Congrats to Jason Burns for winning FS!!! Looks like another WDCR guy, Brian Garfield, finished just outside the trophies in F125. He ran the third fastest time on day 2, but just couldn't come back from the huge deficit he had on the leaders after day 1.

Congrats to Justin Rothermel for finishing in the trophies in BSP in his '04 STi!!! A WDCR guy, Lee Piccione, finished 5th in the same class.

Congrats to Sam Strano for winning his third ESP title.

STU results are up for the West course. Burkhart won, followed by Fair, Irvine and Neary...

In STXL, Fitzpatrick won, followed by Olson and Ness.

Looks like old man KC decided he was "too good" and tried to give the class a 2 second cushion by coning all 3 runs. 9th and a trophy in BS while giving up 2 secs. Not bad! :)

No. No "T" next to the name == no trophy.

jcroy66 09-27-2006 03:20 PM

Wow, huge change in BSPL results today. Val was leading after yesterday, but today is in 2nd, behind Patty Tunnell by almost 4 SECONDS! Holy cow. And no cones. Someone who is there - was Patty just totally that dominating today? Did Val spin all 3 runs? It seems unlikely, since the others in 3+ would have had to all do pretty poorly too in order for Val to stay in 2nd. So I'm assuming Patty was just really that dominating today. Wasn't today the West course for BSP/BSPL? Which presumably would be more favor able for the Evo vs the M3 than the East course (which I think would be more M3-oriented)?

You Did Great MAX,
Chiketkd 09-27-2006 04:22 PM

I spoke with Justin (alltracin) who competed in D-Stock. He said he felt good and his car felt good, but he just couldn't catch the leaders today and his best run was 2.5 seconds behind the winner's best today. He moved down a few spots to finish 28th out of 39 (Alan Pozner gained a few today and finished 27th).

All in all, great job Justin for your first trip to Topeka - especially considering you were on stock struts!!!
jcroy66 09-27-2006 04:26 PM

Unofficial results (via memory I think) from Jason for STX:
Steve O'Blenes
Jeff Barco
Chris Fenter
Brian Fitzparick
Billy Brooks
Greg Olsen
Courtney Cormier

Edit: web posted results show Barco in 1st, O'Blenes in 2nd. Jason indicated there was some confusion over a cone on Barco's fastest run that was not showing in the provisional results. I wasn't sure if it had originally shown up and then it was taken away or vice versa. It sounded like that situation might have still been getting straightened out.

STX, I love it. New surface, some new cars and some new drivers in the class and it's STILL 5 different cars in the top 8. WRX, E30, E36, Mini and Civic. With a non-WRX taking fast time for day 2 for the second year in a row.

How long do you think it will be before we see a thread about it being a one car class on SCCAForums like last year?

Congrats to all who trophied and those who got to try for that trophy. Really wish I could have been there to take one of those trophy spots away  .

Way to go Chris with the 3rd in STX, although I know Chris may not be completely satisfied with 3rd. :)

Congrats to Bart Borowski for taking DS, I've been racing with Bart since I started a few years ago. He was racing on street tires year before last. Wish I could been there to compete against him.

Also congrats to Jeff Cashmore/Steve Wynveen for taking 1-2 in AS. Denise as well for taking ASL.

Last but not least it was good to see Neal Tovsen in the trophies. It seemed like everything seemed to come together with the car/driver in the later part of the year.

That was definitely some good driving by Jeff this evening. Wish Jonathan had finished a bit higher than 4th, but that's still the highest finish ever by an STI/EVO in A-stock IIRC... ;)

Jeff mentioned this about the course this afternoon over on the SCCA Forums:
FYI, they blew the course clean during the course walk before 3rd heat so they had rubber down and no sand to avoid.

Seems like the afternoon competitors had a better course to work with. Probably the reason why the winning time in DS was almost on par with STU! :alien:

Hey all,

Peaty's link has several pics of Branden's STU car and I though some of y'all might know what was up with it.

There is 1 pic of it sitting still at the line, and you can clearly see those are STi OEM BBS wheels on the car.

His car is registered as an '04 STi, so did Branden...

A) Win on 17x7.5 OEM '04 wheels with 225 Yokes

B) Win on the 17x7.5 OEM '04 wheels with 245 Yokes crammed onto them

C) Have the hub bearings upgraded to '05 ones (legality?) and use the '05/'06 17x8 OEM wheels, on which 245 Yokes make more sense...

???

I'm not meaning to take anything away or muddy up Branden's win. I'm just curious about the winning setup.

(and to think, I was told that my 8.5 wheels weren't wide enough for STU and that 9's were going to be the ticket...)

Thanks,
Mike
AndrewSS 09-27-2006 09:48 PM

^ Actually, I was thinking the exact same thing... congrats to burkhart for apparently great driving! I saw his camera in on his harness bar, I want some incar video ;)

*EDIT*

^ I think its obvious those are the 17x7.5 wheels, notice how the 04 wheel's center around the lug nuts is more flush, whereas the 05 17x8 wheel's lug nuts are more deep into the body of the wheel... hope that makes sense...
Splash 09-27-2006 10:12 PM

^^ I think the same thing, mostly because (C) sounds too outlandish and the lug nuts do look closer, just like on mine.

The rest of the pics kinda make it look like the tires aren't really squeezed on there, which makes me think they're 225's...

Since Neovas run wide anyway, I'd think a 245 would look really pinched on a 7.5" wide wheel. I could be wrong, hence the original post... <grin>

Either way, it does prove once again that the driving is more important than having the perfect setup.

Mike
ExitVisa 09-27-2006 10:37 PM

It's great to see Branden win STU again, although now that he has two wins at Nationals I'm not sure his head will fit in my car if I can talk him into riding with me at our next event. :p

What's funny is that I see only one cone recorded for all his runs, 'cause at KC events when the course workers see his car in grid they go put their track shoes on.

Dan
hoping to see some of y'all at HPT tomorrow
Anybody whats going on with the ASP/ASPL protest? I hope Junior doesn't get bumped....
From what Mike and Di told me, the protest was mainly about tire availability. Evidently, Scotty and LiNay are running 345s... which isn't a problem if they were 19" tires. But, they are 18s... and 345s in an 18" diameter are not available to the "general public" (ie., non-Kumho-contract-drivers). That was my understanding as to the basis of the protest.

Well, this was my first trip out here, and what an eye-opening experience.

Seriously.

I gained 5 spots today, finishing 39th in STU- and felt good with the car. We are well unerprepped (coilovers, front bar, unshaven 'kooks - that's it) and under-experienced.

It was fun and I feel like I gave it all the skill that I have right now.

Our beer pyramid was 10 levels hight at the banquent....1 level ahead of the Atlanta tables (thanks for contributing your empty cup, KC)!!! Never knew I could drink that much bud light.

Wish I could stay to watch the rest of the ETR guys in STS and ES.
Splash 09-27-2006 11:56 PM

Wow, and here I though squeezing 245's onto 7 or 7.5 wheels was the exclusive province of Stock classes...

Hats of to him... He made it work.
