AWD warning sticker part 1

AWD warning sticker

GROUP BUY going on now. We need 10 more people for the group buy!! If you are interested, please follow this link. http://www.i-club.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=130339

This is something I've been working on for my car. Since I partially debadged the back, I'm a little nervous about having my car towed and the tower not knowing my car is AWD.

Just wondering if anyone else is interested in something like this. Also, I'd appreciate any feedback, suggestions, improvements, etc etc.

If anyone wants, I can send you the Illustrator file, or a tiff, eps, postscript,, whatever you want.

Personally, I'd like to have this printed out on that plastic stuff that sticks to glass (then it doesn't leave sticky stuff and can be taken off easily). Then, I'd probably have two, slap them on the inside of the windows when I'm parked somewhere with the possibility of being towed.
chsbla 12-23-2001 07:46 PM

thats a real cool idea! When i go downtown the rules change like once an hour on where you can park, what time, and for how long, its real stupid, at least this way they can't say they didn't know. i'd want one!
late,
Chris
YaZahX 12-23-2001 09:40 PM

you kow for a fact that they will not pay for damages, even if every rim had that on it they would say they didnt see it and its not there fault...

i would get one if you sell them its a great idea!

side note: every tow truck driver should know not to wheel lift a subaru, everyone is awd...where i work on a AAA call or any other call if its subaru its flatbed...
BluJay 12-24-2001 12:38 AM

Joelk,

I'd like a copy of that file please in original Illustrator format, for use here in NYC, home of the meanest tow trucks around.

I know what kind of plastic you're talking about, and I think I might know a place that could do something like that. I'll look into it.

Joelk 12-24-2001 12:43 AM

ok, I've had a couple requests for the illustrator file. Let me clean it up a bit so it's more print ready. Also, right now it is in Illustrator 9, I can convert it to 8 if you need.

I'll post a link so you guys can download it.
DoctorNick 12-24-2001 01:02 AM

talk to v6scoobie...they print lots of graphics....
Joelk 12-24-2001 01:06 AM

Illustrator 8 - http://www.jacera.com/i-club/warning_sticker-8.ai

Illustrator 9 - http://www.jacera.com/i-club/warning_sticker-9.ai

I'll update those files as I make improvements...
subyguy2 12-24-2001 01:17 AM

Yea, I would love to have something like that as long as the sticker is the type you put on the inside of the glass.:D

Great idea Keep us informed
AZ-GT 12-24-2001 09:58 PM

Great idea - I'd like to see these made up.
Peaty 12-25-2001 10:38 AM

I like it. I think I'd just stick one on my front skid plate though so if the tow truck driver gets under there he'd see it. Keep us informed.

Evaider 12-26-2001 03:58 PM

Good idea thanks for the file. Tow truck drivers are dumb especially if they are called by the PD. And especially if they are towing a lot of cars they have tow fests here people aernt allowed to park on certain streets when the street sweeper goes by so they tow like 20 - 30 cars on those days!

And I would think that they are liable expecially if you have a sticker. If they are a professional licensed insured towing company they should know not to tow AWD on 2 wheels. A friend had a tow truck rip off half his bumper once and they paid for the bumper. Thats why they are insured too so its not going to be the tow company thats going to pay for it it will be their insurance company.
dcoty 12-27-2001 10:43 AM

Ill take one, I have a lot of unpaid parking tickets, and I think they might tow me next time, or give me the boot.

Joelk 12-27-2001 11:00 AM

Ok, looks like there is a bit of interest out there.

I am going to change the file a bit so there are only three colors. (black, orange and white). I'll make the red X orange instead. That should make printing a bit cheaper.

When I get back to work next week I run some test prints and see how it looks on paper. I can probably ask some of my coworkers about vinyl printing too.

But, right now I'm off to help my friend trade in his volkswagon for a subaru, should be fun.
BYBYV8 12-27-2001 01:07 PM

Great idea! I have an inside line on printing these puppies up on a vinyl static cling sticker. I should have pricing on this later today. If there is enough interest I can buy in bulk and then pass the savings along to everyone. How does that sound?
gWaRbXe 12-27-2001 01:39 PM

Yes

Very Interested.. I would gladly pay for it!
BYBYV8 12-27-2001 04:24 PM

Okay, here is the scoop. For a very nice 3X5, three color vinyl static cling sticker, the cost will be 12.00 for a set of two (one for the front and one for the back) including USPS shipping. I for one think that this is a great idea. I'm sure they can be done cheaper but this being printed on a quality stock that will last for years. Cheaper stock will fade from the UV rays since it's gonna be on your windshield. IF there is enough interest, I will do this. I need for at least 25 people to join in on this and pay the 12.00 in advance to have them printed.
Joelk 12-27-2001 04:57 PM

BYBYV8, sounds good. I'll buy one set for sure, maybe two. Thanks for getting that info.

