I concur. Although de Matta's incident is a pretty severe example, he's not the first person to hit an animal on a race course, nor will he be the last, and I think that's all CirrusWRX was saying.
Hopefully de Matta will continue to improve and will come out of this without any serious lasting effects.

Most people will give some sort of "condolences" then maybe comment on the risk of racing. Neither Circus or the first guy (don't remember who it was) casually states the cars hit animals all the time with no mention of anything relating to DaMatta. That leads to a conlusion that they see it as "oh well". If you made an appointment with me and I told you you had cancer, then followed with "lots of people get cancer" without any concern for you, it would be in bad taste and unprofessional, but it would be a true statement. This thread is for those that want information on his condition and want information about what happened, not "oh well, lots of people hit animals"

I haven't heard anyone give an educated guess on how his life might be after he recovers. Will he walk again? Will he be able to talk? Can he drive competitively? Will he be able to breathe?
Again, my thoughts go out to him.

With head injuries, especially severe ones, it's often too hard to tell until the injured party regains consciousness and actually tries to do such things.
| StuBeck | 08-21-2006 08:00 PM |
I think he is breathing on his own now, which is good.

da Matta walking and talking.
Former Champ Car World Series champion Cristiano da Matta continues to make significant progress as he recovers from his injuries suffered in testing at Road America with the Brazilian driver already able to converse in both English and Portuguese.
Although da Matta is still in the Theda Clark Medical Centre, where he has been ever since his August 3rd collision with a deer at Road America, his recovery process has quickened over the past two weeks according to Champ Car Medical Director Dr. Chris Pinderski.
"Cristiano has made excellent progress in the past several days," said Pinderski. "Although he is still somewhat confused, he is now conversational in both English and Portuguese. Additionally, he has started to walk on his own for short periods of time with minimal assistance. We anticipate that Cristiano will be ready to make the transition to a rehabilitation setting next week."
Cristiano da Matta could return home to Miami soon, as he continues to recover from the injuries he suffered when he hit a deer during testing at Road America.
The Brazilian has spent the last six weeks recovering at the Theda Clark Medical Centre in Neenah, Wisconsin, and he has now been transferred to the facility's rehabilitation unit.
Champ Car medical director Dr. Chris Pinderski visited Da Matta this week to monitor his condition and is impressed by how his recovery is going.
"Cristiano has continued to show excellent progress while recovering from his injury," said Pinderski.
"Early last week, he was transferred to the rehab unit at Theda Clark Medical Center where he is participating in a very intensive rehabilitation regimen designed specifically for patients with significant head injuries.
"Cristiano is looking forward to returning to Miami in the near future and will continue his rehab program there."
Da Matta's RuSPORT team will run with the logos of the Theda Clark Medical Centre and the Champ Car Safety team on Justin Wilson's car at the Road America race next weekend.
Da Matta not thinking about future
By Glenn Freeman Thursday, November 30th 2006, 15:12 GMT
Cristiano da Matta has said that he has almost completely recovered from his injuries sustained at Elkhart Lake in August, but he will not think about his future yet.
The Brazilian suffered serious injuries in testing at the track when his car collided with a deer, but he believes he is "ninety-nine per cent" recovered.
"I'm almost completely recovered, living a normal life and focusing on my health," da Matta said on his personal website.
"I can already move my arm in whatever way I want, and now I just need to work a little bit on my strength."
However, da Matta is not yet contemplating his return to racing.
He was quoted by the Associated Press as saying: "I made a promise not to think about racing again before I'm 100-percent recovered.
"I'm not being able to completely keep this promise, of course, but I try to stay away from the subject."
Da Matta back behind the wheel
By Simon Strang Tuesday, March 25th 2008, 17:13 GMT
Former Champ Car champion Cristiano da Matta has driven a racing car for the first time since suffering critical head injuries in a testing accident at Elkhart Lake more than 19 months ago.
The 34-year-old Brazilian successfully tested a GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing GrandAm at Eagles Canyon in Texas last week, and could now partner former PKV Champ Car teammate Jimmy Vasser in a second BSR Pontiac Riley at Laguna Seca in May.
Da Matta, who suffered a subdural hematoma after hitting a dear while testing his RuSport Champ Car in August 2006, spent nearly two months in hospital in recovery.
Since then his rehabilitation has included go-kart racing and mountain-biking, but until the GrandAm test he had not driven a racing car in anger since his accident.
"The biggest thing I felt today was just a sense of relief," da Matta told SpeedTV after the test. "For me, it was a big, big relief; bigger than big.
"Even though I had opinions and approval from the best doctors and I felt great in go-karts and even on video games as far as my skills, I still had that last little question mark on my mind. That worried me quite a lot.
"After the test, I realised 'I still know how to do this. I remember this very well'.
"I feel lighter now. It was worrying me more than I thought. And for my dad, it was even bigger. The way I saw my dad when we finished the test, it was a big relief for him too. This test changed everything."
Da Matta was pleased with his performance in the car and found that all the old instincts came back quickly.
And despite having never driven a GrandAm prototype before, da Matta felt at home in the cockpit.
"Even driving a new car for the first time that was something that I was able to quickly do, to figure out how it worked, what I need to do, just everything with getting familiar with a new car," he said.
"It was all there for me. I have the same type of feeling I have always had before, and I know exactly what I have to do to get better. The lap times were there consistently."
The opportunity for da Matta to drive the GrandAm championship-winning car came through Vasser, who was not only a former rival but a close friend, and team owner Bob Stallings admitted he hoped to team them up as soon as possible in the series.
"All my drivers come from the same placethey're really great at what they do and they all came out of open-wheel racing, so they share similar experiences," he said.
"But the chemistry between Jimmy Vasser and Cristiano is incredible; they're great friends and I'm really looking forward to seeing those two guys get in the car together at the Laguna Seca race.
"Both guys know the racetrack very, very well. In fact, I the last time Cristiano was there in Champ Car, he won the race. I really hope we can get their sponsorship secured."

