PhilC 07-13-2005 11:49 AM

We're at the Hampton, racking up more Hilton Honors points.

I think I'll be there. I mean, I'm signed up and all, but my ride has decided not to attend. :furious: Anyone with a competitive DS (1st choice) or ESP (2nd choice) ride want/need a codriver?

I'll try to make it but right now TEIN wants 1500 for the rebuild of the RA's. So we are going to go a different route.

apparently we drove around on them long enough to destroy much of the internals metal parts. they appear to be made from kryptonite enclosed in a platinum casing.

I actually started laughing at teh guy when he told me the price thinking he was joking because we had an ongoing discussion about them before they arrived. Then when he said it again I started to see the auto-x season go bye bye.

Ah Karen, that sucks! You do at least have 2 events in DS to qualify for the Finale, right?

I'm on the fence. Never run a Pro before, but it's probably the best place to try one since I always have a place to stay and drink....

Yikes! For a little more than the cost of a revalve, you could buy some used coilovers. Or better yet, buy some used ones and have them revalved instead. That would still be quite a bit cheaper. Or just buy some used ones to run the rest of this season, and have them revalved for the next season.

If you're interested in JICs, I've got a pretty lightly used (maybe 5-7k road miles) set lying around. I've also got a set of Tein HAs to sell as well but I'm not sure about if/when to sell them yet. :)

Yeah, but with a 3rd and a 4th, why bother? I really needed that set of runs on Sunday morning at Oscoda to be dry; the learning curve on the TypeR was steeper than I anticipated (especially with the need to downshift). I figure one more attempt at DS, or try for something in L2 (hence the ESP ride request)... I really don't want to do the L2 thing though. What I end up driving at Toledo determines whether I do the Finale, and whether I bring my own car to Topeka. If I don't do the Finale, I'll just drive my car out that weekend. Otherwise, I'll fly.

You do have a point there. Cars without suspension at all, or using hockey pucks as springs, like the F500 cars do seem to love Toledo. Except for the sandpaper like concrete ripping tires to shreds I'd imagine Stompy just loves that surface. I'm just hoping that the courses Robert puts together for the Pro are good ones and help drive the memory of the Tour courses out of people's head. I like a Pro and a Tour less than an hour and a half from my house and don't want to lose either.

10 more years on that surface and it might have some good grip instead of having to read threads all the time with comments like "Grips like Toledo" from KC  .

I have to admit I really liked the way the car was handling on the Toledo surface. It was really easy to feel the car and I liked the response I was getting. Then of course it rained and I forgot how to drive. I look forward to the next time I go there. Be it in teh WRX or in a shfiter kart.

But... but... but... it's concrete! ;)

--kC
solo-x 07-17-2005 06:43 PM

really grippy concrete. i don't know why there is a difference in a opinion here. every time i run there i need more front camber, more front tire pressure, and more shock on both ends. remember, if you already lift the inside rear on low grip surfaces, the car is going to push more as grip increases. might be why a lot of people think there is no grip cause the dang car won't turn. my car is very sensitive to grip levels and if toledo had low grip my car would be unpossible to drive, ie, loose as ****!

If you're in the midwest region and missed this Pro... sign up for the Midiv Championships this weekend. It's in Topeka on Forbes Field!
typer_801 08-01-2005 02:46 PM

It's slightly grippier than good asphalt, but not nearly as grippy as good concrete. In fact I did loads of testing at Peru, then came out to Toledo and the car was crazy loose. The concrete in Toledo definitely offers more grip than I remember a few years ago, but is still far from Topeka or Peru levels.

Yeah, that's really how I remember it a couple years ago ('03) when I went out. Just a little grippier than good asphalt... but not so much as Topeka/Peru.
TRBOBLU 08-01-2005 04:33 PM

Our surface out there used to be very dusty, and it seemed like we could never get rid of it. It often was necessary to run in the latter half of the day to get good grip.

Luckily, it's not like that anymore. In addition to the Tour and Pro, we are having 4 regional events there this year, and in the beginning, we were hearing the same disparancy between people either feeling it had a ton of grip, or no grip at all.

