Very nice photos, as usual.... but none of me from the ProSolo, and only one of me on the East course (but 3-4 of my codriver). :( Oh well. It was a sucky week for me anyway, no need to commemorate it anyway.

I would have been FS 34 if I'd been in my own car this year. I was FS 172 (red Camaro with silver wheels) for the Nationals and for the ProSolo Finale, I was driving a purple M3 (L2 92).
Thanks for looking!

They're actually o.k. I saw BSP/ESP cars and knew they ran first...but it's BSPL/ESPL so they belong there I'm pretty sure.

Welp, I'm home and it was great meeting many of you 1st timers. I don't think that many have said this yet, but all of the fears about the site itself, and the sizes of the courses, the surface itself... all that never really materialized. The event was run with just a few hitches, I enjoyed everything about the event with nary a complaint.... (Just that I hope I don't work FM and DM ever again.)
As far as my perfomance... all I can say is that I drove the best I have ever driven in that car. I didn't get the west course figured totally out.. just that I knew there was more time out there, and the east course, I left time out there and overdrove on my last run after I knew I had hit that cone... 3 cones in three runs pretty much kills any chance of a podium finish.
Congrats to all that came out, showed what they had, and performed to their best. :)

One of the main things I didnt like about the setup of the event was where they put vendor row and the food concessions.
I thought it was quite a dangerous decision to put the concessions in an area that required you to cross two lanes of race car traffic.
I think they should put the concessions and vendor row in the area between the tech shed and the fence that lines the courses.
Thats a high traffic area for spectators, etc, but no car traffic....
Just my opinion of course...........

That's why I felt it was worth driving down the street to get food. The onsite vendors at Forbes didn't gouge. Mr. Goodcents was much more friendly to the wallet too. :)

I guess I don't feel quite as miserable knowing I wasn't the only hack to cone all 3 runs on the east course. Only getting 1 clean run on the west didn't help matters either but this is quickly becoming tradition for me to totally tank at least one day.
I know I caught myself stepping while cars were tooling up to the start gates.... All in all not too shabby for the first (nats) go at this site. Food prices were a little steep, but I really liked having the buzz-thru folks right there with (good) hot coffee!
I think alot of folks who either didn't show or were convinced the event was gonna go into mayhem will have little to complain about other than grip. How many mod guys were scrambling for DOT-R tires?
Hey Rupert...I hope that wasn't you I almost tankslapped friday H4 over on the westside. If so....sorry about that! (and you shoulda snapped a pic anyway)

Yea, that was me. No worries, I've had worse. Did promise my kids I would come back in one piece so no shots of the "moment" as I took evasive action. Had plenty of other spin shots from a safe distance.
The track food was awful but I think the prices were dictated in some part by HPT. Vender fees at Forbes were around $100, HPT was charging venders $1,500 and up. HPT is charging vendors even more for the RunOffs.:(

Now that I know what you look like, I'll make sure to wave next year when I'll no doubt do the same thing! If you'd gotten me while crossed up, I woulda bought all the pics. Instead I passed.....I knew I was 18ft off the cone as shown in the pics I was looking at from your table. :( (sigh) I just couldn't bring myself to buy it for a keepsake.
I have no doubt that HPT had alot to do with the prices the vendors were charging. Maybe next year SCCA be able to negotiate the whole deal a little better.
Thanks for getting the shots you did.....I can't even fathom the effort it must take to get the proofs back and organized in the timeframe of this years banquets......

Hey, welcome to the club. As I recall, Mike Shields and I were members of the "cone away an entire day of runs" in 2005. Now we have KC, Jay, and Ed all joining us. Well, Mike came back from that disappointment and took the championship this year (yay Mike!!!). So maybe we'll all kick some butt in 2007! :)

My first run (Tues/Heat4/west) ended up being my fastest even though some moron called a cone on me. Turns out I was clean. Of course I find this out after my last two runs in which I attempted to best my initial run and make it clean one. After day one first through tenth place were separated by .9 of a second!!!!!
Day two I was simply trying to make to a trophy spot and I had it if it weren't for the blazing runs put in by the M3's. They were 2 seconds faster than my time!!!!! Simply amazing.
Still i managed a top ten, so I'm happy. Next year will be a trophy if not a top 5!!!!!
Thanks to my family, SPT, Nasioc, Pastelito racing, Apex Automotive for all of your help and support!!!!!!!

Well my goal was to do better than last year. In 05, I had a stellar performance of 31st, and conning 5/6 runs. I easily met my goal this year. No cones and ended up 22nd. While not as good as I had hoped for. Still not bad.
I really had a ton of fun this year. And tried not to let the racing stress me out. Last year I totally psyched myself out. And this year I have no excuses but that I drove poorly.
I never felt real comforable in the mini. So I'm going to give the RS another shot next season.
Great meeting new faces and as always seeing the old ones!

No problem. Which one did you have and what did you think? The Imperial IPA still seems a bit young and I don't think it turned out as well this time around as it did last time. The Vanilla Porter turned out better IMO. Not sure if anyone else got any or not. We told Mike S. that he should share at least some of it and that Jason needed one bottle of each so I have no idea who actually got to drink it.
Happy that at least one person took us up on our offer of a place to crash on the way out and we could send the beer along even if we couldn't go this year. Everyone remember that for next year, we live within a mile of the intersection of I-71 and I-80 (an hour north of Mid-Ohio) and we have beer as well as a bed to sleep in.
Started my new job today, should have gone to Nationals and put off the interviewing for a couple of weeks but didn't realize that the job market was this good when I got fired.

