GG has some type of rattle in the taillight area on the hatch with moderate bass. Tried holding the trim down at the top of the hatch, seemed to help but didnt quite solve it. Not necessarily a big issue but I like quality audio and hearing the rattle annoys the crap out of me. Any ideas?
| silverscoob10 | 01-14-2015 06:37 PM |
I used a large piece of moving blanket and folded it a couple times. then I cut it into 4 sections the size of each of my doors. I took off the door panel and put it over the metal door.. then I used the clips that hold the door panel on to hold the blanket as well. No more annoying rattles when the radio is on and bass up.

It's almost like a knocking sound more than a rattle and its kind of random possibly on the drivers side trunk wheel well area but its hard to tell.
I am also having this noise. Mine is coming from the passenger side. I thought I read about someone saying its with the shock shaft hitting the tube?

How about the rear window creaking/squeaking when cold?
Ive fixed almost every rattle except this one... i make sure there is no ice or anything around the sill or in between the rubber gasket and trunk lid below the window.
I cant for the life of me figure it out.

So many rattles coming from my dash now on my 14 STI. Gonna pull the dash and just insulate everything. Got an annoying ticking noise from the drivers front window when it is opened slightly. My 07 didn't have anywhere near as many rattles. Oh the frustration hahaha

Driver dash area rattle that only occurs when going over 50ish. It's not the normal A pillar, defronst vent, or VIN area rattle. Any other ones out there?

So far on cold mornings where my voice sounds like a 12 year old when my balls get sucked into my stomach, I have the following rattles:
Sounds like inside my steering wheel something rattling unti the cabin warms up
Upper dashboard where it meets the windshield area
I fixed the rear brake light by applying felt tape underneath the brake light unit

I searched the thread for this fix and couldn't find it. The A pillar issue is discussed in the summary on page 1 of the thread, but it's marked as unsolved. You're saying there is a fix/mod for this?
For me, my 2012 WRX hatch has almost always generated a squeaking sound from the bottom of both A-pillars in the corners of the dash (both sides), but only when it's cold outside (less than 40 deg) and only when I go over bumps. In the summer, I rarely hear the noise. In winter, even after the car is warmed up, I hear the noise when I go over any bump in the road, but usually only at speed. Never or rarely heard it in a parking lot.

Funny you mention that, when I had my 07 I was tracking down a squeak/creak that came and went that sounded like it was coming from the suspension when I turned in the mornings. After months of tracking it down it ended up being the trunk latch. I just added a little lithium grease and it stopped.

This stuff is your best friend when it comes to getting rid of rattles in these cars.
Just take the A-pillar off and foam tape along the edge where it meets the dash. Also, throw some pieces on the little tabs that interlock with the dash trim.

Also, for everyone that has door rattles, I feel your pain. I've tried many things over the years to silence the rattles, with limited success. What I figured out is that the plastic sheet, aka vapor barrier, is the culprit. It reverberates like crazy.
The window controls on the arm rest are also annoying as ****.
Basically, I removed the plastic vapor barrier, and using sheets of Dynamat Xtreme, I covered every portion of the door metal. Make sure to seal every hole in the metal that you can. Also, apply some D'mat to the plastic door card, particularly the flat expanses around the arm rest area. Finally, I just sandwiched some pieces of foam between the plastic door card and the metal. All of this takes a good amount of time and attention to detail, but in the end you are rewarded with NO RATTLES, much cleaner sound from your speakers, and less road noise coming in through the doors.
Lastly, if you haven't already, remove those damn white plastic cubes attached to the inside of the door cards (all 4 doors). They are a source of rattles as well.

I also have fixed this rattle on my car :) It's the plastic cover over the seatbelt loop adjuster/slider rattling against the B Pillar surround. Next time you hear it rattle, just reach up and press in on it, and the rattle goes away. I fixed it by placing some soft-side velcro on the inside of the B-pillar, so the slider cover isn't able to rattle against it.

