After installing my Bride seats into my 07 STI and doing the 3.3ohm resistor mod, the airbag light is still on. I never unplugged the battery during the seats swap. Do you think I need to unplug the battery to reset the ECU?
| TRooper | 11-10-2008 12:16 PM |
If all you did was install a 3.3 resistor then you will still have to swap over the occupant detection system and posiiton sensor.

Trooper, can you writeup the seat position sensor? or at least give me a good pic of the underside of the driver's seat?
Bumping this as I just did my Evo Recaros in the STI. These instructions worked very well. Thank you! The one issue I had was the passenger bladder itself in the Evo seat. I had to turn it sideways to get it under the cushion. But it still works regardless.
Also I didnt have any 3 or 3.3ohm resisters so I soldered 3 11.1ohm resisters in parallel and got he same results.
3 - 1.1ohm resistors in parallel would make the resistance 1.1 ohms, 3 - 1.1 ohms in series would make it a 3.3ohm circuit.

so would this work if you wanted to put 02wrx seats into an 06wrx

yes it would. This will work when you put any non stock 06/07 seat into an 06/07 Impreza.

I was wondering if someone could help me out with the modules in question on the passenger seat.
I got a set of leather stock seats for my legacy to replace my cloth seats.
The airbag light was faulty in the "new" seats to start off with. I was thinking that I need to replace the entire bladder system, but after reading this I am wondering if I can/should try replacing only the black box module that looks like there is a plug.
Is there any advantage/disadvantage of trying this? Are each modules "married" to the respective bladders?
Just seeing if I could make it an easier job than replacing the entire bladder unit and plugs.
right now I get the ABS light on in the dash, and the occupancy detection doesn't work (ie it says nobody is sitting in the passenger seat).
Oh, another question that someone mentioned.... do I have to reset/disconnect the battery before any of this will work?
I did the driver's seat without resetting the battery so I figured I didn't have to bother with this one.
If it would help I'll reset the car now and see if it helps.. but I just don't want to waste my time in case it doesn't help :)
Thanks!

Sorry for the necro here, but I'm unclear on the side air-bag functionality.
My insurance company requires functional side airbags in cars equipped. (Discount, even...) I'd also like to keep the functionality intact for safety reasons as well. As a result, my options are limited to factory offerings. I've searched quite a bit in here, and don't see a clear answer on the older seats. (I know the post-'06 seats are direct swaps with no problems.)
I was going to swap in '02 WRX seats into my '06 TR, but I'm unclear on whether the side bags are still active in such a swap? The passenger sensor swap is no problem, but not having the active side airbag is a problem.

02+ seats have the side airbags, just swap in the passenger detection system and it will all work. Also, don't forget the driver's side Seat rail position sensor. You can swap a 06 rail and keep it functional, or use the stock rail and just plug it in and zip tie it out of the way.

As anyone who has ever written a tutorial, can attest to, you will continually get PM's years after writing it. I have no problems answering them, and enjoy helping fellow Subaru enthusiasts with useful information that may get them out of a bind. Here is a recent PM exchange that covers a few common questions that I regularly receive via PM.
On to the Copy/Paste
TRooper,
I don't know if you remember me but I spoke with you about your RA interior a while back. I was finally able to source some front seats and door cards and found your 06-07 passenger detection system swap thread amongst others in my research. My questions to you are whether or not it is necessary to swap the detection system? I deleted my clock for my defi gauges so i don't have the clock.air bag sensor light anymore. I've never swapped seats so this will be a little new to me. I'm not big on wiring either so that doesn't exactly help .
Will the passenger airbag still be functional if I do not do the detection system swap? If so, and I do not care about swapping over the little side airbags in the front seats, will everything just be a clean plug and play swap?
You seem to know what you're doing when it comes to the interior swap, none of the other walk throughs and how-to's on here and on iwsti seem to be very extensive when it comes to the wiring.
My apologies for this message being a bit on the long side. I just want to get more feedback on the wiring part. If all I need to do is swap the seats with all else being plug and play then I'm safe, but if I need to do a little more rewiring, wire tucking/moving, and such then I'll need a little help from those like yourself who know what you're doing.

