hey kooky :) I'm thinking even some kind of marine-grade plexiglass, or if thats too hard an open black mesh will do fine :)

Either way it will look very classy on FEISTI  (i vote for black mesh, will intergrate well with the black wheels IMO :D )

Hi everybody. My apologies for the delays and lack of updates. My kids and job have had me very busy lately.
The frames are back at the machine shop yet again for a modification. Mesh goes to the waterjet'er this week and then to powder coat.
Here are some pics worth posting of an unpainted frame on my car (complete with fingerprints). The photos don't do the improvements justice, but I am happy with the look and the fit (except for the front corners - hence the mods being done).
Thanks for your patience...

that looks really good on a silver car, but i wonder how it would look unpainted on a blue wrx/sti.
i would think it would be hard to color match for the wrb blue with out raising the cost.
how hard is it to paint the trim black like the mesh grill?

It's meant to be painted, but the aluminum really doesn't look too bad bare (when it's cleaned up) on a PSM car. I will be getting some powder coated the same color as the mesh. I also will be painting a few PSM silver when I finally have mine done. Also thinking about painting some WRB, but am worried about how well it will match from car to car.

See how this front corner sticks up a little bit (in the pic below). This is what I am trying to fix right now. I think I have to add another stud there to pull it down. It's a minor detail, but I'm picky...

Knuckles, my brother from another mother!!!!!!!!!!
Great work on the "Knuckle Delete", I'm definitely down for one of these powdercoated in black (mesh and frame) and I'll spruik it to the Aussie FMIC boys.
The back sits perfect, and after front sits properly you should approach the main vendors and see if they want to resell these, you'll make a tidy return on your R&D efforts methinks!

I've talked to a couple already. They are more interested in some other projects I have going on for the most part. I have a few options otherwise also, including my eBay store. First things first - I need to get something 100% complete and ready to go. I takes a lot longer doing this on my own than I'm used to, whereas at my job I have a team of people to help (purchasing, accounting, mechanics, machinists, a cute "administrative assistant", etc.) and much capital to work with.

I'd be interested in this also. For some reason, the seibon reverse scoop that I got doesn't fit the carbon oem hood. It is supposed to fit it. So, it's being sent back and I'm gonna keep the carbon hood scoop on untill I find a reverse scoop/hood vent to fit there. Keep me in mind when you start selling these. I need to get rid of this scoop.

I cannot even hint about price on this forum. Prolly pushing my luck as it is. Painted and ready to install it will be much less than anything name-brand carbon fiber, maybe about the same as painted quality fiberglass.

Well, I could do one in 303 stainless... but it would be somewhat expensive. I dunno how that would look either. There are some decent looking stainless powder coatings too.

The frame/bezel is aluminum. The grill mesh is steel.
Why did I use steel mesh?!? Good question. I think Grillcraft has the best looking mesh, after I tried several. They have it specially made for them exclusively. I have a line on it now (sort of). I looked at both their steel and their aluminum mesh. The aluminum is thicker to withstand rock hits, etc. and it doesn't look as good. Also when weighed it weighed almost as much as the steel mesh due to it's extra thickness. The steel was a no-brainer then, but I would recommend it be powder coated for longterm anti-corrosion, and that is how the first run will be done. Epoxy paint may be good enough too, but I won't be doing it.
If anybody would like to use a different mesh it is easy to cut your own out of aluminum. Steel is a PITA to cut by hand but doable. There are lighter meshes out there for sure, but this whole assembly already weighs less than the stock scoop/splitter.

The first run of mesh will all be powder coated semi-flat black (like the photos). After that, who knows...
Some frames will also be powder coated the same black. I'll take photos of this when it happens. I think this will look great on black or white cars, but we'll see.
I am looking into pre-painting some frames WRB, AW, and PSM. Dunno about CGM. I am a little concerned about blind color matching. Let me see how the first PSM one looks. I am purposefully not having the paint matched to my car to see how it does blind. The first run may have limited pre-painting done, or there may be a leadtime on it.
The machine shop is still working on the frames. I'd be pissed if I hadn't done so many change orders on them in the last couple weeks. :o

Why don't you just sell them bare with the black mesh (or bare with bare mesh) to let the buyer deal with painting it? It would save you the trouble plus it would let you sell them cheaper. This way people could get them done the way they want and match the paint to their car. Different cars are going to fade at different rates, and there might be some blending involved. Me personally would get the bare frame with the black mesh (just as your concept photos showed). Then I would get the frame powder coated at my leisure and to my exact specs. Just my $.02.

I appreciate that comment. It is a valid point. Most frames will be bare at first. I am just exploring how feasible it is to pre-paint in quantity to save people some money later on. The pre-painted parts I have gotten from Jamie at SubaruGenuineParts.com have been pretty good (though I think most of them are from Subaru). I also want to get some painted ones on some different-color cars for pics asap.

It's 6061-T6 aluminum, so it anodises very nicely. I haven't done one of these, but I've had thousands of 6061 parts anodised over the last 20 years. There are minor surface scratches that would need to be buffed out first (or a grained or brushed finish), but that's it. It's also not soft aluminum, it's tempered to a good hardness (though not aircraft-grade hardness).

Thanks Knuckle I would have mentioned 6061-T6 but may have gone over most people's heads ;) (I work in the architectural aluminium industry) A light linish may be a good idea but deciding which direction to linish may be the hard part!
