I just got done doing my interior trim with plasti-dip, and this stuff is awesome. I did light sanding with 150 grit sandpaper, a quick wash, and then sprayed 3 coats on, letting it dry in 30 minute intervals. It takes about 4 hours to cure I believe. Quick question, after it's cured, if I want to do a few more coats to get a thicker texture, that's okay, right?

I'll take pictures once it's all done.
Kavik 12-15-2008 03:33 PM

I haven't done my interior yet, but i did some other plastic bits with this stuff, after a few coats i let them sit overnight, decided they needed another coat, it stuck just fine for me
SA2USA 12-15-2008 03:36 PM

cool thing bout this stuff is when you get tired of it have your girlfriend or wife pull it off while on a round trip. that swhat i did this weekend.lol

now my interior looks stock again.
4Ring Jelly 12-15-2008 05:07 PM

I painted my grille with this stuff a while back and it held up for over a year, lots of highway driving and winter driving with not peeling or anything. sanded it, primed with with krylon fuzion primer, and then spray plasti dipped it. Only reason i took the grille off was I sold the car.

This summer I painted my ski racks with it...this was almost a disaster. I sanded it all down and then layed down some Rustoleum primer and painted with plasti dip. Then while it was drying I was browsing the PlastiDip site when I saw you werent supposed to use Rustoleum primer. The adhesion was so bad it was peeling off by hand. so I peeled it all off, sanded down some more, and then used a no-name brand primer, then plasti-dipped it. Hopefully this holds up as good as the grille did. I plan on dipping the grille on my current car soon.
eurospek 12-15-2008 06:12 PM

You're not suppose to use any primer with Plasti-Dip IIRC.

Great thread which promted me to get some Plasti-dip and try it out.

I`ve only done the radio surround so far, a light rub over with some vey fine wire wool, a wash and once dried I gave it several (5 or 6 can`t remember) coats of Plasti-dip.
Looks very OE and I`m vey impressed.

I`d love to do the steering wheel centre too, could someone tell me how to remove it?
sheepdog 12-16-2008 11:59 AM

Disconnect your battery, and there are some allen keys through holes on the sides of the airbag. 1 on each side I believe, undo and the airbag comes out.

No need to disconnect the battery. Just remove the two airbag fuses.

I have done this on my 02 STi on several occasions and have never had an 'accidental discharge'.
thejordan 12-17-2008 05:58 PM

has anyone tried plasti-dip on lug nuts and/or center caps?
sheepdog 12-17-2008 07:21 PM

It definitely would not hold up on lug nuts.

Sounds easier than disconnecting the battery but where/which are the two fuses?
integral_machine 12-18-2008 08:41 PM

Yes, this stuff works great on grilles! I have a silver metal mesh that is supposed to be black - it kept chipping off. This stuff holds up really well.
Joe 12-21-2008 12:23 AM

'08 headunit
Does anyone know how the '08 headunit matches the plastidip? I had a silver radio and want something that will match.

+99 to that! I have used it on two Grillcrafts with much success! We're thinking outside of the box with this application!
SILINC3R 12-21-2008 03:56 AM

dang i dont know what to do any more. i have already done my trim pieces twice. once with red paint, the second time with black suede. now im thinking i might have to give this a shot.

It works great. Put on a couple coats, however...and brush it on fast. Otherwise you're get stroke marks. You can also thin the rubber with naptha. I thinned mine with kerosene and it worked fine too since they both come from dinosaurs and old plants.

The pics don`t do it any favours at all. I`m keeping the hazard button black too as I like it :)

Thanks to all on this thread for the insperation to `Plasti-dip` :D

All I want now is a black head unit.

bump, this stuff looks amazing, the whole of NASIOC deserves to see these pics!
Quick question: Has anybody tried any other colors? The blue looks nice, but I'm not sure how well it matches WRB. The yellow would also be cool.
XanRules 01-19-2009 01:47 AM

wanted to very quickly bump this to ask how well this does on dashboards - I got a beige dash and want to make it black.
Also, can it be mixed? I'd like to achieve a nearly OEM dark grey color on a few parts.
2:43AM 01-19-2009 01:22 PM

Also, how does the rubber hold up after deathly-hot sun exposure in the summertime and hot air from the dash vents? I think NOT GOOD for sunshine exposure.

The '05 vent fits into the '04 dash w/o modification? That looks a lot cleaner.

