I had it tuned yesterday, and the tech comes in to me and asks if I have some type of aftermarket transmission. He couldnt figure out how to shift. I told him the gears are posted on the gauge cluster. It was funny.

here's what I've done with my 4eat shifter as of yet -- still debating on whether or not to boot it, yet im pretty sure i'll be getting a smaller/round/ball/cool knob soon:

I sometimes transport lease return cars from one auction to another. I "acquired" this leather knob from a Mercedes S500. I had to drill it out and use a bit of super glue to prevent it from twisting too easily. The plastic on the inside appears to be too soft to grip the threads on the stick.
Well gang, I took my 4EAT short shifter mod to the next level. Some of you might like it, and some might not. I have some custom work to do on the boot, in order to lose some of the extra leather. But, you get the idea. I'm not trying to pass my auto off as a manual, I just like the look. It's cleaner to me.
I simply swapped my 4EAT shifter console w/one I bought on Ebay for $35. As soon as Japanparts has new stock, I have the S204 dash kit coming! It will look really nice with the all-black dash.
Let me know what you think...

I'm not gonna lie man, that's the sweetest 4EAT set-up I've ever seen.
I was thinking about doing something like this ( the boot + knob) a long time ago but didn't know how it would look.
I like the black knob, but IMO the Spoon Sports titanium knob would kill.

Love the floor mats too. :p

I think the stock leather knob is perfection. However I need to sand and paint the silver gate trim black as it is a scratch magnet.
Altho I have a crazy urge to paint my shift knob red after getting the new TC. As a precaution if nothing else.

I don't think the 5/6mt guys know how stupid tall our shift knobs are - it almost gets in the way of the climate controls. The pic of my microphone knob in post #52 shows how tall the stock shifter is - I believe the microphone is only slightly taller.

Correct. For me at least, it was a 'look' factor. I wanted a clean cabin. I REALLY wanted the S204 JDM dash kit. However, it wasn't made for the 4EAT. So, I improvised (w/the boot) to hid the mismatch overlap of the different shif surrounds. Regardless, it looks much better than stock IMO.

i have a momo fake cf shadow knob on my 2002, hollow so the shifter slides all the way up into the knob, making it sit low enough without cutting. I added a manual boot/cf shifter trim from another member after getting sick of the scuffed shifter gate i had tried to paint black. looks good kinda like an auto 3 series, not pretending it's a manual or anything but the knob inthe auto is high and bulky.

You bring up this thread http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=294164&page=187 from 6 months ago to generalize my character? Except for the petty insult, I called a spade a spade and graciously defended my stance and acknowledged his displeasure with my "busy" interior. I'm sure you'll agree, if and when you begin modding your car you'll end up with all the gauges necessary to prevent your motor from blowing up (they haven't saved me yet).
Most are annoyed when people respond to a thread where overtly negative feedback is not necessary. The shifter boot/knob idea is novel but I prefer the stock look. The poster had a good reason for the boot, though.

I don't understand. What is the point? It has no function. And don't tell me that it is more comfortable to grip. From park to park you are only touching the shifter for maybe 1/2 second.

OEM is almost 3" taller and it's a way to minimalize it's useless intrusion in the cabin. Don't you manual trans guys understand how embarrassing it is to drive an automatic??? We're just trying to hide the fact that we're all a bunch of panzies - a shorter shifter is harder to see!
I'm looking to get $10 for shipping materials, etc.

Update

So my shift mod has gone full circle.
I just couldnt get used to the shift boot on the S204 surround. I tried many different things to get a better look. I finally decided to find an interior paint that matched the S204 black. Plasti Dip to the rescue! After playing around with all the parts, I was able to remove everything in order to paint it the right way. I painted the old gray 4EAT surround, and swapped the gray ashtray w/the S204 kits black ashtray. It looks so clean in person.

Not so much as easy as regular spray paint, you can't really sand down if you make a mistake, at least not on my friend's Audi rings that we did.

It looks pretty non-reflective in all the pictures, is this the case? I need to spray the instrument binnacle in my Eunos (Miata) as it is pretty shiney and in bright sunshine reflects off the windscreen :( I was going to get it flocked but this looks like a good DIY alternative...
