The FIX! 05 STi clusters into 02-03s (possibly 04s) part 2

subaru_west 01-10-2008 01:16 PM

I have a wrx 2006 and i have a sti cluster 2007 , and I have the same problem , the left harness dont plug to the cluster ... please help
RossLH 01-23-2008 05:46 PM

For those of you asking about the '06 left plug not fitting, I just said screw it and took a razor to the plug itself, and it worked!

Leave the STi cluster alone, the peg should line right up with the '02 WRX peg. The two pegs on the plug that dont fit (should be the pegs on the right side, a.k.a closer to the middle of the cluster) cut them both right off. The two pegs on the left of the plug, as well as the peg on the STi cluster should line up perfectly. I will draw a horrible illustration if needed.

From there, follow the instructions as originally listed, and you'll be golden. In fact, the exterior temperature even seems to be working for me.

To the OP, thanks for the write up! Everything worked great, I just had to improvise with the left plug.

hi, i did some searching and was wondering if a stock wrx non sti cluster will fit a 02-03 wrx??? and if not will this wiring fix that? thanx

Are you sure about that? Refer to post 57 by chrisarella.

Nice write up do you know if you can get the DCCD to work if you swapped in a 6 speed.

Nice.
SICK03SONIK 02-07-2008 11:08 PM

I just finished installing the 05 sti cluster into my 03 wrx and i found out that on the left plug coming from the 03 wrx you have to shave the 4 slide guide around the plug for it is more narrow than the one on the 05 sti cluster. I took a chance and shaved it and it all worked out for me, everything worked besides the dimmer and ofcourse the DCCD, outside temp and the beeping sound whenever the car hits the redline but the light worked.......Its pretty simple and thanks to the knowledge of some nasioc peeps I saved some dough. Good luck

Has anybody with an '06 STi cluster swap gotten the dimmer to work? I'm just curious to see if I could get that working. Which pin goes to the dimmer?
I know this is old, but no one answered it. The answer is yes. I have the 04 WRX cluster in mine. I had is modded with blue back-lighting from Lightwerkz. Only the ABS light is on. I did STI seats at the same time so this could be a result of the seats. It doesn't matter because I'm pulling the cluster and doing the recommended electrical tape mod. Here are some pics:

Sorry for the blurriness. It's really tough to take interior night shots without using the flash or a tripod.
Very nice! :diaf:
ImprezGC8 05-28-2008 10:25 AM

I have a valid question. For the rear diff. light, you guys say to ground the wire to make the light go off. Can you just connect that wire with a wire tap to the ground that goes to the cluster instead of trying to find somewhere else to ground it? I am doing a 06 STi in my swapped RS and would like to get everything as close to perfect as possible.

Thanks,
Anthony

PS. I have a WRX dash, so all of my wiring is for an 02.
tonecold 05-28-2008 05:06 PM

For the Rear. Diff. light, ABS, and DCCD, I just opened up the cluster (very easy) and put electrical tape under the velvet like gauge surround piece.

So you can't even see the electrical tape from the outside. Looks very nice.

I'm just missing:
1. Outside Temp reading.
2. Illumination/Brightness control.
3. Cruise light doesn't come up, but the cruise works.
4. Seat belt indicators doesn't seem to be working either.

This was an 06 cluster into 02.
ImprezGC8 05-28-2008 11:22 PM

Sweet. I actually just did a 06 cluster in my swapped RS (which has all 02 wiring because of the dash) and everything is actually working good. I did not have to tape over anything. The DCCD light does not come on, neither does the rear dif. temp. I do have a high beam light on because I HID's which means no high beam and my outside temp actually reads a temp. but obviously not the right one. I thought I read somewhere that if it had a temp displayed that you can get it to work, but not if it had the -- where the temp should be. Could be wrong. Just thought that I would let eveyone know. All I did was cut the 2 wires mentioned and trimmed the tabs and everything worked. Anyone have any ideas on how to get the high beam light off? Also just to let everyone know, the connector that goes on the left side of the cluster, that has the two extra pins. I put the connector in so that the 2 pins that would not have any wires going to them on the inside part of the connector (closests to the middle). Could that be why I did not have to put any tape over lights or why they do not come on at all? Just thought I would ask.

