2006 SCCA Solo Nationals thread part 7

Well don't give up the fight. :)

Good luck!

Some of the vets in ETR were telling me about the crappy gas in MO and KS. is there going to be some good gas available on site? I know there's a Sunoco pump there, but can we run that in ST*

I guess it would be simpler to bring 5-10 gals with us.

As I recall, there is at least one pump with Sunoco 100 that is approved for use in stock (and ST*). That's what we used 2 years ago when we drove out there. Mixed it about half and half with the crappy gas to try to approximate what the computer was used to. It's pricey though. At that time, it was around $5 a gallon IIRC and I heard it's around $7/gallon now. Andy Hollis also saw in the Runoffs supps that the track will be selling Sunoco 93 for the SS* classes. So that might be available as well, although none of us have ever seen Sunoco 93 pumps in prior years.

But yes, IMO, it's easier to bring 10 gallons with you.

Edit: KC is faster than Jen once again. Must be why KC is a Class WinnAr and Jen is completely trophyless in 2 appearances at Nationals.
thrdeye 09-12-2006 10:26 AM

thanks kc. i'll keep an eye on it.
ratt_finkel 09-12-2006 10:31 AM
:p  Actually, it's just realistic. I personally think I'm faster this year than I've ever been. For the most part this season, I've actually been able to pull my head out of my *** and DRIVE. I think any given event, I can probably beat one or more of the top drivers in STX. So do I think I had a good chance at trophying? Yes, actually I do. My times have been really close lately to Phil's, McCance's, etc. But win? Hmm, well let me put it this way, the Pick the Winners contest isn't like horse track betting - you don't get more points for picking the long shot. :) And IMO, I'm definitely the long shot. I'd pick a lot of people before I even THOUGHT about me - Billy, Josh, Fitzpatrick, Courtney, Phil, McCance. Jason beats me more often than not, especially recently. Even though my driving stepped up a huge notch this year, Jason has REALLY stepped it up IMO. I'd take Chang and Randy instead of me too. (Sorry West Coast folks, I haven't seen most of you drive, so I just have no comparison.) So, KC, can I stop yet? I'm starting to get an inferiority complex here. ;)

Nope, car's fine. Car's running great, actually.

Finances just took a rather unexpected turn for the worst. Mortgage still has to be paid, and food still has to go on the table. So anything non-essential gets cut. And $350 in National entry fees (and waiver fees), $230 in ProFinale entry fees, and $400 in gas is tops on the list. As far as I could tell, that was basically the bare minimum. Even if we didn't eat out at all, just munched on the free dinners. Even if we skipped the hotel and camped. Still couldn't get around the entry fees and gas. We could save a little $ on gas by driving out there and not towing, but not enough of a difference, especially since the car ran like total crap on that stuff they pass off as gasoline in Missouri and Kansas (and that was with the stock ECU, BEFORE we were tuned for the Sunoco 94 that we always use in it). I even considered just doing the Finale and not Nationals (or vice versa) to save on entry fees, but decided at that point, it isn't worth the trip. So the tires that are already bought go into plastic bags and saved for next year. Phil and I will miss you all, but them's the breaks sometimes. :( But next year you boys better watch out, cuz I'm a comin' for ya! :D

Oh wait, I think Jason said he was going to tell you guys that the reason we weren't going to be there was that Phil broke his foot fighting a bear. So yeah, that's it, forget everything I just said. It was a bear! :D

Oh yeah, while I'm thinking about it, we had a non-smoking room reserved at the Super 8 for Thursday the 21st through Friday the 29th. I think it was a king room for $72/night. Anyone want it? If so, contact me via PM, and I'll coordinate with the Super 8. If I don't hear anything within the next day, I'm just going to cancel the reservation.
Hey Jen, I don't have any spare cash laying around. But I'd be willing to lend both you and Phil my RS. I'll be driving it up there anyway. And I can latch on the race tires if you guys need a car. And you can throw crappy 87 octane in it!

Sad to hear you and Phil won't be there Jen.. catch ya next year!! (Although maybe not in the same class..)
CamaroFS34 09-12-2006 01:40 PM

:( Awwww, Jen! That's too bad, though I totally understand. We're gonna miss you guys, especially at the afterhours entertainment facilities.... And who's gonna make sure Billy drinks for his conage?

