Video lap of the Nurburgring, STi5 TypeRA Style part 6

johnfelstead 03-11-2003 03:39 PM

Some pictures from Sunday at Donington with the XTR2.

I drove the first 2 sessions to shake the car down and then go for some quick laps. For the first time ever at dono, i lost it and span off. Upto 95% the car is rock solid, finding that final 5% is tricky.

I am pretty sure had the driving position been better i would have saved that, so thats something to work on. The brakes are very poor too, with no feel and a lot of travel, so we will be installing an F3 pedal box into the car, the westfield setup is very poor.

I'll do a proper writeup on the car, sundays driving when i get a bit of time, it's very diferent to driving a normal road car on track.

Here is a little 17Mb video onboard the XTR2 with Craig/Ian at the wheel. I didnt have the cameras setup in time for my runs, shame, that spin was nuts. :D

As always, thanks so much for the new movies. Fantastic soundtracks.
grandpa rex 03-12-2003 07:06 AM

What a great shot of the cars on the city streets. What you call the RS500, is that a Ford Sierra? Or, what we used to call the XR4TI here in the US?
scoobdo 03-12-2003 11:56 AM

Grandpa - Similar in body style but a complete monster in comparison:

The Sierra Cosworth RS500 a much uprated version of the production Sierra 3 door Cosworth. Only 500 of these special vehicles were produced, all modified by Tickford. This Cosworth was announced in July 1987 and was homolgomated in August 1987.

The RS500 was only available in RHD (Right Hand Drive), althought some of these may have found owners on mainland Europe.

The Engine

The main difference to the Sierra 3 door Cosworth was the uprated Cosworth competition engine. It's new features were:

The engine had a thick walled cylinder block to cope with the rigours of the track.
A larger turbocharger and intercooler was fitted.
To the fuel system a second set of injectors was added and uprated fuel pump. Fuel injection used Weber/Marelli equipment.
The oil and cooling system were both also uprated.
All Cosworth engines are fitted with hardened valve seat inserts and can therefore run continuously on unleaded fuel. With ordinary unleaded petrol it is necessary to retard the ignition by 4 Degrees. A power loss of approximately 10 bhp will be experienced after the ignition is retarded. Retarding the ignition may not be necessary if the engine is always run on Super unleaded fuel.

A genuine RS500 Cosworth engine should be labelled in the range YBD0015 to YBD0537 .

Suspension and Chassis

Genuine RS500 shells were labelled GBBE GG 38600 to GBBE GG 39099 . These chassis labels are found under a small flap next to the drivers seat and also mounted in the engine bay. Both should display the same numbers.

Body Work and Interior
The RS500 had only minor external cosmetic differences to its parent the Sierra 3 door Cosworth:

The rear tail gate also had a lower spolier in additional to the upper whale tail.
This Cosworth had discrete RS500 badges on the rear tail gate and front wings.
Re-designed front bumper and spoiler to aid cooling and air flow.
The bonnet louvre air vents were also of a slightly different design.

Available colours where, (with production figures in brackets):

Black (392)
White (52 plus 4 Ford prototypes)
Moonstone Blue (52)

Thanks for answering my questions John, that helps a lot. Also, the music from the XTR2 vids, by chance were they taken from "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly?"
I love the second shot, 3 big black performance cars, Escort Cosworth, RS500 and the XTR2, not an everyday sight.
yet another reason to be jealous of England. why, oh why did we have to rebel :(
johnfelstead 03-12-2003 04:34 PM

That particular RS500 is 520BHP.

Yep, the music is spagetti western, from a fist full or dollars. :D
sleepy-scoobie 03-18-2003 07:33 PM

Doh! can't download them XTR2 videos...

John, a quick aside, what's your opinion on the GDB vs the GC8?