Just wanted to chime in and say that this thread helped me immensely. Yesterday I spent the day using a bunch of tips in this thread to stop my car from continuing to sound like a 1985 pickup truck whenever I hit even the smallest bumps. :unamused:
I figured I should consolidate all the info I used here to prevent others from having to spend considerable time searching this thread, like I did.
Rattles fixed: (2011 STI sedan)
- A pillars (credit to .kyle)
- All 4 doors
- Rear deck lid (credit to rygarde)
Parts I used:
1) 1/2" Backer Rod (Home Depot Link)

2) Plastic trim removal set. This is a must have to prevent scratching the hell out of you interior. (Amazon link)

3) Foam weather stripping. I think I used 3/8" thick. (Home Depot link)

Rear deck lid
- Cut the proper length of backer rod to fit along the entire edge of the back window and the rear deck lid. Tuck the backer rod between the window and the deck lid. Then use a plastic trim tool to tuck it into place perfectly, so it's out of sight.
- I chose to remove the 3 car seat clip covers completely. However, if you want to keep them, you could put some small pieces of the foam weather strip around the edges of them so that they don't rattle against the deck lid.
- Open the trunk and shove 2 rags (or t-shirts, as someone else previously suggested) up between the plastic deck lid and the metal frame. I found 2 square holes big enough to allow me to shove 2 rags in there.
A pillars
- Use your plastic pry tool to pop the "SRS Airbag" covers off of the A pillar covers and unscrew the screw behind it. Then you just pull out the pillar covers towards the center console. (It's just 1 clip that holds it in place after the screw is removed)
- Once the pillar cover was removed, I put weather stripping along the edge of the windshield where the A pillar appeared to rattle.
- I also put weather stripping around any free moving connections that may rattle against the pillar cover. I also added some weather stripping in the 2 spots where the bottom of the A pillar cover slides into as well as around the area where the plastic clip pops into.
4 doors
- As someone previously noted, there are 4 useless white boxes attached to the backside of your interior door panels. Follow the necessary steps to removed your door panels (there are a bunch of Youtube videos). Then look for the white box that is attached on the inside. Tap on it and you will immediately notice that it rattles against the door panels, even with just the slightest tapping.
- The white boxes are attached via 2 weird plastic clips. After messing with it for a bit I found that simply ripping it off is the best solution.
- I initially intended to weather strip the edges of the interior door panel before reinstalling. But after removing the box and popping the door panels back on, I wasn't able to get the door to rattle at all, so I didn't bother with that.
- Then reinstall the door panels/door switches.
Previous to doing all of this, my car would rattle obnoxiously with even the slightest amount of sound coming from my door speakers. And the smallest bumps would cause the A pillars and rear deck lid to rattle like crazy.
After performing the above fixes my car is now dead silent with music and small - large bumps. I highly recommend doing this if you have a GR Sedan/hatch.
Thanks to all those who came up with these great ideas!

Anyone have a dash rattle in the center top of the passenger dash?
Seems not to be the A-pillar as I have fixed that one. As well, this does not seem to be in the defroster vent area.
What is the easiest access to this area without pulling the dash out?
Thanks in advance.

Has anyone been able to fix the homelink mirror rattle? Mine rattles incessantly. The problem is that the adhesive pad doesn't cover the entire base. Think of it like a small square adhesive within a bigger plastic square. The sides of the plastic base not covered by the adhesive pad contact the windshield during NVH and cause rattle. It sucks. The obvious solution is the replace the adhesive pad with a bigger contact patch...I'm just not sure where/what to buy...anyone have any ideas? 3M something like this might work. Anyone know how to remove the existing base without screwing up the plastic/windshield? Just pry it off with plastic trim removal tool??

I had to replace my mounting base with a new part as the set screws strip out if you over tighten or ever remove them. It's a horrible design which subaru tried to address in an update bracket, but it's still an issue. My new bracket worked perfect for like 3 months but the rattle is back again.

