Co-driver Park dies in accident part 2

daveB 09-19-2005 12:31 AM
Hmm, looks like Speed is going to not mention it until it happens.

I'm not sure how they would handle it, I'm not sure this is the best way :(
They handled it appropriately (i feel) and the moment of silence on the podium was a nice touch. :(

They didn't show any stages from the final day. I thought it was appropriate.
He is a racer, yes it will affect him when he is out of the car, but when he gets back in he will be fine.
Uh, "fine" is hardly the word I would use here... Rally is different than just "racing". They work with each other and are around each other as much as their families.

Condolences to all involved.
MattNJ2.8 09-19-2005 12:41 AM

:( jeez.
Redleader 09-19-2005 12:58 AM

My condolences to his wife and children...

So sad. Godspeed, Michael. My thoughts are with his family and friends. :(
409Industries 09-19-2005 01:06 AM

i was just watching WRC on my tivo... i didnt know how they were going to end 3 stages in like 5 minutes... then i was shocked.

that totally sucks. I feel terrible for his family. its a damn sad time in WRC. I respect the fact that they called the rally and didnt keep running, etc.
datageek 09-19-2005 02:02 AM

Words fail me... My thoughts are with his family and Markko.
cwareing 09-19-2005 02:04 AM

A very sad day for the teams, families, the WRC and for motorsport as a whole. A very respected and experienced co-driver, I'm sure he will be greatly missed.

RIP Michael Park
WRXedUSA 09-19-2005 02:07 AM

Word is that Peugeot may pull out for the remainder of the year and call their WRC outings early.

I don't bame them. I couldnt get back into the car.

It's been some time now, and I'm still in shock.

I think quiting the season wouldnt be right. Beef died what he loved doing .... I dont think he would want his team to just quit :(

those last minutes of watching WRC was shocking. I really hate to see something like this happen to such a nice guy.

You do realize PSA is done after 2005 right? The WRC is clinched, 4 more rallies to go, 2 being long hauls. Their only option would be to find a replacement crew, and I don't, and I'm sure they don't think that is right at this time considering Japan is only 8 days away.

We'll see I guess.
CirrusWRX 09-19-2005 09:55 AM

It's such a tragedy and such a tough call on so many points
... can Markko get his head back into it for the remainder of the season?
... is it fair to Park's family to continue racing?
... would Park have wished his team continue on if something like this happened?
... does Peug stand to gain much by continuing? By not continuing?

Either way, it's a sad sad thing that is going to take a while for it to sink in. Nobody ever claimed racing was a safe job, but unlike many of us, he got to go doing what he loved.
tbert 09-19-2005 10:20 AM

Man. Horrible news. Rest in peace Beef. You will be missed.

When was the last time a driver or co-driver killed in the WRC? Anyone since the Group B days?
bullseye17 09-19-2005 10:41 AM

Very sad day indeed. RIP Beef...

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

Nothing to say. A sad day in motorsports.

This is so sad. And to think I almost got a TiVO last week, but didn't. Will they replay this?

-Matt
artkevin 09-19-2005 12:30 PM

They didn't show much at all. The whole rally was run as normal and they just didn't cover day 3 at all. They just showed an empty motor park and the drivers all on the podium in a moment of silence. I think Speed handled it very well.
I didn't see Marko in the shots. I hope he is doing as well as he can.
MattDell 09-19-2005 02:43 PM

Well I want to see the rest of the rally, as well.

yeah speed did a good job keeping it as tasteful as they could in such an emotional time. I dont remember seeing gronholm too much in the ending segment of speed's coverage. seeing all the cars silent, lined up and empty crew areas was very sad.
Acostafan 09-19-2005 03:16 PM

That's awful. Definitely a class move on Loeb's part too....
Smelli Bugatti 09-19-2005 04:50 PM

Just how did he get the name "Beef" ?

Pug should continue, this is not the way you go out. He knew the dangers and accepted them. Everyone involved knows. There is an expression in rally "You go, no matter what".

From the still shots it looks like Marko just got loose and "kissed" the tree but 100% of the force on Park's door. Check out extraducksauce's link.
I agree with you on the lack of coverage but the question has to be asked of how much do we the public need to see. I am cool with not seeing it as long as the FIA is learning lessons. It doesn't feel like a "cover up" just respect which I'm all for.
Pakin 09-19-2005 06:54 PM

How tragic. My thoughts go out to Park's loved ones :(

Another truly sad day in sports. "Beef" will surely be missed.

R.I.P. Michael Park

Not to sound like I'm spreading propaganda. At least he died doing something he loved and it was quick.
Smelli Bugatti 09-20-2005 11:37 AM

Great post Subie Gal. That is something Speed TV should have said. The viewer does not need graphic details and photos but the do need some kind of closure.
WRXPRESS 09-20-2005 12:01 PM

I was in total shock when I heard about this. Marko must feel horrible.
My condolences go out to his family, team & friends...

damn this sucks...

Nice post Jamie...well said.
Styley1 09-20-2005 12:31 PM

I have been purposefully staying out of WRC and motorsports forums until I had a chance to watch the rally myself. Sadly, I watched it today and am still in disbelief.