You will need to address everything in the airbag system in order for it to remain functional. You can either bypass the sensor or swap it over, but you just CAN"T leave it unplugged. If one part of the system is not hooked up or bypassed properly, the airbag system will not work at all. If you have an "AIRBAG" light on in the main cluster while driving, the system is detecting an error, and will not work.
Passenger side
The passenger detection system is easy to bypass, just follow my tutorial. Since you are using JDM seats, you will not have side airbags, use the 3.3 ohm resistors to bypass both the driver's and passenger's seats.
Driverside
There is a seat belt tension detector that must be swapped over, unbolt the 07 STi seat belt receiver and bolt on to the JDM seat. Since you are replacing your stock seats with another Subaru made seat, you can just swap bases with your stock 07 STi seat rail. This will accomplish two things:
-Allow you to keep your seat rail position sensor(allows the airbag to know how fast to deploy)
-Give your JDM driver's seat height adjustability.
Important: You can not just leave wires or harnesses unclipped, the system will not work at all if this is the case.
Did you keep the clock/airbag terminal hooked up, and just hide it under the dash? Or did you just cut the wires? I am also running a Dfi/STi Genome gauge cluster in the center pod, my clock/airbag status display is still connected, just hidden under the dash.
I've got a question that is rather off-topic to this but there seems to be a lot of guys in here with knowledge about how the system works. If I drive around with a separate buckle in my seat belt plug in (?) so I don't have to wear my seat belt but it won't ding at me, does it trick the airbag system at all? Does the seat belt locking having anything to do with the system? Sorry I'm not sure if that made too much sense, feel free to jump my case if it didn't haha.

Just to straighten it out 100%
This is my understanding please correct me if im wrong.
1. I must transfer the driver seat position sensor from my 06 sti seat to my 02 wrx leather seat because the 02 does not have it.
2. I must transfer the bladder / passenger detection system to my 02 wrx seat since it does not have that.
3. I must put a 3 ohm resistor in the passenger side to prevent the airbag light.

damm... if only i had saw this post before i traded my seats...
I have an 08 sti and traded for some recaro srd's from a legacy owner. I was told that i only needed the resistors to get my airbags working and i ended up not getting my driver's side seat position sensor and the passenger's occupation detection module...
anyway... i'm trying to get my parts back from my stock seats from the guy, but he's telling me he's using it and he has modified them. I'm sure he can use his parts from his stock legacy seats and give me the parts i need from my stock seats.
in case he does not cooperate, is there a way to fool the occupant detection module to keep the airbags on at all times?
and... is there a way to fool the driver's seat position sensor without it??
dang it!! seats r great, but def not worth losing ALL of my airbags!!
someone help me out please!!!!

Try to locate some seats with the proper parts and use the parts from those.
I'm concerned that people would mod/swap a major part and system such as the seat & airbag and not put any thought into what you are removing. Did you just see all the wires and harnesses left over and think leaving them disconnected wouldn't matter?

I used this thread to help me swap my 06 TR seats for 02 WRX seats. Great writeup guys, I appreciate all of the info I got. I tried to swap out the rails on the driver's seat to keep the seat position sensor operational but it wasn't a direct swap so I had to keep the 02 rail on 02 seat. I guess I will just plug in the sensor and zip tie it out of the way. Doing that will just tell the airbag to deploy as if the seat was far away from the steering wheel correct?
| TRooper | 09-29-2009 12:46 PM |
Yeah, you will be fine. unless you are really short and have the seat adjusted really close to the wheel, the sensor wouldn't be activated anyways.

To avoid having to have a "separate buckle" clipped in if you don't want to wear your seat belt, do this: With the car off and the doors closed, sit in the driver's seat. Put the key in the ignition and turn it to "ON." Clip and unclip the seat belt buckle 20 times in 30 seconds, then remove the key from the ignition. That will shut off the seat belt chime after the initial chime when you turn the key to "ON." If it doesn't work, try it again - took me several tries to get it to work on both my Subies.

Trooper, is there any info available about the actual mounting of the driver's seat position sensor? Specifically, I'm finally getting around to swapping in bugeye seats into my 06, and I'd like to retain the functionality of this sensor, as my wife occasionally drives my car.
-Is the sensor hard-mounted in a way that it will not re-mount to an 02-03 WRX seat?
-I looked into swapping seat bases/rails between OEM seats, and only found the JDM STI to USDM STI info. Is it feasible to swap out the cushions from the '02/03 seats (and obviously the passenger detection sensor) into the '06 bases, thereby retaining complete OEM functionality?
Thanks very much in advance-

Here is a picture of how they mount. The sensor mounted to the slider, circled in yellow, is a magnet. The "trigger", circled in red, is a steel plate that is mounted to the base. When the seat is far enough forward, the trigger passes through between the magnets in the sensor and it lets the airbag system know that the seat is in a closer position to the steering wheel. I just swapped a 06 USDM base to my JDM seat. I do not know if the 06/07 base will fit a bugeye seat. I know the height adjustment parts and plastic trim are different.