That's for sure, last time I was unemployed three years ago it took me nearly 3 full months to find a new position, without a severance package and unemployment this time around that would have seriously cut into our savings if we had gone to Nationals and it had taken that long. It sucked not to be there for sure but I've learned a good life lesson. Never ever be honest and let your boss know you're thinking about looking for a new position when you've got 8 days of vacation he won't have to pay you for coming up in less than three weeks. He'll likely justify your interest in a new position by making that your full-time pursuit for a while.

Bummer Josh,
I guess that means we won't see dueling east-west ESP WRXs even if Jason or Greg decide to make the jump next year like they've both talked about. I was kind of looking forward to seeing what you could do in ESP with a WRX. Sorry to hear about your luck this year. Out of morbid curiosity was the tranny you blew at the Pro Finale a rebuild, a used one or a new crate one? I know I pointed you at that used one in Chicago and I hope I didn't give you a bum steer.

It was a used one, but out of Colorado. DynoComp said that the first tranny might have just been the shift fork because there was no metal in the fluid at all. The second one did exactly the same thing as the first. Shift it into first gear and let out the clutch and you would think it was in neutral.
ESP could definitely had been a good time I think. Just too many things weighing against. All the winnings going to tranny replacements, and the fears that A) it might not be competitive and B) it might be too competitive and get moved to BSP or whatever everyone wants to see happen.....

I think my car and the spares that I have, would be a real good start for an ESP car though, should someone wish to take the leap....
KC got one of each (I think), I got one of each, Jason got 3 and someone somewhere grabbed another one or two. I just wish the labels had survived the cooler. Water + paper labels != pretty pictures
Thanks again for that bed. Now if only I hadn't decided to stay up til 3AM talking to Jen I might not have been so late picking up Nate (solo-x) the next night in KCI. Oh well it was worth it in the end.
Started my new job today, should have gone to Nationals and put off the interviewing for a couple of weeks but didn't realize that the job market was this good when I got fired.
Sweet. Let's all hope this one's better than the last and keeps you in car parts and beer money!

I wonder if we got some cellophane or something to cover the labels with, if it would help them survive a dip in a beer cooler...

I had one of each and you're right... the Ale was a bit young (sharp?). The Porter was good tho. :D I 1/2 expected to see 'the' Porter's pic on the label.
Josh, sorry to hear you're giving up the ghost. What's next? :)

(Thinking of WRX for ESP also)

Good news, Phil. Congrats. Wished you and Jen could've been there this year, but there always next year.:D
I don't know what I'm gonna do with my car. If I get really bored this winter, I'm ESP bound. Only to end up in an AWD only SM class.
Greg ( who got none of the aforementioned beer:( )

Hopefully win this roadracing deal in a Formula Dodge car. I go to the final event in Daytona next month to determine whether I get picked to race in the Skip Barber Regional race series next year under full sponsorship.

Yea, you do have a few more goodies. Mine is also "Priced to sell" too. With a KBB of around 12.5K for the stock car, your basically get everything else for 3K. The New Neovas are good for practically a 3rd of that themselves.....

yeah your's is a great deal for someone to snatch up a nationally competitive car. i would be looking for quite a bit more since mine KBB's at 15.5 plus the crapload of parts i have.
good luck on the sale and the race

Jeez, is everyone getting out of STX? Major bummer, as my car will be up for sale in the next couple days too. (Anyone want something cooler/cheaper than a WRX for STX, PM me :p )
This year was an absolute blast to run with all you Subaru guys in STX. My most fun Nationals yet, and it really was a pleasure competing against you guys this year. Diverse classes are fun - Subaru's aren't the only cars that can win.
Btw, the coolest story of STX I heard was Courtney.. not sure who else heard this one. They heard something rattling around in the back of the Mini during Tuesday runs. Then on Courtney's last run, the car shut off in the middle of the slalom - he had to throw the clutch in, turn the key off and back on to restart it, and keep going.. all while slaloming. And it was still his fastest run at 55.2! I shudder to think what that run would have been.. mad BMX skillzzz pay off :D
-Greg
May also be in ESP next year, but not in a WRX..

Yeah that was the battery, hence the stall. Richard and I talked about it after the runs. That would suck at any event, let alone Nats.

It was created by BFGoodrich through Skip Barber Schools. There was a sign up deal on the BFGoodrich website for it. All of the major BFG vendors (e.i. Discount tire) were alloted a certain amount of spots I think, and then the rest were drawn from the signed up people. While I was the first person chosen from the Road America school, I imagine the 16 that go to Daytona will start with a clean slate in the Instructors eyes. So I just have to drive technically sound and quick, and should give myself a good shot at next year.

Not a bad idea...that would secure a win for a Civic ;)
Not that the WRX's have to leave the class, though.....
FWIW...Mike King would almost have won STX this year had he run the civic in that class instead.... With more than one test day in the car, he'd taken it for sure
Mike = 106.549
Steve = 106.519
just food for thought........

OK, Scott, do I need to remind you that you can basically never compare times for T/W classes vs Th/F? Heck, comparing times for Heat 1 vs Heat 3 is downright sketchy. (Which is just one of many reasons I switched to STX open this year. I wanted to be able to compare my times straight-up, without wondering how the different conditions affected the diffs in times.)
That said.
Tell Mike I said: "Bring it, Superman. :D You beat me in my own car often enough, I'd be happy to have you try in a different car. :)"

More food for thought... STX ran on different days than STS... surface condition was different, temps were different... times are not compatible.
That said, I beleive Mike is staying in STS next year... and it's going to be a fun battle. :D
