brcewane 06-19-2006 09:54 AM

Thanks everyone... damn rain has rolled in.. won't be able to paint them until tomorrow after work. Hopefully I will get some painted pictures and some pics of them assembled without the lenses on them.
ptirmal 06-19-2006 10:30 AM

Looked better than I imagined them to be from the start of this thread... good job!
stentorian 06-19-2006 02:32 PM

I have been following this thread since it was started, very nice work so far! I'd buy a set. :alien:  :disco:

******* UPDATE ************

Didn't get the rain they were talking about so I was able to tape off the chrome and paint the rest of the inner housing. So here are the update pics.. Going to let the paint cure for 24 hours and then put the amber turn signal and projectors back in.

looks awesome..cant wait to see them when they are finished and on your car!
4wdrift 06-19-2006 11:07 PM

Hit it with a few coats of clear. Make sure you use the same base as the metalic paint, acrylic on acrylic etc...
Hank3 06-19-2006 11:47 PM

Looking fabulous!!!
deadred 06-20-2006 12:03 AM

clamdip 06-20-2006 02:52 AM

all i gotta say is WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!!!!! makes me wanna get a pair myself. you could probably make a little side cash out of this (granted that you have the time), but this could be one of the best projects yet. great job man! :D
awdbeast 06-20-2006 06:08 AM

Wow. Phenomenal idea, vision, determination, execution, and last but not least, balls. I can't wait to see what these look like completely finished and installed.

Great work and please keep us posted.
Cation 06-20-2006 10:27 AM

Nice work man!!! This is inspiring me to do the same. Gotta love the DIY mods!!!
brcewane 06-20-2006 07:49 PM

********* UPDATE ***********

The paint was dry so I assembled the headlights tonight, and also busted out the rotary tool and got the outer lenses cut to size.... Hopefully this weekend I will silicone the front lenses onto the housings..

And now the pics

I just set the lenses on there to see what they will end up looking like:

congrats, those look pretty darn good :disco:
darknightohio 06-20-2006 08:10 PM

Nice work! They would look even better if you could get some sort of reflector behind the turn signal similar to the JDM/EMD projectors.
silent_rob_95 06-20-2006 08:21 PM

^ thats a nice idea. get some composite silver leafing around it. ;)
imprezive one 06-20-2006 08:28 PM

I actually think it looks a lot cleaner/better without that silver reflector behind the turn signal (might not be as safe, but whatever). Nice job man! Can't wait to see pics of it on the car.
Dragon Wagon 06-20-2006 08:38 PM

lots of work but it looks professional very nice job
Sparcomx 06-20-2006 08:56 PM

very nice.. great job.. now how much is it going to cost me for a set???
brcewane 06-20-2006 09:15 PM

I have my stock lights right now painted the same color over the reflective surface for the turn signal and they work great.. so I'm not worried about light output.. If I were to do it again, I would consider molding in the stock turn signal reflector in there.. it has some nice shapes to it.
JohnnyWas 06-21-2006 12:11 AM

cant wait to see these on the car.

what a great idea.
MachinesWRX 06-21-2006 12:26 AM

interesting project, cant wait to see finished product!
natoli4 06-21-2006 01:04 AM

are the lenses going to glue or butt to the face of the light or do they "wrap" around the outside of the housing? Hard to tell. I think that if your end up siliconing the lenses on and they butt up it's going to be difficult to get a clean inner edge ya know? If you are indead going to but the lenses you may want to tape off the outer edge of the lense and spray it with black gloss paint so it hides the edge much like the way some cars windshields have a black edge...something to consider after all this time and effort! I know that it took three full days of work and sanding just to do my inner pieces...good luck with the finishing touches!

Yeah they are going to siliconed to the face of the lights.. not wrap around.

I'm thinking of doing some rubber stripping round the edges kind of like the stock ones do. But yeah, covering the edge will be something that I need to figure out to make them look good.