Marshall: As someone who scours a lot of news sites, I can say that your story was head and shoulders above the "Press Releases" published by others. A very nice read.
Keep up the good work. You (along with Dennis Noyes and Robin Miller) are the only real draws for me at speedtv.com as of late.

Thanks Chris! We're still waiting on a lot of fixes to be rolled out, but if you want some good sportscar content, check out the first in a series of old IMSA races I'm bringing back via our video player. Sears Point 1989 IMSA GTP is the debut race tomorrow--40min in total, and with a story to compliment it with new interviews from race winner Geoff Brabham and race host Bob Varsha.
It's taken me 2 years at SPEED to get permission to resurrect the IMSA series online, and thanks to the ALMS, owners of the footage, for giving us the green light, I'll try and edit and uploadl 1-2 GTP or GTO/GTU races each month. Yum.

Wow, I had forgotten this was 2 years ago. Good to hear an update and hope he's able to get back to racing soon.

Wow That is awesome, the first race I ever went to was the 1988 12 Hours of Sebring. The GTP cars will always have a special place in my heart, and Geoff Brabham was my hero.
Sorry about being off topic to Da Matta, that is fantastic news to hear about him.

Geoff was a favorite of mine too when I was younger, in fact, I snuck into the winner's circle at the Glen to get his autograph.
When Geoff and Chip finished their interview with a local TV station and turned around they were surprized as you-know-what to see some young punk ;) standing there. There were so impressed that I had "found" my way in that they talked to me for a few minutes before signing my ticket stub.

Hey, I beat all you guys. Jack Brabham was my hero back in the 60's and I followed his kids and became a big fan of Geoff starting in '79 when he was racing Super Vees and the Mini Indy series, I think they called it that back then. Loved watching him drive the VDS Can-AM car. I met Geoff at the Long Beach GP when he was racing for Galles I think. I was always disappointed he never one a CART race despite 6 second place finishes. His IMSA success made up for that somewhat.
Anyway, back on topic, glad Cristiano is back. I hope he doesn't push himself too much until he is ready and people give him time to get back into the groove.
