I would guess he was struggling from the damp/slick conditions in the morning. He could barely make it through the course in Fontana when it was wet.

It is NOT an FS course. As a career FS driver, owner of one of the cars, and having driven all three of the cars that are competing, not a single one of them could do "well" on that course, on that asphalt.
Hell, it's not a BMW course either. Stompy scares the crap out of me -- half the reason I like the challenge of driving it -- but I think it or an Evo would be the car to have in BSP this weekend.

My understand was that his car broke this morning. It wasn't wet at all when he ran his morning runs; it was dry by 4th run group. I'm not sure if he fixed it, or found another ride though.

Well, from the description of the course, I think Mike was pretty much screwed anyway. Mike's description on SCCAForums:
150ft start into 4 offsets that I brake to get into and out of, but not in between. The "back stretch" is about 100ft of straight followed by two oppossing 90 degree turns separated by 100ft of straight. After the 2nd 90 degree turn there is 100ft of straight that turns into a big sweeper getting into a 4 cone slalom that is fast but requires breaking into a 120 degree turn followed by 80ft of straight the the finish. That is the general idea; lots of power sections.
Jonathan won AS by 2.2s after picking up a bunch more time today. Other AS folks picked up some time, but obviously not as much as Jonathan. For those playing at home, that's a ProSolo championship for an AS STi running on stock wheels, 3mm spacers, alignment, cat-back, and front swaybar. Oh, and 275 A6's. No other mods. Car doesn't even have 2k miles on it.

Wow. Just wow. Speculation: is this an indication of driving talent, previously unknown stock-class potential of the (05) STi, weather/time of year, or is it potential classing-turned-on-its-head with the new pavement?

Jonathan and Max's ('06 STI) times are interesting to compare. 70.461 vs. Max Hayter's STU time of 71.677. 275 A6's vs. 245/40/17 shaved Yoks. Max using 10 inch wheels up front and I believe 9 inch wheels in back, plus the usual STU mods.

OEM shocks. Strano bar. I'll leave the diff and alignment settings as an exercise for the reader. ;)
Oh, Jonathan is top qualifier for the Challenge. He had a 2.2s margin and the next closest margin was 1.2s. Margins that big are pretty rare for the Finale, particularly in well subscribed classes.
Contrary to popular belief up to now, I'm pretty sure the STi is not only competitive in AS at Pros, but it should be at Nationals, too. Not saying he'll win, but he'll definitely be competitive.

Looks like maybe Josh's car broke on him again. If you see this Josh let us know what parts you need, our car is just sitting in the garage and we could maybe arrange to send parts west with people who are leaving in the next day or two, probably the fastest way you'll get parts to Topeka. Congrats to Billy on taking the STX season championship.

Nah, actually STU had great course conditions for the whole event. There was a very difinitive line and either you drove that line or you were screwed. Literally, if you were 6 inches off you line you were in the marbles. The lot has decent grip (about even or slightly better than Ripken), but it creates a lot of residue (sand?) when run on.
Max drove very well; me not so much. After Friday I was convinced it was all course but after today I realized I just wasn't driving very well. Not to say the course was good for me, just saying that it wasn't the source for all of the time gap; I was giving up half a second to 60ft and probably 8 or 9/10s to the first breaking point and that is a lot to make up. I don't think anyone could have designed a course better suited for an STi (and I assume WRXs are similarly geared) if they had tried. In speaking with Max and Jonathan, they never ran out of 2nd gear and also were always in boost. While most cars were bogging coming out of the 90s, I watched Max try to deal with wheelspeen at all 4 wheels. I did manage to get within a 10th of him on the right today in raw time, but he whooped me on the left. Looking at the course maps for Nats, it doesn't appear they courses will be as STi friendly, but I could be wrong. I also broke my shifter linkage today but managed to nurse it through my last two runs. Its all fixed now so I'm ready for Tuesday. Can't wait to meet the rest of STU.
Anyhow, congrats to Max and James Balducci, both of whom drove great, as well as Dave Heinrich for finally whipping my ass in that Evo which is too pretty. Oh and another congrats to Max who won the STU season points battle.

The ESP Camaro's said the course was slippery. :-)
In the Super Challenge Max went out in the first round ... stopped for a down cone, then realized he had gotten lost ... on his 14th run! :-) He said he was totally "knackered" from not getting any sleep. It will be interesting to see how much energy he has to party tonight! :-)
I believe Billy coned out in the first round. Barco made it to the final 8 before coning and losing to Andy Hollis.

Actually, the STi and WRX are very different gearing wise. And when I talked with Max, he mentioned being up against the limiter in 2nd gear 3 times just before braking zones. Which might sound perfect....except for the fact stock turbo STis fall flat on their face at around 5800-6000rpm, and by 6500 are making less than they do at 5000rpm. So running from 6,000-7,200rpm isn't really optimal.
I think you're right though about the Nats course. At most tours, the STi is always between 2nd and 3rd gear.
Good luck....but I'm still cheering for Max ;)

What Mike was trying to explain was not time spent at peak rpms, but how much the STI stayed in it's boost range throughout the course and especially corner exit. Nothing taken away from Max as he drove outstanding, but the course speed/design favored the STI's gearing vs. M3/EVO. Max will be one to admit he had 4-wheel spin on some corner exit's. Certainly an indication that the boost was coming on at the right moment.
Congrats again to Max for bringing home the $.

