ATL.....Doublecross trash talk thread part 4

How did everyone like the course? Since I wasn't running the event, I got to pre-drive/test the course, and I thought it was an awesome "cross-class" friendly design.

-Tom
Coming up the hill into the slalom was fiv'in awesome in a STi.

The long sweeper down the hill was a blast as well.

I didn't like the front straight/braking area, but that was mainly because it was REALLY bad time to hit the top of second gear for me/STU/AS.
Crash477 07-02-2007 05:55 PM

I agree with the above totally!
CamaroFS34 07-02-2007 07:15 PM

Obviously, as one of the big winners and an Atlanta Region member, I'm a little biased, but I definitely loved the event.

The weather sucked, yes, but the torrential downpours held off until after the site was cleared, both Friday night and Sunday night. It's summer in Georgia; I don't think you can expect mid 70s and low humidity. You can hope and pray for it, but don't be surprised if your deity of choice ignores you.

The course(s) was fun. It was missing the optional entry slalom that was so interesting last year that two weeks after the event, people were still debating which side was faster, but it was still a good, flowing course.

Working grid, I saw some things that could certainly be improved, which I've already talked to Heyward about. I thought the announcing could have been better too, but I think the problem there was simply the announcer wasn't sure what to say during qualifying.

Long days, but a hell of a lot of fun. It was a blast running against Tara in the Ladies final round; I don't think I've been that nervous against anyone since my first Ladies final round against Audrey Harnish back in 2000!

Blue Ridge Region FTW, eh? ;)

BTW, where'd Joe Oliviera end up? All the smack talk and then he pulls out prematurely? <shaking head>

+1 Blue Ridge FTW!!!!

Congrats on your win Karen and congrats to Tara on her 2nd place finish. :)

Tons of thanks to all ATL region members for their hard work and sleepless nights.

Tons of thanks to tires plus for flipping 2 Hoosiers at 9am sunday morning!

It was certainly interesting, but I couldn't get the hang of where my RTs needed to be without knowing what they were. ....hense redlighting out of the challenge. *shrug* I still won some money and a Hoosier. woo. Oh yeah and I almost caught Danny Carroll, whereas I was ages off of him at Nationals. Too bad I now can't catch my codriver.
solo2wrx 07-02-2007 10:41 PM

Justin you drove really well this weekend. I feel your pain with the RL's. I was pushing the lights pretty hard in the challenge and it came back to bite me in the fourth round when I launched and the car actually hooked up instead of spinning its tires like it had done all weekend. I am really starting to envy you and Karen for bringing home 3 sets of Hoosiers in two weekends.

Hopefully I will see you again soon so we can face off again. I got my new race wheels in today and the new Hoosiers will be in this week sometime. I wished that I had brought the Crossfire down to Atlanta though so I could have faced off against Danny as well.
Imprezivblue 07-02-2007 10:57 PM

Thanks to heyward and team solo for all of their dedication for putting on a successful event! Couldn't have enjoyed it without you all!

The stars all aligned this past weekend. I was up against some stiff competition but the car felt great. I know I'm still learning but this is a nice step in the right direction after last weekend's performance. Great Job in the final Karen! I'm glad I could have given you a little competition!!! :)
knowcones 07-02-2007 11:57 PM

So- without the optional slalom, I guess the debate is, which start did you prefer?

I averaged the best times for each course for the entire event, turns out the left was 0.173 faster :)
Crash477 07-02-2007 11:59 PM

I preferred starting right. On Sunday, the only times I lost were when I started left.
thrdeye 07-03-2007 12:01 AM

Lane choice was car dependant, IMO. If you were in the right in an STi, you could avoid a 2-3-2 shift and get a better launch.
Lane choice was car dependant, IMO. If you were in the right in an STi, you could avoid a 2-3-2 shift and get a better launch.
I preferred left, and I'll tell you why.

I didn't have problems with my entry into the straight, so I wasn't concerned about screwing that up. In fact, screwing up my entry into the straight was pretty low on my concerns list. I saw the straight as nothing but a benefit to the WRX.

I saw the finish (if I started on the left) as a benefit, as I could scramble for first and the "instant on power" if I needed a little extra "oomph" across the finish line, where if I was on the straight, I'd already be flat out.

If I started on the left, as I came out of the three cone slalom approaching the final two turns to the finish line, I could easily see where my competition was without distracting me from my own line (peripheral vision FTW).

And I started from the left in every round of the Ladies Challenge, and was undefeated. Of course, now that I see the exact times, I realize that when I told Junior that I'd "stopped f--king around," I wasn't exaggerating. I knew I'd pretty much tied Chris Peterson on those first two afternoon runs, and seeing the times, I wasn't imagining things. And if a DS WRX is running with a decently driven AS STi... well.... when I compared my times to DS open (Danny Carroll, who finished 8th at Nationals), and GS open (Craig Wilcox, GS National Champion).... all I can say is, "Why the hell can't I drive like that at Nationals?!?!"

I really can't thank Heyward, Megan, Nathan, Kevin, Hardy, Billy, Cubby... and the rest of TeamSolo for the work put into this event, both during and before. They had basically no National SCCA support besides the okay to use the ProSolo name, and for the second year in a row, this event is one to talk about for weeks afterwards. Thank you!!!!

I got OWN3D!

But at least I won some money. :)

Unannounced government audit at work pwned me. They at least showed up before the cancellation deadline so that I was able to get my money back. I will find the one of you who pulled strings to have them show up on the same week as the doublex. Vengeance will be mine.

Oh, lil girl, please never use my name and "pulls out prematurely" again in the same sentece. Kthxbye. :P

Was there really a keg by the hotel pool? :( Was Rankins really 2 and out?? The red bull girls were there???

I missed out.
So- without the optional slalom, I guess the debate is, which start did you prefer?
Sunday morning I had decided to start on the left because of the long straight (13.000 @109 in the 1/4 mile :)) and I would only have that short right hander into the finish as opposed to a big sweeping right-hander if I started in the right (my car doesn't put power down well in RH turns -- sucky OEM Torsen diff).

But talking with Mike Johnson about it, he figured that if he started on the left the biggest opportunity for a mistake for not only the competition but for himself was that long straight. Go too fast or get too aggressive and brake too late. I saw a lot of people do just that on Saturday and figured I would give people that opportunity to shoot themselves during the rounds on Sunday. ;)

Interesting though that when I went up against Robert Carpenter in the Super Challenge, he had lane choice and lined up on the left side and told me beforehand that's what he had been doing all day. And he of course was the overall winner. And Karen won the Ladies Challenge lining up only on the left. But I only lost once lining up on the right (against Robert) and lost both times lining up on the left (against Mike). [shrug]

I think most of the drivers that made it to the challenge probably were disciplined enough not to screw themselves on that long straight.

I, on the other hand, screwed myself at every possible moment.

Congrats on your solid performance Pat. You went pretty darn far in the bracket - how many free hoosiers did you take home?

Except for me of course, as I got in the challenge simply by f'ing up! (And qualifying well on the 1st day)
