i'll be supporting giniel as always..
while he no longer drives for nissan motorsport SA, we'll all still be behind him 100%.. and am sure he'll do VW proud this year.
Weasel 555 12-13-2006 11:00 AM

Paris-Dakar rocks and is nice since it kills the time from when wrc ends to when it starts again :D

follow it here info/news etc

bjorn240 12-13-2006 11:05 AM

I'm rooting for Andy Grider!
littlefluffybunnies 12-13-2006 11:07 AM

in a hummer.. wow
it's their second appearance not so?
CirrusWRX 12-13-2006 11:09 AM

Think OLN is going to cover it again this year? IIRC it was OLN, anyway, last year had fairly decent daily coverage (IMO) given that events like these are getting less and less coverage every year, anything over and above press releases is a bonus in my book!
littlefluffybunnies 12-13-2006 11:12 AM

oh no.. that's so wrong
we'll have a dedicated channel with coverage 24/7
bjorn240 12-13-2006 11:22 AM

Yeah, in a Hummer. But Andy used to ride in Dakar for KTM, and was on Travis's Baja 1000 team last year. And he's a great guy, so I can forgive him the Hummer.

AFAIK, it's Robbie's third year (1x in a VW, and 1x in the Hummer H3), but it's Andy's first year in a truck.
Yotsuya 12-13-2006 12:14 PM

The old school rally poser in me wants to root for Ari Vatanen and Fabrizia Pons...
OBShahn 12-13-2006 12:21 PM

I'll be cheering for Mark Miller!
WRXedUSA 12-13-2006 02:11 PM

God damn right I'll be rocking Dakar.
PB317 12-13-2006 02:11 PM

Jonah Street on a KTM. He is a local ripper from Ellensberg WA.

ooooh.. wait.. are you coming to africa?
greg donovan 12-14-2006 11:11 AM

HIROSHI MASUOKA, that guy is sneaky fast.

too bad colin isnt running this year. i wonder what he is up to.
Jon Bogert 12-14-2006 11:35 AM

Hope Robby Gordon is better prepared this year. With a mouth like that, he had better be top 10.

The coverage last year wasn't bad. Much better than 2005. Hope it's at least as good this year.
Recce01 12-14-2006 12:42 PM

LOL you can say that again.... I went with Robby's team last year, and it was insane... pure insanity. We got to Portugal the week before the event then proceeded to work straight through to the start of the event, getting only 9 hours of sleep in the 5 days preceeding the start of the rally. I can't remember much on the rally, just working all night long, then driving all day, thank god for RedBull, though it had no effect by the 4th or 5th day. All in all an amazing experience, something I may do again in the future if I can align myself with a more organized team.
littlefluffybunnies 12-27-2006 11:23 AM

route changed.. http://www.dakar.com/2007/DAK/presentation/us/r3_1-news.html#art16825

was expecting that.

so the count down's begun here in SA..
getting far too excited.. :D
Protege Menace 12-27-2006 03:32 PM

I am UBER excited for it to start.

More than I am excited for WRC events.

I will be watching each days coverage (which I'll get off the motorsports torrents) on my 10 foot high def projector/screen
nKoan 12-27-2006 04:04 PM

The past few years, I was rooting for McRae, and I also like rooting for the other ex-WRC drivers, if only cause I recognize the names more often than not.

On the other hand, I don't really fully dedicated favorite, and I just like watching the race. So much can go wrong, its exciting up until the end.

oh noeeess, you have to have a team/driver/manufacturer you support whole heartedly... i've cried with them.. and laughed with them
(then again, being female does tend to make me a bit more emotional.. lol)

I'll always support Giniel.. even though he's since left SA for germany.
.. nissan for VW..

"Giniel de Villiers, runner up in the 2006 Dakar, will drive a VW Touareg, Ralph Pitchford will be co-driver for a US Touareg driver, privateer Kevin Heath will be in his third event and Nissan SA is the major driving force behind the development of the Navaras."

As for the bikes.. Alas, Alfie Cox, will not be racing this year..
"Cox, who has competed in the Dakar eight times on a bike with a top finish in second spot and twice in cars, will not race." :(

Other South Africans competing in the bike category will be Tom Classen and Oz Bestel (each on a KTM) and Christo Aspeling on a Honda - all riding for the Rally Raid UK team
3barboost 12-28-2006 05:31 AM

Hey ! good old Tom Claasen is my local plumber !

and its the same man - him and me have spent long hours talking about the dakar while his work crew fix the plumbing !

oh crap.. nevermind, i'm being retarded.

lol.. fancy seeing you here
3barboost 12-28-2006 05:41 AM

that was worth it
I would give a kidney to do the dakar !!! the costs are silly though !
littlefluffybunnies 12-28-2006 05:45 AM

yeah.. pitty about cox not taking part..
or nissan having a local team.. sigh

i read the article about classens ride
bike rental and support something like half a bar. ..eish..
3barboost 12-28-2006 05:47 AM

then theres all the other costs / fuel / evac / medical / support team / parts its hugely costly to race across the middle of nowhere !!!
Tom is a fascinating person - not only does he run his plumbing business but hes also a councillor in the local government as well
littlefluffybunnies 12-28-2006 05:50 AM

hahah... no way
that i had no idea about.

i thought the half a bar included parts and spares with full support from raid?
at least that's the impression i got from the article?
Yotsuya 12-28-2006 12:55 PM

i didn't find the competitor list with the provided link. is Carlos Sianz driving this year, how about Colin Mcrae?
if so i'm rooting for Carlos, Colin, and Ari. :-)

Just in case anybody doesn't know (I didn't), the OLN cable/sat channel has changed it's name to "VS" (Verses).

