Type RA-R Red Grill Trim, DIY for $5 part 6

RedefinedTR 06-03-2007 10:11 PM

I did the RA-R stripe tonight also. Looks awesome with my blacked out headlights. I did all 3 openings because I think it looks more finished that way, but if I ever change my mind I can peal it off and put it back on when ever I want. Only took me about 45 min start to finish on the tota project. I will post pics later, but I spent like $14 on my car this weekend and changed the looks a ton.
rich728 06-03-2007 10:14 PM

which product did you use? 3m/pin stripe ......
RedefinedTR 06-04-2007 07:19 AM

I used the prostripe
BIGSKYWRX 06-04-2007 10:11 PM
has anyone found an exact color matched vinyl to the STi logo (Cherry Blossom Red)?
ditto
djsniggedy 06-04-2007 11:50 PM

Where the hell do i pick up the pinstriping? Any autoparts store like R&S strauss...pepboys etc? I thought home depot would have it but I wasnt in luck. someone pm me! or post here..thanks.
Mechie3 06-05-2007 09:11 AM

I got mine from advance autoparts.
Qcanfixit 06-05-2007 10:17 AM

I think a sharpie would be very handy for this mod.
RedefinedTR 06-06-2007 07:24 AM

Did mine today with Advance Auto pinstriping.... I don't know about a sharpie though..The whole fun of this, is that's not permanent..

 I didint think anyone would take that seriously

We should petition crayola for a new color "JDM pink".
BIGSKYWRX 06-06-2007 09:45 AM

For thise interested in a "cherry blossum/pink" stripe that would match the pink Impreza badge- looking at this site they sell 150' rolls of the vinyl for ~ $20 http://www.vinylstriping.com/?gclid=CIOMjdDwl4sCFQg6SQodOFDMTw

their color page shows a light magenta that is almost a dead ringer- compared it w/ my badge

http://www.vinylstriping.com/?gclid=CIOMjdDwl4sCFQg6SQodOFDMTw

I don't think it will take 150' to do one grill :)- anyone interested?
Mechie3 06-06-2007 10:13 AM

^^ "blossom" might be a good match too!
BIGSKYWRX 06-06-2007 11:49 AM

I compared both- the light magenta was closer- albeit the name would indicate otherwise :)
wtfmateim65 06-07-2007 01:04 AM

ahaha i just found some pro dimension 37 series vinyl electrical tape (light red) at home depot which is 1/2" thick and decided to slap it on just for the heck of it and to get the hang of it for the real vinyl stripe! its fat as hell and not too sticky so one corner that was stretched to form popped off but i just pushed it back on lol. ghetto? yes tacky? yes temporary? yes good practice? yes
btw i also put on the DIY garage seal front lip which i did a horribly ****ty job with the tape on.
heres pics

I'm on the bandwagon too. I did it yesterday using the Prostripe product from the OP/Autozone. Looks really good IMO. So here is my contribution to the thread:

Not for I. I fudged up the first attempt with a bad method, and it was a major PITA to get off.. it would rip every time id start peeling it off and was hard to fit my fingers in there. I have a GC, so thats prolly why (one piece). I'm takin mine off anyways due to too many different colors on my front end.
s13poop 07-02-2007 03:06 PM

^ sucks

did you try alcohol or goo gone to soften the glue??
bigstrusk 07-02-2007 03:43 PM

Nope, but I will when i take it off soon; thanks for the tip.

This is a pretty cool mod, but it jus didnt work to well for me.

LOL...the phone FTW!!!!!!! that's great....does it change you accent when you answer the phone too?
ScoobaSTieve 07-29-2007 06:40 PM

I'd like to do it, but I can only find the blue pinstriping in 1/8" and that's too small. Every other color in 1/4" EXCEPT blue. :(
edub905 07-30-2007 08:36 AM

came out real clean, nice job
AxlxA 08-01-2007 01:37 PM

Just did it in a haste...... Obviously I screwed it up!!! there are some tiny bubbles left on the vinyl because i wasn't careful enough. Oh well this was my first trial anyways. I'm going to wait a few weeks to see if it starts peeling.. Only did the middle grill for now. will definitely do the side grills after lunch.

BTW the prostripe pinstripe was $6.99 at Checkers(AKA Kragens, CSK auto)

Here goes: I wondered if OP wanted to use some of these higher quality photos for the tutorial:

speaking of this mod, a couple of peeps over at clubrsx.com are using the prostripe to "stripe" the edges of their rims in red, kind of like the rota SDXs.

has anyone done this on a subie? i'd be interested to see how it turned out.

Interesting. I'm gonna go pull one of my black steelies out of storage and try it. I got nothing else to do anyway, and plenty of striping left. :D
boostdog 08-13-2007 02:14 PM

Have any of you had problems with the stripping pulling from the grill at the top right and left corners where the very sharp bends are at? I am talking about the 2 outer pieces of the grill not the middle. I washed mine very well before installing and with the extreme heat we are having it is coming off.

yup. when i still had it on, there were select corners that werent behaving. others were fine. i believe it has to do with how much it was stretched when applied. ie. you can jsut lay it on and press on it to stick it; or you can stretch it out and cover a large area kinda deal. wehn i did the latter around corners, i found it pulled away.
boostdog 08-13-2007 02:34 PM

^^ ya i had to stretch it using a hair dryer to get it to conform to the shape...i guess i'll try it again and if it doesn't stay i'll take it off. I hate to do that though,, it looks good!
AxlxA 08-13-2007 08:38 PM

boostdog, I find myself in the exact same situation. I stretched mine initially to get it to fit nicely around those sharp corners. but now they're peeling off like many has mentioned. I might take that out and just leave the middle grill striped. It looks badass though with all 3 striped. sigh.
boostdog 08-14-2007 08:01 AM

i hear ya...what brand striping did you use? I used the cheap stuff from o'riellys. it looks perfect and other than the peeling at the corners I have had no issues with it. Wondering if a diff brand would stick better. I actually have a friend that I have not talked to in a while that owns a tint/stripe shop. I am going to call him and see what he says, hopefully I can bum some better grade stuff from him that will stick.
Mechie3 08-14-2007 04:27 PM

I didn't stretch mine much and it's been fine ever since I did it. I've even blasted it with the high pressure hose at the carwash several times (sometimes on purpose just to see if it will come off!)
