Lboogie 05-25-2009 11:13 PM

Awesome job Alex! That hazard button came out cherry.
under0athh51189 05-25-2009 11:45 PM

just wondering where exactly do you buy this and what does the can look like. i went to lowes today and couldnt find anything in the paint section that said plasti dip on it. also what grit sand paper do you use on this and do you have to use primer? somebody said just use alcohol pads and dont sand and you dont need to prime it.
under0athh51189 05-25-2009 11:47 PM

also can you get that shifter surround for the 05 wrx and will it fit?
under0athh51189 05-25-2009 11:51 PM

^^^^by the way alex it looks awesome. that is exactly how i want mine to turn out. any pointers of how to prep and what paint

plasti-dip black spray paint. cleaned the parts with dawn. after everything was dry sprayed 4 coats, 30min between coats. no sanding.

as for the button sanded the silver paint off with 150 grit, then 600 then rubbing compound.

the trim i just took out any imperfections using the 150, was thinking about polishing down to a mirror finish but i was tired so i called it at that.

not sure about fitment. i don't remember what the shifter was like in my friends wrx, but it is a 05 sti if that helps?

Flatirons Tuning (a vendor on here) is putting together a package of the 3 STi limited Black Auto climate control HVAC knob centers. Should be available in the next couple days.

^Sweet where we gonna find it???
Just saw the first set of these that came in to Flatirons Tuning today, and they are TOTALLY sweet.

Flat black, white lettering, and with a bit of a rubberized texture to it almost like that of the plasti-dip itself. WAY more legit looking than the decal overlays I've seen in person, where you can see the little bit of silver still around the lettering. I'd never seen the STi limited centers in person, but now I'm confident that they're teh uber awesome. Totally ordering myself a set.

They should be up on their website Thursday, but I'm sure you could call Jon Cooley over there and he could set you up before then, if you really wanted.

vms150 06-15-2009 01:04 PM

Here is my plasti-dipped dash. I did 6 coats each piece. 4 from about 12" away then the last 2 from about 18" away. Came out with a nice pebbly, matte finish. Also my "JDM" style hazard button. Sanded down to the red, then rubbing compound and 3 coats of wax.
also. Absolutely for the love of god sand before you apply this stuff.
you really don't need to sand before applying plasti-dip to interior parts... in fact, if you don't sand you can remove it later and have your stock interior back if you get sick of the black.

here's how mine turned out with no sanding, and only a few light coats...

it lasted well over a year with no wear/peeling/scratches. i actually redid one of the vent rings because a bug landed in it while it was drying just by rubbing the plast-dip off until it was good as new and respraying.
sheepdog 06-23-2009 04:44 PM

Yes, but if you sand your durability factor goes up significantly. Its all about what you prefer, a potentially reversible mod or a durable permanent one.
bcfsc 06-23-2009 04:47 PM

woah that looks sweet
SubieNate 07-07-2009 02:55 AM

I'm going to do this to my wagon. Now, I want the best possible durability without destroying the look of the plastic (AKA not sanding so much it damages the texture or shows through the paint) what grit of sandpaper should I use?

I was also thinking of buying some TSP for prep instead of just using alcohol or acetone. Thoughts?

grant it plasti-dip is easy to apply and looks great, the down side is that it's a dust magnet and hard to clean. You can see the how lint and dust is grabbed by it in many of the previous pictures.

Keep a tack cloth handy to just dab on the plasti dipped surfaces to get the lint/dust off. Or vacuum the panels off with a bristle headed hose attachment when you're cleaning inside the car. Its also great for getting dust/crumbs out of the shifter & e-brake boots.
Smoke 08-01-2009 10:36 PM

Does sanding make it more durable and let it stick easier?

I bought some primer too I am going to use just for better bonding.
Also does it seem rough afterwards or am I spraying wrong?

I'm going to pick up some 1500 grit sandpaper to smooth things out.
Un0RiGiNaL 08-01-2009 10:40 PM

Hey guys I have some duplicolor gunmetal wheel paint, how do you think it will look if i spray that?

I currently have my **** plasti dipped but i hate it cause its hard to clean and gets dust and lint all over it.

And i dont care about being able to go back to gray cause when i bought the car the trim was fu**ed up anyways, it had some wierd ass stains that wouldnt come off.

and Da Risin Smoke -- plasti dip aint too friendly with sandpaper-- let alone rubbing the damn thing with ur fingers
sheepdog 08-04-2009 12:09 PM

Sand, use an adhesion promoter/plastic primer, then spray the plasti-dip. Don't sand the plasti-dip after you spray it obviously, sand the plastic before. The "wetter" a coat you put on, the smoother texture you'll get. If you actually read the thread, there are several points where people say that, and that sanding increases durability, but it is no longer a reversable modification.

