I used a 1/4" drill bit and #10 screws(the home depot guy picked it out for me)
I decided to get big spacers to make it hold better.
As for the two sealer options, i personally like the one i have(the top one of yours) because it has more of a rough look to it than a shiney fake rubber.

will this stuff last going 100mph and long drives??

in a word, yes.
| AxlxA | 11-19-2007 10:34 PM |
as shown above, my under side with the nuts/bolts pattern was NOT ENOUGH!!!!!
I drove with a friend on some country back roads going pretty fast.... 100mph+ for sure.... and my lip is sagging everywhere I didn't put a bolt in. So tonight I spent another hour reinforcing that stuff with some metal sheets like mechie3 had shown above. I hope it works!!!!
Make sure you put enough bolts even in the straight section, one every 3-4 inch would be good. On the corners, put one every 2 inches!!!
Don't drive too fast.... besides, 100mph? isn't that over the speed limit?

a little tip for all you rocking the diy lip, I made some thin (1/16) aluminum supports to keep the edges from folding under the corners of the bumper. I just jot some flat aluminum and bent it into shape and screwed it onto the corners to keep the profile of the lip consistant thru out the entire bumper. Just a tip for you perfectioninsts (sp? haha).
this is probably a kinda dumb question, but can you paint the DIY lip?
If you do paint it I would use a Krylon Fusion or equivalent, you want the paint to be able to flex, i would just keep it how it is. Its kinda like how the Delorian was all SS and was easy to keep clean that was the beauty part. With they DIY lip if you hit a curb or come out a drive way wrong and scuff it or its just dirty you seriously just wipe the scuff mark away. If you paint it then you have to worry about touch up jobs, chipping, cracking. Its a $20 mod, Id leave it that way.

I'm thinking about doing this on my 2008 hatch. I wonder what kind of rubber I should use since the 2008 is a premium package and the bumper is NOT flat at all. I plan the superglue and 3M tape method. Then later on, if it looks good, bolt it on. Any existing 08's with this mod?

well. I went ahead and did it. It looks pretty cool. Had to take it off cuz it was not sticking due to the ice melting in my wheel wells and getting all over the tape.
I used Frost King Nail On Rubber in 9' variety and it was plenty. 7 bucks at Lowe's.
Also used double sided tape with superglue on the lip side and wiped down the bumper with a gas-soaked paper towel. That tape really STUCK onto the bumper, except where the water dripped in. I'd suggest putting the tape as far back as possible on the lip and on the bumper, cuz mine was VERY visible. Near the wheel wells, you should tuck in the tape into the fender liner so it wont stick out. Def will do this DIY again when its above 68 degrees outside and sunny.

Question to people who already perform the DIY lip mod....
any cracks or tears in the lip? Just wondering if after rain/snow/sun, the rubber lip will deteriorate or will loose its color, etc

it shouldnt lose its color, its made to last since its normally a garage seal. I've had mine on for about 10 months now. Everything looks just like the way i got it, color and all. I armor-all it once every month for the hell of it.

it's not what i'd call rigid but it won't flap in the wind. it may deflect and if anything, buzz back and forth for a millimeter, but that's purely a guess. i think if it moves at all, it just moves a few millimeters back and stays pinned. honestly i don't even think it would do that.

My first DIY lip w/out the prodrive, I scraped a lot (BUMPS & steep driveways) to the point where it ripped off from the 3M tape. Now w/ my prodrive, I scrape and somehow it's still on. Either way, the DIY lip is good for the $$, if you damage it you can buy another for CHEAP.

I just did this on my 04 WRX. I Used the frost king. It came out good. I have the stright side showing. IMHO i think it looks better that way. As far as flimsy it is. I would like to see a picture of this lip at speed. With that in mind i took some aluminum flashing that was already bent. Just had to modify the dimentions and installed the lip with 1" washers and the flashing. It took alittle work but it came out good. The flashing gives it alot mor rigity in the front. Held up to 80+ mph in the rain tonight.

How easily will carpet tape and such come off?
I want to do this mod, and I think I can make something work out with brackets to use the stock holes at the bottom of the bumper, but I'll still need to tape it on. Problem is, I want this mod to be reversible. Is there something I can use that won't **** up the bottom of the bumper trying to get it off?

Here's my little chop. I think I'll do it with the 3M tape and see what it looks like... I'm not too worried about wasting ~10 dollars haha. I'll do it tomorrow and take pics when I can

I was thinking the same thing.
Just bought the garage seal, and there are holes a plenty in the edge, as it was meant for this kind of thing.
I bet one coudl use plastic trim retainers like the ones under the car to fix that on there.

Looks like he may have stolen one of our pics there too. Whoever owns that bugeye, you should demand he take it down.