I recall reading a post of yours saying that you would only buy another Impreza if it had DCCD... Suppose they came out with an STi Type RA Spec C in Europe with DCCD; would you buy it? I guess what I'm asking is: why would you want to replace your GC8 with the GDB? (seriously, not a rhetorical question).
johnfelstead 03-19-2003 01:57 PM

Why would i replace the GC8? Well you cant keep a car forever. Dont forget this is my daily driver so it has to be reliable and of a certain standard/Mileage, as i use it for work too.

Would i buy a GDB Impreza? Sure, would i buy a UK spec car, only when hell freezes over. I wont ever buy new in the UK, i cant afford the hit on depreciation you get, it's big money.

The most likely thing is for me to keep my current car for another 12 months or so and then look to buy an STi8 TypeRA Spec C Japanese sourced car. I would love the UK market to get the DCCD but i just cant see that happening under the current arangements. Why would Subaru UK put a higher spec into the car, if they are getting away with selling a cheaper to produce car at top $? And then getting to charge them $3000 more to get the prodrive power upgrade that takes it up to japanese power levels?

The market wouldnt stand an increase in price, infact it has dropped $5000 on the STi8 TypeUK compared to the Prodrive STi7 TypeUK version, so Subaru UK wont want even more of a loss of their profits (which are huge).

The UK market is very unlike the USA, we dont have the mass marketing you have behind the new EVO to combat and on the whole people are happy with what they get in the UK spec car, they havent a clue what they are missing out on. What we really need is for Ford to bring out the Focus Cosworth AWD car that i know is in development. That has some very trick transmision on it, Subaru UK would then be forced to react or lose market share IMHO.

I know for a fact IM (subaru UK importers) hate scoobynet because it's educating the masses about what they should be getting and it's promoting the real top spec cars such as my own, which are grey imports. They will hold onto their cash cow as long as they can.

So for me, no chance i will never buy a UK spec car, they are not good value for money. I'll stick with Japanese spec DCCD equiped STi's. They are no harder to run than a UK car and are a lot better value for money, even forgeting the spec diferences.

If, and thats a huge IF, Subaru did bring the DCCD equiped STi to the European market, i may decide to buy one in Belgium, as they are usually $9000 cheaper for an identical spec brand new car, i kid you not! You have to be mad (or have too much money) to buy a new Subaru in the UK IMHO. Now that the European parliament has made it law you must supply a two year factory waranty to sell any car in Europe, (and FHI have decided to give a 3 year factory waranty) that has removed even more so the need to buy UK, as the UK waranty used to be 1 year factory, 2 years IM(subaru importer).

I had a drive of an STi8 Type UK PPP the other week, 300BHP prodrive upgrade spec and it felt pretty good on the power front. A huge leap forward over the STi7, which i thought sucked ass, even in japanese spec. I think they have worked hard on that car to make it what it should have been. I'll reserve judgement, but based on my drive it's got good potential. (it tramlined/bumpsteered all over the place though, but it hasnt had a proper geometry setup yet, it can only get better  )
scoobdo 03-19-2003 03:52 PM

John,
Are you going to be attending TOTB this year?
Looks like things are really hotting up I've been browsing the RS, Lancer and GTR forums and theres some tough talk being spoken!!
Should be a very interesting day :)
Cheers,
-Nik.
johnfelstead 03-19-2003 05:04 PM

Yes, i will be at the Ten of the best day this year. I am one of two people picking the Subaru entrants this year actually. :D:lol:

I have been asked to drive 2 cars for the owners in the competition, both highly modified 22B's. I'll have my own car on standby should we hit any problems with either of those.

The level of tune of some of the cars is impresive, much higher spec than last year.
scoobdo 03-19-2003 08:49 PM

Fantastic I hope you enjoy driving the 22B's will you be doing any test drives to get yourself comfortable with the cars before hand?

And we/I will be expecting full coverage of events that take place and expect videos and pictures of course :D if you have time that is if your not to busy enjoying yourself ;) bugger i can't be there but I get sod all vacation out here

Forgot to mention is there a thread on Scoobynet for TOTB I can't seem to find anything on it
johnfelstead 03-20-2003 12:56 PM

Yes, i should be doing some "testing" before the event proper. I need to set the cars up suspension wise and get used to what a 500BHP 2.5 22B can do. Should be very interesting stuff.

