57, rain and a tornado watch. Plus paddock sounds like a fiasco as well. I guess there are some things I don't miss about not going. Boy I wish I was there though, our original plans called for us to be pulling into HPT about 2 hours ago.

Grap! I don't have a way to get plywood to Topeka for my grass paddock spot.
makofoto 09-21-2006 07:44 PM

I think Max and Jeff are saving a spot for you and Mihai ... presumably on solid ground where the transporter landed.
alltracin 09-21-2006 07:46 PM

What did I do? Karma got my ass :( I got a flat tire the night before I'm leaving for my "stop-over" city.

Ouch. Sorry to hear Justin.
Pacobeagle 09-21-2006 10:01 PM

We have to paddock in the grass!!!! Okay, going to get something tomorrow for that. Unless, somehow, I got a spot saved.

Anyhow, see you all on Saturday night. I'll definetly be at Sunday's test-n-tune.

Ok, Finale practice starts were canned because the tree flew over... the cones were skidding all over the course from the wind... all collecting in the one corner of the lot. So no tree practice, and it was COLD, raining and WINDY all day. Hope tomorrow goes better.

Looks like there's going to be some issues regarding saving spaces.

A co-driven car went out and they tried reserving two spaces per the 'rules' that say "each competitor can save one spot".

That is no longer the case. Phil O confronted them, asking them what they were doing (one of them a veteran, one of them a 1st time competitor to nationals.. and the 1st timer got most of Phils wrath.) "Since there's only one CAR, they can only reserve ONE SPOT".

From the mailing list...
He yells at me to pick up the stuff we put down, we get one extra space. I said, we're two competitors and we're reserving two extra spaces. He said one, I said, I have the paperwork right here, it says two. He gets very emotional and raises his voice "I wrote those, you get one extra! Do you want to get no extra?" I said something like, "I'm not trying to be confrontational with you. The rules _you_wrote_, right here, say, we could reserve spaces. People are arriving, they have expectations." He concedes, Tammy re-wrote them. He rants on and one, "...we have 1,000 people coming, there's not all going to fit, blah blah blah we only have to give you 13 feet by 30 feet, we're not being a pain about making everyone move their empty trailers." Then he gets emotional again: "I see one vehicle, [therefore] one extra space." He turns about to go (not the first time he tried that on me, but XXXXXX and I weren't finished trying to be logical with a ball of stressed out emotion). Nobody said we saw three vehicles, that would have been antagonistic :-) XXXXXX asked about the 9-car tractor-trailer coming, he says, I've got them covered. We try to ask how 9-cars is special and 2-cars is not given the same courtesty, but he talks over us. He talks about how everyone should just have one space (ok, we're beyong reasoning now). I said as long as everyone is treated the same, fine, we'll just hold one space. That's not good enough for him now, he explains that if they "run out" of space, he plans to start using up the reserved spaces(!!). XXXXX tries to ask about what reasonable things like eating together, talking with our friends, you-know, calm XXXXX-like talk. It doesn't work, he leaves.
alltracin 09-21-2006 10:40 PM

sheesh

Here's a local's report on our board of the paddock fiasco:
I went out this morning to HPT. I was there before the Gates opened at 10am. It was cold and rainy. I thought it was going to be a smooth operation like it has been in the past. Well....It was a cluster.

They escort you out to your spot which is fine and all. But where the problem is...they don't record a space number down to know that they've already given that space away. Actually, there aren't even numbers on the spaces to ID them at all.

So the guy just dropped me off at my spot. So as I was sitting there admiring my excellent spot. It hit me....What happens here in a minute, when I pull out of my spot, and return to work. What's going to keep someone from taking my spot? So I head back up to the guy controlling the escorts...the response I got was "...huh...not sure how to keep from giving the space away. I guess just don't leave."

So then I was happy to find that Phil Osbourne was out there in his usual fashion as Paddock Marshal. But the difference this year, was that he had no control. Nor did he have numbered spots to record. He was recording sections, but thats it.

So I went back to my spot....and I'll be damned....they already pulled someone else into my spot that they just gave me 3minutes earlier. Luckily, the guy hadn't unloaded anything yet, and I was able to talk him into moving over a spot.

Then I went back and screamed at the HPT guy that just gave my spot away again. He had the same response as the other guy. "Huh?"..."How am I going to remember which of the 1200 spaces I've given away already?" as he spit out his chewing tobacco and dumped the water out of the brim of his cowboy hat. Yeah...we're dealing with genises here!

So I went back to work, and got a couple big wire spools. Wrote my Car/Class/Name on them, and went out there again, to try to mark my territory. Guess what....another guy in my spot!!! This guy was a Kart guy, and he didn't want to be in that spot so he was easy to talk out of it. Karts are supposed to be all paddocked together. Not out in the middle with everyone else. But these HPT guys don't care....