The first step was to use a black sharpie to cover the cut edge like they do on the stock housings so that you can't see where the blade cut them.
natoli4 06-21-2006 12:56 PM

I'd say even some good blk tape that would wrap around that edge would work well!
introspecive 06-21-2006 01:41 PM

awesome work. i wish i had a fraction of your talent. i'd end up ruining it and throwing everything away.
lawn boy 06-21-2006 03:19 PM

cant wait to see them on the car. they really do look like JDM's!!!

those are different projectors than what the ebay headlights came with I hope?
elsanto 06-21-2006 03:28 PM

DIY 4 ever! haha sweet man.
Saucy 06-21-2006 03:28 PM

we should do a group buy for these haha, make this guy some money
elsanto 06-21-2006 03:36 PM

^I still prefer my black chrome sti's, but i hacked them to have proper beam pattern also.. so there is a little DIY in that eh?
IIdiceII 06-21-2006 03:39 PM

nice!! I painted my stockers the same color. graphite wheel paint from duplicolor.
brcewane 06-21-2006 05:35 PM
I'd say even some good blk tape that would wrap around that edge would work well!
If I were to do it again, I would make it so that the ebay housing fit into the stock lense cover, instead of gluing the lense onto the front... live and learn.

I thought about that after, I had them painted and one lense cut and ready to go.. LOL :D
brcewane 06-21-2006 10:29 PM

Figured out how to NOT silicone the lenses onto the front tonight... but also figured out how to do it... so I will try round 2 tomorrow night.
KAX 06-21-2006 10:40 PM

good luck. it would suck if you did all this work just for the lenses to not fit
Otter91 06-22-2006 12:49 AM

wow! that is amazing! Very nice work! Where is that guy that was talking S*** about your fiberglassing skills now? haha
brcewane 06-22-2006 07:24 PM
cant wait to see them on the car. they really do look like JDM's!!!

OK.. don't shoot me or jump to conclusions... Yes for right now they ARE the actual projectors that came from ebay. These are the newer ones where the low beams are actual projector units.

From what I have researched on the board, the consensus is that the low beam reflector units that came with the first version sold of these lights suck crap. And these claims have been backed up by research performed by members of this board as can be seen here:
http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=609978

However, all I have heard about the new units that have actual projector housings are that they are bad too. But no one has shown any evidence of this in beam pattern pics etc. Basically it has been "I've seen them" or "a friend has them" and "they suck just as bad".

So for the fact that I already have them, I figured I would give them a shot and post some pictures of the beam pattern for everyone to see for themselves.

I have taken into consideration that I may have to replace the low beam projector units for these headlights when building them. The Hella 90mm modules have a mounting mechanism that I would have to fabricate on the back of the headlight so it would be relatively easy to cut out the old ones without damaging my hard work.

So stay tuned, and we will have actual photographic evidence if the new projector units suck as much as the old ones.
brcewane 06-22-2006 07:39 PM

The lenses are being siliconed on now... will have some touch-up silicone to do as well... Once it dries I am going to do a bit of paint around the outside of the clear lense with some Krylon Fusion black paint.. it will help with some of the blade marks that the dremel left on the back of the lense that show through.

nerdydorkus 06-22-2006 07:42 PM

you sir, are a badass
KAX 06-22-2006 08:09 PM

those are beautiful. i thought they looked good without the lenses, but that makes them 10x better.
introspecive 06-23-2006 09:32 AM

excellent work . bravo bravo
brcewane 06-23-2006 10:02 AM

*********** UPDATE ***********
Did the silicone touchups this morning and took the tape off that was holding the lenses in place.

Tonight I will be taping off the areas of the lense that I am going to paint semi-gloss black to cover some of the blade marks on the underside of the cut edge of the lense.. Should have some pics tonight..
clamdip 06-23-2006 12:47 PM

you should see if you can source a projector lens for the highbeams. i'm sure that would look much better and better light output.
natoli4 06-23-2006 12:54 PM

looking good!
gnarlyWRX 06-23-2006 01:19 PM

oh man looking sick

jdmdave 06-23-2006 06:33 PM

very nice job
ptirmal 06-23-2006 06:56 PM

I actually like it better without the lense on... since they're hella 90mm units (right?) they should be weatherproof and the lense is just for aesthetics right?

Good job!