Of course i will keep you guys updated on how things work out, and what cars are running, plus of course get some video filming done.

The thread for this isn't on scoobynet, it's on 22B.COM
EJ20K 03-20-2003 10:29 PM

:D
johnfelstead 03-21-2003 07:05 AM

oops, sorry, i forgot. :o

I am busy building a website at the moment that will document all my various messing about in cars, on rallies etc stuff so time is a bit tight. I'll get this done though. :D

The website will allow me to keep all my pictures online, rather than deleting them or them being lost as a thread dies. It's a lot of work but it's starting to take shape now. Guess the URL?
Carbon 03-21-2003 02:09 PM

I dont think Jamie has anything to worry about.

Very early days, the plan is to get the rally pictures up first, then move on to the more technical subjects and Nurburgring trips.

So far i have Monte Carlo 2002 uploaded, half way through Monte Carlo 2003, hopefully have that finished today. Then it will be Catalunya, NetworkQ.....

It's a lot of work, but rewarding to see the site taking shape, check back every so often for new updates. :)

Both Monte Carlo's are now up.
fengshui-fu 03-24-2003 08:28 AM

Dude! Nice site. Can't wait to see it when its all complete. Simple layout, very clean. I also can't wait for the nurburgring writeup and tips, even though I'll probably never get to drive on that circuit. We have roads like that over here in the New England region, but they are all public, and getting stuck behind some granny in a shoebox is enough to zap the excitement right out of you

keep us posted.

Spa GP Circuit visited

Hi Guys,

Just returned from a rather manic few days in Europe. I spent one day driving the 'ring which i didnt get any footage from, then spent the next day driving the Spa GP circuit.

The day at Spa was suposed to be a trackday, it turned out to be a test day with lots of European touring car BMW's, Mini CooperS racers, Historics like TR4's plus some amazing racers like a 5 litre V8 MCoupe racer.

I shared the pit garage with a Formula3 team. Not your normal trackday. :D

I have uploaded 4 videos, one from outside the car at the hairpin, two onboard facing forward/back plus a few laps from my front bumper.

Spa is an awesome track, there isnt a boring corner on the circuit. I was surprised how easy it was to learn though, i had it pretty sussed out in 3 laps and then spent the day terorising the Touring car racers. I was driving on my road tyres as usual but managed to give the racers on slicks a good run for their money, very funny stuff.

Hope you enjoy the vids, they are on my slow server right now, so hopefully the usual suspects ;) can help me out and host them for me. :D

Changes to the car for this trip were to replace the diff and gearbox oil with some Redline Heavy Shockproof. This worked really well and the gearchanged stayed silky smooth even after a long run, before i was feeling it get tighter as the temps rose. Well worth the expense. I also replaced the standard Anti-Roll Bars with some whiteline 22mm units front/rear and installed some solid drop links at the rear, i used the stock STi drop links up front. This made a big diference to roll control, much better and kept a nice balance.
makofoto 04-05-2003 11:44 AM

I heard that the Subaru WRC cars use this in their gearbox:

I very much doubt that.

I believe you mean the US subaru rally team :)
makofoto 04-05-2003 01:30 PM

Current issue of Turbo & High-Tech Performance magazine has an article on the WRX 5 speed gear box ... and says that the "World Rallye Championship Subaru Team" uses Neo Synthetic Lubes ... what can I say .... :-)

"Believe nothing you hear and only half of what you see" :-(
johnfelstead 04-05-2003 02:09 PM

My STi uses Redline Heavy Shockproof gearbox and diff oil and Castrol RS 10/60 engine oil. Fuel is from the nearest petrol station selling 98RON Super Unleaded into which i use 75ml of Nitrous Race Formula Octane Booster. Water for the IC sprays comes from the nearest tap

Do you like the video?:disco:

P.S they use Motul oils and lubricants at SWRT. ;)
makofoto 04-05-2003 02:33 PM

Too slow to download at the moment ...waiting until later ... can't WAIT! :-)

Most Octane boosters are mainly Toluene (114 octane) or Xylene. Toluene was the main component of the F1 cars when they were Turbo'ed. But the amount in a little can of booster is pretty insignificant. Do you KNOW if the booster that you mention has something more signficant in it?

