Rally GB Predictions?
Do you think Solberg can pull it off?

51% of WRC.com's viewers think so. :D
Epyon 10-30-2003 07:17 AM

As a Subaru fan, I hope that Solberg wins. But I've always been a huge fan of Sainz and wouldn't have any qualms if he won.
shrieden 10-30-2003 11:38 AM

I would be happy with any of the 4 in contention, even if Richard hasn't won any rallies, his consistancy has proved his biggest trait.
Subie Gal 10-30-2003 11:58 AM

best championship race evarrr!

who knows who'll win?

richard is a definate for GB....
he absolutely flies at his home event...

but petter no doubt will be nippin at his heels...

Loeb... nope. i dont think he'll win...
GB is too nasty... rocks, ruts, mud, rain....
not his specialty just yet...

Sainz... hmmmm
never count el matador out!!!

gonna be a great event!! :D

Jamie
WagonMonster 10-30-2003 12:06 PM

It's either gonna be Sainz or Solberg, but I'm not counting El Whine-o (Burns) out!

At least it Won't be freaking Gronholm again!
johnfelstead 10-30-2003 06:10 PM

Petter Solberg should win the title if the car doesnt let him down. The Pirelli's are the best wet weather gravel tyre by some margin and the torque delivery and traction of the Impreza works better in these conditions than the other cars.

Saying that, i think you cant count out Marko Martin for the rally win and the title will be decided by who is 2nd.

Should be very interesting.
rupertberr 10-30-2003 10:59 PM

Re: Rally GB Predictions?

"Petter Solberg should win the title if the car doesn't let him down."

I agree. Some one else will win the Rally but who ever wins the war will deserve it.
MattDell 10-31-2003 12:06 AM

I'd be happy if Petter or Richard won. :)

SCRAPPYDO 10-31-2003 09:34 AM

I truely hope that Petter finishes high enough to win the Championship. He is a class act in the WRC and it would do the sport lots of good to have him finish first. He is likeable and truely a peoples driver. I dont think he will win, but will keep himself ahead of who he must for the big prize. He has really grown in this last season, and he deserves a chance to highlight his talent. He finished second last year, and I think everything his set for him to finish on top.

The Impreza is fantastic in GB and has brought RB his last championship. Subaru usually does well here, and I think Petter will do just fine!

Go baby go!
jaybird 10-31-2003 01:10 PM

Nice new Icons! I like Solberg for the win. I just hope he doesn't push too hard. Burns is hard to count out @ home, but I'm not so confident with the Pug. Martin is also a good choice and would certainly make things interesting for the championship.
Rattler 11-02-2003 01:16 PM

If Solberg doesn't do it I hope Sainz does.

oh boy... thats TERRIBLE for Richard :(
he always does sooooo well in GB. hope he gets better.

now, without question, Petter will win :D
Dr. WOT 11-04-2003 08:33 AM

I'm going out on a limb and picking Carlos. I don't think he has the overall pace to keep up with Leob, Martin and Solberg, but he has had so many cruel disappointments in the past couple seasons that I think luck is going to be on his side this time. Luck is such a huge part of this sport.

It would be fun to see Tommi or Colin end on a high note, but I doubt that will happen.

Either way this event is going to be a real "cracker" and there will be no undeserving winners. I can't wait!!!!!!!!

GO PETTER!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

RAlly GB prognostications
Poor RB (well, given his salary that's not entirely true) is getting slagged all over the place. Cut the guy a break! The travel schedule these WRC crews have to deal with would make anyone faint while driving a stupid rental car, too! Shoot, we're lucky Markko Martin was there to grab the wheel when Burns collapsed on the highway. Markko has been in enough wrecks for one season.

Let Burnsie rest in peace, get well soon, and start testing his new Impreza WRC 05. How's about we stop slagging RB and start rooting for the contenders at Rally GB:

Sainz the lionhearted: bravest of the brave, hardest of the hard-asses. Truly deserves win due to cruel disappointments there in past--like blown Toyota engine on last stage of event when leading both Rally GB and driver's points.

