you should have saved all your scrap metal, and smelted it into a mini subaru version of your wagon LOL

You're not far off. I have about 85% of the metal I cut off stored in my shed, labeled, and bagged. I think I've a sickness.

Removed 1.646 kg. The Bell Works Hub and OMP wheel has to be one of the easiest installs I've done in recent memory. I think I was done in 30 minutes. Probably took just as long to take the photos, write this post, add, and store the old parts. Also the OMP wheel is one high quality unit. The leather is perfect and stretched just right around the whole wheel. The stitching and glue: impeccable. I'm also glad I went with the 350mm large diameter and smooth leather. Honestly I wish they made a 375mm or 400mm wheel. The 350mm feels small compared to the OEM.
What a thread.. Inspired, Ive read the whole thing now (took 1 month, gave me 2 pages of work to do  ).
Anyways, there is so much fuzz on these bumper beams, and for the record these appear to be USDM only. European cars dont have them as far as I can tell, checked 2 now (GD).
Anyone with the windscreen washer fluid in the trunk? How do you route it? I suppose the intercooler spray line would work, but I dont have that....
Im quite worried about wheight distribution. These things are 60/40 stock, and 3/4 of the wheight removed in this thread appear to go from the rear... Good excuse for keeping that big rear wing though. Ill also go for the battery in the trunk, I feel those extra oz of wire is worth the slightly better distribution.
Trying to take more off the front and as high up is a good plan . A lot of people here have made those comments. Sport Compact Car did a test with a stock 350Z where they removed 600LBS and then retested it maybe someone can find the link ? They windshield washer along with the battery and your other resevoirs for fluid might be able to be relocated to the trunk i would be careful of air in powersteering and radiator resevoirs.
doing that is more like reorginizing the weight. Some might say that the battery should be inside the passenger area on the floor , but i the having it on the trunk would have a greater effect on the front to rear weight ratio which will also help handling.

Just a few notes from my past experience: These cars are really not heavy. When your car weighs about 3800 without you in it... thats heavy. I just got out of an 06 GTO and stepped back into a subaru and this car is waaaaay more light and agile. My car was a mild bolt on car that did 380/385 and that thing hauled ass even weighing over 400lbs with me in it! I see a lot of people are pulling their interior, taking off door pieces, changing the steering wheel and for what? 30lbs? It doesnt make that much of a difference and for the way the car is slowly getting destroyed, its not really worth it.
You can do a few things to these cars that are key and can save a good amount of weight off the drivetrain - carbon fiber driveshaft, light flywheel, pulley, rotors, and wheels/tires. These should be the main focus.

Subarus don't like lighter fly wheels nor pulleys
And most of the stuff caddy took of his car is nothing you even see
If you think saving a few hundred lbs does nothing ur crazy

Let's face it...you can strip all the creature comforts from your car and get your perfect balance and all that...and in the end a stock GTR will spank you with minimal effort.

Let's see 2009 GTR out the door set me back $93k while 2011 WRX was $27k(that's in US $s) - so not entirely sure where $100k difference came from.

Just looked up 2009 because alot of the ones in my area that i see are 2009 , people most likely raced to buy them when they first came out. the civility of our cars would deminish at those levels. BTW if any one does race a GTR I would be curious to see the results, gotta post it! The GTR is a good bench mark ( ruler) to measure performance. If you can beat a GTR most likly you would employ every weight savings trick and speed trick out there!

No dig on the GTR - it is a great car, but the 911 is way nicer and refined. I would never pay all that money for a Nissan. For the price of the GTR I can get a used 993 turbo and an new STI - perfect summer/winter ride combo.

back to weight reduction:
interesting to note that the OEM steering wheel/airbag only weighs 2.7kg. would have thought it would be more than that.

No need to remove the dash.
Remove the glove box.
Unbolt the three bolts holding the bag cradle to the dash bar.
Undo the wiring. Hardest wires to undo in the whole car.
Pull/Push the whole thing out through the top of the dash. Cover and all.
Separate cover from bag and reinstall in dash.

This is no longer true. Koyo has a new version of their GD chassis radiator. It is thinner and lighter. It weighs 7lbs 13.25 oz with no fluid, fans, or cap, which is a couple of ounces lighter than the stock unit. The picture you quoted is the new design. The old design was about twice as dense and used a less efficient fin design/density.

I've read through a good part of this thread before, and it seems that you're one of the main contributors, and I think that's very impressive
could you give a quick rundown of what "creature comforts" are lost? from what I can tell from the pictures that aren't related to the rear being gutted, you've lost ac, cruise, and airbags, anything else? it seems like with just a little bit of care taken that losing 150-200lbs is quite attainable with a full interior and ac (what I want)

I still have the full AC system installed and working. I even used it while waiting in grid just before my run group received the green flag. Gets a little hot waiting there. I normally run a full interior excluding the "o **** handles" and rear seat head rests. I reinstalled the passenger seat, rear seats, and cargo area false floor this evening.
Thanks for the correction on the Koyo Radiator.

ever get the How to for the EVAP delete? im gonna tinker around with mine this weekend and drop some more weight. Just to chime in I got the exedy flywheel, Perrin LWCP and DSS Al Driveshaft and no issues. Removed most of the basic stuff, but gonna dig in and find some, maybe have Mr. Dremel gimme a hand.
| b3delta | 10-24-2012 05:54 PM |
btw just removing the front subframe, full SS headers/exhaust, battery relocation, and removing heatshields, was enough to cause a significant ride height change in the front, so if you're worried bout the look and ride height here is your warning about the car diet.
Also, with the whole Ti debate. Titanium while very light and strong, is still heavier then Al. IDK if they make Al exhaust, or if it would hold up to the heat, but thatd be the lightest feaseable material.
Another idea for fighting heat and keeping weight down, anyone considered an aerogel heat shield? I know the stuff can be machined and holds shape while weighing next to nothing (the stuff is like 99% air or something) yet it has ridiculously low thermal conductivity. http://www.buyaerogel.com/ this has it in tiles, wraps, and loose granules. Seems to be a hell of a way to combat heat while not adding wieght. Fighting heat is just as important as dropping weight IMHO.

Might as well post what I've got going on, all AC and cruise hardware removed, wiper fluid res removed and intake silencer, among various other things I've taken out along the way. Opened up my hood scoop so it's functional and removed all hood liner. My motives are having a lighter engine bay obviously (save gas!), something to keep me busy (I'm an aspiring mechanic so I love working on my car), and everything I've taken out I don't use. So it's nice to have all of that out of the way for when I need to make more drastic repairs.

I also have the legacy front bumper with the large fog light inserts, no fog lights though so my intake is run though the right insert straight up to the stock box. Interior is gutted out as well, wagon coupe!

on the 03 WRX, you pull off the one piece grill and the two small pieces that cover the headlight mounts. there are 6 or seven popits that connect to the top of the crash beam, holding the bumper cover on, with the stock USDM beam removed, there is no way to attach the bumper cover except for the popits in the wheel well.
Looking down on the beam as if it is attached to the car you can see the holes
I relocated the reservoir to the rear, its pretty straight forward.
Coilovers will be the money maker in weight distribution. You can adjust ride height to shift weight, I highly recommend it if you're serious.
On the M3 I went from a 50/50 stock distribution sitting at 3420 lbs to 2980 and a 49/51 split. Before I added Coilovers I was around a 56/44 split. Those Coilovers did good!

I relocated the reservoir to the rear, its pretty straight forward.
Coilovers will be the money maker in weight distribution. You can adjust ride height to shift weight, I highly recommend it if you're serious.
