Toledo Tour part 2

cooleyjb 06-02-2005 08:57 AM

Do they sell the rule book at the events or do I need to pick one up before I go there?
Do they sell the rule book at the events or do I need to pick one up before I go there?
They sell it at the event. It's $15 or $20 (can't remember off hand).
bump, it's two weeks away!! I am getting psyched, now.... to find a hotel tonight.

Justin
to refresh an eariler post: the airport isn't exactly near downtown Toledo but that's all relative in such a small town. there's lots of places fairly close to it but those fill up quick. if you can't find something close here's my suggestions....

In Perrysburg:

Baymont Toledo-Perrysburg
Holiday Inn Express Perrysburg
Holiday Inn - French Quarter
Red Carpet Inn
Days Inn - cheapest, except for maybe the Red Carpet Inn

In Maumee:

Red Roof Inn Maumee/Toledo
Country Inn & Suites Toledo
Comfort Inn West
SUPER 8 MOTEL - MAUMEE/ARROWHEAD/TOLEDO AREA
Motel 6 Toledo

there should be plenty of rooms available.:)
crystalhelix 06-02-2005 02:03 PM

Anyone staying here?

MAUMEE, OH - the RedRoof inn?

i'd like to stay where some Suby people are staying.

Justin
Scooby Freak 06-02-2005 02:07 PM

I think most of the Philly Region crowd is staying at the Extended Stay in Holland.
crystalhelix 06-02-2005 02:13 PM
Phil and I are booked for the Hampton. I REALLY like the Homewood Suites, but it's booked solid for both the Tour and the Pro already. :(
this one?

Hampton Inn Toledo-South/Maumee Available

From 99.00
USD / night
1409 Reynolds Rd
Maumee, Ohio, United States, 43537-1625
1-419-893-1004
8.02 miles from city center

I think you two are the only people I have met.

Justin

I am looking while I am at work, sorry for all the posts everybody.
jcroy66 06-02-2005 02:20 PM

Yep, that one. I believe Steve Garnjobst (former Subie guy) is staying there too. Here's the email I sent to Steve a few weeks ago when he asked me about hotels.
So we're staying at the Hampton Inn in Maumee. We haven't stayed there before, so I can't say what it'll be like. But Hamptons are usually very nice, it has wireless, etc. Rate for 2 people is
$92/night, so that kinda hurts, but oh well. I think the rate might have been somewhat cheaper for only 1 person (which I find pretty annoying actually, why would a 2nd person in the same room cost more??) But it's close to food for dinner, close to the event site, etc.

Other places we have stayed:

Holiday Inn Express in Perrysburg. I thought this place was very nice, plus reasonably priced (~$74). It was just farther away from the site than I felt like staying this trip. However, on the upside, it's less than a mile from Orion's parents' house, so it'll be close to his BBQ party on Saturday (or whenever it is, I don't think he's announced an official date on NASIOC yet). :)
The website says it's 21 miles to the airport, that sounds about right. Part of the problem for us was a "can't get there from here" kind of problem though. It's either take back streets the whole way, take I-75 north to the turnpike and then pay a toll to go 2 exits, or take I-75 south to I-475 north to the backstreets. But it was a nice place, IMO. If the Hampton is too pricey for you, I'd recommend staying at this place. You'll just drive a little farther each morning and evening.

Holiday Inn on Reynolds Road. I don't see it listed on their website anymore, so maybe it changed hands. But the place was a DUMP. And as far as I could tell, so were all the hotels on Reynolds. Reynolds' hotels might be the closest hotels to the event site, but it's not worth it IMO.

Fairfield Inn in Maumee. Stayed here about 4 years ago. It wasn't quite a "dump", but wasn't very nice either. Typical Fairfield Inn, as I recall. Just looked it up and the rate is $74/night. DEFINITELY not worth it, at those rates.

Is there any chance that I'll be able to get in off the waitlist if I were to register for it today?

My weekend just opened up, and I'd love to experience a Nat Tour.
crystalhelix 06-03-2005 10:48 AM

The hampton didn't work out. I will be staying at the DaysInn instead. A fellow SteelCitiesSCCA board member is splitting a room with me.

Orion 06-03-2005 04:21 PM

Holland is the area right off the freeway on Airport Hwy and it's pretty small. All the hotels are close to lots of places to eat and shop. There's also a theater there too.

Maumee is one exit back down the highway and "Toledo" starts on the other side of the freeway.

Sat. night I'll be grilling up some stuff in Perrysburg. I know the Croy's have asked, but I'd like to know a general head count of those interested. I'll be picking stuff up at The Anderson's, a great General Store with an awesome butcher shop, on the way home.

Speak up if you're interested!:)

I'm some place called the Toledo Plaza Hotel & Suites, 9 miles from the track. This is my first national event (I'm in ES, and I honestly don't even remember why I'm registered on this forum) so I hope I didn't pick the wrong place and end up being the only autocrosser there, but I guess at $35/night its not bad.

