Can we get a "fix those rattles" thread going? part 12

onesixnin 06-02-2011 02:38 AM
My "new" 02 WRX wagon is pretty rattle-free, but I had one annoying high pitched buzzing sound that I couldn't quite pinpoint. I read through this entire thread looking for someone with the same sound but no luck.........
EDIT 2: Finally found the source of the noise. The front bolt of the oh sh** handle mount was MIA.
I almost thought I found my solution... :sadbanana:
My noise is more a harmonic squeal coming from the driver side mirror...If I fold it in...nothing...extend it back and high pitch squeal anything over a few mph..

I'm hearing some kind of rattle from the outside of the car when I drive slow with the window down. It sounds like something is tapping the ground but I looked underneath and nothing is hanging down. Sounds like a metal clanking sound. Anyone else have this?

A metal clank from under your car is not an interior rattle. It is likely something from your suspension, or possibly an exhaust hanger, or something else. If you have ramps, get under the car and start banging on stuff to see what moves and what makes noise. First place I would check would be end links (esp. if you have an aftermarket sway bar). Sometimes end links move and clank even if they feel tight, so slap a wrench on those nuts and tighten them down anyway, even if you think they're okay.

I've seen several posts here eluding to a particularly obnoxious rattle that seems to come from between the dash and windshield. I've fixed about 5 or 6 other rattles in my car, but this dash/windshield rattle has been driving me bat s*** crazy for months!

If I can't fix it, I think I should probably look into forming a support group!

Yes I have this as well and haven't been able to locate or fix it either. I hate it, but it's very tough to find exactly what's rattling without taking the entire dash apart.
Rufus 08-05-2011 10:11 AM

I think I'm going to pop out the radio this weekend and root around a little. I don't think I want to go so far as to remove the dash...

If I find anything, I will make sure to share with the class.

my car has a strange rattle at IDLE after long drives with the clutch un-pressed all the way. If I put the clutch pedal to the floor it stops.

at first start up, or after a drive if im easy on it this wont happen..

seems to be more when i get to/home from work after ~30mi highway drive or after i have been WOT during a drive..

any ideas?

I have the worst rattle. :/
My 2002 Wrx has this rattle coming from what sounds and feels to be under my car towards the front almost by the passenger side but more towards in between of the passenger and driver side.

almost sounds like a loose heat shield.
all im almost positive is that its two metals causing the rattle.

i could be at a stop and i hear the rattle, and i hear it more when i accelerate...
sometimes when i shut off my car i can hear it thud? when the car shuts off.

i dont know if anyone has had this problem...
but all ive recently noticed is i found a torn boot from my passenger steering rack.

help anyone?
or suggestions?

thank you...

Anybody have a rattle in their driver's seatbelt mount, the one near your ear that you can adjust by sliding up and down? When my exhaust hits certain frequencies it rattles and I can't figure out what exactly is rattling.

Hello all, I purchased a 2011 WRX Limited sedan a few weeks ago, and traded in a 2010 Camry, so needless to say, I was disappointed in the sound inside the car... especially after adding a JL Audio subwoofer in the trunk!

I bought a bulk pak of Dynamat to try to remedy the rattling and had my installer line the rear deck and all 4 doors, the car is MUCH quieter, unfortunately that has just made the rear deck rattle/buzz that much louder to hear!! I also lined the back of the plastic rear deck cover with 1/4" foam insulation where it touches the glass to no avail.

After more investigating we found that the source of the buzz/rattle is the center seat belt tensioner which when removed and shaken, you can replicate the sound.

Has anyone fixed this problem, short of replacing the part? Will the dealer give me a hard time if I bring it there, or even do anything to start with?

I could just remove the piece all together as I would never subject my worse enemy to sit in the center of the rear seat anyway, but I dont think I should HAVE to do that to alleviate a rattle that should not be there.

Thanks all!

hi, im new to this website. was informed about it by a good friend. so i have a few rattles. But the only one i cant stand is in the rear. i inspected my rear struts but they seem fine. from inside the car it sounds like its the strut mounts or top hats whatever you guys are calling them. i want to order the replacements but im not sure if it will fix my problems any suggestions? i drive a 04 sti sedan. havent had more than a month. oh and randomly yesterday my radio just stop putting sound out. idk why or what happen. was working fine up untill yesterday. pulled radio and inspected and found no loose connections. i guess i need to removed the door panels and look at the actual speakers. well any help would be great. thanks

Hi everyone, I drive a 2004 WRB STI
I have a very strange noise coming from either side of the dash while I go over bumps. Either abrupt or sharper bumps I'll get the noise in varying intensity.

The sounds according to my friend who works at a body shop sounds like sheet metal friction noise, but to me it sounds like plastic creaking. When going over larger bumps the sound is very loud like some plastic or metal is crunching. The sound is not muffled and it seems to be coming exclusively from the inside right under both sides of the dash near the oval defroster vent (no it's not that problem).

Here's what I've done to try and eliminate the program but nothing has solved it:

- remove the lower portions of the dash (glove box, trim under the steering wheel.) and try to retighten the glovebox. Driving with the glove box remove did not make a difference

- retightened the bolts that bolt the metal crossbar that run from left to right under the dashboard.