Next year, girl... next year....

Nothing is automatic when it comes to accepting national classes. Go there, make your voices heard with reasonable reasons why they should become a national class.

Yeah, I don't understand why they can't go ahead and grant the National Status.

If only 50% of the people that are there this year come next year, that's still 25+

I think the addition of the 350Z would also help the class.

Join the club. And my rain tires are a shared expense with an ESP driver, so I am really, really, really praying it's dry. Otherwise, I may as well stay home. Two rain tires are just as bad as none. :(

here's to hoping you can actually see people as they run. might want to pack binnaculars instead of earplugs!
solo-x 09-12-2006 10:24 PM

i AM exaggerating. i'm not really pissed. i do wish i were second driver though.... running in first heat in a car that relies so heavily on its tires is interesting. unlike ST where the car struggles to work around/within the limitations of the tires, in CM, the car just doesn't work if the tires are cold but becomes a dream once they warm up. ever wonder why everyone hates to see a slick shod car make it past the first rounds at a pro solo? gary godula was several seconds slower per course at the Peru Pro this year on cold tires vs. warm.

anyway, if anyone wants to stop by our grid space before the heat starts and sit on, fart on, breath on, crawl into a sleeping bag naked (with the tires dummy!), or do anything else with our tires that might put even one degree of heat in them, feel free. i just ask that it is nothing too smelly or potential for disqualification.

nate - will be hugging one tire while waiting to strap in

ps. so whats the over under for dq's for tire warm ups/speeding during the 1/4 mile drive to the courses?

Oh my! How does splitting classes up work?? I think that incredibly rediculous! What happens if it rains for one half and not the other??? I don't even know whether to hope for the early run group or late....early I actually remember my lines through the course late I can watch people who actually know how to drive all day
ChrisDP 09-12-2006 11:01 PM

I think that means they are splitting workers FROM those classes... ie big classes might supply more workers than they need for 1 heat. Possibly?

I'm not about to read all 350+ posts, so not sure if this has been posted yet. Be sure to check out the supplemental regulations, some highlights:

$50 utility vehicle fee (any motorized vehicle like sccoters and whatnot)
$150/week for motorhome parking
Beer served during the competition to non-participants
Golf cart rentals are handled by HPT at a substantial increase over previous years.

Mornings suck. Early mornings suck worse. Speaking of which, you ProSoloists did hear that our promised late Friday morning start with a limited number of free practice starts has been replaced with a "normal" 8AM start, right?

No, I'm not kidding. I wish I was.

Karen
motoring 09-13-2006 07:10 PM

There is nothing normal about an 8 am start. We normally start at 9 on the first day.
adhowe70 09-13-2006 07:45 PM

Keith, Nationals has started at 8am every day I've been there, on T,W,R and F. 8am is a normal start. And, on topic, the one ProFinale I did started at 8am also.
JerryLamb 09-13-2006 10:53 PM

Andy, the ProSolo is starting at 8:00 instead of the normal 9:00. They previously published 10:30. On the other hand no-one should be too surprised, we would never be able to finish 275 cars if we started that late, unless the timing equipment worked correctly ;).
adhowe70 09-14-2006 12:50 AM

I could swear that in '03, the ProFinale started at 8am on both days. I remember I couldn't see anything because of the sun being so low on the horizon.

That should have been an "oops, you're screwed" from SCCA. I was initially going to get a flight in on early Friday morning because I teach on Thursday nights, and it's a pain to get a sub. If I'd done that, I would have been f--ked.

It doesn't personally effect me, so I put in a "PC" quote. If it did effect me, I would have put something very different... trust me. The SCCA doesn't understand that people have to make plans months out for these things and by changing something like this make it look more and more like a monkey show...

[Rant ON]And I'm willing to bet I know who made the decision to a "T". This person has been F&^%ing the ProSolo program up for the past few years.... one of the big reasons why my interests have wained in it recently.

Get someone in charge for the ProSolo program, someone WITH a backbone that sticks up for the competitors and knows the problems from the competitor side.

If they could cover my salary now, I'd do it in a heartbeat. (And I wouldn't be afraid to look at different car classing for the cars in ProSolo, specifically... certain AWD cars.) You know... someone that understands the technical aspects of the program itself...[/Rant OFF]