I don't know if I'll go karting like some people have talked about, all the local ASCC guys will be out to wreck me after the two events at Speeds we had last year. :)

I am interested. Can you PM me with some information. This souds like fun, and I have met the croys. I guess all the people that have been to Toledo before know exactly how to have some during the events. I think I will get into Toldedo Friday around 2 so I can get tech'd Friday night.

same here (if I am allowed to come), what do you need food/beverage wise?

Justin

PS - Looks like Subaru favored weather for this weekend although it is miserable setting up a car in the rain.

Justin

Also, can I start asking some questions?
If I am teching on Friday - I assume I should go to the airport
How strict is the schedule?
Is there any shelter if there is a storm? I figure it's a runway so probably not.
I guess I am looking for a newbie's guide to going to a National Event
KC 06-06-2005 09:48 AM

Yes, you should go to the airport to be teched Friday. The schedule for tech is on the SCCA site for hours... if there's a line of cars, they won't close it on the scheduled time tho and turn people away.

It also helps you so you know where it is if you've never been there. (So when hung over sat morning, you don't drive around 1/2 of the area saying 'you know where the airport is?')

Yep head to the airport, from the east exit the turnpike, turn right, left at the first light, veer left at the split and take the left that is down about .5 miles to get into the event site. Once you've been there once it is pretty easy to find but the first time that area can be pretty confusing.

The airport is an active airport and schedules are pretty strict. If they say event site closes at 8PM then it does. But I think tech closes at 7 so like KC said, if you're in line they won't skip you.

There isn't diddly except flat concrete at the Toledo airport so in a storm expect to get hammered. If you don't have a tow vehicle to store stuff in I suggest picking up a small tent. Works great to keep your stuff from being completly and utterly soaked.
SloRice 06-06-2005 10:31 AM

can I borrow someone's tow vehicle? :p
crystalhelix 06-06-2005 11:00 AM

If I have never raced on concrete should I try to make it out for a couple fun runs? I am trying to determine how early I have to get my lazy butt up.

Thanks for the info Phil!

J
Orion 06-06-2005 11:10 AM

Justin - It's not like any concrete you've been on before! It's more or less like slippery unsealed asphalt. If you can get there for some TnT runs, make sure you're there with plenty of time, like when it starts!!! You have to work an hour of it. Last year there were a ton of people running so it was slow going especially late in the day. Can't say it was worth it for me, but I still plan on making it for it again this year.

Should I start a new Cookout thread?

All you'll really need to bring is yourself and some beer for yourself. I talked with my parents and there's plenty of burgers, chicken, and stuff to grill up. With my brother gone in Iraq it's just the two of them and a bunch of food!
I was thinking of Saturday only because everyone will obviously be in town. Friday is usually pretty crazy with people getting into town and getting ready for the event.
I'm game for some karts too, just wish it was down here at Speed's!!!
SloRice 06-06-2005 11:10 AM

I raced there once last year. IIRC, I ended up setting my suspension to full stiff and raised my tire pressures about 3 or 4 psi over what I normally have them set to on asphalt.

Whereas I normally run the suspension at 3 to 5 back from full stiff on asphalt - Tein Flex Coilovers.

Personally, it's a lot gripper than anything I've ever been on. So it was a treat for me. :D
crystalhelix 06-06-2005 11:21 AM

woot for the cookout  . I may skip the test n tune if it's that hectic. It sounds like local fun-runs which means you get to sit in line for 20 minutes for 1 run and it cost you $2. I don't think it's worth it ti set the car up. I am looking to have a lot of fun and do things that maximize the fun-ness.

I'll be there to watch, unfortunately not racing (i fear national SM with my few mods, plus i've got the naughty ALK still).

What's the deal with parking for this event? Can I get in to where the competitors park for a regular NWOR event or do I have to go somewhere else? I'll have my wagon there (i don't know if anyone remembers it from the NWOR season opener, silver bugeye with black wheels and yellow lights, i ran in SM), so if I have access to the pits you're welcome to stash anything the needs to stay dry in my car.

good to put a name with a face/car. the planes do take up a ton of space, especially since it pushes the track so far in. i'm excited to see the atmosphere of a national event though.

What's the rule on camera's. Locally I am allowed with a spotter and I have taken some nice pictures. What's the story at nationals? Do they already have cameras to take pictures? I plan on taking a lot of pictures of cars while I am in the grid.

Yes, you're allowed to take pictures. Pro companies will sometimes come out too and take pictures you can buy. I don't remember if Toledo did last year or not.

Just a few FYIs to any new folks.

Passengers are not allowed at National events. Usually not at Divisional events either.