Thanks for the write up.

that looks really nice

this thread is so old.. but w/e.. today i installed a 05sti cluster in my 02 wrx.. and everything works.. i got all the lights.. like abs, diff temp, etc.. and used tape to cover them.. it was so damn simple.. and also.. idk why u guys keep saying the buzzer dont work.. for the shift light.. if it does.... i cut the two wires said on this thread.. but i still have the shift light beeping... u can turn the beeping off and on.. all u have to do is.. with the left stick to set ur rev.. u put it on ur desired rpm.. and then wait a few secs.. keep looking at where the outside temperature appears.. and u can see the rpm the light will go on.. but after the number clears.. u can see two lines like this (--) if u more the stick again.. u can see the on.. or off will appear as the two lil lines.. if u put it on the ON position u will hear the shift beeping... i tried turning it off and it works too.. the only thing is the cluster being on all the time.. but thats not a biggie.. u cant see anything when its off anyways.. but u can adjust the illumination brightness.. if u press the trip stick 3 times.. then u can see the 5 settings of brightness u can choose from.. 5 being the brightest.. u have to use the rev stick to choose from 1-5.. other than that.. the cluster kicks as$

With an '06 cluster (not sure about '07), there is no access to the dimmer. It just switches between trip A and trip B.
tonecold 07-18-2008 02:55 PM

^^^Yep, I have an 06 cluster in my 02, and the dimming function does not work.

As far as I know, the 07 is the same way.

So my question is, how do the 06/07 guys dim their clusters?

oo.. that sucks.. cuz the 5 brightness.. is really bright.. like.. i put mine at 4 for the night.. and when i turn off the lights.. it goes full brightness.. but it looks good during the day.. when it gets dark full brightness is like a xmas tree in there.. does anyone knows about the outside temp?? mine stays at 43.. but sometimes it goes blank.. like ---.. and this morning was a 41 wtf.. but i saw a link a long time ago about making it work.. i just cant find it again.. a lil help would be awesome.. i only have nasioc and clubwrx, subyforums
Chris05STi 07-24-2008 11:44 PM

Can anyone take a pic of this horrible left plug that you have to shave and deal with those 2 extra pins?! Please?! I need to see what everyone is talking about:) Thanks!
Chris05STi 07-27-2008 03:20 PM

Anyone?
ImprezGC8 08-14-2008 03:00 PM

I just thought that I would share this with everyone looking at this thread. I have a 06 STi cluster in my swapped RS and the buzzer for the shift light does work. I have not read this thread lately, but figured I would post it anyway. Pretty much what you have to do is after you set the RPM you want it to come on at it beeps once. After the beep the screen on the bottom left has 2 dashs, if you turn the nob again it should change to on and then the buzzer should work for the shift light. Not sure about the earlier clusters, but it does work for the 06 cluster. And again not sure if it was discovered already in this thread but just wanted to share the info.

If I put an 05 cluster into my 03 can I get the shift light and beeper to work?
ImprezGC8 09-02-2008 09:55 PM

I have an 06 cluster in my swapped RS with 02 dash and I followed the instructions on here to put the cluster in and everthing works fine. The shift light and buzzer. On mine after you set the rpm it beeps and then you turn it again to put the buzzer on or off. Not sure if it is the same for the 05 cluster, but i would think so.
Unrealgtx 09-06-2008 11:38 PM

well this thread is old but i just did my swap from 02 cluster to 06 , and the radio fuse keeps blowing
Unrealgtx 09-08-2008 01:14 AM

bump for some help
RossLH 09-08-2008 03:00 AM

Did you read through the thread at all? The question is answered in the first post. If you follow the directions step by step (which I did with my '02, using an '06 cluster much like yourself, and I even had to improvise with the plugs), it will work fine. There are two wires that you need to cut.
mannyOlicious 09-11-2008 04:00 PM

I was wondering why, after cutting the right wires does my radio fuse keep blowing? And I mean blowing as soon as I turn the ignition key!!! I love everything about the new cluster... It's an 05 cluster in a 02 subie. If worst comes to worst, I'll just wire it directly from the battery. Thank you!!!
RossLH 09-11-2008 04:30 PM

Either the wire managed to reattach itself or you cut the wrong wire. Take some pictures of which wires you cut and get back to us.

Norrberrt 09-12-2008 11:35 PM

.. hey does anyone know if this will work with an 07 STi USDM Cluster too.. i know it will fit in my 03 WRX but if i follow these steps to avoid these problems.. will it work with my WRX.. no other wires required right?.. please let me know.. thanks..
STL WRX 09-13-2008 01:34 AM

So I have an 05 WRX... Would I be ok with an 04 cluster? Whats easier to install...
Norrberrt 09-13-2008 08:06 PM

.. does anyone have the Fix for an 07 STi Cluster USDM to fit in my 03 WRX.. i heard you need to cut more than 1 wire.. and on the 04 and 05 oyu only need to cut one?..