Now that I've driven the WRX on Azenis and a CRX on Kumho 710s, I can definitely say that the tires seem to be causing the difference. If you look at the surface closely, the concrete has tiny ridges throughout its length. The theory has been that a softer race tire will actually "squish" into these grooves, effectively increasing the gripping surface of the tire. On a harder street tire, you don't get this same benefit.

The course is all set to go, and we'll be setting it up on Thursday. It has passed the new "nationals must approve" step, so everyone should like it (theoretically.....).

R compounds rubber has a lower elasticy than a street tire, so they should see less of drop off, if any, when compared to street tires on that surface. Curious to see this time around what happens.
KC 08-04-2005 12:22 PM

I wsa there in 03 on streets in the wagon (Azenis)

I'm there on Rs with the 8 (710s)

Could be very interesting. If it's anything that I'm thinking it's going to be, it's going to be one wild ride. :D

trhoppe 08-06-2005 11:35 PM

Looks like Corey is checking out in STS by 1.1 secs after Saturday runs, Mike King likewise in STX by 0.8ish.

Chang Ho Kim in the civic is 0.8 back of mikey and I *know* he is losing way more then that at the line. Look out at nationals.

Also, whats up with the CS protest of Wooten's car? Everyone always said "that car is *really* fast in a straight line". Any good inside info on that?

working on race car this weekend
dwx 08-07-2005 08:33 PM

Werd, I'm sick of working on the race car...

Looks like KC pulled it on the final two runs and beat Strano for 1st in BS. Congrats.

Corey in 2nd behind Hollis who ran a ton faster on Sunday...

Mike King almost a second ahead of Chang Ho Kim.

Tunnell beat Daddio, although it looks like Daddio would have won on raw time. I still think Daddio has some more work to do on that car to be competitive on a regular Solo2 course with Tunnell, Sias, & Reitmer.

Gary Godula won the challenge in a CM car, that musta been interesting to watch.
jcroy66 08-07-2005 09:16 PM

As Daddio mentioned, the results don't show just how fast his RL run was (red by a hundreth or two I think). I think he said it was approximately 1.5 seconds faster on that side...
PhilC 08-07-2005 09:49 PM

Hey, I took third in STX how come no one mentions me? We were on an all new setup this weekend, the Konis are finally in the front and we switched to Yoks for this event. Steep learning curve but for the first time this year I think the car is actually not borked so we can focus on tuning it.

At any rate....Mike stomped us all in STX, he's definitely better at learning an all new setup than I am. Mike lost to Gary by .1 in the challenge. Mike's back seemed to be killing him by the end of the day, STX suspension even on the smooth Toledo concrete seems to be bad for a bad back.

Tom: Mike is nice to our car, he never turned faster than a 1.90 60' all weekend even though both Jen and I had no problems with low 1.8s. Chang was getting 2.2s if I remember right so .6+ at 60'. Chang isn't going to bring that car to Nationals, he has to run Tuesday Wednesday this year because of other commitments. Kind of bummed about that because I really would like to see what a true STX Civic can do. Chang made a significant change to ride height for today, his car still has a lot of development time to go I think and he'll make it a lot faster as I'm not sure he has wrung all he can out of it. Mike had him after the first slalom and into the first corner but Chang had caught up by the end of the second slalom. What kept Mike ahead was the sections of the course that followed where our power came into play a bit. On a more wide open course I think the power will come into play even more. Plus I think Mike really wasn't terribly happy with our tire choice for this weekend.

Wooten's Saturday afternoon runs were DSQ'ed because he didn't bother to show for his work assignment not because his car was protested. Sunday morning Motonishi popped the radiator on Wooten's car. I only got to hear it one run and never got to see it but the sound was not pleasant and the description of his right front wheel bearing made it sound worse than the one you decided not to run on in Oscoda Tom.

Like Jen mentioned, Daddio's RL run was REALLY fast. He ran all of Saturday on old tires that he didn't know were corded. This morning the new tires got scrubbed in and will go into storage until Sept. His raw times according to Daddio may "put the fear of God" into Tunnell. On a side note to that one, Tunnell dumped the rear fenders entirely and decided to step up to the 315s and can still spin them all the way through second, no lack of power there. Daddio tripped a 4.010 200' time with a high .500 reaction time in practice starts, no one, not even the shifter carts, came close. He's back to 285-18s front and rear now.
Midnight_Gold 08-08-2005 09:03 AM

Good running phil :) Looks like teh Konis are working. I did notice that chang coned away another 0.6 on his last run. I really think that car could be the car to beat. Thats a 0.6 advantage *per side*. Also, looks like Courtney had a bad weekend.

