And back on topic...

While the EVAP system is out for service, I noticed this tie down welded to the framerail. Bastard was on there with 12 spot welds. Took me 4 hours to remove it. The cramped area you have to work in to get at it prevents using the grinder for two-thirds of the spot welds and the spot weld remover can't get even close to a straight shot when you chuck it in a drill. I resorted to drilling at an angle with increasingly larger bits, bending, and prying. Broke one of my 1/8" bits. Frustrating.

All for a pay off of 240 grams (0.529 lbm) removed. I know the picture reads 213 but there were metal shaving everywhere after grinding, sawing, drilling, and bending this off. I'm calling it 240; problem? :diaf:
Current Mass of my Subaru

Spot Weld Removal Tool
Just go slow or you burn up the teeth. Use cutting fluid and you'll get more life out of the the tool. See smoke? Slow down. Let the tool cool off.
Lay into it with the bit spinning at max speed and you'll be lucky to get 20 uses out of it.

Nice.
I would love to run the Cobb one with my exedy and the DSS shaft. I think I may jump off the fence and try one of those LWCP's and see what the diff is. My car probably needs to have the plugs and coil packs taken care of anyway. Lol.
68, have you gone as far as to start cutting "speed holes" in anything yet? Lol. I'm trying to think of other brackets that can be lightened or replaced. I'm also thinking of picking up a carbon or FG trunk and using those neodymium magnets instead of the trunk springs...

I have a Cobb lwcp and a CF driveshaft. Having an ACT Streetlight flywheel placed now as part of my engine build. Hoping for no codes :p.
Also, have a Spec C aluminum trunklid and am using the neodynium magnets. Works fine.

How much weight did you shed with the magnets/trunk? I know it works just fine, I'm just curious on the savings. It looks like Primitive has one more fiberglass trunk in stock, and I figured I would see if I can pick it up over the next few weeks to start shedding weight.
| A-man07 | 02-11-2011 06:08 AM |
I have an STi with the big wing so the combined weight of the OEM trunk/wing is 41 lbs (24 for the trunk and 17 for the wing). The Spec-C trunk was 13 lbs and I took off a couple of pounds in underbracing, badges and the lock mechanism, so I was able to shed 30 lbs + 1 lbs each for the trunk springs.

...now if only I could figure out a quick way to shave weight like that off the front end to help distribute it more evenly. Lol.

This is definitely an issue. I've left some obvious stuff on the back half of the car because I've already removed so much off the rear and don't want to futz with the weight distribution anymore.
Off the front I've removed the front bumper beam, the U-subframe and gone to a 9 lb battery (Braille). I've removed every conceivable bracket in the engine bay except the ABS one and I doubt I'll remove that one. I have lightweight rotors and coilovers as well as lighter wheels. I've done most of the brackets and plates under the dash and of course sound deadener. I've removed the windshield wipers and motor (8 lbs) but it's pretty much a sunny weather car anyway. I'm doing some further lightening of some engine components being swapped as part of my build like the turbine housing and a very lightweight UEL header. I plan to move the battery either to the trunk or in a plastic box under the passenger seat. I still have the stock seats in with plans to eventually go to lighter seats. Thinking of other custom things for the front end of the car as well. I'll post them here when I get around to doing all of it.

Well, I figure I'll relocate the batt to the trunk (possibly the window/intercooler spray as well) to help clean up and balance my weight a little more...besides, I will be running a medium-weight (around 22lbs) battery as it will still be powering some goodies (daily driven, just want to lighten it up a bit). Also, I'm running a FMIC, so my front bumper area is anything BUT normal. I still need to do the front subframe, and with 68Cadillac's inspiration, I will probably be doing some cutting of those front "fangs". I'm already running the front with no fender liners, so those are gone.
What exactly is the "u-subframe" to which you refer? Also, would it be possible to do some cutting out of the ABS bracket just to lighten it?

Actually, I don't think your model had the U-subframe yet. Sure you could cut up the ABS bracket some.
You mentioned the washer fluid reservoir, I took that out as well as the hood insulation and the TMIC splitter as it didn't work with my Spearco anyway. This is my journal on IW as I'm forgetting other things anyway: http://www.iwsti.com/forums/gd-members-journals/155041-mans-07-sti-dd-street-weapon-car-efi-logics.html

Sweet, A-man. Thanks for the link. I still haven't really started doing a TON of weight reduction (I have about 80lbs. off myself that I need to reduce as well :p), but I'm hoping that between your journal, Anorexic's journal, and the bracket modification that 68'lac is doing on here, I will get into this to reduce a LOT of stuff. :D

My battery was in the trunk and I moved it back to the front, the amount of cabling you need to do it properly is very heavy.

