I learned the hard way guys, but if you don't mind spending time and money painting your wheels only to have them look this (see below) when they put new tires on then be my guest. If you are just using them as say seasonal winter wheels, that's fine too. But it doesn't matter how much prepping you do, how much cleaning and sanding and priming and coating and clear coating, the tire shop is going to murderalize them. Do I wish I just spent the extra $ and had my wheels powder-coated? Yes, I do. Very much.
And trust me, NO they did not look like that when I got done painting them. I did a good job. Now it looks like a 3-year old painted my wheels.
I painted mine without tires on, and had no problem when my shop mounted them. They used a ton of lube (edge of tire and wheel had a lot of white crap on them when I picked the car up) but NO CHIPS. I let the paint dry a week before taking them in to have the tires mounted, and I didn't go nuts with tons of coats of paint either - 3 primer, 3 color, 3 clear. Wren at Golf Crawford auto did a good gentle job mounting I guess. Thanks buddy.

the key is prepping them and baking the paint properly so it actually cures. this means QUALITY paint (not from a rattle can) and QUALITY clearcoat that is mixed properly.
then when you get the tires mounted, don't have a high school student working at wal-mart oil and lube express do it... they'll scratch factory paint.
there is NO NEED to get things powder coated when the wheels you're dealing with cost less than the powder coating. just do it right. take the tires off and prep the wheels and use GOOD paint.

You go ahead then and just rattle can them then, we'll see how long they last. I'd rather have them look the same as a brand new wheel and be just as durable.

rattlecan can work if you use quality clearcoat (aka NOT from a rattlecan)
like I said above 99% is in the prep you do.
if you paint them, a local bodyshop will probably clearcoat them really cheap and bake them for you if you have the tires off.

yeah but I'd only powdercoat some nice wheels...

most nice wheels are not able to be powder coated, because they are made of material that reacts poorly to the extreem heat of being baked during the powder coat process...
and as long as it looks good, its always worth it...

You should shoot some before/after pics, or at least get some pics of them up here once they're done. How much are they doing it for? Here they quoted me $400 for a set of 4 wheels. I think flat black would look sick powder coated. A lot better than my slop job.

The temp. that the wheels are baked at is only 400 degrees. No good for plastic parts but no problem for aluminum........thick aluminum BEGINS to melt at 900-1000 degrees.

so I painted my rims and 2 of them are messed up
1 has drips and the other has a different color paint from painting the inside
I waited 24 hours, then wet sanded with 1000 grit
I plan to then repaint them and then clear coat
Was this ok? or will I run into any issues with the paint later?

it should say on the can "until completely dry"

yup just use some stripper either in a spray can or use a brush to apply it. comes right off.

If you use paint stripper it will also remove the paint from the factory as well .. your best bet is to just paint over the new color with the stock color

The wheels are painted from the factory? I guess I'm kind of surprised at this and would have thought the stock alloy was just its natural color and polished/shined up or whatever.

nope. its some nasty crap that they put on from the factory. funny how it stays on when your taking it off but if you like it, it tends to scrape and fall off. i would just completely remove it and start from scratch. they do sell a stock looking color.

So, I just started cleaning and sanding the wheels I am going to paint. I had a few questions:
Does anyone know if you have to sand all the original paint off completely or do you just have to rough it up so that the primer will stick?
Do I need etching primer or will the standard gray Duplicolor sandable primer work?
What did people do with the back inside part of the wheel? Do people paint that too or just leave it? Mine have almost a decade of grease and dirt caked on.

I just rough the paint up, you just need a surface that the primer will grip too.
I have used just standard primer with no issues
Some people paint the insides of the wheels. I don't .. Currently my wheels are bright blue and you can't tell unless you look close whether they are painted on the inside or not

How is 4 jackstands not safe?
4 two ton props holding up my car is alot safer than a one billion ton jack.
Why? Jacks are a hydraulic piece of equipment prone to fail.
Solid steel will not.
4 two ton props holding up my car is alot safer than a one billion ton jack.
Why? Jacks are a hydraulic piece of equipment prone to fail.
Solid steel will not.

is sandable primer bad to use?
| asaturn | 09-22-2009 11:52 PM |
no
basically the most important part is the clearcoat
you want a durable clearcoat otherwise the paint will chip off

What about powdercoat? I'm getting a new wrx and want to have darker rims, it's a little more expensive but I don't wanna mess up. How would I powdercoat??

sand/prep wheels
primer (some skip this step...) -- use a primer that corresponds with your final coat -- for dark colors use black, for light colors use grey or white
sand down the primer to get out any imperfections/runs/etc
top coat of whatever color -- do at least 2-3 coats and separate the coats by at least an hour
allow at least 4 hours to "dry" before moving the wheels
let the wheels bake in the sun (if possible) for as long as possible...
then clearcoat and repeat the baking/setting process
if you don't clearcoat, the paint will just fall off

hmmm, I used the duplicolor gold engine enamel, figuring it would be tougher. Unfortunately it got too cold AND humid, so I stopped at wheel one. It is less of a bright yellowy gold than some folks, more bronzy, which I'm liking.