Shift Knob Rattle - STi

I'd been getting a real tinny, almost metal on metal rattle from what I thought was the dash/HU area. I thought it was something in the glove box or behind the HU, but turns out it was coming from the shift knob.
On the STi shift knob, there is a silver plastic trim ring around the base. If you turn the knob upside down, you'll see that there is a small gap between that ring and the "hole" in the bottom of the knob. I stuffed some teflon tape into that gap in order keep it from contacting the walls of the hole.

Nope. From everything I've read, the 2015 models have SIGNIFICANTLY improved interior build quality which prevents you guys from dealing with the unbelievable amount of rattling that the 08-14 suffers from.
Even my '07 with 110k miles never rattled as much as my '11, with only 24k miles, seems to.

I didn't read through all this yet, but I know this one!!
4. Rearview mirror - if you have warrenty left then it's all good but what if you don't? any one have a fix for this?
If this is for the homelink mirror, there is a screw that will loosen the mirror, you slide it off, then there is another screw that holds the base plate still. That was the one that came loose on my 11 WRX tighten it up with a little more loctite, and put it all back together. Problem solved!

I had a rattle in my steering wheel. Turns out I was missing screws to hold the air bag in place...
I do have a bad rattle near my A pillar also! Glad to hear I am not the only one but this is crazy how many of us have these rattles. Mine is a 2014 wrx and I didn't think such a new car would rattle so much. It also seems like the right side of my dash rattles also.
Does anyone know if we fix these rattles ourselves if insurance/warranty will not cover us if we get into an accident?
Thank you!

Super annoying rattle in what I thought was sunroof. Since narrowed down to something under headliner on passenger side, but not in sunroof assembly. Applying pressure with hand stops it, but it always returns after a few days. Gonna have to get in there to hunt it down...anyone else have this?

I have this same rattle.
Stopped by a subi dealership and they told me it's caused by all the wiring (sunroof / auto-dimming mirror power cord).
They told me they opened the area up and wrapped the cords in foam tape. Couple days later the rattle came back.
Same as you I can stop it by applying a little pressure with my hand to the right and below the passenger map light.

I had a rattle from my speakers for awhile in both my driver side and passenger side doors, this was caused from the metal of the speaker hitting against the metal of the door.
As I installed after market speakers I had to drill new holes as the old existing ones (that had plastic dampening things on them) didn't line up.
I fixed this problem with using a low profile but thick foam in between the speaker and the door, the rattle went away after installing the foam.

I have a 2014 Subaru Legacy and recently I noticed a weird rattling in the trunk over 40 MPH, i crawled back there while someone else was driving and it sounds like a wire is loose or there is a piece of plastic rattling around. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem

"4 doors
- Then reinstall the door panels/door switches."
Do the above mysterious white boxes exist for GD cars? 2003 wrx wagon here. Very annoying rattle coming from driver's side... door? window? sounds like metal on glass. Tends to only happen when going over consistently bumpy roads... seems to be more so when up or down-hill? ... both doors / windows sound fine when closing / opening.

I thought my old 1997 WRX was rattly with age and when I upgraded to my 02 version 8 WRX I'd have left rattles in the past... nope. :sad banana:
Has anyone with a Version 7~10 WRX wagon/hatch got lots of rattles coming from the passengers rear side of the car? Mainly the boot area? I can't figure out at all where it's coming from. :furious:

I have one not mentioned. Rattling on acceleration, sometimes bumps, sometimes putting the car in park... sometimes random. 2004 fxt 4eat. Neighbor and I have narrowed it down to drivers side at the lowest point of the b pillar under the rear door speaker/ seat belt area. I have removed all seats and peeled back carpet and found nothing. That location underneath is solid uni body. I cannot live without knowing the answer haha.

2015 Wrx Limited 6mt
I have 3 rattles left...
rear decklid. fixed
shifter surround (not reverse lever). fixed. Loose wire under it. tape it down.
Sounds like one is coming from the guage cluster area near the tweater/a pillar area.
I put foam behind the cluster pressing on the dash.. still there
Rattle from somewhere on the hvac/nav area...
took it apart and still can't find it.
Still have a rattle coming from somwhere around the passenger left seat rail...
If any of you have a tapping rattle on the rear passenger door, it's the striker and door latch. I didn't pin point it to what exactly though, I just tapped the striker with a hammer to get the door to latch closer.

