I started making a write up. for how I did it. I took lots of picture while I was going through the whole thing. I'll post when I'm done.
but as far as parts. I just used about 25 super bright blue LEDs that I got on eBay and a resistor for each arround 330ohm that I already had (I'm a bit of an electronics hobbiest). asside from that I just needed a little solder and electrical tape and about 4" of wire to do the lock button in the door.

It would be pretty hard... you'd have to take the instrument cluster apart and take the face material off, then somehow remove all the green tint that's on the back side of the numbers.
At one point I had no colored covers on my bulbs, and the instruments were still green.
Also, I doubt you'd be able to get the instruments white and the needle red, since they're both lit by the same bulbs...

I just received most of the bulb covers from partsexpress and hopefully soon the rest will come. Before I begin this process, should I disconnect the battery? Also, is there potential for wiping out the odometer when I disconnect the instrument panel to pull it out?
Thanks

Yes, you should disconnect the battery's ground. (Even tho I didn't and nothing broke).
The trip odometers will be reset... the main odometer is stored in non-volitile memory, and will be okay.

It will be brighter, but not as red. The green film on the instruments will tint the red as well as the fact that lightbulb light is actually more yellow that white. Single condoms look more orange than double condoms.

Can anyone tell me what size screw driver is needed to disassemble the radio circuit board to get access to the bulbs? I have some flat head jewler screw drivers, but none will work. The screws are tiny phillip heads. Like to know so I can buy the right size.

That's kinda cool... still trying for the majority of inner light on mine for blue... but painting/lighting interior is the last thing I'm gonna do :-/ edit- accidently hit reply before I was done :p Has anyone tried the blue blue covers recentely... they look darker on the page than they used to... Wondering if they improved it... used to be kind of a baby blue instead of a brighter more vivid blue.

A bit of a twist... sorry, it's a long one
I used Krylon faux stained glass paint (red) to cover my bulbs (after removing their condoms.) HVAC is fantastic, but the main dash was horrid with that green background. So, I ripped off the faces, and used paint stripper on the backs of them... perfect.. just be careful not to get it on the front.
Even so, I really miss those yellow needles. Tomorrow the plan is to clean off my dash bulbs and return them to white... ripping off the clock faces again and painting the backs of them (masking around the needle holes of course - so white light can light the yellow needles) with the same translucent stained glass paint. I have high hopes for this fixing the lack of consistancy in brightness by matching subaru's pattern of shading on the backs of the clocks.
I took care of my stock Subbie boost gauge by running a screwdriver in circles between its metal interior bezel and the rubber exterior housing... all the while pushing from the rear. Pops right out after about 10 min of cursing and swearing. One bulb.. blue condom... I'd say about the size of the small dash bulbs. I highly recomend paint over a condom on this one... cuz condom color isn't adjustable. Too light and you've got pink boost... too dark and you can't see the allready red boost needle.
I tried reading the entire thread, but I'm new here and did a bit of skimming. Anyway, I didn't notice anyone saying that there is indeed a green translucent piece of plastic behind your odometer LCD that can be removed to help you get the color you're looking for. I went for bright white by blueing the bulb behind. I assume this is a similar setup to the stereo?
Anything I can do with my clock?

I ran down to the local university drama department and asked them for a couple blue light gels (they gave me used ones for free!). After taking the green bulb condoms off I cut the gels out to slide behind the gauge faces. It worked like a charm, and since there had to be a hole in the middle for the needles the needles still show up yellow (a little bit darker yellow than they used to, but still yellow)
The only thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to change the odometer light to blue
BTW, I tried this same method on the hvac and radio but it didn't work...they turned out uneven blue/purple, so I used your paint idea for those and it worked much better.

Ok, I figured it out, but I had to take the needles off to do it  If you can do this same thing w/out taking the needles off I reccomend it.
after I took off the needles and speed and tach faces I took a jewlers sized flat head screwdriver and CAREFULLY bent the odometer plate down from the top about 30 degrees. Don't worry, the odometer plate will automatically spring back in place when you let it go. I held the plate forward and slid out the green film behind it. Then I cut a piece of blue film to fit the space and slid it into place. Then I just put everything back together.
I'm confused though. Even though I used the same film I used on all of the dash lights it turned out much darker, almost violet on the odometer. Maybe it's because the other gauges have a slight green tint to begin with.
I may try again tomorrow night with the green back in with the blue, or try a lighter color film.
BTW the odometer shines orange/yellow w/out any film.

anyone fix the bulbs being to dark problem?
I have been reading this thread for a while, and slowly working on my light switch. I got the stero all done with blue LEDs, and I am working on the dash with condoms. I tried the blue condoms, but they were way to dark. I switched over to 1 Red Condom on Each of the Temp/Fuel Gauges. Also, i placed one red condom on the two HVAC bulbs.
THe HVAC came out great. One condom on each of the bulbs is a nice red.
The Temp/Fuel gauges are still really dark. Anybody have a suggestion? I have been considering the stained glass paint from the local arts & crafts store, but havent gotten around to trying it.
Anyways, if anybody has any suggestions, i would love to hear them.