For those that run in the afternoon, they will re-open the course for walk-throughs during lunch (which I think is between the 3rd and 4th heats). It can be handy to find a buddy who ran the course in the morning and have them walk with you and point out areas of the course that may have been "gotchas".

Last year I think they had Saturday lunch catered in for the Tour. There are also several fast-food joints near the airport: Subway, McD's, Wendy's. Turn right out of the event site, veer right at the split. At the "T"/traffic light, turn left (this is the road you came in on from the right if you came from the turnpike). The restaurants are about 2 miles down IIRC.

There are nice restaurants near the Maumee hotels. We'll probably head to one of these Friday night; if you want a dinner buddy, the more the merrier. Grab us and ask us where we're going. Saturday night is at Orion's. :)

Gas stations. There are a number of cheap gas stations nearby, but off the top of my head, I don't recall any "good" gas stations. There is a Sunoco about 8 miles away, but it's one of the ones that puts alcohol in their gas. :( So if you might possibly need gas, I suggest getting a gas can and bring 5 gallons with you (or get some at the Sunocos on the Ohio Turnpike). Fuel starving on an autocross course sucks...

There is no shade anywhere at the airport, except the tents they erect. Bring your sunscreen.

If you have a cooler, you might want to fill it with bottles of water/Gatorade/pop, then fill it with ice at the hotel. They provided water last year, but I seem to recall the supply running low by Sunday afternoon.
Orion 06-08-2005 03:36 PM

The Sunoco back down 20A (Illinois Ave in Maumee) has 94. I don't know if that's the one you're referring to, but I had 0 issues with it in my old WRX. I always topped off there when I needed it for Tours & CenDivs.

Looks like Jen, Phil G and I will be one of those pointing out the bad areas since we'll all be running 2nd (that is if I stay in GS).

The last 2 years they've had Sat. lunch. And there's a good supply of water.

Weather does look crappy but we all drive Subies, right???!!!
jcroy66 06-08-2005 03:52 PM

Maybe it was at the Pro that they ran out of water then - I don't remember for sure. :)

And yeah, I think that was the Sunoco I was referring to.

I'll be happy to try and help anyone during the lunchtime course walks, but those familiar with the quality of my driving might choose to stay far away. :) "Uh, and here I went in too hot, got pushed way off line and so this next corner was crappy." "Yeah, but I don't plan on screwing up like that, so...."
crystalhelix 06-08-2005 04:12 PM

How long are the runs at Nationals typically? I am just wondering if everyone fills their gas tanks or trys to run half full to save some weight.
jcroy66 06-08-2005 04:27 PM

We run quarter-tank, MAX. Frequently lower than that, especially if we're not dual-driving in the same class.

I seem to recall runs often in the range of high 50's.
PhilC 06-08-2005 04:29 PM

We try to start with about 1/8th of a tank or less, I haven't had problems with fuel starvation anywhere except the Peru Pro last year where I started my set of four runs after Jen had already done two runs with the low fuel light on.

I'd guess we'll see a mid 50, maybe a low 60 second course for the Tour and remember you only get three shots at it so you won't go through all that much gas.

YMMV though, Jay and Ed have to run about 7/8 of a tank or more or else they fuel starve their car, in the past that has meant topping off the tank after the first 4 runs in their two driver car.
Orion 06-08-2005 04:36 PM

speaking if gas.....
With my old '02 WRX in STX ideal fuel was the light coming on after the first run for a single driver event! Last year I had a full time codriver and we started with the fuel light +4 gals. A couple times we ran low and had to refuel, the Tour being one of those events on Day 2. I should have taken my fuel jug with me Sat. night and brought an extra 2 gals.

With my '05 RS at Toledo earlier this year my lil bro and I ran into fuel starvation with 1/3 tank but I attribute that to the broken endlink on the fornt sway allowing MUCH more bodyroll than usual. The only time I had an issue was one super-tight right hairpin. I have a new 22mm bar and Noltecs up front so running 1/3 tank solo is no problem so far....

Results may vary of course! ;)
How long are the runs at Nationals typically? I am just wondering if everyone fills their gas tanks or trys to run half full to save some weight.
I don't run at Nats, but I've run at Toledo before and if you've got a single driver STi you'll be fine with 1/4 or less. That is unless you've changed something in the fuel system or have waayy more grip than I did.

Good luck guys, and I might stop by to check it all out!

YMMV though, Jay and Ed have to run about 7/8 of a tank or more or else they fuel starve their car, in the past that has meant topping off the tank after the first 4 runs in their two driver car.
3 shots per day?
Are your times added up or is it your best run over the course of two days? Sorry I am a newbie for anything other than 1 day local events.

3 runs each day. For a Tour it's the sum of your best run from Saturday and the best from Sunday so you've got to have good runs both days.

That's pretty cool. Thanks for all the info.

Another n00b question -

Is it a different course both days?

One course on Saturday then on Sunday they usually move a half dozen cones or so and run it in reverse.