- inspect the HVAC vent tubes.

- take off the VIN plate and drive car around without it.

-I don't know if this was a coincidence or not but I only heard the sound after my AC was overfilled causing the condenser clutch to slip and cause a knocking sound against the firewall. That knocking was fixed by correctly recharging the AC Again.

- the mechanic who did the AC recharge has taken my car to look at right now to try and diagnose the problem. I have yet to get the car back but he told me that he's basically taken as much of the dash out as legally possible for him to drive it around to test for the noise.

- he suspects the stiffer suspension components have caused other adhesive bonded body panels to give. Personally, I have not found a thread talking about this on NASIOC or iwsti. It maybe the fender braces that's too weak??

My current suspension setup:
RCE TArmac 2s with GTworx camber plates
RCE swaybars 25mm front and back
kartboy endlinks
whiteline ALK
front strut tower bar.

Group N engine and Tranny Mounts.

I'm sure these are pretty common suspension mods for the community, and yet I've not been able to find anything about this weird noise! it's driving me nuts! I can't just "turn the stereo louder" cause it's loud enough to hear over the stereo.

please help!

2011 solutions
Thought I would share my solutions to the rattles that came with my 2011 WRX sedan.

Door panels (esp. front passenger door): had Dynamat installed professionally in all four doors, which involved removing the foam that was probably causing most of the rattle in the first place. Roughly $300, but very worth it.

Rear deck/windshield: Did the 'stuff the shirt trick' from inside the trunk at first, which worked pretty well until I installed a pair of subs. I then noticed most of the rattling was coming from the child lock covers. I used double-sided tape both where the covers contact the rear deck, and on the latches so that they are wedged shut (don't ever plan on using them). Intended as a temporary fix, but seems to be holding up well after a few months.

--My best solution so far though that I haven't yet read about (the above solutions can be found on other threads), is using 1/2" backing rod and tucking it between the rear windshield and the plastic deck. You can find the backing rod at the hardware store with the weather stripping stuff. It tucked in perfectly with a plastic squeegee. And the color even matches well, although barely visible. Best $3.50 I've spent so far on this car.
Rufus 08-30-2011 08:48 AM

Hello to all!

Well ive been having this rattling sound mainly over bumps sometimes i notice it when im not even accelerating at all...even at times it seem when i turn off my car at the shut off i get a thud thud....but more like a rattle.
Its not consistent sometimes and at times i couldn't even get others to hear it. But i took some video of the noise while i was driving the other night.
If anyone could help i would greatly appreciate it.

I do go over lots of bumps to get the noise out...and sorry i use my blinkers and get red lights alot!I realize the video is like 5 min but u can hear the noise right away no need to watch the whole video...

Rexdriver99 08-30-2011 07:03 PM

For the rear view mirror you can take down the mirror and put a piece of cloth between the little nob and the pinch area on the windshield. Don't know the exact words to describe it.

Mine did it for a few weeks and I finally got rid of it.

All you have to do is take off the B-pillar and shave off the the top horizontal plastic "line". There should be 3 of these horizontal parts. People say to use a dremel but a razon blade is so easy. I was done in 10 minutes with the entire process including the other side.

I would post pics, but I didn't take any during the process, and I don't think any 'after' pictures would show much of anything.
-- I forgot to mention I have a 2 layers of Dynamat in the trunk, one on the underside of the plastic deck, and another covering the metal from the inside of the trunk, but the effect was minimal; almost not worth it.

I've owned an '09 Impreza and now a '11 Impreza and have had the same rattle on both cars, which has been driving me crazy! I thought it was coming from the steering column, but finally figured out it is actually the brake pedal. If I put pressure with my foot on the side of the pedal, the rattling stops. Anyone else have this, and know how to fix it?
Green Mtn WRX 09-19-2011 11:01 PM

Rear seat latch rattle
I have been experiencing a rattle in the back of my '11 wagon for the past couple of weeks. It came and went, but was getting worse. Last week I finally spent some time rooting around for it. I found that the drivers side rear seat would move back and forth slightly when it was latched, and it caused a creaking rattle when going over uneven terrain at low speeds. When the seat was folded down, everything was fine.

The hasp on the quarter panel simply needed to be moved back, or the latch on the seat moved forward, so that more pressure is exerted on the seat to keep it firmly in place. However, the trim on both items covered the adjusting screws, and resisted my first attempts to remove it. So I dropped it at the dealer for the afternoon. They fixed it and told me that they have seen quite a few of the '11's come back for this adjustment after a couple of thousand miles. They feel that the factory didn't tighten these bolts enough.

It was a quick fix, and one that I could likely do myself, but I always seem to end up breaking the little plastic retainer clips for interior trim. The dealer was happy to make it right.
Bighec 09-20-2011 12:48 AM

I've got that same rattle. Gonna have to drop it off to get it fixed.
BuggedWrx 09-20-2011 04:17 AM

Yours and everyone elses. If you push the cover and the back of the mirror together (put your hand in the shape of a U with thumb and fingers) it goes away until the next bump in the road. I guess a solution is to take it apart and maybe use double sided tape or some kind of silicone sealant to hold the two together better. It doesn't bother me much any more. The rest of the rattles kind of drown it out

Wanted to throw in my 2 cents on some rattles I located on my 06 WRX Limited sedan.

