Can we get a "fix those rattles" thread going? part 20

WoRteX 08-27-2016 11:20 PM

So I think I have a new rattle on my 2015 wrx.

Everytime I get in the car and close my door I hear something rattle in the trunk area. After a lot of trial and error I think I might have found the culprit. I believe its the driver side tail light that's rattling or something inside there is. When the trunk is open it doesn't rattle but when its shut it does. Anyone else notice this??? I'll be taking it in for an oil change soon and I'll have them take a look.

I did have a rattle that sounded like the centre high mount brake...turns out it was the centre seatbelt that was making the noise.

I haven't gone through all 46 pages, so excuse me if this has been answered.

I've got a '16 STI and the outer gauge surround plastic (where the speedometer and such is), the black ring, not the clear part itself, has a rattle in the lower left corner that's driving me nuts. Is there a simple/known fix for this? I haven't pulled it off yet but I'd imagine there is just a clip that isn't fully seating and needs some help. When I push down on that corner the rattle goes away for a small amount of time.

i had this as well, there was a simple solution. you have to take the gauge surround off, being careful not to let the clips that the screws attach to fall back behind the cluster. i bought some sticky felt (aka Subaru Rattle Protection) from hobby lobby for like $2 and wrapped it around the two bottom clips on the surround that slot into the cluster. once you take it apart you'll see what I'm talking about.

[quote=Pantyraider;44513053]My passenger door is also rattling (2017 STI). Only when playing music loudly, though.

Might have to try this fix eventually:

I took my door card off and put sticky felt on all the places on the door where the plastic was clearly rubbing (where paint was missing ). it rattles less but there is still a clicking sound inside, I assume it must be these stupid switches. going to attempt this with hot glue this weekend, I am absolutely sick of this rattle. a couple square feet of sticky felt later and its the only one I have.

99% of door rattles are those switches. If you haven't done the hot glue fix do that asap. I haven't had any door rattles since doing that.

I still haven't gotten around to doing it.

What's the easiest method to getting the door cards off? I think I'll do that this weekend.
WoRteX 08-31-2016 02:30 PM

Easiest way is to use a door remove tool. Its a small plastic pry tool. If you do not have that you CAN use your hands just be careful doing it. Start from where the speaker is on the door. You can usually get a nice grip behind there and just gently tug forward towards you and it should pop. Then slowly just pull the rest out. Make sure the windows are down first.

On my '17 WRX, the huge rattle (almost a loud clunking sound) in my trunk was the inside emergency trunk opener handle. Stuck a thick piece of fairly rigid foam between the handle and the trunk liner, and my trunk is now totally silent.

any tips for "unplugging" the door card so it can be moved away from the vehicle?
_brian_ 09-04-2016 05:02 PM

hot glued up the door switches today. I found that wasn't enough to take all the movement out of them so I removed the window switch and wedged some foam into the slot it sits in. still getting a vibration noise, but the ticking I kept hearing over bumps seems to be gone. awaiting the next rattle

[quote=LuxeAutoConcepts;43987071]So I thought my rattles from from the wires hitting the door panel also, but after seeing that everything was nice and wrapped from the factory I started probing around. Here's what I found, and I'm happy to report that after this MY DOORS ARE SILENT! Now I can actually just concentrate on the music instead of this horrible rattle. Hope this helps others!!

Here's a video showing these things making noise!:diaf::diaf:

Breakdown of the door panels and wires

Solution: Temporary if I need to replace a switch and 100% works!:banana:

So I finally got around to doing this on my car. I've got a 2017 and I believe it's changed slightly as the window switch looks slightly different (I think, anyways - I forgot to take some picutres)... anyways, the door lock/unlock switch was the only one that was loose on mine. The window switch was rock solid. So I only applied some hot glue to the lock switch.

Rattle is gone :ritz:

The rattle was only present on my passenger front door, and only when the stereo was turned up semi loud. There was no rattle from just driving over bumps.

Hopefully the fix lasts forever, though I don't see how the glue could come off.

another update about the rattles above. I still had a rattle/ticking after gluing/felting my switches, so I added more foam around the door. the rattle was still there. so today i removed the a-pillar panel and the tweeter cover. i put sticky foam on the 3 clips that face forward and on two of the slots that the tweeter cover sits in. i also added a bunch of sticky felt on the a-pillar cover and, crucially, on part of the a-pillar that the cover seemed to touch if i lightly tapped it. i think all the rattles are gone now. i hope so because i've spent way too many hours at this point

EDIT: I also lined my glove box with sticky felt. It's kind of ugly but very quiet.
