Atlanta Region DoubleX Challenge, 7/1-2, Gwinnett Co. Fairgrounds

This autocross format ranks right up there with ProSolo in my book, and in some ways, it's even better. Why? No timing during eliminations means no timing problems!!!! It's also truly heads up, and believe me, coming around the final turn and seeing your competition right there, and knowing you have to make it to the double cones that signal the finish line before they do.... Yeah, it's cool. ;)
Lots of $$$ and such are on the line. For $55, you not only get to participate in the two day event, but also the event party -- a reincarnation of the ol' Team Underdog Petersburg ProSolo Cookout (TUPPSCO). There's even going to be a rockabilly band, Blacktop Rockets, playing!
This isn't a "regional" event -- this should rank up there with National Tours and ProSolos.... well, without the organizational disasters that have plagued those events this year. ;)
I've posted the prize list below. Bounce over to the website for more information.

Phil and I are sorely tempted, but that's a haul for us. Especially given that we're using an extra day of vacation for the ProFinale now (a day that Phil didn't really have). We're debating bumming/buying a ride and flying in. Can't decide if it's worth the cash to do that or not though.

It's going to be a lot of fun. Believe me, if you like ProSolos (and I know you do), you're going to like this a lot.
Plus, the Atlanta crowd is pretty fun to hang out with, even if it does include Joel and Heyward. ;)
Hey!! Why isn't Hoppe signed up????

I've done a Pro at Gwinnett county fairgrounds before and I'm curious how they'll get 2 "mirrored" courses?
Do they use a different parking lot that other than the usual hilly one?
I actually answered this after discussing it with Mike King. He's done one of these before and I understand it now...

Double National that weekend at Roebling. Every big road racing weekend, there is a big autox. DC and Peru Pro, Pro finale (then again, it will be at the same site :p), this event.
-Tom
who has found that there aren't enough weekend to roadrace and autox nationally.

If I'm reading this correctly.....A lady could stand to walk away with
$200
$150
$200 + tires
$150
= $700 + tires???
A guy would max out at...
$200
$200 + Tires
= $400 + Tires???
I'm guessing Pittman Performace is owned by a woman?? :)

4th of July weekend... driving to Atlanta from all the way up here. I'd be crazy. Wicked crazy. That and I don't have the $350 for gas money alone.

It certainly sounds unique and entertaining, even if I've read this same thread on at least 2 other message boards and another one here on NASIOC as well. (This being the best of those threads however as the detail is far better.) :)

The Doublecross is going to rock. If you live within 10 hours, I'd strongly recommend it. You stand to win more than you would at a ProSolo, and it will be much more fun.

I'm not positive but I think Jen's right. I haven't been involved in the Doublecross planning at all, which makes me happy. Of course I'll have my nose buried in books for grad school for 3 years starting in the fall, and I'll look back on the autocross organizing days fondly.
That's how I read it too. Which is why I'm signed up for the open challenge. ;)
Yeah, that's another of my concerns about spending the cash to fly down. Since we simply don't have the time to take our own car down, we would either have to find 2 different single-driver cars that are willing to take co-drivers, or I'd have to sign up for the Ladies Challenge. Which just doesn't sound like as much fun to me. :) Not just because of the lower prize money. But because last I checked, there were very few women signed up in the Ladies Challenge. It would be like "2 rounds, ok, we're done."
Plus, it'd be nice to see Tom again, and it looks like he won't be around that weekend.
Anyway, we haven't quite decided yet. I guess I should decide today though, cuz otherwise flights are gonna skyrocket with <7 days notice. But we're leaning towards skipping it this year. Maybe next year, if they do it again!

I talked to Heyward last night, and he confirmed that the Ladies Challenge is a seperate prize pool from the Open Challenge. In other words you are elligible for one or the other, but not both.