Congrats Kaysee! Kickass result. BS is sure going to be a hoot at nationals.

Also, I forgot about Nate, 3rd in STS and 4th in the challenge with the new kaa nicely done. Billy was struggling on the left as he has a good right side time, but didn't seem to nail a left.

Arrrrrgh, wish I could have gone.
-Tom

edit: oops wrong login
PhilC 08-08-2005 09:40 AM

Yeah Courtney's weekend stunk. He wasn't happy with the way the car is setup right now and couldn't find a tire combination that worked at all.

Looking forward to the Finale now. Mike comes in with a 1st and 2nd in STX to try to go up against Josh's two 1sts. Mike and Josh are also tied for third in Honda Street Challenge with 75 points each from what Jen tells me. Hollis and McKee are tied for first with 80 points each. So just like usual it comes down to the Finale on both.

Personally I was amazed that Billy was walking Sunday morning after the Saturday night one shot for every cone you hit challenge (That's 8 shots for Billy).
PhilC 08-08-2005 09:51 AM

Chang's car isn't even fully prepped at this point. At the entertainment Saturday night he tried to convince me that there was nothing left in the Civic, it couldn't go any faster. I think a true STX Civic could indeed be the car to beat. And it's .3 per side .6 total on the launch against Mike or .8 total against someone launching hard, I think Chang was about .2 faster than Courtney to 60. Sunday morning he showed up to grid with a car that was visibly lower, he told us 1/2" on the left and over 3/4" on the right, which made the ride heights even side to side. When we asked if he had enough stroke left in the shocks at that height the answer was "I guess we'll see on the first run". Lots of speed left in that car once it's dialed in. I think maybe it was the G-String that made him faster Sunday morning. And yes Tom you should have been there.
jcroy66 08-08-2005 10:11 AM

Yeah, next time I apparently need to eat dinner with Billy and Jason on the other side of Outback - maybe I would have appeased the cone gods if I'd taken my 7 shots (for my 7 Saturday cones) like a "man". But since I hate doing shots alone, I just did the one double-tequila shot with Mike and KC. (Although it was noted that I downed it fastest of us 3 at least. ) So the cone gods frowned upon me and I coned away my fastest right-side run (again!). Then I totally spaced out at the light on my 2nd right-side run. I was concentrating on how I would drive the course and suddenly noticed the light had just gone GREEN! Ended up with 1.1xx reaction time and a 2.0xx 60'. Nice - way to lose 2 places because I was spacing out... Oh, and it's official, I was the slowest person in an STX car this weekend. All of STX beat me and Lorae Myers in Jason's car Saturday afternoon and Sunday beat me too. So really, I should have been 11th of 12 in L2, since Lorae's runs in Jason's car were still on the SM2 index (ouch!!).

The good news? I had a blast. :) I had a blast hanging out with everyone. And unlike Nationals last year, I also had a blast out on course (even if I sucked). And I even made $4 in my garter belt...
angryfist 08-08-2005 10:31 AM

well billy didnt hold up to his end of the deal... i think he only got to 4-5 shots then we got back to the hotel and he passed out... hehehe. sorry we didnt make it to the entertainment. we were all out of money.

only hitting 2 cones on saturday made me the DD...

dont feel too bad jen.. i drove horribly too. i cringe when i see teh results. i even had a 1 sec improvement on my first right side run on sunday but unfortunatly hit a redlight. but even with that i still sucked it up.

btw. i remembered as i was leaving i forgot to pay you back jen.

oh, and congrats to the those that did good, condolences to those that had the redlight or cone god's frowning on them.

bet you didn't know the old man could carry that much sand, did you? bastard backmarker hanging back until everyone forgot about him. even going so far as giving up on runs that he coned so no one would even know what kind of scratch times he could run. seemed like he just didn't want to win it was so deliberate. awesome job none the less. i'm still gonna pwnz0r your raw times at natz! :D