Well Its official I will not be attending. We did a 15 hour rebuild with a newer block as we found the original one was warped. So we fire it up at 1 am and the same problem. So either the heads are warped (we used the originals as my other heads were nowhere near ready for use) we checked them with a straight edge or the cometic hg are flawed. I want to thank Craig(Wombat), the man is good. We took our time and followed the Serv. Man. and made sure everything was done right. Thanks to Cindi for the great dinner and putting up with me and my car for the past few weeks. Thanks to my teammate Bryan (Hollywood) for turning wrenches and putting his wheel studs on the back burner. If anyone would care for a co driver I would love to get my first Nationals under my belt. If not when is the latest to get a refund for the entrance fee?
Thanks

Congrats to Max in winning STU at the ProSolo Finale. He did exactly what one should do in any sport - improve over time. I could not get any better than my 2nd runs on both sides in the 1st session on Friday morning. Frustrating for me, but the 2 day event kept everyone on their toes since everyone had a shot at the win by Saturday. Dave and his way too pretty (and very nicely prepped) Evo advanced to 2nd while I slid to 3rd. I call this the 1->3 'unhappy' hour :-)

Hey Mako,
Rick here. It was hard to compare times. There was the SCCA T and T, and the KC warm-up.
In the T&T there was an optional slalom to the full ProSolo straight. In STU there were probably 8ish Evo drivers, 10 STi drivers, 1-2 in Sipe's rx8 and maybe 2 in M3s.
Please correct me if anyone has more info. I heard I may have had one of the quicker times with a 35.0 with slalom, local white KC Evo Dieman may have about the same w/slalom, Paul had a 35.2 straight, and pleiades had a 35.0 using the straight and a 35.2 with slalom, with awesome power slides to the finish! - I want that STi drive train:D Quite a few 35.5x times. On the other hand it doesn't bod well for me, since I had waaay more runs to learn the course from the Pro.
On the KC warm-up side, Silencer and Branden were quick with 31.x times.
O'blenes was smoking in the T&T with 34.7 in Jeff's STX car.

Even if the course wasn't a fairly true T&T course where elements are optional why would you think that times at the warm up meant anything what-so-ever? The fast guys may or may not be running every element full speed, most likely not, and certainly aren't running at 10/10s because they don't want to break their cars. A fairly big part of the old warm-up was f'ing with your opponents' heads and I can't see that having changed now.
<--not good enough to play that game but been around long enough to understand it and recognize when it's being played.

The fast guys may or may not be running every element full speed, most likely not, and certainly aren't running at 10/10s because they don't want to break their cars. A fairly big part of the old warm-up was f'ing with your opponents' heads and I can't see that having changed now.
So how is the SCCA dealing with STU in ProSolo vs Solo ... where it's not yet a recognized class. In ProSolo ... it's being considered a National class, or not?
Pro Solo is a different animal. There isn't any jacket for any class, they are all class champion trophies and more importantly contingency. In that respect STU is specifically elligible for Yokohama, Honda (I can't think of a Honda product that could win in STU but they'd be elligible for contingency if they did), Kumho, Subaru, MazdaSpeed(same situation as Honda), Nissan(also same situation), BMW and Hawk contingency as well as Honda Street Challenge so they are no different from any other class, and weren't last year either. If driving a Subaru, using Yokohama tires the STU class champion took home the same $2000 cash that the STX champion did (assuming they won the finale to win the season championship) not counting any other contingency they were elligible for or any Honda Street money they took home during the challenge.

As far as times: I had a 34.8 going straight and Paul (Atomicracer) had a 34.8 (maybe a touch faster than mine) going straight. Most times we saw for stu on the right floated between 35.0 and 36.0.
We were certainly pushing the car pretty hard, as I wanted to see what the surface was like, and I need as much tire scrubbing as possible.

Corey and I matched times on the right with 35.608's not going straight, but taking the kink at the start. Saw a couple quicker STS times but not a lot. Crazy how we got the exact same time to the thousandth.
We'll see how the real thing goes later this week!
Was good to run with rubber down as that is how Th/F will be for us! Plenty of grip IMHO. You just have to be tight and tidy.
BTW... thanks for the honk and waive KC on your way into the track yesterday! :p

So I just got an IM
"Barco "won" the warmup hungover/still drunk. He's one of your kind"
You my boy Blue!
-Tom
who notes that autoxing hungover is the equivelent of "if you can dodge a wrench you can dodge a ball"

FYI, at the town hall meeting tonight the SEB confirmed that STU will have National class status in 2007 as a result of the obvious demand for the class as shown by subscription numbers at various events this year including Nationals.
Edit: And as Mike King rightly pointed out, thanks to Keiko Seibt who is the Godfather of STU.

If the STI is hitting 3rd, it is more of an Evo course. However, with all the transitions and sloloms, the East course is definitely M3 "friendly" in STU.
Mike Neary will have his revenge.