Since our premium gasoline here is Southern CA is so poor ... 91 octane .... I add two gallons of Toluene ($6/ gallon at my local ICI Dulux Paint Center) ... to the 10 gallons of 91 octane that I typically gas up with. This gives me 94+ octane. I usually also add some ATF and Kerosen/mineral spirits for the cleaning and lube properties that they have.

I believe this 94+ octane mixture definitely helps my '03 WRX Wgn ... which now has a Stromung exhaust system (downpipe back) and will get a APS up-pipe next week ... and then a ECU re-map.

When I was up at the Sears Point race track a while ago ... I noticed that in the paddock they had gas pumps offering 115, 118 and 120 octane gasolline! Wow! I wonder what's in those fuels ... who uses them?

Are these types of fuels available and used in Europe (for racing/rallying)? When my buddy was racing Formula Vees in Germany in the '70's we used 105 (euro) octane aviation fuel.
johnfelstead 04-05-2003 02:46 PM

Your octane is not the same as ours, we use RON, you use PON so the numbers dont match. Lets not get into octane boosters, it's a huge subject on its own.
PJ2.5RS 04-05-2003 04:25 PM

Nice car! You coudn't make a zip file out of that and post it again, for some of us 'non-cable modem people' could ya??...
wrxinfx 04-05-2003 04:28 PM

vids

gimme a day or two, I'll pull them down, and post them on my server that's should be plenty fast (I host most of JF's vids). I'll try to compress one of them as well for those of you who are "bandwidth challenged".

johnfelstead 04-05-2003 04:32 PM

Hi Casey, thanks mate. :D
makofoto 04-07-2003 12:25 PM

Brilliant video's from Spa ... a lot more twisty bits then when I was last there in the '70's! :-(

What was that winged Silver car that managed to blast by you in the in-camera forward facing video ....

Too bad there was so much traffic ... :-(

When we visited Spa in the early seventies to see the 24 Hour Touring Car race ... we got waved onto the track going the WRONG direction ... not our fault ... the, I guess, parking marshall directed us that way ... as we approched the pits ... we all of a sudden realizied that a morning warm up session was about to start ... our only escape route ... dive into the pits ... in the wrong direction. Well it ended up being great ... since we were now in the paddock ... in our VW Stationwagon! All is well that (thankfully) ends well!
afpdl 04-23-2003 05:55 AM

subyguy2 04-23-2003 02:45 PM

Have you ever thought about making your way over the Eastern US and trying some of our tracks? I saw an Elise at VIR 3 weeks ago, registered in the UK, apparently he was over here for buisness. I know we dont have the ring, or many of the wonderful historic tracks in Europe, though here on the east coast, we have Road Atlanta, VIR, Watkins Glen, and so on...;)

FYI, if you don't know:
You could try the 76 unleaded 100 that is available from some So. Cal. stations at around $6/Gal. There is also a station in Canoga Park (Vanowen and DeSoto) that sells Trick 101 unleaded for $4/Gal. Tends to make my RS run a bit rich, but boy, does it run SMOOTH! :)

I'd be pretty hesitant to add a lot of solvent to the gas, as this could keep the cyl. walls free of oil. :(
makofoto 04-23-2003 11:34 PM

The 2 gallons of 114 octane toluene work out to be cheaper the adding 5/6 gallons of 100 octane ... I also add some kersone for lubricant and auto trans fluid as a cleaner.

