Sand with a light grit sandpaper, lightly, then clean. That's all the prep I've done and it's come out great on the center console stuff.

IMHO I think you should paint the little ring around the HVAC controls too. not necessarily the knob itself but the one around that that is still silver. meh.
Looks nice though.

Ooo I want to see how this turns out. I'd like to get rid of all my tan interior, but I'm too poor to get a complete oem grey dash (and trim). I've painted other interior pieces with the Duplicolor paint and it turned out kind of cheesy, so I'm leary about painting the dashboard.

I frequent the Joanne's here in Boulder haha, and the old ladies who work there always look at me out of the corner of their eye like "What is that kid in the loud car doing in HERE?." Also, I know exactly what fabric you are talking about, and my Joanne's is out of black and won't even order me any. I bought some of the blue.
If your Joannes has it, PM me and I'll send you money to buy me some!

It won't. I'm upwards of 7 coats on my center console and I can still see the texture perfectly. The only way I can think of getting rid of it would be to sand the plastic down flat, then spray.

They only had a yard or so back in January. It is supposed to be black but it has a blueish/purplish tint to it. I lost my receipt, but they told me that if its out of stock, they can order it back in.

First things I'll be spraying the plastidip on are all the scratched lower interior pieces that I originally painted a cheesy gloss black.

It sticks to vinyl too, I just sprayed my old tan sunvisors with it, since they were going in the garbage anyways. It seems to adhere just great. I bet you could get away with spraying all your remaining tan bits with it, as well as redoing your door cards.
Next time you're at Joanne's, check and see if they'll order it for you. If they will, then my Joanne's Fabrics hates me, and I'd be in your debt if you hooked me up. Could I bribe you with those grey door handles, which I still have?
Oh, and since its synthetic fabric, does anyone know if Rit dye would work on it? It'd be cool to make it a darker black, or allow me to dye another color that they do carry here black.

Update on the PD. You dont have to sand down your center pieces at all!...I was unhappy with one of the pieces; so I took it out of the car and just peeled back the PD....the piece looked brand new straight for the factory....pretty cool. Anyway I just re PD'ed it and it looks the way I want.

Here's my center console all done. I disassembled it into the lid, rear cupholders, the two big sections, and the coin things that clip into the holes. It's nice because those coin things used to be a different color slightly, as they came out of a 95 impreza.

It was pretty easy to take off. Once the stuff you took out to spray the silver pieces is out, you undo the button for the ebrake boot, take a few screws out (two in the front, and two in the compartment bottom), and the whole thing pretty much comes right out.
The PITA is taking out the rear cupholder area, it took me a while to figure out. DON'T take the little screw you see on the bottom of the cupholder section out. The whole thing pops out, use two flat tipped screwdrivers. You can then pull the actual face off of the section to spray it by working your way around with a small screwdriver or something, it just pops off. You can also pull apart the actual cupholder area to spray that, which I did as well, for no real reason other than.... why not? lol. The lid is easy to take off and disassemble to spray that face, its kinda common sense. I couldn't find a way to take the compartment out, it must be glued or something. I just sprayed in there with it on, and was careful not to let it pool up in the bottom.
By the time I get my car back, my whole interior will be plasti-dip haha. I want to see pictures of this dash!!

I'd match it, and the plasti-dip looks best I think on flat surfaces, so it'll look sweet. I'll probably spray the lower half of my dash once I get the car back now haha. I was also thinking about doing the plastic bottom half of my RS doorcards.
Another thought that occurred to me..... what about wheels? People who paint their wheels flat black could use it as opposed to paint that would scratch off, if it would stick. And from what we've discovered so far, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't.

If you have a problem one time, you'll have the problem everytime. The lead weights get removed and you start from scratch each time you change tires and get your wheels balanced. That said, I put quite a few coats of Duplicolor wheel paint and clear on, and it didn't have enough of an effect on the wheel balance. You would be coating the wheel fairly evenly, so it shouldn't make a difference.
Sheepdog - I'll try to remember to check tomorrow before I go to work. I don't really need the door handles at the moment, as I need to get back everything I paid for the fabric.

I'm still waiting on the interior trim that 99subi claimed he was going to send me back before Thanksgiving for a set of mudflaps he's had since then. If they magically appear in my mailbox, I'll let you know.

I just meant if you can get me the fabric, I'll pay you for it, and just send you the handles. I'm certainly not using them. I'm a poor college kid too ;) Also, since I talked to you last I just ordered the RS handles from subarugenuineparts, so I don't need them anymore.
In terms of wheel balancing, just have them tape weighted. That's what I did when we painted my buddy's wheels, specifically to avoid that problem.

I would of course need to drive it for a day or so without a dashboard.

Man I sprayed my console last night and it looks really good! But I forgot that I had to put the AC knobs and stuff back together. I woke up this morning at 5:15 to go to work and I was rushing to get it back together. I felt retarded cuz it took me like 15 minutes to figure out that the control knobs aren't all the same size, lol. Then I realized that I should have painted the silver casing that the AC controls are in, so I'll be back at it again tonight.
| advanracing62 | 03-23-2007 12:26 PM |
I painted the centre section last night, along with the A pillars. Will do the rest of the upper gray stuff this weekend to make it all match, leaving the headliner/visors gray.
I can post pics if anyone is interested.
oh, and I'm coating my V lim lip with this too!

yes - if you mean the silver circle trim rings.
those pieces just pull out.
"gently, but firmly"
otherwise, a cloth wrapped wide tipped screwdriver can help.
but be careful not to mar the right or the dash around it.

It really wasn't too bad, this stuff is extremely forgiving. You don't need to keep the coats absolutely perfect in there, I just did a bunch of light coats making sure not to let any pool in the bottom.

Kelly,
In terms of cleaning, how well would the white PD hold up to brake dust? If a set of wheels were done in PD white, would you be able to clean the wheels and bring them back to a full white, or would the dust kind of stick to the coating and be hard or impossible to get off?
Thanks![/QUOTE]

It should hold up to the dust, it would get dirty, but should come off. Are you putting Plasti Dip on the actual tire? I know people have used it before, but be advised it doesn't like to stick to some rubbers because of the oil content.

Gonna do the HVAC surrounds next.
Then I think I'm gonna do the V-Limited. I think this stuff is gonna be PERFECT for that. Just hit it again every winter when I take it off.

How well is everyone expecting the PD to hold up over time? I used PD on a few misc parts of an old Land Rover, and it faded to a oxidized looking black/charcoal color after a few years. Maybe this could be avoided by regular use of something like Aerospace 303 Protectant.

Sad. Thanks for taking the time to visit the site though. I'll be pulling some of my lower dashboard out tomorrow to dip if the weather holds out.
If it turns out good (and sticks well despite ArmorAll), I'll be redoing every tan plastic piece in that interior. And I do mean everything.

It won't stick unless you sand and wash those pieces bud, especially if theres armorall on there. It'll stick to the paint and then come off with the paint, it did it on my door sills.
Also, I don't think it'll fade too quickly, especially on the interior. I wonder how armorall would look on it though, if it looks decent I bet that would help too. If not, so what, you put a couple more coats on every couple years.

Ok terrific. I cleaned my doorpanels with rubbing alcohol, industrial grade Windex, then brake cleaner and I still had fisheyes.
