Evilchargerfan 11-07-2008 04:17 AM

smart idea
sc00byr3x 11-10-2008 02:28 AM

I did this 2 times on my 08. 1st time, the lip sagged on the rear near the wheels. No problem taking it off. Then 2nd time, I used gasoline to prep the bumper to 3M tape it on. Lip developed a "dry spot tear". I tried removing it but the tape was STUCK to the bumper and using an eraser pad, I got the tape off but melted some paint off.

I don't mind doing it again, but I'm reluctant to, since the tape just held on TOO much. Anyone do this with screws ONLY? Or is there a way to get the tape off quicker? I used an eraser pad with my drill and a blow dryer and a heat gun. Still wouldn't take the tape off until i used the pad down to the paint.
Clusk 11-20-2008 10:00 AM

Try doing it like you are taking the badges off... a little WD-40 and hair dryer with some dental floss and then clean up with goo gone....
nasiocanII 11-20-2008 01:21 PM

This is the same idea I had .
sc00byr3x 11-20-2008 06:27 PM

believe me, I know about the WD-40 and floss trick. The problem is the tape was REALLY stuck to the bumper itself. I tried wd-40 as well. Didn't work. floss wouldn't fit between the tape and bumper anyways. I just cut the lip off with a knife and then worked for 2 hours with the eraser pad and heat gun to get the tape off. my poor bumper tho...

Anyone chime in on using ONLY screws for the lip?

I use regular machine screws on my diy lip and it works fine and has for 2 years.
SA2USA 01-01-2009 01:16 PM

i loved my diy lip.

sc00byr3x 01-03-2009 02:37 PM

why am I the only one that had to go through 3 DIY lips in one summer? They keep getting ripped up or dry up? will try a screw only approach this summer.
sc00byr3x 01-05-2009 03:19 AM

the lip material I used was frost king garage door stuff. it was semi-foamy like most of the people here. Should I be looking at getting a hard rubber type instead?
shirekid2.5i 01-06-2009 01:50 PM

i just did my 07 about two weeks ago, its held through snow, wet roads, and 80+ no the highway....3m tape and a buncha screws....pics soon
lastsnare 01-06-2009 03:27 PM

i did mine over the summer, the garage door seal material was pretty squishy but it seems to work well. i used 3m double sided outdoor tape (red backing and grey color incase you see it). it only loosened up slightly over the summer, i applied the tape on a nice dry day and made sure the plastic where i was sticking it on was nice and clean, free of dust/dirt. it has lasted through all of the snow and slush we have had here in buffalo so far and no signs of loosening up yet. i had to snow plow through some drifts once or twice too, seems to be holding pretty well, i didn't use any screws and my car is lowered on cobb springs. seems to be good so far !
mine is an 04 wrx sedan
sc00byr3x 01-06-2009 04:32 PM

a fellow buffalonian! I guess I just have bad luck with my DIY lips. I used tape as well, but if you read earlier, the tape was a pain in the arse to take off. I may go again with an all screw approach this spring. lets see...
lastsnare 01-06-2009 04:41 PM

go buffalo ! lol =)
i put the tape on in little pieces about 2 or 3 inches long (mostly because i bought one roll and didn't want to run out) and i tried not to stretch the rubber garage door seal material so as not to put any tension on it. i am actually surprised that it has stuck this long...the tape reminds me of some stuff we used to use when i worked at circuit city to glue security alarms onto certain merchandise. if you got it to stick initially and compressed it (press together pieces really hard for a few seconds) it would really really turn to cement and hold amazingly well. the tape initially might peel off easily if you didn't put a lot of pressure on it, but if you did it was pretty impressive how much holding power it had
sc00byr3x 01-07-2009 05:40 PM

TOO much power.
mike314 02-13-2009 08:44 PM

these look awesome!
sc00byr3x 02-15-2009 03:56 PM

Here's my new plan - prepping the surface with only a semi-damp alcohol rag. 3m double sided tape - and..... black paper clamps. something temp till I save up for a v-limited on my 08
sc00byr3x 04-27-2009 01:45 PM

Gonna do my 3rd DIY lip today. Bought the usual materials. And no, I will NOT prep with gas. Got 12 large binder clips. The black ones with the silver grips. Will use those and remove the silver grips. Just hope it doesn't stick out below the lip itself. pics will come if it turns out good.
sc00byr3x 04-27-2009 05:02 PM

done! I took more time to tape it on. The binder clips were too small since the bumper plastic is "long" I have 4 of them on the sides near the wheel well. Will do the straight washer/screw method later on when I have access to a cordless drill (college apartment 3rd floor and no exterior outlets).

SUBYAWD85 05-04-2009 03:12 PM

I did my lip and now I feel like my car is cheaper. It's really hard to be confident when you are driving and you know your little rubber buddy on the front is probably bending in from the wind resistance. The rubber seal feels like it should be reinforced to make any REAL difference, (as far as reducing the amount of airflow under the car or improving any aerodynamics of the vehicle) it is too floppy and weak. V-limited replica is on order to replace my garage seal bumper lip. End result = 1.) Looks cool.. sorta.. in a picture maybe 2.)Doesn't accomplish the same effect a real lip would 3.) Works great if you are going for looks, want a slightly lower profile, and don't wanna crack your lip. 4.) All in all, good for some and not for others. To each his own.
sc00byr3x 05-04-2009 03:53 PM

I noticed you have an 2007 model. The hawkeyes are the toughest to put the lip on, due to the curves of the bumper. The diy looks best on the bugeyes and blobeyes. Then it looks pretty good on the 08+ if done right. I know the feeling about the lip bending and stuff. I need to screw mine on, cuz its only taped on now and I worry if it will fall off ha. But when driving, a friend told me that my lip doesnt move as much. If you look at the pics on this thread of moving cars, the lip doesn't seem to be flapping around or folding back.