Here is more info on using toluene (see the "formula" part way down the page):

The silver car was a silouette racing M coupe, fitted with the rather powerfull V8, that car was very fast. The day was used by some serious race teams for testing. I really enjoyed the traffic, especially playing with the race cars on slicks.

I lived in Atlanta back in the early 90's so know Road Atlanta (plus that little 1/4 mile oval nearby) quite well. Stunning circuit, it reminds me of Oulton Park, my local circuit.

You have some great circuits over there, laguna seca is one of my favourites and i have lots of video footage of most of the circuits used during the Can Am days.

I would love to get over and drive there, find me a job and its a deal. :D

Glad you liked the vids 4or2wheels, it was a lot of fun making them. :D

I've been adding toluene/kersone/transmission fluid mix for about 7,000 miles, 2 gallons per tank full ... usually to around 11 gallons of 91 octane.

Next week I should have my remapped chip which should really take advantage of the 94 octane resulting mix ... probably only worth about 5 hp ...

Ahh, much better, Casey is the man!

Its so incredible watching that M3 Coupe just blast by you. So that is what horsepower is all about!:disco: You looked downright ordinary Mr. Felstead!:D
johnfelstead 04-28-2003 04:16 PM

But i am ordinary, anyone can do what i do. :D

(makes note to fit nitrous :D)
Arnie 04-29-2003 01:59 AM

:p :D It was neat seeing that car twitch a bit under throttle a couple of turns after he passed you. Is that due to insane power or being a bit unbalanced at that point?
grandpa rex 04-29-2003 10:00 AM

Now that the video is on a proper server, I've been able to download it. John: in one word - sensational. My favorite car was the old VW beetle with the huge wing . That m coupe was smoking! I think it's the first time I've seen anyone pass you. Thanks for the vicarious thrills.
johnfelstead 05-06-2003 05:42 PM

i dont know what sort of power that M-Coupe was running, but it was seriously fast. The car was a spaceframe special with a V8 in front that made the whole pits area vibrate, one hell of a racecar.

The most fun for me was the TR4, watching how a once state of the art racer on slicks was anialated by a more modern road car thanks to technology advances. Fun stuff. :D
johnfelstead 05-07-2003 02:08 PM

Here is another of the Spa videos on the faster server. This one is from the front bumper using the bullet camera and has some fun laps playing with some of the race cars.

John,
Hows the preparation for TOTB going I've been following the chat or rather friendly banter on the 22B forum!
Just curious as to how its all going?
Theres alot of tough talk out there on the BBS' gutted I can't make it back home but I have a couple of buddies making the trip up from London to report back to me!
Cheers.
johnfelstead 05-07-2003 04:05 PM

i havnt kept up with it this last week or so as i am in the USA right now, as far as i know everything is still going to plan and i should have a couple of very quick 22B's to play with.

There is no way we will beat the Skylines on top speed, but we should be able to compete well in the 1/4 mile and handling course with the cars at our disposal.
grandpa rex 05-08-2003 07:36 AM

hey John, if you're near Boston, I'd be honored to buy you a beer.
HoRo1 05-08-2003 11:22 AM

Great video, as always. It even played on my HP linux system at work after laying an egg on my Mac at home! Spa has always been my favourite.

I see that you like Laguna Seca. I'm time trialing and probably racing there next weekend (May 17+18) and plan on having some in-car video up in this forum sometime the following week. Keep your eyes peeled!

john, were you on your new 18's with the T1-s's in Spa?

Hi Grandpa ;) i am in Seattle area whilst over, i came over to help Jamie with the Rally down at Rim and visit for a while. I am currently hiding indoors though, the sun in CA chewed me up and spat me out, i'll be more careful next time. Thanks for the offer though, if i was near i would have taken you up on that. :)

I was driving on my 17" wheels and SO2's at Spa, the 18's are my road set so i am hoping they last a little while. (saying that i did half a day at donington on them after the XTR2 engine mounts broke, i just couldnt resist. )

Enjoy Laguna Seca, thats an awesome racetrack.
