Can we get a "fix those rattles" thread going? part 19

nubsub 02-23-2016 05:13 PM

never got any from my 2012 Impreza 2.0i folks so i'll ask here:

any tips on trying to find a rattle that comes from the instrument cluster? any tips on removing the fascia without breaking things so i can find the cause and pad things to death?

i used to get rattles only when temp was below 45 oF outside (i live in CA), how its a bigger temp span of 50-75 oF, which means half of the time i hear it. i can get rid of it by applying solid pressure with my hand to the face of the instrument cluster (sort of dangerous to do this while driving...)

i have had not luck pushing folded paper between the fascia (black plastic frame) and the instrument cluster itself to try to duplicate my hands effort (probably my hand puts a lot more pressure on the face) so its unclear what my solution would be...but it seems getting that frame off and trying to see the sound goes way is the first thing to do...

I have a rattle coming from around the knee airbag area on my 2016 WRX. Anyone else have a rattle in the same area?

I seen to have won the Rattle Lottery on my '16 WRX. Driver knee bag, Navi/Multifunction display, Passenger door, both B pillars, Map lights and something between the center console and passenger seat.

Took my car to the dealer twice for the knee air bag, they put foam strips in there, didn't do *****. If I packed more foam in there or pull on it to create more pressure the rattle stops. I'm quite unhappy about not just 1 but several rattles..

Anyone resolved any of these rattles?
TurboTom107 02-24-2016 08:46 PM

I also seem to have a lot of rattles. The one I find most annoying is the plastic cover for the gauge cluster. Every bump just sounds like popping glass when it's cold out. The rear deck also rattles plenty. I'm waiting for it to warm up before I start playing with it to silence those rattles.
Just to let some people know, that were in the same situation i was(it wasnt the vent clips neither the a-pillar), that my rattle on the inside(it seemed to be) was in fact this:

https://youtu.be/JLZM_wYcm58
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

I've been chasing down this rattle for over a year and was all prepared to open up my dash for the umpteenth time to track it down. It sounded like a quarter rattling around inside the dash, just behind and to the left of the gauges.

A quick push/pull on the rear driver's side of the hood made a noise JUST like the video, and one bolt from the hinge bracket on the hood side was indeed a quarter-turn loose. I tightened all hinge bracket bolts just to be sure and... SILENCE! Actually, the silence is a bit eerie since I'd already taped/foamed/insulated a bunch of other potential rattles while looking for the actual source.

Someone should add this to the main post, as I do see this come up from time to time from others.

Engine Rattling sound
Hope you guys can help, I'm worried as heck.
I have a 2013 WRX STi that I've owned for only a week.
It has only 27 thousand km on it. has had aftermarket work done to it (exhaust, intake, downpipe, cobb stage 2 tuning)
My friend got all this work done and leased it the last 3 years. I decided to take over his lease. I haven't abused this car myself at all but the other day I let my friend drive it and he lets it rip, and while attempting to get to 4th gear, gets to 2nd for a split second, the meter redlines for a split second. Later that day I notice this rattling sound.....
This rattling sound occurs at 2000-3000rpm while lightly accelerating and when I take my foot off the pedal. It does not rattle with WOT or during idle. I'm so worried its a rod knock noise.... and because my friend had modded all this stuff I realize the warranty may be denied for this and in one week I've screwed this car. Any advice would help, or if anyone knows what this is?!
Thanks guys

Is there an easy way to sift through all 44 pages of this post to find out if fixing exhaust pipe heat shield rattle by way of removal is going to cause anything worse than a brush fire?
odingrey 04-13-2016 04:14 PM

Tracked a weird one down today. If you have the kicker upgrade package in the doors and you get rattles during heavy drum music at certain volumes, look into the speaker itself. Both my front speakers do it and only at certain volumes. Looking into replacing them now and probably going to send a message to Subaru about it.

-edit

Ok, replaced speakers, still making the noise... Still hunting...

Tried it out myself and it works, unsurprisingly. Didn't take it apart nearly as much as he did, just enough to get that button out. Took about 15 minutes from start to finish.

Dash rattles
Fixed most my instrument cowl and A pillar rattles by putting thin adhesive felt on the clips and where one trim piece meets another. Easy to cut into whatever shape is required to keep it hidden. still have a very annoying one that I haven't been able to find. thought it was from my head unit install, but I took it out and had someone drive while I was reaching around inside the dash. maybe the sound is coming out the defogger vent...

Dudes,

Getting some rattle from divers door jam- lower dash area? Any obvious culprits?
Garbels90 04-28-2016 10:44 PM

So i have a rattle that comes from underneath my manual 2007 Subaru when ever im taking of. Id say going in between 20-30 kph and shifting from first into second is when i hear it. Just a little but quick rattle and then its going. It doesn't happen when im driving in any other way either when im thrashing on it or on the highway driving 120+ kph.
Anyone else have a similar happening??
Rushofadrenalyn 04-29-2016 08:32 AM

Back end popping.
I have a weird popping sound that occurs going over bumps, seems to be something with suspension on the passenger rear. I have all new suspension bushings for the car and I now just need to pinpoint the one I need to replace first. I currently have Rear subframe tie down bolts , 29mm rear sway bar , groupN top hats. Any ideas?

It's probably your wires or the plastic moisture barrier vibrating against the door. Does it go away if you put pressure against the door?

See the pic above, Best solution is to put sound deadening on all the holes inside the door (metal part) or put some closed cell foam between the door card and door. I did both...ha

I deadened the doors, I don't think that's the issue. Get this...

It goes away when I unplug the speakers, but only the fronts. It comes right back when I plug them back in. Even if they are out and I'm holding them in my hands.