Mine is super easy to clean, some armorall and a microfiber cloth and it comes perfectly clean, no lint/dust or anything.

I'm almost done with my plastidip and my 04-05 interior conversion, but a hair dried on part. I guess I'll have to peel it off that piece and start again. bleh.
englishguy3012 08-05-2009 08:21 AM

what about something like that new krylon paint that chemically bonds to plastic? do you think that might have better results?
what about something like that new krylon paint that chemically bonds to plastic? do you think that might have better results?
I used that Krylon Fusion in Satin Black on my CRX
I did it about 4 years ago and since its held up great, no chipping pealing,
and even better- it looks as OEM as it can get.
Granted I dont take it out much...but I def recommend that stuff for plastic
sheepdog 08-05-2009 11:25 AM

I've chipped every type of plastic paint on the market on mine. Plasti-dip over a sanded part has held up better than anything for me.

cheers for the input lads.. one for one against.. neone else?
BoostinIX 08-05-2009 12:44 PM

I've scratched my plastidip setup, but when it gets bad, just peel it off and redo :) No sanding means my parts are just fine underneath. Plastidip FTW.
Un0RiGiNaL 08-12-2009 11:36 PM

Bump my quesiton, what do you guys think if i spray my gunmetal duplicolor wheel paint? i can obviously plasti-dip over it, but im gonna try it, i think itll turn out sick

Smoke 08-13-2009 11:42 PM

I'm going to go get some new primer, I dont think I bought the right stuff. I bought Dupli-color Sandable Primer.

I think it's commercial grade primer for car paint, not plastic paint. No wonder i'm having a hard time with some of this.

Also, I can't get my door cards out. I have manual everything and the only thing is setting me back is the window crank. Help?
hookedontronics 08-14-2009 08:44 AM

I'm gonna say this colored plasti dip in the spray can is a bitch compared to black. takes 3 times as long to get it all nice
dangerousatom 08-14-2009 09:01 AM

The trick with the colored is to use the same color primer underneath. Even the black is a bit opaque if used on gray primer.
Smoke 08-15-2009 11:49 PM

I'm doing a project; I painted my door cards and they are very spotty because I held the can at different lengths to the surface.

I'm going to put another layer over it.

Can I just clean it with alcohol as always and just spray over it, or can i add benefit by adding adhesive promotor on it??

What sucks about this stuff is if you get one tiny tear, it can quickly turn the whole project to a nightmare. Luckily you can just peel it all off flawlessly and start over.
Evilchargerfan 08-27-2009 03:25 AM

i just did mine and very satisfied overall

i wanted to ask ... how are the knobs holding up? i noticed they are plasti dipped as well (most people only plasti dip the hvac surrounds and skip the knobs)

also, anyone know where to get the black overlays? i dont wanna spend $125 for black hvac off a limited sti :sadbanana:

(i googled, and found a seller on iwsti (GraphicSTi ), i was hoping there would be an online store/vendor of some sorts)
well i grabbed a can over the weekend and here are the results. while i was waiting for the paint to dry i sanded down the shifter trim and hazard button.

arco 08-27-2009 04:09 AM

so i finally did my center console swap and plasti dipped it. I like it but I'm not sure if it's just right yet. I feel like it needs some sort of semi gloss to it. It might be too flat of a black for me. It loses any class that it had imho. Has anyone tried to use a semi gloss over the plasi dip? I think itll fit in better with my cf vents and door card remotes.

time for the chrome handles now!

I started this thread, and sprayed my knob surrounds. They haven't scratched or anything one bit in the time since. I did sand my pieces though, and used an adhesion promoter and then plasti-dip.

The overlays I think look cheap, you can see the silver in the edges of the clear portions of the overlay which surround the lettering so that the led backlighting shows through. Flatirons Tuning has the set of 3 black limited knobs center pieces for $120 I think, just bite the bullet and get the nicer looking pieces. The Limited ones feel rubberized too, and match the texture of the plasti-dip itself almost perfectly. The overlays feel like a sticker.

everyone for the hvac knobs theres an easy easy solution ive used it on my xbox powers button

buy rubber cement
buy a very small pin point paint brush
and cover up everything not wanted to turn black using the rubber cement and paint brush then once dry
just plasti dip
then pull off rubber cement

voile!! pefect outlines and black knobs

sheepdog 08-28-2009 05:19 PM

Wouldn't the rubbery texture of the plasti-dip make masking/using the rubber cement kind of hard? I know when it gets scratched, it peels in huge pieces. I'm just thinking that you'd have trouble getting clean lines w the rubber cement because of its adhesion to itself.
Smoke 08-28-2009 05:21 PM

How much do you guys sand? Just a scuff or are you sanding a lot?
Bereta 08-29-2009 04:37 AM