You can mix the colors, yes. I believe you can add pigment to the clear or white plasti-dips.

They discuss it on their website I think. Maybe in the FAQ?

A few pages in to this thread someone painted a grey WRX dash black. Seemed to work well but no reports on durability, but I imagine with a sanding it would do OK.

If you want a grey dash, I have one w/ the airbags I've been trying to get rid of ;)

Sorry. I mean that I have a grey one right now, but I just got a beige one from a '98 and would like to make it grey as well.
XanRules 01-22-2009 12:41 PM

Also, when we say "pigment" - do we mean just like paint pigment?
sheepdog 01-22-2009 04:07 PM

Yea, I don't really have a clue. That's just what I read, you'd want to talk to plasti-dip themselves before you choose exactly what to mix in to change the colors. Also, you'd need to talk to them about how to apply it after mixing, as most people in this thread are using a rattlecan application process.
Kylar 01-22-2009 04:17 PM

i'd say most if not all of the plasti-dip used here is in the spray can variety which i don't believe can be mixed.

I used the black myself and have had it on for almost a year with no issues, just clean with a clean, lint free damp cloth. I use a mircofiber towel
Kylar 01-22-2009 04:32 PM

I also forgot to add, there really isn't a need to sand down the part first. Plus if you don't sand the part you can always peel it off later to go back to OEM and your part wont be damaged :D
aggie113 01-22-2009 05:48 PM

I have some issues with the plasti-dip wearing off on some high friction areas. Specifically the hvac knobs that I twist alot and my b-pillars where they meet the middle section around the body line. I plan on doing something else for those but otherwise it has held up well on the center console area. I find some normal armoral makes it look good for awhile, just don't rub it too hard.
XanRules 01-22-2009 10:55 PM

Meh. If I wreck a can by mixing and pigmenting it's like $4 for the brush-on stuff. No big loss.
swede978 01-22-2009 11:53 PM

Going to do the RS interior, will post before and after when done. Now just need a warm day and find it in Lowe's or HD

There is a little hole in the white plastic piece and another in the door arm. I had to play around with mine for a while to get it back right...
BoostinIX 02-07-2009 07:24 PM

with the pin in that hole, you'll see where the hook should land on the main piece. It was a PITA for me till I got it :p

thoughts? goes with my interior which is RS with the leather stitching in re along with my red graduated fx1

Just finished up doing my whole center console with plasti-dip flat black. I will post pics tomorrow ;)
deadlydave 02-11-2009 01:35 PM

Any idea on how plasti-dip will hold up on external surfaces (i'm thinking heat and UV)?
wawawrx 02-19-2009 12:33 PM

can you paint OVER plasti-dip???
deadlydave 02-19-2009 02:04 PM
can you paint OVER plasti-dip???
No, i'm going to go with that on this one. Plasti-dip is too soft, the paint will crack. Anyone have ideas on uv/heat? Bueller?
LastResort 02-20-2009 11:27 PM

Why not use bedliner instead for the exterior?

predent 02-22-2009 02:52 AM

I have a question for those who have used plasti-dip. I need something that I can either spray on or brush onto a small piece of flat plexiglass so that it won't slide on a slick/glossy surface like dinner table.

I was wondering if this product is rubbery enough that if you were to put your hand on a peice of flat plastic coated in this, would you be able to slide it across a glass surface or would it have enough friction to not slip.
IAMREX 02-22-2009 10:12 PM

I just plasti-dipped my interior pillars, and I would say that it's probably got enough friction for what you're looking for. It comes out witha nice semi-flat texture.
XanRules 02-22-2009 11:13 PM

The actual DIP plasti-dip is worthless.
The spray stuff is great.

Yea, it's probably more plastic-y than rubbery... perhaps rubber spray truck bed liner? There are other rubber sprays out there as well.

Could also use those 100% rubber underbody sprays. Stays kinda soft after it cures

I use it all the time around my shop, older tools and handles on certain machines like my lathes and OD/ID grinders.
mindovaanything 02-23-2009 09:56 AM

i really wish it was warm enough for painting, I think my entire interior is going to get blacked out, plastidip entire dash, center console, and pillars. Use some fabric/carpet dye and black out the headliner and carpet. Damn this weather I want to koji my headlights, smoke my tails, and paint my exhaust piping.
DC16A2 02-23-2009 10:24 AM

^ I did my A-pillars last month when it snowed... cold, but worth it =)