Petter the Hollywood hunk and Great Hope Of Ye Olde Long-Suffering Scooby Faithful. If he wins, nobody loses (except El Matador).

McRae the default local favorite and heroic lame duck. If he wins, all WRC teams look like dopes for not signing him next year. If he loses, we keep buying his video games. Either way, McRae comes out ahead.

Loeb the cold-blooded competitor. Not my fave, too calculating and never makes eye contact. He's a tarmac specialist who prolly can't hack it on wet slippy wiggly UK forest roads anyway.

Hope for a safe event, no horrific wrecks or injuries, may the best crew win.

Cheers,

Dave G

I hope Peter keep it on the roadd:devil:
gtguy 11-05-2003 04:01 PM

I think that Solberg's new found maturity will stand him in good stead. He should place better than Sainz. Loeb, when you pack on the pressure, seems to be mistake-prone. Frankly, I don't think that any of the three championship contenders are going to win the rally. I like McRae, going out with a bang.

But among the Championship contenders, I think the order will be:

Solberg: maturity, speed and a bulletproof car that is a torque monster.
Sainz: maturity and pace, but not the same outright speed that Solberg has.
Loeb: still figuring this off-road thing out, but watch out when he does.

Of course, I could be all wrong!

Kevin
AndyRoo 11-05-2003 04:02 PM

A battle between McRae and Makinen would be pretty cool.

But i think its between Sainz and Solberg, and i would be satisfied either way, more so if Petter won though.
rallyshark 11-05-2003 04:25 PM

With Burns out of the rally, i'd say the solberg and sainz are my top 2 picks for the win. Wanting petter to win though, GO SUBARU!

I wish Colin Mcrae could pull out a good race, then maybe citroen won't drop him from their team as they are talking about now...Makinen also deserves a win as this is his last WRC race before his retirement from rally.

Subie Gal 11-05-2003 04:27 PM

tommi has not ever fared well at rally GB...

i'm gonna have to pick Petter for the win :)

good luck Petter!!!!
Capt Crunch 11-05-2003 09:02 PM

If Petter won that would be sweeeeet...

I never realized he or Subaru was ever in contention...
Apisatrox 11-06-2003 10:33 AM

Petter won the shakedown - by a sizable margin (at least for shakedowns).

He's on his way!
rupertberr 11-06-2003 10:42 AM

Time to get off the fence...
Finishing order in Wales:
1. Gronholm
2. Martin
3. Solberg
4. Sainz
5. Makkinen
6. Loeb
7. McCrae
8. Loix

Which means Solberg and Sainz tie for World Championship.
Solberg breaks tie breaker with more wins.
Mister Toro 11-06-2003 11:07 AM

This will be a cracker for sure. I see Sebastian setting the pace early on because he has a great chance to 'prove' himself, but with any luck will he crash out or get lost and run out of gas. If he does finish the race, then Petter will be hot on his heels until day three when Solberg will really start to tear things up. But if they both have problems, even relatively small ones, Senor Sainz will be there to take the Championship.

But I have a question: If Petter or Seb finish one place above Carlos, then they will tie him in points but lead Carlos becuase they have more rally wins. But if Petter were to end, say third and Seb fourth, they would tie in points and both have 3 rally wins. How is it then decided which one leads? Do you look at second place finishes, then third?

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"Carlos Sainz went off the road and is out of the Rally of Great Britain. The Spaniard and his co-driver are fine but are obviously eliminated from the championship battle.

That leaves Sebastien Loeb and Petter Solberg alone in a duel for the 2003 Drivers' Championship title. So far the two men are leading the rally, Loeb in front of Solberg.

Sebastien was the fastest in SS3, 2"5 seconds in front of the Norwegian in second position. The overall gap between Loeb who is the rally leader and Solberg who is in second place increases to 3"8 seconds.

Markko Martin was able to continue despite his earlier engine problems. The Estonian takes third place in SS3, in front of Tommi Makinen (4th), Colin McRae (5th), Harri Rovanpera (6th) and Francois Duval (7th).

Marcus Gronholm also went off the road in this stage. The Finn was able to continue but his Peugeot 206 has substantial damage at the front. Marcus lost more than 13 minutes in the incident.