So many have said it before, but my condolences to the Park family, Markko, Peugeot, and the other WRC teams.

A few articles I have read have commented on Markko's emotional state. I hope he can pull himself through this tragic event, find closure, and look to the future.

Martin to miss Rally of Japan after fatal crash
Tue Sep 20, 2005 6:22 PM BST16

LONDON (Reuters) - Peugeot's Markko Martin will miss the Rally of Japan after the crash that killed his co-driver Michael Park in Britain at the weekend.

"Martin's presence there is totally unthinkable," the Eurosport website quoted Peugeot team boss Jean-Pierre Nicolas as saying on Tuesday. "What's happened is still too raw."

Estonian Martin was uninjured after his car left the road and hit a tree on the passenger side in South Wales on Sunday's 15th stage of the Rally of Britain. Peugeot said Briton Park, 39, died instantly.

Nicolas said Martin remembered nothing of the accident.

"Markko has been affected very much psychologically," said Nicolas, who explained that Martin had been to see his co-driver's widow.

"He also wanted to see the car and go back to the scene of the accident to try and understand what happened," said Nicolas. "He wants to know."

Peugeot have yet to confirm their participation in Japan, the next rally from September 30 to October 2, and have asked the governing FIA for more time to make a decision.

Citroen's world champion Sebastien Loeb, who deliberately took time penalties on Sunday to avoid winning the race and his second title in such circumstances, said the sport needed to do more to increase safety.

"The cars are well designed, solid, but one can see that this is not sufficient," he said on his website. "There is always a compromise between safety and weight.

"One can ask whether the cars haven't become too powerful and too sophisticated. For us, they are very easy to take to the limit. And to be in front, you are on the limit all the time...the speeds have perhaps become too high.

"You will never avoid deaths in motorsport," Loeb added. "But we must still do more.

"If we have to add 30 kilos to the roof because it makes it safer, then we should do it, impose it on everyone and everyone would be in agreement," he said. "There are surely things to find, to optimise, to improve teams' safety."

No ****ing way :( :(.

RIP Michael Park. It's such a sad thing.

And Martin gets my thoughts and hopes as well. I can't even imagine what he's going through right now. I wouldn't be suprised if he didn't come back for at least 5 years, and even then, he'd probably play it safe.

Keep the rubber side down and try and be as safe as possible out there guys. I don't like seeing na dreading these RIP threads, as they put a bad cap on the end of my day :(.

Wow, I remember laughing so hard watching that last year. Definitely worth watching again. Shows how much he loved what he did. :(

I heard about this Sunday morning at the drivers meeting at Cog. Hearing the news right before heading off to go co-drive myself was a bit of a sobering thought. I am still speachless about it. I have no idea what to say or to think about it. Its still way too sudden and shocking. :(

RIP Michael :(
Habu 09-21-2005 02:24 AM

When I was in Mexico last year, I remember meeting and talking to Michael for a while just minutes after arriving from his win with Markko. Dwon to earth guy, humble even after just arriving with a fresh WRC win. I was with Jon Dillon and he asked if I'd take a picture of him with Michael, codriver to codriver...so I did, and this is how I remember him:

I think "Beef" came from the fact that he is small bodied, sort of a sarcastic nickname...

I read that somewhere....

Very sad.....
Loeb talks as if there has been a rash of deadly crashes. This was the first fatal accident in 25 years ( I read on a website ).
The website you read is somewhat inaccurate... The last fatality on a WRC event was Possum Bourne's co-driver, Rodger Freeth, in Australia in 1993. The most recent driver fatality on a WRC round was Henri Toivonen in 1986. Statistically speaking, I suppose it's not a bad record. Though the statistics don't make it hurt any less right now.

Those are just fatalities at the WRC level. World-wide I have heard of at least two or three fatalities a year every year since I started following the sport (in 2003). Just this past weekend a codriver was killed in Finland as well. It does make me wonder if there isn't more that could be done to improve safety in the sport.

I had not seen that clip before, but I have watched it a few times over the past few days, and my reaction is always:

1. I laugh at Michael.
2. I smile because I see two people having fun working together and doing what they love.
3. I am amazed at both for being able to drive/navigate so effortlessly.
4. I am saddened for Markko, who clearly lost a great and funny co-driver.
5. I am saddened to realize that line between the fun shown here and the loss at Rally GB is so thin, especially for such "extreme sports" such as rallying.

Rally On, Michael.

SDC
Smelli Bugatti 09-23-2005 07:16 PM

The site did mention Henri Toivonen as the last fatality. I should have checked my facts. They said 19 years ago. Still a very long time for such a dangerous sport. I dont know why they did not include Freeth. I do not know the details of his crash. That was still some 10 years ago.
The WRC has crashes all the time and have done a great job with safety. It doesnt make me feel any better about "Beef" but Loeb may have some judgement impared by the tradegy.

News like this makes me realize how good I have it. We recently lost everything we have due to hurricane katrina. All my family and friends made it through alive and I am so thankful for that. I feel so much for the family and friends of Mr. Park. Our losses are so insignificant when compared to the loss of life.

Our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Mr. Park.