So I'm just letting everyone know what to expect. You might bring something out to mark your territory. Everyone was complaining, so hopefully, they'll have it worked out soon. I was the 1st 20 in the gate. So they were still pretty clueless.
zzyzx 09-22-2006 12:33 AM

BTW, the storm just passed my place and Topeka is clear. Should be dry tomorrow. FYI, this is the doppler rader link for Kansas City / Topeka.
jcroy66 09-22-2006 04:50 AM

In addition to the already mentioned paddock issues, Jason also indicated:

1) Each tow rig gets one spot. Doesn't matter if you have 2 (or 4!) people driving, you get one spot per rig. No more 1 spot/competitor.
2) People are getting stuck in the grass spots.
3) Jason had to wait 30 minutes before being escorted to his spot. Since there are no more assigned and marked spots, they aren't letting people just drive themselves to their spots.
SPOOLN 09-22-2006 06:05 AM

Good luck to all with that cluster.
Pacobeagle 09-22-2006 07:19 AM

So, I should get some Super Swampers for my truck? I hope not to get stuck in the grass(mud by now).

Anyhow, good luck to all, I shall see you there sometime tomorrow.

HPT is running paddock, right? no assigned numbers and they have no way of knowing what happens with a spot after it is "assigned", right? i vote for a paddock wide game of musical chairs. if everyone works together we can fit everyone in and get groups that want to paddock together that ability.
solo-x 09-22-2006 08:07 AM
You mean that you helping me clean tires tues/wed isn't gonna be tops?
seriously, home depot is going to have a run on plywood sheet. that's what i'd do if i had a vehicle that could carry something that big. stop at home depot on your way in, pick up 3 sheets of 1/2" 4x8 and lay that down in the paddock spot. your own 12x8 'paved' paddock spot. HPT will probably charge you a fee for using your own wood, but at least you don't have to worry about not having a rally car when it rains and your paddock spot turns into a mud bog.

clean tires? why? we have a 1/4 mile drive to get to the course. should be plenty of time to clean them off.

here's a good thought for you. can you imagine what my car owners are gonna be like dealing with the HPT staff? hopefully i don't have to bail them out of jail or something. that's my biggest apprehension. adversity sucks, but if i get all the runs i paid for and the event runs ok, all will be forgiven. dealing with a bunch of other rightfully and righteously pissed off people for a week is NOT going to be fun no matter what else happens.
KC 09-22-2006 08:22 AM

I wish it'd fit in the tahoe. I have about 6 sheets of the stuff in the barn. I'm going to cut up one sheet into 4 sections today after work. That, and I'm bringing a tarp from Job Lot to put under the car and the plywood on top of that.
clean tires? why? we have a 1/4 mile drive to get to the course. should be plenty of time to clean them off.
But EVERYONE will be using that same 1/4 mile... after a while it's going to be a dirt road to start.
here's a good thought for you. can you imagine what my car owners are gonna be like dealing with the HPT staff?
*shudder* I immediately thought of them when I saw the 'eye witness' account posted to the mailing list last night. "Who's got the biggest temper..... ohh, I wanna see that!!!"

I'm going to wait to see where I'm paddocked 1st before I buy more wood. With the way things are going, I'd probably be on the asphalt.

So based on the most recent post at http://kcautox.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1137 , it sounds like perhaps that whole "1 space per rig" is not always enforced. What a surprise.

Not a half bad idea, but....

I have to work paddock on Sunday. Hopefully no one will show up. When I worked last year, and we had marked spaces. It was still a cluster. So this year should be a lesson in patience.

I'm going to lowes tonight for some plywood. Then I'm going to grap a crap load of hinges. And then cut the plywood into several sections. Connect the hinges and hopefully be able to fold it up in a nice neat package that will fit in the back of the RS. Guess I'll be getting a couple tarps too.

Max is hauling ass along with Jay B. (From AZ). We on the other hand discovered our 60 run Yoks are dead dead dead. This would not have been the case but between discount tire and fedex our new set never showed up. So we are dead in the water as it were. =/

Personally I felt the Yoks were just about worthless at 120 runs for anything except having fun at locals, and that's with a two driver car so that it had fewer heat cycles on them. The tires that we were going to use for the Finale that I put into the basement for next year had 8 runs in the rain on them, just enough to get the shave marks off but probably not even enough for a first heat cycle. I thought we had managed to time it just perfect except for me losing my job and not being able to go. Next year if money works out right I'll be on fresh or one heat cycle tires for each Pro because for me at least they're much faster than even ones that have even three or four heat cycles on them.

Sounds like several people ran into issues with their tires at the last minute. I know Greg M. was holding off on buying his national's tires until after the beginning of Sept. Glad to see that he got his and feel bad for those who couldn't get their tires in time.
Aaron B 09-22-2006 10:35 PM

What the heck happened in F Stock? Slower than all the ST classes, G stock and barely faster than H stock