Mikko Hirvonen also got involved in an accident. The Ford driver broke the left rear wheel off his Focus and had to retire. "

Damn, and I wanted to see him win.

Alex

PS - This makes it even more tragic:
Carlos Sainz is out of the rally, leaving Loeb and Solberg to battle for the title: "When we left the service park, the in-car TV camera box caught fire, causing a lot of smoke. We thought the problem was fixed when we reached the start of today's first stage (SS 2). But the engine management box had been damaged and we couldn't start the stage normally. We were given a new starting time and completed the stage. Then, in SS 3, I had lost my concentration completely. I didn't here the note Marc Marti was giving me because I was thinking of the problem and the possible penalty as a result. I came into the corner in 6th gear instead of 3rd and went off the road. I don't blame anybody except myself for this unfortunate retirement."
ShockWave 11-07-2003 09:27 AM

Petter 1st, Tommi 3rd!

GO SUBIES! GO SUBIES! :disco:

This race produces more excitement. Say what you will about the rules and how the WRC is run, they put on a show that runs all the way down to the wire.
rupertberr 11-07-2003 09:44 AM

Good thing Petter is pacing himself!
X1_SRT 11-07-2003 10:11 AM

wow, what a day so far! gronholm, martin, hirvonen, and sainz all out! talk about nuts. loeb has won a couple, but the ones he didn't win he was back a few places. the stages that solberg didn't win, he was only in 2nd or 3rd. i think petters strategy this weekend is is consistancy. and hes doing a damn fine job so far! Tommi in 3rd is awesome. how great would be for him to finish on the podium of his last WRC race! Go Subaru!

...tyre exploded, causing major damage...
According to Autosport:

Solberg needed to vent some frustration after SS6...
Petter Solberg continues to lead Wales Rally GB after SS6, although the Norwegian suffered a major drama in the stage when his tyre exploded, causing major damage to his Subaru Impreza.

The problem occurred near the end of the stage, ensuring that Solberg lost only 1.6s of his lead to Sebastien Loeb. However, the Impreza's suffered heavy bodywork damage, leaving his mechanics with a large amount of repair work to do at service.

"Four kilometres from the end of the stage the front right just exploded," said an unhappy Solberg. "F****** hell I can't believe it."

Loeb set the fastest time on the stage, although his run wasn't without drama, as he lost time after a suspected puncture midway through the stage.

"We had a puncture on the front right, or something's gone wrong with the car," said Loeb. "In all the left-hand corners, I just had no grip on the front-end of the car. I don't know what, but something is wrong."

SS6 was run over the Rheola stage for the second time today, and it seems likely that the condition of the road surface could have contributed to the tyre troubles experiences by Solberg and Loeb.

Colin McRae was third quickest through the stage after making some positive set-up changes to his Xsara WRC, 2.3s down on team-mate Loeb, and took 10.2s out of Tommi Makinen's lead in the fight for third overall. The Finn still holds the position, although the Scot is just 10.8s down the road.

The battle for fifth and sixth position is an all Peugeot affair between the works 206 WRC of Harri Rovanpera and the privateer Bozian machine of Gilles Panizzi. The asphalt ace impressed with his pace through the muddy forests of Wales for much of the day, although he was 7.8s slower than Rovanpera on SS6, allowing the Finn to leap-frog into fifth overall.

Francois Duval, the lone works Ford representative remaining in the rally, runs a lonely seventh, comfortably ahead of Peugeot privateer Roman Kresta. However, the Cezch driver is facing a challenge from Freddy Loix, who closed in after a strong sixth fastest time on SS6.

The final stage of the day is another blast around Cardiff's superspecial at 19.38 GMT tonight, and is unlikely to shake up the order much. We'll have all the latest news here on autosport.com

Too many USA wrc fans.. and not enough USA wrc support for us (comparatively) few :(

its too bad wrc.com doesn't have a us mirror. they need more bandwidth! or more server.

EDIT: w00t.. seems to work better though Mozilla (i'm at work :( was useing IE before. )