Hey everyone i'm just trying to clarify this before i go through with it. I am getting a set of 04/05 wrx seats and before i swap them into my 06 TR i just want to clarify what needs to be done to make the system work.
1.) Swap the bladder and module from passenger seat into the other passenger seat
2.) Swap the position sensor for driver seat
3.) plug in micelanious wires and i'm good to go?
My question is can my 06 driver seat slider sensor be swapped to the 04/05 wrx seat and are the side airbags a from the 04 a direct plug in to my car? any help to clarify would be great.

When I swapped 02 seats into my 06, i tried to swap the base out on drivers side and the 06 base didn't bolt up to the 02 seat. I left the elevation changer on the seats, and tried to swap the slider part of the base, if that makes sense. Maybe there is a more hard core way to take the base apart so you could swap them?

I'm pretty sure all of your answers are in this thread, but I know you want to make sure before you jump in. Your driver side rail sensor has to be swapped over if you want your airbags to work. Most people just tape the sensor up and forget about it. If you need it to work (measure how close your seat is to the steering wheel) you either have to put your 06 base on the 04/05 seats, or fab/weld the metal piece that slides into the sensor on your 04/05 seat. The side airbags on the 04/05 seats will plug right into your car. I think someone posted a link to a page that details how to unplug all of the airbag connectors. They took some fiddling when I did it.

The side airbags on the 04/05 seats will plug right into your car. I think someone posted a link to a page that details how to unplug all of the airbag connectors. They took some fiddling when I did it.

I think this is the big question that everyone has. You're saying that the sliders *don't* interchange, based on your experience?
Does anyone know if the *bases* will swap? (Similar to the JDM/USDM Sti seat swap detailed in another thread?)

06 slider did not fit on 02 base. I don't know if you could do it on 04/05, but I know you can't on 02/03.

Those would work, but they are a bit overkill. You don't need a 10-watt resistor; a 1/8-watt or 1/4-watt resistor will do. Try something like these: http://shop.vetcosurplus.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=8050
Buy 5 or so, then you'll have some extras if you or a friend ever need them.

Nhluhr installed the bladder into a Corbeau CR-1 so we know it can be installed into an aftermarket seat. Have you tried looking at the Bride to see if the lower cushion is accessible? Is it possible for you to post some pics so we can see what the lower cushion looks like?

Has anyone tried swaping GC RS seats into an 06 or 07 STi? I have some seats and the rails do not line up well and I am pondering if swapping the rails is possible.

I tried to swap the rails on 02-03 seats and didn't find a direct way.

Bumping this because I'm just wondering if this is possible with the Recaro Speed seats? I'm looking at getting a pair.
I suppose as long as the bottom is accessible, this is possible? I'll have to ask the seller.
Thanks in advance for anyone with prior knowledge.

In post#4, nhluhr, posted some details from an install into a Corbeau seat. So we know it can be done in an aftermarket (non-Subaru) seat. As long as the bottom cushion is accessible and there is a firm place for the bladder to rest, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.

Thanks for the reassurance. I'm just waiting for a reply from the seller regarding the accessibility of the bottom cushion.
I'll be sure to post if, and when, it works on the Recaros.
Thanks again, TRooper!

I got the GC RS seats to work in the STi with the airbag pad and fully functional. The trick to get the seats into the STi is to adjust the rails individually as they require a slight offset to get them to fit. The air bag pad slid right in the front of the seat. These are a cheap, light alternative to expensive race seats and they have better bolstering than the STi seats.
The weight sensor pad installed from the front of the seat:

So here are the plugs I have, 2007 STi, stock seat swap to Sparco's.
Driver's Side: The two semi-connected go to the seatbelt. Which of the other two plugs gets the resistor?

Passenger Side: The plug on the LEFT is from the seatbelt, but does not connect to either one of the other plugs which are from the car. Issue? Which of the other two gets the resistor? (I assume the one on the far RIGHT.)

I was going to swap seats into my 07 wrx but when I got my passenger side seat out there were the 3 connectors as show but I had a 4th one. So I thought screw it but I now I really would like to get it done. I'm trying to remember but I believe it was a blue connector instead of neon yellow or whatever that yellow color connector would be. Would anyone know, is that for the heated seat? Or is that a part of the airbag system as well?
Thanks,
Thanks,

I took that picture on the first page so that you can see where it sits. Also, the wire seems to run into the seat back.

I just took my Evo Recaros apart as I sold them. I took some pictures of what the passenger detection looked installed on them so I can reference them when when I get the new seas. Thought these might be useful.
