Can we get a "fix those rattles" thread going? part 7
Okay, since this whole thread is on rattling noises, I figured I might as well ask about my own
I have a regular 2007 2.5iwith nearly 12000 miles on it
My car started making a really strange buzzing noise around 3500rpm, and it would go on for about 200rpm past that, no noise before, no noise after about 3700.
I brought it to Mastro Subaru of Tampa 3 times now, and each time they've said it was the heat sheild, they tighten it, and say the noise is gone. But as I drive the car off the lot, I hear the noise.
It is a noise that is only made when the car is moving.
I've talked to several mechanics, all of them say it is neither an engine, nor a transmission noise. It seems to be coming from the engine bay, when I hear the noise it sounds like it's right from the center of the dashboard.
Anybody have any ideas for next time I bring it in? Any idea what it could be?
Thanks.
I am not sure what your's sounds like, however I had what I think was a similar sound coming from my 06 2.5i. I checked all the pipes, shields, etc....I later determined that it was an A/C coolant line in the engine bay that was just slightly vibrating against the frame rail. It sounds sortof like a hammer tapping on the metal, the only thing is that mine did it at speed as well as at a stop. Its on the passenger side of the engine bay, next to the wheel well. There are two hoses with a metal clamp that holds the two of them parallel to each other, and that was what was rattling against the frame. Check that when you get some time. If it is that, I put a piece of rubber hose on the bottom side of that bracket between the hoses and the frame, then zip tied the hose to the bracket. I didnt want to take the risk of bending the A/C line and putting a kink in it.
ErasureWRX 06-07-2007 08:37 AM

Not sure if this has been clarified before, but just recently I have been experiencing a rattle from what sounds like behind the dash. This only happens when I slowly get moving from a stop, with low RPMs. The noise is hard to describe, but it does not sound like a metal-on-metal noise. I guess it sounds more plastic-like?
I'll try to replicate it when i go for lunch, so I have a fresh incident in my mind so I can describe it better.
AKHick 06-12-2007 03:19 PM

I just fixed one in my driver's side A-Pillar that sounded like washer that came loose and was just 'tinging' around on the bolt. That's not what it was and I don't know what it was as I drove around with the A-Pillar off and pushed on everything but it didn't result in anything.
So I just installed this stuff like Dynamat, called BQuiet out of Alberta, on the A-Pillar piece and the noise is gone. It wasn't that much so I don't think I just covered it up, but I don't care. The noise is not there and my 100 mile commute is much better.

This only happens at low RPM with at least 75% throttle. Any ideas?
wGEric 06-13-2007 06:56 PM

I have a rattle in the back drivers side by the shock. I've pulled my trunk apart and the seat apart but couldn't find anything that would be making that noise. One snowy day a car slid into my on that side. There wasn't any damage that I noticed but ever since then I have had that rattle. Could it be the shock?

Anyone have a rattle from their dash like infront of the clock? I think its from a harmonic of my exhaust because it didn't used to do this and all of a sudden it started and only happens at some RPMS... my exhaust doesn't drone badly though.

Yeah, i had the same problem....i pulled the clock out and put 3m double-sided foam tape on the base of the clock and while i had the clock out fixed a few of the wires that seemed to be tapping on the vent assembly. That acctually fixed 95% of the rattle(still searching for other 5% lol) that seemed to be from in front of the clock. For me it seemed to be the way the sound was reflected back from the window that made it seem as though the sound was in front of the clock. Otherwise i imagine the strip on which the the vin plate is needs double sided foam tape along the length of it. That really helped me tremedously. Hope this was of some help!
ErasureWRX 06-22-2007 08:21 AM

Well, my car just added another rattle to its inventory. Exhaust rattle :(. I'll try pulling the clock and all, but I think my rattle was a precurser to the loose spring bolt(s).

Sorry if this had been discussed at length already, but I've already waded through 8 pages and haven't seen much about it.

I have an '05 STi and at ANY speed, I hear a creaking noise, much like a bushing that needs greased in the back behind the seats. I can't tell if it's from both the driver and passenger side, but it's there. It's really noticeable at slower speeds in developments and such where the road and engine noises aren't very high yet. It's an annoying ass "creak creak creak" over every bump you take.