I have a 07 wrx with a rattle at idle. Doesn't happen every time. It's not knock I know that. You hear it in the cabin of the car on the passenger side. Sounds like it's coming from the engine bay. But when I open the hood with the car running you don't hear it. When you increase the rpm's it goes away. Any ideas?

I have an 2005 wrx, recently purchased it. my cruise switch had the rattle , I read it was the circuit board, I removed it dissembled the switch, put tape on the circuit board, the part that is rattling is the button on the end. carefully pry that button out , you will see a spring in the little hole, pull the spring out, stretch that spring out and reinstall the switch and all is good no rattle.

I think I can help you friend. I used to have an 08 hatch that did the same. If you remove the hatch plastic you notice a bunch of plastic clips holding wiring and such. I bought some Velcro and used the soft part of it underneath the clips, put it back together, and rattles were gone. I'm almost positive that is what you're hearing rattling.

Not gonna happen. I have owned quite a few cars, anything from muscle to German luxury. ALL of them have had rattles with age. My $56k E46 M3 had a couple rattles within a couple years. You will drive yourself CRAZY trying to find them all.
It's funny that you are going to get rid of a perfectly fine car because it rattles. I fixed all my rattles a long time ago. AC/DC and volume :D
My hatch has had rattles since I bought it (bought it with 20k on the clock). Not even going to mess with them. Just going to keep the volume up and enjoy the car. Not worth getting pissy aboutespecially since I've owned a couple 80's fords.now you want to talk about rattlesthat car was pretty embarrassing.

I've cushioned a lot of those trim clips, this rattle I've been chasing is different. I pulled all of the trim, the deck, the foam bits, the jack, the tools, etc, etc out of the trunk area. Still have the rattle. I narrowed it down to the hatch latch by going around the back when the hatch was closed and grabbing the hatch under the very bottom edge just above the bumper and alternating pulling up while pushing down near the base of the rear window. There was a bunch of play and the sound was similar to what I was hearing.
The fix was to loosen the bolts on the striker plate and push it as far down as possible and retighten the bolts. Do the same but in the other direction on the latch in the hatch. Now the hatch closes tightly and the rattle is gone! I had to adjust the rubber screw in dampers on the sides of the hatch too.
Sheesh that is hugely relieving. Soo much more quiet now

The front dash left side vent area rattle is not directly pin pointed to the vent. When you hear the rattle you can press anywhere on the dash and itll stop, or at least it does for me. When I hear it I press my finger right at the top of the curve of the dash above the gauges and it will stop as well
I got annoyed and removed the plastic trim around the gauges and noticed one of the screws holding the cluster to the dashboard was loose.
Theres 2 screws and 3 clips holding the trim in, but underneath that theres 2 screws above the cluster and the one on the right was a little loose for me.
Not sure if this has helped yet but my ride to work this morning I did not hear anything. I have left the trim off for now so that I can hear more accurately where its coming from. With that trim off you can slightly see behind the gauges incase theres a cable or something loose or vibrating or whatever.
I also have the speaker vent off and will be removing the tweeter as well if the sound resurfaces. Theres also a screw you can see once you remove the speaker grill that if you push on the dash you will notice the screw doesn't stop the dash from moving. I added a washer there so it wouldn't move just because.
Will hopefully know more by the time I get home.

Rattle came back and I noticed that it was the mounts right above the gauge cluster that was vibrating onto the plastic housing of the gauge cluster. I took out my trim tool and pushed a decently thick piece of felt between each mounting point and the rattle went away. Soon as I took the felt out it started rattling again and you could stop it by pressing on the dash, on the top, near the vent, etc etc. So give it a shot and see if it helps for you.

Rattle came back a few days later and noticed the clear cover on the gauges would rattle top center if you thumped on it. I crammed some thick felt between the clear cover and the white mounting points at the bottom. Did this on both sides are so far havent gotten the rattle.