I would like to clean up the file a bit, make it look a bit more profesional, I can do it this weekend. I will upload the new files and post a message when I'm done.

So, last chance for any suggestions or changes.
WRXnFX 12-27-2001 09:23 PM

When and where would you like the money sent?
BYBYV8 12-28-2001 10:27 AM

Thanks JoelK, I would only suggest changing the orange to red vs. red to orange. Red seems to stand out more anyway. Would it be best for me to go to the admin on the site and set up a GP on these? Again, I need at least 25 people to do this before I can get these made.
brickdawg 12-28-2001 12:05 PM

That would be trick if the car in the sticker was a WRX.
Joelk 12-28-2001 02:06 PM

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Maybe we need to take a vote and see what car everyone wants on the decal.

WRX Sedan
WRX Wagon
2.5RS Sedan
2.5RS Coupe
OBS / plain-ol' Wagon

what I will need is a scan of a side-view illustration of your car from your owner's manual, or a very good side view photograph.

This first run, I think they all have to be the same, but if there's enough interest I'm sure some different ones can be made.

I'll see what looks best on the decal, I was thinking orange because that seems to be common on most warning stickers.

I will try to have the illustrator file finalized by sunday, and I'll post a new GIF. Once everything is pretty much final, then we probably should set up a group buy.
WRX USA 12-28-2001 02:28 PM

I would be in for a set. Now for the voting, I think the red would look better than the orange (better attention getter/seems more serious). I think the car in the picture should be a WRX sedan (but then again I'm a bit biased). I'm sure there would be a lot of interest in this if it where 'sticky' or in the Vendor-GB Section.

you can be imaginative with the graphics...

screwed up the last post but here are my changes that I would see done to it and then I might actually get some
dub976 12-28-2001 05:29 PM

that sticker is key. I had to talk a tow truck guy out of towing my car when it was parked on the street late at night or should I say early in the morning. I cought him with it the front end up in the air. When I asked him what he was doing and why. he said that they tow all front wheel cars this way. I then had the joy of informing him that it's an all wheel drive car. so he felt really dumb once I pointed out the awd sticker. So he put the car back down and went to get a flatbed. lucky for me I had gotten out of my friends wrx so he didn't know that the car was mine  so I got out of a $125 tow.

just in case you couldn't tell I would like a sticker also.:D

I think this is a great idea. Wanted to know what you guys thought about a smaller sticker say 2x3 or 1x2 (grafix only) so that you can put it on the driver side window where the towing guys will slim jim your lock.
slowme 12-28-2001 05:46 PM

Hell Yeah...I want one for sure. I might have a guy up here who may be able to make them? I'll check.

Bill
Samirr76 12-28-2001 06:00 PM

I just printed out a color copy, I'll tpae it to the inside of my back window. If it wears out i'll print out another :p
byl-23 12-28-2001 06:01 PM

This is a great idea. I am interested.

If it is not too hard to do, having a set that is smaller to put on the side windows and in the windshield would be nice.

Either way, I will get them. Let me know when you are ready for the payment.
BYBYV8 12-28-2001 10:23 PM

Guys and gals, several of you are mentioning different cars and sizes of the sticker, etc. First of all, let's be serious here... The type of car in the sticker is of no consequence. We simply want to avoid having our cars towed improperly. Let's get this put together ASAP and get them sent out.

Now on the size issue, they will probably cost a little less if we go smaller. If everyone thinks a 2X3 sticker is large enough we can do that. I'd rather go a little larger so it's noticed more quickly and easily.

JoelK, let me know when you are ready and I will get the ball rolling.
HIHO 12-28-2001 11:57 PM

I have a Legacy and would buy one too.:D
topcover 12-29-2001 01:44 AM

Car doesn't matter to me. I'm pretty sure the grungey tow guy's gonna say, "Hey, that's strange a picture of a GC8 on a WRX... hmm... I guess this sticker doesn't apply. Hey Bob! Just lift the front!"

My vote is for small. The 3x5 is damn near the same size as our i-club sticker!
byl-23 12-29-2001 02:07 AM

Hey Stan, Stop posting before me!

I vote smaller but will go with bigger.

The car is perfect in the last version. Maybe if it is the wrong car in the picture they will get confused and move on to tow the next car.:p

bigaloco 12-30-2001 02:46 PM

From www.subaru.com:

Just an FYI:

While surfing, I came across the following from the FAQ section at http://www.subaru.com:

"Can I tow a Subaru behind my motorhome?