Any ideas? Do I need to just grease the bushings or is this much more difficult?
Vahnatai 07-06-2007 12:24 AM

My STI seats squeak like a mother. It's the bottom part mostly, while the back portion does a little bit too.
clbd39 07-10-2007 09:28 AM

Well I have an 02 WRX with 55,000 miles on it and I've been hearing a rattle for a while. IT sounds like a bunch of nuts and bolts in a can rattling. It almost seems like a loose heatshield but I think I checked them! It only does it when the car is hot, not on the morning start up but after that it does it all day between about 1500 rpm's to 2500 rpms. I've been told it could be a lifter problem or a loos heatshield or even a turbo problem. Any ideas?
Thanks!
Sausage 07-10-2007 09:38 AM

2007 wrx rattles:

vf39 turbo swap rattle :

The clamp holding the hotside to the center cartridge of the turbo is flush against your transmission.
To fix it, just loosen clamp, rotate, retighten.

Cobb heat shield rattle:
The front bumper/driver edge of the shield also hits the transmission. So to fix it, just bend it towards the turbo, and you're golden

Take out your back seat and tighten the bolts, especially on the two black verticle stiffening and the horiontal (under the bottom seat cushion) stiffening rod. I had the same creak, especially when torquing the chassie (hitting an incline at an angle) and that made it go away.

metallic rattle when I turn off the ignition. I got under the car this morning and shook the exhaust pretty good and couldn't recreate the sound unless I pounded on the cat after the DP (turboxs race.)

heatshields?
clbd39 07-11-2007 06:58 PM

pound on it with a clay hammer to recreate the sound... we may have the same problem dragon!

mine "seemed" to be coming from the downpipe, i went to a friends shop and we listened with the "ears" and seemed to pinpoint it there....

dont have a clay hammer, doh.

Just had my girlfriend start it and shut it down while I was laying down near the car. It really does sound like its coming from the race cat, although I won't rule out that it's my fat 4" DP hitting the turbo heatshield.
clbd39 07-12-2007 09:01 AM

yea the sound i'm having seemed to be coming from the 4 inch DP as well, but i can't figure it out, does TurboXS have a dual layered DP?

glepko 08-30-2007 12:48 PM

That lousy rear seat noise just developed on my 02 with 60k. I can only blame myself. I turned around in a STEEPLY inclined parking lot and lifted a wheel while turning (at a very low speed BTW). There was a snap/clunk behind the seat and it's been creaking over every bump since. (had the car checked by our senior tech at the store to rule out suspension or bushing failure)

Thanks to all for posting tips on addressing it, I'll get busy over the holiday!

It's insanely annoying, especially knowing it was my own carelessness that contributed to it.

windshield/roof cracking noise
Great thread, thank you all!

06 STi - no mods, 7000 miles.

My major problem is this really loud and really annoying rattle that seems to be coming right from where the windshield meets the roof of the car - in the center. Whenever driving over sudden uneven pavement where the body of the car is flexed, a loud creaking/cracking noise is heard. The noise seems to be coming from above my head, a bit to the right... I've removed most of the headlinder and stuffed foam and some silicone between the windshield and the roof, but to no avail.

If anyone has experienced this or found a solution, I'd appreciate a note.

Thanks,

Ben

I had a very similar thing, but from the rear window on my 07 that was slowly but surely driving me insane!!...Lift the outer seal carefully with your finger nail or a zip-tie and spray all the way along it with some wd40...trust me,may be worth a try as it cured mine and I've had half the vehicle apart in the last 2 months or so searching for the answer....It was my 76 year old Mom that came up with the solution in the end:lol:

Hi everyone, great thread here. I read back several pages and couldn't find this rattle listed so I figured I'd ask.

It's less a rattle and more a creak. I have an 07 WRX sedan, brand new (1500 miles), and since like 700 miles I've been noticing this creaking sound. (might have started sooner, I just didn't notice).

It happens at low speed, when applying the breaks. It sounds almost like a rubbing as the wheels slow down--like rrurr-rrurr-rrurr. I think it's coming primarily from the right rear wheel. The car is stock, so theres no way my tires should rub. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

this might not be the most applicable place for this, but i just put a pair of 6.5" coaxial speakers in my front doors. a few days later, both sides started buzzing really loudly. the vibration is most likely caused increased power over the stock ones, thus moving more air. it also feels like the built in tweeter is coming in contact with the door panel (BINGO) but I just wanted to know if anyone has run into this problem, and anyone has any solutions. the car is an 06 impreza sedan and the speakers are polk db650's

Rear hatch squeak over bumps or when cornering
I recently resolved an irritating creak/sqeak noise from the rear of my wagon when going over bumps or cornering. Had my wife drive while I sat in the back of the car, heard it from the base of the hatch.

Solution: wrap a piece of electrical tape around the rearward facing portion of the tailgate striker (where the latch grabs it).