Heard a rattle coming from front left driver's side of the car, it was a very, hollow, constant rattle that was worst at about 25-35mph, and going over any unevenness in the road. Tightened every bolt, heat shield I could find. Ended up being a missing nut on the windshield washer reservoir located right behind and above the driver's side fog light. It rattles against the engine bay in front of where the battery rests. Replaced nut, and now one rattle down.

One still persists. It sounds like (again) another hollow rattle, same speeds, braking, clutching have no effect. Won't do it when car is still. I can feel a vibration in my dead pedal when it happens. Any ideas on this one? Its VERY loud and really only becomes tolerable at highway speed when its muted by my exhaust.

That sounds like endlinks to me. Do you have spherical endlinks? Get under there and make sure everything is cranked down really tight.

This is a great thread. I have the VIN/defrost vent rattle and the right rear seat latch in my car, which i will be attacking with a vengeance this weekend.

Glovebox Rattle - Not Latch or Keyhole
2011 4-door STI with 4k miles - rattle coming from behind the glovebox that sounds like a pebble bouncing on a piece of tin; rattle only occurs when driving on smooth worn pavement. It turned out to be the ECU, which has a thin metal bracket holding a silver metal box. I wedged some weather strip between the ECU and the rear glovebox wall to solve the problem, also put some weather strip on the side of the ECU to deaden the tin can sound. The ECU is directly behind the yellow sticker, behind the back left glovebox wall. To confirm this is the source of the rattle, have a passenger reach through the square holes in the glovebox wall and press left/right on the ECU while you are driving down a bad road. To apply the weather strip, remove the glovebox door so it is easier to reach through the square holes. Note: this is the same 1" wide black foam rubber weather strip you buy at a hardware store to seal your house front door, it has tape adhesive on one side so it stays where you put it, and you can stack pieces for a thicker shim.

In my 09 WRX i am having many many rattles. This saturday im taking off the dash, all four doors, rear plastic dash under rearview mirror, and trunk lining. Installing 1/4" thick closed cell foam.

My biggest noises are:

Right above the radio the flat section in front of the clock and MPG. ANNOYING. If i put pressure downward on it, goes away.

When starting off from a stop, somewhere by the glove box, dunno where is so loud and annoying - no solution as of yet.

For anyone who experiences a buzzing noise when hitting 75mph+ try and bend your wiper arms down a little bit more from the middle. Kind of like the top gear episode when he is in the Ferrari. It is the air rushing underneath the rubber causing the buzzing sound. my 2cents.

Yes i work around them all the time on many different cars.It is actually a curtain that deploys down over the window. That nameplate is only a cover for screw. There should be only a clip after that, if i remember correctly. You just pull out on the panel.
.kyle 11-14-2011 09:44 PM

remove the little cover where it says SRS, there is a screw/bolt behind it. remove said screw. pull evenly outward to unseat the push clips and then away from the dash to unseat where teh two meet eachother at the base.
.kyle 11-14-2011 09:46 PM

also, it is absolutely safe. you are not touching anything electrical or the charge unit. you are safe to take the trim panel off.

^you can find that same type of foam with adhesive applied to one side and affix it permanently to kill the rattle. it would be a shame if the door panel ever came off for service and the rattle returned because the foam just fell to the ground and the tech neglected to put it back.

I took my car to the dealer for the baffle rattle in the door.... they fixed nothing! So... I ordered 50 sq ft of sound deadening material... 24 lbs... she's gonna be quiet and hopefully rattle free after this!

Be lead footed and boost. Covers up rattles

Squeaking from the right front passenger trim piece on the dash. That little dark silver/grey trim piece. When it's cold, it squeaks and rubs against the rest of the dash, but when it's warm it's ok. My friend has a 2009 impreza, and another has a 2008 impreza, all with the same problem... Anyone seen a fix to this? Might be installing a boost gauge this winter, so the dash will have to come apart. Wondering if anyone has fixed this in the meantime?

I haven't read this whole thread yet, but when I am at a stop light with the brake pressed down, I heard a load rattling sound. However if I turn the steering wheel just a very tiny bit this rattling around goes away momentarily, but after a few seconds, the rattling starts over again. Anyone have a clue what it is? Thanks

2009 impreza Outback sport:

Rear seat rattle?
-Fold down your rear seats, and pop off the plastic fasteners that hold the seats fabric to the cars base. Once you remove the fabric, you can see there are plastic plates, and those are suspended very weakly and rattle like CRAZY!!

Trunk rattle?
-Spare tires shape doesn't lay flat to the spare tire compartment of the Subaru impreza Outback sport. So what I opted to do was cut a hole in a Tshirt to wrap around the spare tire screw hole mount. Then lay the T-shirt flat, and rest the spare tire. No more trunk rattles

After these 2 mods, almost 80% of my rattles are gone. I still have about 20% of rattles, but they are VERY quiet, and not enough to bug me.