AWD Subaru vehicles with manual transmission can be towed with all fours wheels on the ground and the transmission in neutral. AWD Subaru vehicles with automatic transmission can only be towed with all four wheels OFF of the ground. Therefore, if you are interested in towing a Subaru behind your motorhome, we would suggest purchasing a manual transmission Subaru. "

So, it seems those of us with MANUANL trannys are O.K.

bigaloco,

This sticker is for the tow truck driver to see so he doesn't tow our cars wrong. They don't tow them with all fours on the ground. If one end is lifted and the other is down it will cause severe damage to the car even in neutral.

Thanks for the info though :)

Files are updated and ready to go. I changed it to red, looks pretty good actually. I cleaned up the Impreza a bit, but it's still a plain-ol' sedan.

You can download the files using the links I posted previously.

For size, I want it 5 inches wide, much smaller than that and I don't think you can really see or read it very well.

The whole point of the static vinyl is so you can take it off when you don't want it to detract from the appearance of your car.

SoLo OnE 12-31-2001 10:40 AM

I'd like one too. I'm not only worried about some moron towing my car with only the front wheels off the ground, but also towing it with the parking brake ON!!

Okay everyone! It's done, the Group Buy is set up and ready to go! All the people that have already commited please go here and sign up!

These are not the pics form the group buy. I am not affiliated witht eh GB. I just grabbed the file and played with it. I have some clear sticker sheets and thought I would give it a try. If anyone is curious as to how I did it or wants info on it let me know via e-mail. :)

BTW, thse are not static cling. They are hard surface sticker sheets printed off my hp 960. ;)

wrx182 12-31-2001 03:57 PM

i'll be in on this...in either size....and, from the looks of the pick above, i'd say we'd need a solid background to really be able to see it well.
bigaloco 12-31-2001 04:16 PM

Thanks byl-23

Bill, thanks for setting my straight!

Towing the car and pulling the car behind a motorhome are indeed two completely different things!

What was I thinking?

I should probably get one of these stickers too.

Flatbeds for AWD!

slowme 12-31-2001 05:22 PM

I like the sticker alot though, wouldn't the sticker be easier seen if it was on a white background? By the way ChosenWon where did you get the material to print on and what is it?

thanks,

Bill
Joelk 12-31-2001 05:30 PM

The static vinyl sticker will be three colors; black, red and a white background. At least that's how I understand it. BYBYV8, correct me if I'm wrong...
Joelk 12-31-2001 06:14 PM

here's a high-res jpeg for anyone interested...

http://www.jacera.com/i-club/warning_sticker.jpg (1mb)
ChosenWon 12-31-2001 06:15 PM

I got the material from Staples. :) BTW, you can buy static cling sheets for inkjets at wal mart of all places. You have to look in the school supplies isle of all places.... I thought I had some but I don't right now.

And I concur on thebackground. I think some kind of background is nessary. That or have the whole thing done, (letters included) done in vinyl.... but then again, if you put something like that on the glass you risk scraping it off with the rest of the ice in the winter time......
slowme 12-31-2001 08:34 PM

I wonder if a place that can make stickers like that could maybe put the stickey side up? Know what I mean...instead of putting it on the outside stick it on the inside of the window?

Bill
Joelk 12-31-2001 08:39 PM

yeah, the point of the clear vinyl is so it can be reverse printed and you can stick it on the inside of your window and read it from the outside.
ChosenWon 12-31-2001 09:41 PM

That is exactly what I did. The pics on the other page are with the sicker printed in reverse/mirror image, and then the sticky side goes to the inside of the window. Myabe later I will atempt to put a background on it and re-print and apply on the car.
slowme 01-01-2002 10:21 PM

What program you using....Adobe?
ChosenWon 01-02-2002 12:29 AM

That is what I eventually used. I tried to use Illustrator, but I am nowhere near as fluent in it as I am PS 6.0. I had to do some converting and tinkering to get it the right size, and mirror imaged, but it worked out well. I still havn't gotten around to putting a background on yet though, I think it needs it to be effective at all......just my opinion though.....
ChosenWon 01-02-2002 01:19 AM

Ok, I put a yellow background on it everywhere it is transparent and printed it on the transparent adhesive sheets. It is unfortunatly too dark, and WAY to cold to put it on and get pics right now. Despite it being red and yellow, I still do not have high hopes for it, I think it may still be a bit hard to see. We will see tomorrow though.

I may end up doing as a person previously posted. Printing it on white paper and sticking it to the inside window. I have sheets of adhesive, so the edges will look nice, but still.......

I know that there is a printing process that can put the image on the sticky side of white adhesive paper, but I am not familiar with it, and not familar with the cost involved. I will try the cheap ways first. :)
ScoobyBoy 01-02-2002 03:54 AM

hahaha
kick ass idea!!!
i like the clear sticker one.
gonna slap one on my car as soon as i get one (the car:p ) which i hope will be very soon!