Wow. I last posted in this thread about 8 years.
At age 22, I was interested in extracting every ounce of "performance" from my sad little 1.8L impreza. Annoying and buzzy was ok, as long as it was lighter and "faster".
At age 30, I'm more interested in making my commute more tolerable, so I added a ton of sound deadening material to my '96 Outback to make road noise less noticeable and make the stereo sound better.
I guess I'm old now...

Bracket that holds the wiring harness for the engine. It's right behind the battery. Like a bridge tower I guess.

Not entirely. I'm at 26 now, and for a short time, I was thinking of selling my car and picking up an S4 because they are still fast, but are more heavy and comfortable.
Instead, now I'm thinking of keeping this car since it's almost paid off, and picking up a leggy or outback for a DD. I hate how noisy my car is on the freeway as a DD. Not so fun. :P But, i figure that I may soon turn this car into a street/track/rX car, so I'm looking on how to improve it without paying too much. :D

ok thanks I've been thinking of removing the ac for awhile

Actually, it's warmer more humid weather that causes trouble defogging the glass without an A/C.
| gtasti | 02-21-2011 12:36 PM |
yea i didnt think of that

Over the past few weeks I got a bit more done.

took this out from underneath the center console. The rear off the console can now flop around a bit if you push on it or lift up on the back of it. It doesn't move during the daily thrash. Definally can't put my 20 lb lead brick in there anymore. Lost 226 grams. Yes I tared out the 1.5g ziptie.

Horns. Maybe not the wisest decision. 392 grams.

Tempted to remove the front grill but the Sube just looks silly without it. Kept it. It's 597 grams just so you know.

Because of some unforeseen complications with a drive shaft install I had the differential mount subframe out.

Clearanced a bit for the drive shaft. Also cut two large "speed" holes, and removed some welded on weight from the differential mount subframe. 733 grams removed.

After paint.

My eye caught the differential mount subframe braces sitting on the floor.

Hole sawed 96 grams lighter.

Woot! I love seeing all the random stuff you seem to find to cut and drill through to reduce weight.

Congratulations on having removed over 300 lbs! That is no small accomplishment.

Nice!
I can't wait till I reach over 360 lbm off the car. Before headers, up-pipe, and carbon hood the car was at about 3200 lbm, wet (full tank).

My lightweight alternator crapped out on me, it gets too hot trying to keep up with the power demands. Had to go back to the stocker. :(

I had to do the same thing to my rear crossmember for the DSS driveshaft, just clearanced it with a torch with the member still on the car. Got my car weighed last Saturday at IAG perf. 2865 the way it sits with spare tire, AC and stock bumper beams and quarter tank of gas. Im deleting the AC real soon, also looking into a titanium catback

Glad to see my efforts inspire. :)
Meeting my goal of 300lb removed, is bittersweet. My efforts paid off, but my goal is past. The journey is where I find enjoyment.
Next goal: 316.5lbm (143.6kg) mass removed. Why so such an odd number? It's 10% of the OEM curb weight right off the ship, 3165lbm.

Hard for the GR to lose weight, so heavy stock. I was hoping I'd be under 3100 by now but with deployments and all that other busy work its slowing me down.
I don't think I'll get as low as you, but I'd like to shoot for under 3000 lbm this year.
CF drive shaft, CF door cards, and CF center console is all in my possession.... just need to install it all. Then, CF roof and hatch is in the near future, along with some lightweight floating brake rotors and brake booster delete (STI brake servo kit). Maybe lexan glass on the hatch, not sure yet. All expensive but once the CF is painted, it should last as long as I take care of it. Hoping that will take around 100 lbm off then do some chassis management ;)
Also going to do an air pump delete.

Sorry, stock weight of the car. But other weights would be neat to know. I want to say the 04 STIs were under 3200 stock, but idk.

I am I really want that tomei Ti exhaust but can't afford it atm unless my exhaust sell and the aps intercooler i got :(
| Str8Gone | 03-03-2011 05:24 PM |
^Yea im waiting on that litespec exhaust, about half the price of tomei and it looks better imo
| u2_m4r1n3 | 03-03-2011 05:28 PM |
I'd like to do Ti too... but damn, it's expensive. I'd want a custom axle back though, so it's the same as I have now... but that means more money!
For now I'll pull weight from everywhere else, I'd rather lower the CG and take more weight off the front.

but if you grab the tomei one you can also remove the left exhaust hanger lol a little more weight saving there as well :D
yea i saw litespec is releasing one soon I'll have to take a look at that one too

I figure my car is already light as hell, anymore weightloss is just a bonus. The extra 600$ for the tomei is def not worth it. The tomei weighs 11.5 and the litespec is 15, I dont think 3.5 lbs is worth 600$ haha