Took the play out of it and no more noise.:disco:

I was looking at a used 98 Outback and was trying to find a rattle from a heat shield. Turned out some little pebbles had found their way into the shield. What I would recommend is taping around with a mallet until you duplicate the rattle, and then remove the offending heat shield, or wrap a big hose clamp around it and clamp it down tight.

That would be the famous misnamed vin plate rattle. It's not the vin plate itself and there is a fix. Search for VIN plate rattle. I am not awake yet. Need more espresso.

I recently removed my glove box to do the DRL mod and once I put it back in, I started to notice the glovebox rattle. I tried the black tape around U clasp, but that wore out. I then took my glove box out again, and put it back in making sure it was lined up as best as I could. Once all back together, NO MORE RATTLE!!!!

I think just holding the glove box up and towards the back with as much pressure as I could use while bolting it back down did it.

Hope this helps someone.

i looked through most of these posts and did not see my problem.

i have a 07 WRX limited and and the one thing that drives me nuts is my drivers side front window squeaks every time i roll it done i don't know what to do.

it is not a mechanical squeak it is coming from the window rubbing on the plastic and i cant WD40 it cuz it would smear all over the window iv tried cleaning it and nothing seems to work if anyone has any ideas it would be much appreciated!!!

My window squeak usually goes away on its own. IIRC, some members have used silicon to lubricate the window parts.

2007 STi - Noise from Right Rear behind seat.

Ever since the first day I recieved my 2007 STi there has been this rattle that starts at speeds above 40 MPH. The rattle is there regardless of road conditions.

The sound - Its coming from the trunk/gas lid door cable vibrating against the inner fender.

The Fix - Pop the trunk open and loosen the inner trunk liner on the right side and you will find the trunk/gas lid cable. Rap the cable up in some electrical tape to absorb the vibration and tape the cable up to the wire harness next to it. This will not affect the cable's operation at all.

Hope this helps.

Get you a can of silicone and roll down the windows and spray it into the tracks.

This is the best stuff I have ever used (please ignore the web address its the only picture I could find). Go to a Honda Dealership and pick up a can.

I traded trunks with an STI owner recently. Just in the last few days, the most annoying rattle is coming from the rear. Nobody has been around to sit in the car with me and help me figure it out, and I have tried EVERYTHING I can think of to fix it. I've searched all throughout NASIOC and none of the fixes are doing anything.

Here's what I know:
It happens on small bumps and increases with the size of the bump.
SOUNDS like it's coming from directly behind me.
Isn't the spare tire cover.
Isn't the jack (first thing I thought of).
Isn't the rear deck (I don't THINK)
Sounds like plastic, as opposed to metal on metal contact.
The best way I can describe it is a "chatter."

I think it might be the trunk rattling against the bumper, or even the wing rattling against the trunk. The trunk does feel loose even though everything is bolted down tight. The only thing I haven't tried is dynamat and that's because I have no idea how to use it. I don't think putting some sticky paper all over the inside of my trunk is going to do much, especially since I don't even have an aftermarket sound system (it's a stock TR) I think this thing might be driving me crazy, and I am beginning to feel like Adrian Monk. I don't even want to drive until I get this damn thing fixed.

Thanks for any ideas.

Have you checked the bolts. Two in the front and two in the back holding te seat to the floor. I think they are 12mm , maybe 14. Mine were loose and it made a squeek. Don't over torgue of course, but make sure that they are real snug. The rear ones may be covered, but the cover comes off (carefully) and snaps back on.

I've got a squeek in my passenger seat also....I'll check the bolts but I swore it was coming from the upper portion of the seat when you lean back into it.
God, I have that too. The following is a suggestion from post #70 that I may have to give a try.
I did just that and it still didn't work. My dad was under the car and said it was coming from the outside in the engine bay near the transmission. Gonna do the outside assembly of the clutch when I have the time.

i still have the rear left C pillar metallic ticking/rattling sound when driving over uneven roads *sigh* I have tried various ways of troubleshooting by cushioning contact points, taping plastic parts but to no avail... i'm beginning to suspect it's due to the seat belt mechanism... could it due to some loose metallic part within the mechanism which is causing the sound? i'm thinking of getting thick, soft foam and stuffing in the C pillar housing space to at least muffle the ticking/rattling sound

I have this rattling sound, almost a buzzing that occurs whenever I let out the clutch and the engine pulls a little. It sounds like the fron lisense plate but I checked it twice. And it only does it when I drive so I can't see it from outside.

Any Ideas anyone?