OK confirmed. We're a no-go this year. Flights are up almost $150 each from when I looked a few days ago. If this happens again next year, someone please let us know in January/February when we're scheduling vacation for the year. :) If the event is scheduled that far in advance, of course. :)

ps. unless you're planning on changing your name to Jeff Mabrey, I think you need to reconsider your ability to take me out of the running. Either that, or try out those 275s so you can avoid the conage. ;)

Mr. Fehrman,
I am taken aback by this unprovoked hostility against me. I was simply attempting to promote goodwill amongst you and Mr. Walter in the aforementioned thread. Please let me make ammends for this by offering you some advice to utilize during the Doublecross event. I would recomment that at each and every launch you do not think to yourself, "Oh NO0004sss!!!! If I launch t4h fast4rest at the start my half-shaftz will breakorz lyk the STI in Peru!!!!!" Definatley do not let your mind dwell on this. I repeat do not dwell on this as this line of thinking may cloud your focus.
Also, I would like to remind you that your vehicle is superior in every way to the lowly MINI's in GS. The MINI's are no match for your AWD, nearly unlimited turbo boost, and tires and wheels as wide as can be utilized. You could never lose to a MINI and think to yourself, "I am teh Noooooob!!!!! Teh girlie car b4at me for teh benjamins!!!!! I have teh mad sucksorzzzzz!!!!!!!" These types of thoughts are an obvious fabrication as this kind of defeat could never occurr.
In closing I would like to express my gratitude for the spirit of wholesome competition and camaraderie that I feel expressed in my direction when I attend events in the Atlanta region. What other region would go to the lengths of organizing an impromptu mid event impound just for one vehicle? This special attention that was graced on my vehicle made me feel that I was a special guest for the remainder of the competition.
I look forward to competing with all of my Atlanta friends at this event.
Sincerely,
Mr. Oliveira

Probably ATL's resident graphic artist, Andrew James.
And Joe.... I lost to a girlie car this weekend with the STi... and the driver was wearing a pink shirt at that. I don't think the STi will lose to a girlie car two weekends in a row, but if you're rather come up against the ground pounding green terror, by all means, take Joel out of the running early. ;)
After all, I'd hate to see him cry when I beat him in the Camaro. He was upset enough that I was only 0.041 off his times in his own car. ;)

lol. Well, the motor is not technically "blowed up", it just won't go a full national race without burning enough oil to turn off vt4K.
I'm going to drive whatever someone lets me drive (as long as its on Hankooks). First shot is something with vt4K that I can drive for a few more events including Nationals :)

No, there are classes. That's how the indexing is set. So if your STi is classed in AS, you get a head start if you're up against an STi that is modified (like an STU or BSP one). But if you're up against a lowly stock class Camaro (FS), you get to wait momentarily before getting the green to go. ;)

Ahhh, like bracket racing, except class based instead of dailing in a time. Interesting.

You have it right. You launch, then 10 seconds later you wonder what the heck is that loud noise as the F125 cart leaves the lights.

Randy, I guarantee there will be video, and I'll be doing a writeup for some magazines too. Plus, I can describe it in detail -- with diagrams! -- for you if I come to the AI meeting tonight.

GAH! I couldn't make tonight's! (though I can see out of both eyes now, which is a plus  )
Do a write up, with pics, with video, and I'll host it... somewhere. I want these things to move north!

Yeah, well, you'd better check yourself against that Alfaru that's coming down from NC.... I just noticed pleiades on the entry list. ;)
You'd better manage more than 0.041 faster than me this weekend if you expect to be taking home anything!
Mr. Fehrman,
I am taken aback by this unprovoked hostility against me.
Sincerely,
Mr. Oliveira

Dear Mr. Oliveira,
As I have not seen your car this season, I can only hope that you have prepared it with the JCW package and moved to STX, as I fear your little heart may be broken without an uber-soft GS index to bolster you. If you have not already made the move to STX, I will remind you that this would prevent the need to change tires before you pack up and drive home early on Sunday. Furthermore, Saturday night is a happening time in midtown Atlanta, and I wouldn't want you to miss the chance to get in on some hot man-on-man action with the other Mini drivers simply because your silk blouse got all sweaty while changing rubbers.
Sincerely,
Mr. Fehrman