It makes the sound through the tweeter and the tweeter in the door speaker, but not the rear speakers despite them being the same speakers as the front doors. (Though I did swap the fronts to another brand... which still does it)

And it does it in music without any "rattle" noise if played on any other stereo.

It literally sounds like it's being pushed through the front speaker wire some how and the speakers play the rattle noise.

And it sounds like what you would expect a loose nut would sound like if it had a washer vibrating from bass... It also only ever comes on during drum heavy music.

It's driving me completely insane...
amiexploited 04-29-2016 09:10 PM

Dang, well it must be the tweeter area since you held the front in your hand. Do you have the harmon kardon?

What's wild is it will come from both the front speakers and tweeter. Stereo is the stock 6.2 with an Alpine power pack with the kicker speakers and tweeters original, now [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Infinity-Kappa-62-11I-6-5-Inch-Speakers/dp/B009GHQX5O?ie=UTF8&psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s01"]Infinity Kappa[/ame] front speakers and the kicker tweeters.

Sounds like somethings up. Post in the 2.5L tech forum. It sounds like rod knock to me, but due to when the damaged occurred your timing belt could've jumped a tooth, in which case you are likely jackhammering a valve in to a cylinder. I'd uh, be looking at my friend like, "bro, gimme money".

I have 3 rattles left...

rear decklid. fixed
shifter surround (not reverse lever). fixed. Loose wire under it. tape it down.

Sounds like one is coming from the guage cluster area near the tweater/a pillar area.
I put foam behind the cluster pressing on the dash.. still there

Rattle from somewhere on the hvac/nav area...
took it apart and still can't find it.

Still have a rattle coming from somwhere around the passenger left seat rail...

If any of you have a tapping rattle on the rear passenger door, it's the striker and door latch. I didn't pin point it to what exactly though, I just tapped the striker with a hammer to get the door to latch closer.
I have a 2015 STi that had the same problem with my passenger seat. I took the passenger seat out, and when you look at the rails, you'll see that it's missing a bolt. I think it's a defect from the factory.

Fortunately, I work at a shop, and I was able to find a small bolt that would fit through the little hole in the rail and nut to fasten the two metal pieces together so they don't rattle. You'll have to move the rail around until you can get the bolt and nut secure. It helps if you have small fingers and a lot of patience, because there's absolutely no room. You'll need a flashlight, small 8mm bolt and nut, a magnet, and another person to help you get the seat out without scratching any plastic pieces. Oh, also tools to remove the bolts holding the seat down. I think they're 12mm, but I could be mistaken.

I'm not on NASIOC that often, but PM me if you have any questions. I'll try to log on during my lunch breaks.

Nice find! Oddly enough i think that rattle went away. Maybe it settled after passengers put weight on it.

Still trying to find the navi hvac rattle. Put felt tape on the corners of the navi unit. Still have a slight rattle on bumps...almost there

I used to have a 05 STI with a rattle that came from near the A/C vent left driver side (near where the tweeters are on newer models).
The rattle was caused by the hvac hose that plugs into the A/C vent on that side. I removed the gauge cluster and put some left over dynamat on where the two connect, and that solved that. Maybe try that.

2015 wrx with nav here and I'm getting this odd mettalic sounding rattle from the center dash (maybe), its very low and I only hear it when the windows are up. Anyone else have this issue?
Gootz311 06-15-2016 11:33 AM

I know this rattle has been talked about before in here, but I'm too lazy to locate it.

My vin plate near the windshield started to make noise, then it spread to the entire plastic piece below the windshield where the defroster blows out (vin plate is attached to this piece).

So my first attempt involved cotton balls. I stuffed them into the holes where the plastic clips go into. It worked for about a month, then the rattles came back! So I ripped out the plastic trim piece again and decided to glue each of the plastic clips attached to it because I noticed they were very lose and thought that is probably the cause of the issue/rattle.

The glue takes 24 hours to cure, so I am going to install it tonight and see what the outcome is. Anyone else had this rattle before? I have a 2002 wrx btw.

So Sunroof rattle was fixed. Took it to the dealer and they said it was a common issue on the WRX and the Foresters as well. They adjusted it somehow and now no more rattle! YAY! Hey there!

I have a 2014 WRX and the window switches on both the drivers and passenger front doors rattle all to hell when the stereo is above 25. I took it to the dealer and they said they couldn't fix it, it was just something that happens, even with a new switch, which is funny because my 2010 never had an issue, and the loaner they gave me didn't have an issue.

Anybody have any ideas on how to fix this one. It's the actual toggles on the switches that are making the noise. If I lay my fingers on them like I'm going to roll up the windows they stop.
amiexploited 07-22-2016 10:54 AM

^^^ You probably have to take them apart carefully. Either add enough dielectric grease or stuff felt tape etc around the gaps
Squattro 07-22-2016 11:04 AM

From what I thought was a rattling front passenger door card and attaching foam to every possible contact point inside, is not actually the door card. I heard the rattle one morning and for the hell of it, I opened the glove box and left it opened and the sound went away! Going to take the glovebox apart and figure out what is making the sound this weekend.
Any chance this is the same for 2015 non sti models? I have a 6mt limited and my passenger seat rails rattle like hell.

I would assume gotta disconnect the battery and the sensors as well to remove the seat?
Ya I think he was responding to my original post. 15 limited here. Honestly I think mine went away. I don't take passengers too often but it seems to have gone away with more use of that seat.

It's smart to disconnect the battery and press the brake pedal a few times since you're dealing with airbag sensors.

2017. Map light rattle since week 1. Anyone got a fix?

Does anyone who has had the third brake light cover rattle fixed (dealership or yourself) have a photo where you applied foam and whatnot for the 15+ WRX?

I have now tried to fix the rattle three times with different foam placements and not been successful.
