Bridgestone 01R... STxx worthy? part 2

j-rho 04-24-2006 05:18 PM

Luke, what Phil meant was every size other than the 225/45-17 P-Zero Corsa has a 60 treadwear rating, not that every other P-Zero made was 60.

So, how'd the testing go?? ;)
Butt Dyno 04-24-2006 05:21 PM

P-Zero Corsa = 60 (and it is marketed as a DOT Legal R-Compound tire)
I think that's what Phil means :)

edit: beaten to it

sure you wouldn't rather talk about the corsa?

[[emailprotected]]LOL

I think you neeed to look at the facts

P-Zero system = 140
P-zero Asymetrico = 140
P-Zero Directionale = 140
P-Zero Rosso = 220
P-Zero Nero = 220
P-Zero Nero M&S = 400

P-Zero Corsa = 60 (and it is marketed as a DOT Legal R-Compound tire)
This post reminds me of search results before Google introduced relevancy ratings.

;)
PhilC 04-24-2006 10:21 PM

Sorry Luke, I thought it was clear that we were talking about the P-Zero Corsa since that's the only member of the Pirelli family that was ever even in the ballpark on solo competition. It was the 215/45-17 Corsa that was a 140 and yes I'm aware that was the only size molded in the thicker tread depth (8/32nds instead of 6/32nds according to TireRack). So it probably actually did have more tread-wear than the rest of the Corsas. Kind of the point isn't it??? If you want a ringer mold an R-Compound in a thicker tread and stick a 140 tread-wear on it, national competitors are going to shave it anyways. The biggest problem with the Corsa was that only that one single size was in theory ST* legal which is basically the polar opposite of the rules for even stock class on common availability.

Since you ask Jason when you preface your comments with: "As a member of the Street Touring Advisory Committee" you can't IMO then go un-official by saying: "personal and non-official".

Edit: and back on topic for a bit it would be great to see TireRack test performance tires on something other than a BMW 3 series. I'd love to see what change you'd get in the results with different size tires on different cars, maybe even on the same car since we know that tire size makes a huge difference in the performance of the tire.

where we at with this? how did the tirerack testing go and any reports from the Atwater NT?

thanks
Doug

I called TireRack early this week and they stated that the on-track testing was rained out the past two weeks and should happen this week sometime.

The only person I saw on these tires in Atwater was Jason Rhoades who finished 3rd in STS. He was 1st at the San Diego Tour. Perhaps he would like to chime in here with his impressions.
[emailprotected] 05-03-2006 04:32 PM

it got rainy and cold so, we couldn't test them last week .... today we are testing some R-Compound tires ..... hopefully we will get back on schedule next week although I won't be here (having a baby on Friday)
whitet777 05-03-2006 09:02 PM

I tested them in the rain last weekend in Milwaukee. They were excellent rain tires at full tread depth. I took 2nd in STU and 1st place in STU took FTD on the the RE-01R's.

Congrats Luke!!
makofoto 05-04-2006 06:16 PM

our initial test also shows that they might be an excellant rain tire, in 245/40/17 on an STI ... more info at the end of Sept. :-)

Thats because he sandbagged so the tire wouldn't go on the exclusion list.

I'll never understand why a treadwear rating would determine if a tire is excluded or not. Each manufacturer assigns it's own treadwear rating on it's own tires. Supposedly it subjective against all other tire within that manufacturers model line up. Basically a treadwear of 120 in Bridgestone can't be compared with a treadwear of 120 in Michelin or Falken, etc.

On another note, I have the new RE-01R and our first Autocross is this weekend. I'll post my feedback on this tire Monday. My intial inpressions(after yesterday's testing session) are they are very quick to comeup to temp and hold the temp for a while. They are very responsive and seem to have alot of potential. I'll post more later.

STU tire choice might get interesting. Would have to be alot better to spend that $$ on over RT-615

I don't think that's true. Treadwear ratings are measured in a standardized way. This is from an official government document (http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/EPA-IMPACT/2005/April/Day-21/i7971.htm): "Appendix A of 49 CFR 575.104 specifies the treadwear test course and driving procedures for convoys evaluating candidate tire treadwear performance. The test course consists of three loops totaling 400 miles in the geographical vicinity of Goodfellow Air Force Base near San Angelo, Texas."

The full test procedures are specified in this document:

Yes, the only place where treadwear can get shady is that the tire companies have to extrapolate the data from the test and project the total wear of the tire. There is opportunity for a little fudge room based on how the company interprets the data, but there is a common control tire with a treadwear of 100 that they are benchmarked against in the test.
DougM 05-09-2006 10:37 PM

out with the old (neova)... in with the new

makofoto 05-09-2006 10:52 PM

Boxerwagon ... so what were YOUR conclusion's after last weekends AX ?

btw. Tire Wear ratings can change. The Toyo RA-1 use to be a 40 (?) wear tire and was then changed to a 100. I was at Westside Alignment when a fellow showed me his new track tires. Two were embossed 40 and two 100. When he got the "mismatched" tires he immediately called Toyo ... and they told him there was absolutely no difference, but since they found that the tires were wearing so well, they needed to have the Tire Wear rating up-graded.
Jsortor 05-09-2006 11:23 PM

As with every tire, it needs to win some national events to truly be recognized....

...And hey, gotta luv that Bridgestone contingency!

I used to be contracted with Bridgestone in my GP Bike days. Different group (dealing with bike tires) but they were really good to deal with. Real excited to help back then...

I'm not in the know but I sense sarcasm(?)
abaxter34 05-09-2006 11:39 PM

Doug, what size 01r's did you buy?
DougM 05-09-2006 11:41 PM

giant ones :)

they are 245/45/17
the Neova (pictured) was the 245/40
Tasha and I blistered the Neovas at Saturday's BEAC practice... huge chunks of missing tread...
DougM 05-09-2006 11:43 PM

oh, and they are an inch taller (than a full tread Neova) and just a hair narrower, maybe a 1/4" narrower
D fresh 05-09-2006 11:59 PM

Just ordered some RE-01Rs. 235/40 17s on 17X8s. Should be here Thursday morning.
AndrewSS 05-10-2006 02:19 AM

so, what are some impressions of these tires at an autox? Boxerwagon, did you drive them yet? I wonder how they compare to the yoko
What about the second one?

225/50R16 Bridgestone Potenza RE-01R

It might be good, unknown at this time though. 140 rating should make it pretty grippy. Considering that the re070 is a good tire, I think this one might have potential.

-Paul
I'm convinced that the tread rating means absolutely nothing at the performance tire level. I'm sure that the tire makers rate them whatever they need to in order to classify them as a specific type of tire.

For example, the new RE-01R is a 140 rating. I believe the Neova is also a 140 rating. Did you know the stock RE92's also have a 140 rating? They flat-out suck in comparison.

Actually its 160 per Tire Rack. ;)

Got 'em on, driven, re-torqued, and driven hard. So far they feel pretty good. A good length leisurely drive around and then checked 'em out on my local "spidpad." I think they'll do quite well, they seem to be pretty damn sticky. We'll see how they perform at the AutoX Saturday. :D
