how to get folding rear seats for your GC8

hey all,
just found a way to get rear folding seats in my '01 RS sports coupe. went to a junk yard and got some folding seats from a legacy wagon, pulled off the cloth of the back seat portion and installed them in my RS. so far, haven't had to do any drilling of holes (holes for the brackets/hinges are already there, but some are covered by black tape circles), although for now i have only rigged up some wire to hold the seats until i get some lock/release system set up for holding the seats as the seats don't sit all the way back yet as is for the brackets the seats lock on to grab hold. not sure if i'll replace the foam rubber yet before redoing the cloth to match my interior. the other cool thing is the bottom part of the seat fits/folds up/locks just fine, although i had to push down a little hard to get the latch to lock into place. since the back seats area are a little smaller, thinking of putting in some arm rests of some sort that fold up and down, and need some headrests since the seats are also shorter than the stock seats. the hardest part will be getting stock cloth for the folding seats for a fair price, so maybe if enough people are interested we can set up some group buy of the cloth to bring down the cost. i will try to take some pictures and add more details on how to do this the rest of the way soon. if anyone knows how to get the cloth cheap, or wants to start a group buy, let me know. other than finishing the project off, i pretty much now how a good way to carry big/long things w/o removing my rear seats, etc., and hopefully once i get more cloth to match and have finished arm/headrests, it will look like the car came that way. email me w/ ?s at [emailprotected].

for those of you who are interested in converting your seats, post here, maybe we can do a group buy for the cloth to bring the cost down.

You know that the real GC8's have 60/40 split rear seats. Just need to get a part number from one of the owners overseas and order it. I'll be looking for some while I'm over there. ;)

well, how much do the seats cost from overseas not to mention shipping? i was looking for something cheap/easy and they are 60/40 split seats, so just need cloth to match my interior for a decent price, and will probably add some armrests and headrests. if you can find a way to get the cloth cheap, let me know. thnx.

Rear seats are very light, so I doubt it would cost a whole lot.

cloth syle?

the thing is, wouldn't the cloth from overseas be a different sytle/pattern? i have the black cloth w/ a "carbon fiber" checkered pattern. need to match that/be extremely similar. do the overseas versions have headrests/armrests or fit similar to our stock seats? as to cost, just to see, called dealer near here and got prices into several hundred (frames like $260., cloth for R side $416 & L side $228, padding R side $81 & L side $53). i would also think shipping here from overseas would either cost a lot or take forever to get. would be nice to do a group buy or find someplace that would sell the cloth for a good price. the only other thing is i would need the cloth to be either sewn already if it's a match for the seats AND the interior or unsewn and match interior. any ideas? let us know if you get any part #s/prices? thnx.

I'll see what I can do. It may be easier and faster if you asked one of the members on here that have (real) GC8's. I asked one guy from Russia, but he couldn't find it. I'm not sure if the wagon seats would fit. I'm pretty sure the cloth won't match. That's no biggie for me since I'm redoing it all any ways.

k, all, still working on my rear seats now that i have some time again. took a few pics in progress. check them out at http://homepage.mac.com/kstiggger/PhotoAlbum5.html. in progress of making the frame fit the rest of the way (chopping off corners). thinking of using original stock cloth, unless someone has another set cheap (if anyone has rear seats for 01 RS sports coupe checkered/cf pattern black cloth, email me), and either bolting the 2 sections together and using stock bench foam/cloth or getting more stock cloth to go around each section. any ideas, email me. willl take more pics soon.

They are oversized though ;). Sending my rear seats out of work with Airborne was going to cost about $130. Just the fabric was a shade over $15 IIRC :).

Can I ask why you just don't find a US Impreza with folding seats and swap them out? Wait, you say we never got folding rear seats in the U.S. Impreza? Wrong.
1993-1994 Impreza LS, possibly even carried into some 1995 models - A rareity...but they came with the rear folding seat...no modification...except seat fabric necessary. Plus all the parts can be ordered from your friendly Subaru dealer.

well, in my case leaving the rear seats unbolted isn't an option, since i use them to carry things, and at times seatbelt things in, and it wouldn't be good if you were carrying something expensive or fragile, etc and the seats moved. luckily, i'll be done with this project soon.
