i got similar results... i think there are 5 wires total, its the one right in the middle you need to snip/pull out.

yup, 5 wires. I cut the one in the middle. dont know what the problem is, weird
anyway im traveling at the moment and wont be able to take a look again for at least a week n a half. Ill take off the glovebox and take another look.

I'm really interested in this thread. I'm installing my HID's soon and don't want to burn them out with DRL, hence I would like to disable them. I'll try taking mine out in the week and let you know how it goes for my cruise control...

Possible that it's just coincidence and you need to get some warranty work done eh? Hopefully they don't notice or say nothin' about the cut wire!
I hope I can get the pin out on mine! I hate the DRL's.

My cruise is still working after disabling the DRL, the plug was a PITA to get out though (it definitely didn't just pop out with a toothpick). The HIDs look great with the stock projectors. I even lined up next to my mom's C70 (stock HIDs obviously) and aimed both at our grarage door. Had just about the same cut-off point. :D

ok, so I believe this tread is old.. but.. I'm installing HID's into my 07 WRX wagon, now here's my "hopefully successfull" plan...
I look at the wiring schematic for my car, and the only that drops the voltage for the DRL's is the resistor (located beside the turbo on RH shock tower), now I still want the DRL's to work, but with HID's you can't have half voltage or else you get the techno strobing lights effect, so would this work..????
1. unplug stock DRL relay.
2. jump two leads going to relay.
3. install HID's as per normal.
What I'm thinking this will do, is make the headlights behave like a 07 STi's with the ebrake switch being able to turn off the lights, also it would make the headlights behave as per normal with the other switch positions..

You could just leave your headlights on all of the time, as they are auto-off when you turn off the ignition... just an idea, although I've heard that since HID start-up draws a large amount of power, you shouldn't turn them on until the car is running. I could be wrong though.

On page 2, there are amazing pictures w/ the glovebox/pin out method.
If you're talking about unplugging the relay under the hood on the passenger side, I can go downstairs right now to take a picture of exactly where it is if you want?

No need to rip it out.... lol. Just use a thin screwdriver (the tiny spectacle repair kind) and push down on the metal tab that holds it in on the inside of the connector, then push it out with a toothpick or whatever from the outside.

But pearl. if you read what others have said, this method only works for the HIDs if you're using the default factory plug for the plug and play systems....
if it's done by direct battery hook up or whatever you guys call it... then the drl relay wont work....
Myabe i got it all wrong but that's sorta my understanding from reading.

i have HIDs in my car now. If I disconect the wire, as was shown, the drl will turn off and wont have the strobe light effect. Is this correct? OR will they still work?
| AxlxA | 08-21-2007 07:04 AM |
what's the strobe light effect you're talking about?
Normally this DRL unplug works only for the aftermarket HID conversion kits. specifically the ones using the car's power source.
If drl is ON/remains plugged in, then when you use your HIDs, passenger side might flicker. This is due to the power necessary to run the HIDs, which is more than what DRL can provide. So you need to unplug the DRL to let the HIDs run on more power.
Am I making any sense?

Maybe I'm oversimplifying things here, but I have an 07 WRX wagon.. but my thinking is.. wouldn't the simplest way be to disconnect/ ground/ jump the wire on the E-Brake switch so the DRL module thinks the park brake is always engaged.. the head/ fog lamps will operate in the normal matter, but the DRLs stay off during normal driving..I've yet to consult my wiring diagrams.. but it's just an idea...
| BJC | 11-19-2007 10:43 PM |
That would likely work, but I want to keep my DRL functionality. From looking at another thread it seems I need to by-passs the resister in the engine bay... just need to know how to do that! :)

Get a DRL "module" from Daniel Stern lighting. You basically splice it into the existing wiring to power your front turn signal bulbs as DRLs rather than your low beam projectors. The turn signals still work normally, and you
re burning a much cheaper bulb. You'll notice that many GM vehicles do the same, because yellow is more vivid during the day than white light.
I have thought about doing this myself, only I don't like to hack into my wiring. I might still do it down the road for the safety benefit. I just disabled my DRLs for now...

i noticed people are having trouble taking the pin out...
the way i see it is...
you dont have to remove the pin...instead....just tape the other end that the pin goes into...i used electrical tape and taped it over the other end instead removing the pin...so when the pin goes back into the other end, there is no metal contact and therefore DRL is removed and dont have to worry about warranties.
lets hope you guys know what im talking about....
I tried the same thing but I ran into a little problem. At first i tried to push the pin out just like in the pics with a tooth pick and then some other random blunt items but it wouldnt budge (i removed the little white plastic peice n everything). So i said screw it and just cut the wire. At first everything seemed fine and the DRLs were disabled. This was last night. This morning I take the car out and the "Cruise" light on the dash starts blinking...
I tested the cruise control and it wouldnt work or respond to anything so the light just kept flashing and didnt stop. THe DRLs were disabled but it was at the expense of the stupid cruise light flashing in the dash and no more cruise control. I think im going to reconnect the wire and see if anyone else has similar issues...
hi everyone.. i did this mod a few weeks ago.. and since i had trouble pushing the pin out i ended up cutting and taping the wire.. DRL was disabled as intended.. now tonite i got the same flashing cruise light and my check engine light came on.. could it be that if the pin stays but wire's cut.. it detects the pin but no signal or something.. causing the wire cut method to have errors?
i have lightwerkz retrofit STi HID + ballasts with a relay to the battery if that's useful info..
thanks