The stereo LEDS look GOOD!!!!
| gonzosquirrel | 06-27-2003 07:16 PM |
hmmmm...
I followed Captain Morgan's directions to the T. I even used some of the other posted pictures to make sure I was doing it correctly.
The LEDs in the stereo LCD screen work perfectly!
But, the other 5 LEDs for the control buttons don't work at all. I tested them with a multimeter. Fine. I tested them by applying 12 volts to the harness attachement at the base of the circuit board. Fine. But when I plug the circuit board into the Head Unit, nothing from those 5 LEDs. The two in the LCD light when the radio is on, and are adjustable via the dimmer switch when the headlights are on. But still nothing from the other 5 LEDs.
I jury rigged the system by soldering a bypass wire into the harness from the dimmer controlled accesory wire (for the triple guages I think) and they work when the headlights are turned on, but they are not adjustable like the LCD screen ones.
Help!!! Where is my mistake?

I am going to be trying this with my 04 wrx this week. I have a few questions... Are leds the only way to get the LCDs to change or will condoms work? I'm also not sure what colors to do since I already have the red needles. I'm thinking red with blue on the dash, and red for the redio and hvac. Will condoms work on the radio???
Thanks,
Ben
Also any general stores that might have condoms so that I can get them for this weekend?

I've been wanting to put blue LEDs in all my stuff for a while (I have a 98), I'm going to start on some of it tonight, I'll post how it goes.
My idea is this:
First, I'm going to use my multimeter to test the voltage going to the bulbs in the climate controls. I'm assuming its 9.5v, seems like I read that earlier in this thread, but maybe its not. The LEDs i'm using only have a 30degree viewing angle. The climate controls only have a few bulbs, with plastic that sort of "routes" the light around, but if the LEDs are placed facing up (perpendicular to the board) then they will barely light up anything. I thought I could put foil over to help reflect the light around, but I thought of an even better idea. Assuming that there is room to do this, which there may not be:
Instead of getting a resistor and a single LED to replace each bulb, I will wire a set of 3 LEDs in series for each bulb. That way (assuming the voltage is 9.5 volts, or anywhere near that) each LED will have a little over 3 volts, and I can position them sideways so they shine RIGHT in to the plastic. Might be too bright, I'll see how it goes. But again, not sure if theres room or not, but I'll post how it goes!

Better yet, arrange the LEDs so they reflect off the white refelctor by attaching them to the front cover of the A/C controls. This allows many LEDs for lots fo light, and no hot spots:

hey, that ain't a bad idea, and it works good too!
I started on my CD player last night. Basically took it apart, and scratched my head a bit, got tired and went to bed. But today, I did some real work on it.
I only replaced two of the lights so far, I think theres like 5 more. The first one, I just took out the old bulb, and soldered in a replacement LED with a resisitor on it. I realised there was NO way I could do the arrangment thing in there like I though, cause the bulbs had holes JUST big enough to go into. I was like, crap, now what? Wish I would've spent the extra money to get the frosted LEDs....light bulb!(meaning a great idea, not an actual light bulb) I stopped being an idiot, and just sanded the LEDs. I used some fine grit sand paper, and sanded them so they were TOTALLY frosted, that helped SO much. They still shine a lot more out the top, but a lot more light comes out the side now!
So I was going to replace a second one. But I didn't really like how the resistor had to be soldered right to the LED, so the LED can't sit flush on the board. Its all tilted, and is kinda hard to get it to go into the hole in the light reflector thingy. So I followed the path from the first LED, to where the next one was going, found two holes in the path, scratched away the part connecting the two, and soldered a resistor in there! Looked great!!!! Didn't work at all. So I thought maybe I wasn't careful enough, and got the LED reversed, so I took it out and flipped it....nope. In fact, all of the other lights were out, except the first LED...strange. So I checked things with my multimeter......supposedly power was going right to the LED and everything was connected fine....still have no idea why it wasn't working, but I just took it out, fixed the part that I scratched off by soldering in a short wire, and put the LED in the crappy way (with the resistor soldered right too it). Then it worked fine, but I had to go to work, so I put it all back together and I'll finish it tonight.
But just my luck, once it was all back together, one of them went out....I'm guessing when it was forced into its hole, it got leaned over to far, and some wires are touching, I just have to tape everything up so nothing can touch. I test lit everything up last night, and it looks soooooooooo slick!!!!! I'll finish my CD player tonight, and maybe do my climate controls.