It's just something temporary until I save up for a replica v-lim

Exactly my thoughts, I did screw mine in as well, I also used strips of sheet metal and washers to give it an even seal all the way around. I mean, it doesn't "look" bad.. it's just pointless to me.. I found a guy on ebay with a good rep and was a power seller, selling the replicas for $100, so I'm just gonna order mine. Too bad I wasted about 2 hours on my rubber lip  (it was a fun and interesting learning experience though. I dont like to talk bad on something I haven't personally tried yet like some people ) It's one of those things where you have this really nice car and you only want the best for it.. yet you are trying to save money... But once you put something that is a piece of crap on your car.. your car becomes a piece of crap IMO

Replica ftw :D
SUBYAWD85 05-04-2009 07:34 PM

Oh and btw, your car does look very nice! One of the more cleaner 08's I've seen. Keep it up!
sc00byr3x 05-05-2009 07:19 PM

thanks! :) i plan on getting a real v-lim after i do my sti or crawford spoiler.
I'd like to know too. :)
The cross section of the neoprene is rather thick, i.e. it doesn't look like a flat "L" shape. I would expect some deformation, but probably not enough to completely fold itself. Had the material been wider (say, 2 inches or more), it would probably need reinforcement.

I make no claims either way. :)
garage door sealer lips work very well and ive been up to about 120 and they havent deformed at all:D
2point0 06-14-2009 02:21 PM

I just made the "v2" DIY lip yesterday and I used some thin aluminum strips to span two screws each on the underside. I did this 1) to keep a nice even form (no bumps/ridges) and 2) to help keep the thing from pulling away at the double-sided tape. I lined the whole thing with double-sided duct tape, then screwed in underneath. When my roommate gets home later, I'll maybe have him pace me on the freeway and look to see if it bends much.

If you're dremeling and/or drilling the CF, make sure you have a particle mask on...we have to do it at work periodically, and it's nasty stuff to have in your lungs.

I think it looks pretty nice across the front, but not along the sides because it doesn't take the curve well.

Something I might try later is to tape the other side to the car and just have it go across the front. Sort of like that was done with the Acura earlier in the thread. It would probably be hardly noticeable though.

And here it is.

Anyone here willing to send me their left over package of the aforementioned Frost King garage door sealant.... obviously, with enough left-over to complete the job.

I can Paypal you a few bucks.... Home Depot here in Canada doesn't carry the stuff.

Shipping to Toronto shouldn't be more than ~$10.
4Ring Jelly 07-02-2009 07:56 PM

They didnt sell Frost King brand at any of the Home Depots or Lowes I went to, so I just used the "M-D" brand stuff. Looks and seems to be the exact same thing but different brand.

Do they sell that up there?
NOboostSUBIE 08-09-2009 09:23 PM

Finally gave this a shot this afternoon...
After reading numerous threads on several forums over the past few years, I have always wondered how this would work out on my bugeye. Today I gave it a shot. While this writeup has been covered countless times, it can't hurt for me show how I did mine, and I have pics!
Materials Used:
Frost Garage Door Sealer
3M Automotove Tape - Grey with Red backing
Self-Tapping screws
Power Drill
Large Washers
Rubbing Alcohol

Steps Taken:
1) Measure out the material on bumper and use painters tape to hold it while making the marks
2) Cut the garage door sealant to lenght.
3) Prep BOTH the bumper and sealant with rubbing alcohol to removed wax and oils
4) Apply 3M to bumper
5) Peel off backing and carefuly apply the lip (this is done best with another person to help you keep the lip off the garage floor)
5) Now that the lip is on, press firmly to make sure the tape adheres
6) I used 8 screws and washers, and carefully sunk them though the lip, 3M tape, and into the bumper skin.
7) Check for sagging and you're all set.

Pics of the process......

here are my contributions.. i added a little bottom white piece from home depot.. i dno what its called but its by frost king.. i guess its a piece for under the garage door as well.. its made of nylon and plastic..it gives the garage door seal a little sturdiness.. oh and its a DIY grille from an 08 grille.. that took forever (still needs sanding and touch up paint).. I like the way your DIY front lip looks. Did you screw it in at all or just use 3M double side tape? Is it staying on there pretty good? I want to do this on my bugeye but dont really want to screw a bunch of holes into my bumper.

i have the same exact question! and is the brand everyones using frost king? and 2.25 correct? and what kind of 3m tape should i be using?
valkrie hunter 11-30-2009 01:38 AM

i was going to do this, but decided against it for now... but i think the best tape would be the 3M heavy duty tape (red tape with gray foam) which holds like.. 5lbs or something like that. you can find that tape at home depot or lowes

yo14jman 04-09-2010 04:09 PM

IMO this mod is a bit odd considering they have replicas on Ebay for like $60 shipped. I happen to have one and it wishstands a lot of beating & it doesn't look ghetto.
2point0 04-09-2010 05:52 PM

Most of those cost a bunch to ship and may still be $100 or so for a ghetto replica when you could have a $10 ghetto rubber lip instead.

I would love a JNA lip because I've seen the beating those things can take, but the fact is my driveway makes me scrape as it sits now and I'll be putting STi splitters on soon. The rubber is protecting the bottom of the bumper but a lip would get hammered.
Club SiL 04-09-2010 06:25 PM

I used the factory holes and made 2 or 3 extra holes, I used nice big washer so the "foam" wouldnt rip, Looked good and I might thrown one under my next lip as the v6 lip I have cracked during some snow fun. And I'm going just over 60mph and it still looks like it keeps the general shape...