Norrberrt, I did an 06 Cluster in my 02 WRX and i just followed the instructions in this thread and everything works fine. I did not have to cut anymore wires then what are mentioned here and everything works correctly including the shift light buzzer.
Chris05STi 09-17-2008 09:04 AM

ImprezGC8 - Could you take more detailed pics of the that one plug you need to shave off? I have a 2005 STi cluster that I want to put in my 2002 WRX. I got everything, 2 our of 3 plugs in, but that one that you have to shave the sides of the plug.

Also, what was that company that people use to send in their clusters to change the ODO? I want to get the STi cluster to match my WRX mileage.

.. hey im confused.. now.. i just got my STi Cluster and it says to Cut B28 which is the green and yellow wire.. correct.. now.. do i leave it sitting just like that.. cut.. opened..leaving the wires open?.. and it says to crimp on wires.. and in the pictures it has the green and yellow crimped?..
Chapel 09-17-2008 07:54 PM

that's because it had an STI cluster in, then the WRX cluster was reinstalled (using the butt connectors)... then I put the STI cluster back in (and documented it at that point)

You can cut the wires and splice on some insulated quick connect plugs and leave them open or if you plan on leaving the STI cluster in forever, just put some electrical tape over the exposed ends.
Norrberrt 09-17-2008 08:26 PM

.. hey i installed my 05 STi cluster in to my 03 WRX.. and all the lights work.. except that when i turn the car.. but not all the way.. just to have the lights turned on.. it has this really long "Beep" on.. and it wont turn off.. any help?..
Chris05STi 09-17-2008 10:55 PM

Is it just me or is everyone just avoiding my question? Please, last time: Can anyone further explain/take pics of that one plug that has to be modified to work. I have a 05 STi cluster for my 2002 WRX. Thanks!

.. you have to modify the left plug that is located on the STi Cluster.. have the Cluster facing towards you and the one on the top left side.. you will have to shave the peg down.. in order for your WRX plug to slide in.. try it out and youll see what i am talking about.. and you must cut the Green and Yellow wire which is B28.. there are pics of it on the first page..

vwown3d 09-18-2008 05:33 PM

got a 04 sti cluster for trade, looking for an 05+ non-sti cluster round 70-80k miles
ImprezGC8 09-19-2008 09:08 AM

Chris05STi: All I did was shave down the middle tab on the plug coming from the cars wiring harnress of the one that doesn't fit. By shaving the middle one down it allowed the plug to 1 side and slide it completely in. The plug is smaller then the socket on the cluster so a few of the pins don't go anywhere from the cluster. I can try to take some pics this weekend and post them.
Chris05STi 09-19-2008 09:35 AM

I also did shave that middle nub down long ago. My main problem is that the two guide grooves that on the plug, they are not as wide as the channels for the plug to go in the cluster. Anyone else have this problem? I will take pics to show later on.
ImprezGC8 09-19-2008 10:40 AM

I might have shaved down one of the others on the plug as well to get it to fit into one side I will check this weekend and let you know. What I did was line up where the clip is on the plug with where it has to be on the socket and then just shaved off what i needed to. It might have been the middle and one side that I shaved off. As long as the click goes in right than everything should work right.
Chris05STi 09-19-2008 10:51 AM

^Yah thats what I was thinking, just shave down the two guide grooves so it fits into the socket. I had 2 out of the 3 clips plugged in, turned the car on and everything went on. Obviously the fuel/coolant temp were not showing anything because they plug wasn't in. Got the annoying beep which I knew would happen since I didn't clip that wire, also blew the fuse for the radio which I knew would happen. Funny thing, I had a temp reading!!!!! I was like WFT, it read 42 degrees F. I read somewhere that if you get that reading, then you can get it to work?
ImprezGC8 09-19-2008 10:57 AM

Yea I have a reading on mine is well, but haven't really found an answer saying that I can get it to work. Dunno where the reading is coming from though even though today it was pretty close. It said 32.
ImprezGC8 09-19-2008 10:58 AM

Just make sure that you line it up like you are going to clip it in and then see which tap you have to shave. At least one of then should line up when you line up to clip it in. I am pretty sure that if I look at my cluster from the back, the plug on the right is the one you have to shave and I think mine is up against the right side of the socket looking from the back. So that would mean I shave the middle and left tab on the plug.
Chris05STi 09-19-2008 11:06 AM

^Cool, thanks so much for you input! I will def check this out during my lunch! Hopefully it will work out, and then just ship it out to get the ODO reading the right mileage:)!
Chris05STi 09-19-2008 12:59 PM

ImprezGC8 - Thanks so much for your help. Shaved down that one groove and it fit like a glove!!!! Now everything works:)! Just gotta send it to get the ODO changed!