So how do you change the stock boost gauge so that it is also red?
I have two red bulb condoms on each bulb for my cluster and HVAC does anyone have a pic of what it would look like with just one condom on them... I am afraid that if I take them off again it will rip.... I only have a few left so I don't want to take them off unless it is going to be worth it...
Thanks,
-Nigel

$55 and about 12 hours of work, and the job is done! Using CaptainMorgan's guide I was able to put in LEDs in the stereo and HVAC, with absolutely no experience with soldering. Not something I suggest everyone go running out to do! You seriously need sharp close range vision, very good hand-eye control, and lots of patience. Too a long time, but I could certainly do it quicker now that I know what I'm doing. Only big problem I had was with the LCD display bulbs. The guide isn't very clear about what to do with the resistors. I eventually figured out what to do though, although I thought the idea was insane as I was doing it.
Looks much better than stock IMO! Haven't seen anyone around here with this done, so I feel special!
Thanks to CM for making that guide!

this mod has destroyed everything :( i somehow blew the ps to the illumination on the stereo from the power draw so now i have to wire in a voltage separator to drop the power to 9v then wire that to the face

^^^^
?!?
How did you end up doing that?!?
I can't really see how one could kill the power supply, although not entirely hard to solder or miscut the circuit board.

i dont know but it happend, i blew one face, and the second one is still in the making, i have to unravel all my stuff tonite and solder in a different resistor on my separator the stupid board cant handle 6v it wants 9 picky biaatch

sheesh, lots of drama with this mod! I'm real happy with mine, except that one of the LEDs went out the other day, but I think thats just because I did a REAL bad job with the resitor, so the LED sits real cocked to the side. Really had to force it to fit in the clear reflector part, and I probably disconnected the...um...connection...... or something, I don't know. I still haven't gotten around to trying out the LEDs for my gauges. Not sure if that'll work all that well or not, I just want my indiglos back! (they died after a year, stupid ebay cheap-o's!!!)

LOL
I had been planning to do this for months, just never got around to it until last week. Never soldered a thing in my life, and I did it quite well! :)
Sort of considering the idea of doing this mod for people for $110 or so. Just not sure if I really want to do this again! I'm thrilled to be done with mine and never have to look at the inside of it again! To do it for somebody else? :o

no offense to anyone but this is like a 10 dollar mod, if it works properly ofcourse
110 is a bit much but if u can get it :) go for it i guess i probably would

Well, I for one got the parts from Radio Shack, as mentioned in the guide from CaptainMorgan...
9 bulbs @ $3.99 each
2 5-pack 330ohm 1/4 watt resistors @ $0.99 each
Solder was like 2.99 as was desolder.
2 replacement bulbs ended up costing me even more $$ as I mentioned before. (about $55 to $60 in the end)
Yeah, you can get the LEDs cheaper online though, or so I've heard. I figure at what it cost me, $110 - $55 leaves $55, - return shipping... Say $10 for insured and all... $45. $45 for what is about 5 hours of personal time, working on a circuit board, with little space. $9/hour for labor if only 5 hours.
That's how I came up with $110
now bulb condoms on the other hand... That's super cheap, and wouldn't be worth charging anyone! Just give me some bulb condoms and 25 minutes! :D

$110? jesus. If you supply me with the LEDs and resistors, and pay for shipping, I'll do it for free. I just did FiDRcr's cd player, and it turned out GREAT! He can vouch for me. So if anybody wants it done, drop me a PM. I do good work! He sent me some pics, but they're only in my email and I'm at work right now. I'll get them uploaded and post them so you guys can see!

does anyone have good results from changing the cluster to blue? If you did what did you use LEDs or blue bulb condoms? If you can could you please post pics of it?
thanks!
thanks!

What if you just want to do the climate gauges, how would you go about doing this?
Thanks

Well, the blue condoms just make a teal color, i did this on my radio. and i think it looks like dog dodo. I am waiting for some red ones and i think i will do a sudo STI look.

has anyone done that one mod to the LEDs where you file the dome of the LED with a dremel or something to make it flat a frosted?
Will this work for the guage cluster?
Will this work for the guage cluster?
| twizzstyle | 10-02-2003 10:28 PM |
When I do my LED conversions, I just sand the LED down with some REALLY course sand paper. LED's are very directional, so you really want it frosted GOOD. Not just lightly frosted, but nice and rough. Not jagged, but you get the idea. That spreads it around nicely. But not just the "dome", you want to sand the entire LED.
| JaySee | 10-03-2003 12:53 AM |
On the climate controls, is there any way you can just make everything red or blue EXCEPT the temperature guage. I'd like to keep the blue to red for temperature.
| Genner | 10-03-2003 01:54 AM |
so it is possible to get good results in the guage cluster by sanding down the domes of the led?
Pictures would be great!

I personally haven't done my gauges yet. I used to have indiglos, but those died, so I'm back to the ugly green (have a 98L).
On the climate controls (on my car anyways, WRX is probalby similar) there are only 2 bulbs that light up everything. So if you want it all blue or whatever, pretty much everything turns blue. The red turns purpleish. But mine are VERY dim. I think I might try something with a lot more LEDs and mounting them different. As it is now, I soldered a resistor on to each LED, and then plugged the LED/Resistor combination in the light socket just like a bulb. Easy install, but bad lighting.

Well, I used the LEDTronics 14v LED's in my HVAC (02 WRX); gotta say it doesn't look so good. Those guys are just too narrow and dim. Did my stereo using the Radio Shack LED's and it is much, much better so I'm gonna do the same for the HVAC. Haven't tried the dash with the LEDTronics bulbs yet; anyone had luck with that? Is it gonna turn out any better than the HVAC? Or should I just suck it up and go for some reverse indiglos?
