the seatbelt numerous times and the noise was not there. So my inkling all along was wrong. It was not the loop piece that the seatbelt slides through. It is indeed one of the ridges, the biggest one at that, behind the piece.

Like "MdWRX," I also dremeled the ridge and then sanded it so it was smooth (or you can use tape to cover the ridge, but sound may come back). Here is the result:

So there you have it...no noise at all anymore and the fix was very easy

Huge props to the members who led me to the true culprit. I was incorrect with what I thought was the problem. Anyways, I hope whomever has been following this thread will find it beneficial. I know I have :)
Agent_50 09-30-2004 11:11 PM

This appears to be a very common issue, as my 04 does it too.

Hank3 10-13-2004 11:46 PM
How does that piece come off?

Sean
You'll need to pull up the front door sill and the rear door sill. Keep in mind there's a little clip for the rear door sill up by where the hinge is to the rear door. Once you have both door sills pulled up, it'll be pretty easy to get the lower B-pillar piece off.
SeaRex 10-14-2004 01:20 PM

Thanks.

im suprised on how people post miles when this problem has been there since the car got off the lot?!?!

flyinpig 08-01-2005 04:45 PM

Found this thread thru a search. My seatbelt has squeaked for a few months now - when I pull it on and going over bumps. Very annoying and I couldnt figure out the cause.

So just the pictures above, I cut off the top ridge and the sqeak is now gone :D

Thanks to all that contributed~