They will be showing Dakar coverage starting Jan 7

Sideshowbob 12-29-2006 01:34 PM

thanks for the update on Versus.

Dakar ****ing rawks.
littlefluffybunnies 01-02-2007 03:24 AM

5 more days guys.. :D
scoobyRx 01-02-2007 08:15 AM

excited here too. I'd like to see Jutta do well in the X3, but mostly rooting for VW to win. Miller is first choice or Carlos of course.
I'm not much of a Gordon fan but would be cool to see them do well.

I'd kill to go for a ride in one those giant garbage trucks on a stage :)
littlefluffybunnies 01-02-2007 08:36 AM

and giniel? *gasp

Fantastic information! (Now I'm hoping just a little bit that they might shag WRC coverage.)
scoobyRx 01-03-2007 05:27 AM

oh yeah, and Giniel :)

Is it just me or does the new Mitsu look like a CRX on steroids? I imagine they'll still be the team to beat.

After a quick scan of the entries, I saw 14 American teams listed. That has to be close to the most, I'd think. (8 moto, 2 truck, 4 car)
Bonzo 01-03-2007 08:11 PM

I'm rootin for Chris Blais.

I watch every minute of two events per year. One is the TourdeFrance and the other is P2D.

 Damn skippy  It starts this w/e.
So Cal STI 01-03-2007 08:24 PM

Wow...
Jutta Kleinschmidt, meeeooooowww.... ;)

...back on topic! Go Nissan, Go! Hope the trucks do well this year! :p

i spoke to a friend from nissan motorsport yesterday. it's just not the same not having a local team.. sigh..

oooooh.. counting down ..
they should be starting with scrutineering today

WRC Drivers
The past few years, I was rooting for McRae, and I also like rooting for the other ex-WRC drivers, if only cause I recognize the names more often than not.
Yea, me too-or a particular vehicle, in this case the Nissan "car" (truck). I'm glad to see them compete with a truck based more on the "road going car" rather than the US style Pro-Truck. A la WRC rally truck (if one could have such a thing)!
EBWRC#1 01-04-2007 03:08 AM

I'm exited to see Carlos Sainz piloting the Touareg.
Howl 01-04-2007 09:09 AM

The stage maps on the official Dakar site are pretty good: http://www.dakar.com/2007/DAK/LIVE/us/100/r7_5-parcours.html

I just wish they would keep north to the top, or at least keep them all oriented the same way.
Jonah Street on a KTM. He is a local ripper from Ellensberg WA.

Paul B
He races with Team Rally Pan-America based in SF, CA. Casey McCoy's his teammate, I beleive. They are sponsered by Scuderia West. They had one of their bikes in the window and their chase truck was usually parked across the street. Their team manager is on Advrider.com. There are several guy's who are doing the Dakar there. it's probably the best place I've found for Dakar info and video feeds.

The US coverage of the Lisboa-Dakar is sad at best. I don't know how you can have a daily highlight show that's only 30 minutes long. It always seems too short. I hope someone torrents the EuroSport coverage. Last year there was the UK and AU feeds available daily. It's interesting to see the different feeds and how they change some minor coverage.

Too bad Hiroshi Matsuoka was knocked out last year. The truck didn't look that bad even missing a few feet off the rear. It will be interesting to see Jutta Kleinschmidt driving a BMW X3this year. Vladimir Tchaguine just dominated the truck class in his KAMAZ. It was almost boring to watch him since he was so far into the lead.

Can't forget stage 9 when news of Andy Caldecott's death was announced. RIP

l'Equipe, pshaw.

La Gazzetta Dello Sport for me. ;)

Andy Grider is quite the man on two wheels too. I do hope that big and bouncy four wheeler he's navigating this year does well.

Looks like our coverage starts Sunday but then we get daily shows til the end.

I noticed this car in some pics from tech. You have to be really brave to drive this pos across Africa.

the dakar website has a 'tracking' link.. allows you to select drivers/riders to see where they are... not sure if it's any good.. but i'm keeping an eye on giniel :D
littlefluffybunnies 01-06-2007 07:54 AM

ooooh oooh.. guys check the current standings..
my nerves are shot .. i can't take this.. and it's only the start of the dakar.

lol.. it's classic.. you see a car pushing a truck out the way.. only for the truck to say.. stuff that, and pushes back.. hahahaha
ANZAC_1915 01-06-2007 11:28 AM

Channel 608 "Versus" (formerly OLN?) on DTV starts coverage Jan 7th 3PM ET I think. Show name is "2007 Dakar Highlights" if you're doing a Tivo season pass.

http://www.specialstage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25369

Local race/rally/offroad/Porsche guy Dennis Chizma is crewing for a US team buggy and navigating in one of the big trucks.

(Dennis has even crewed for me once in Canada - totally the nicest guy on the planet.)

shige 01-06-2007 02:14 PM

Looks like Jonah is ahead of Depris. Hope he can keep it up. Go Riff-Raffs!

Chagin is running 3rd in the truck class. I'm sure he's going to dominate again this year. Pretty amazing what those support vehicles can do.

Roma, Alphand and Masuoka seem to be doing well in the car class. It looks like Kleinschmit is almost 30 minutes off the leader. I wonder what happened? Robby's up in 13th though. Think the Hummer will hold up?

I just found this site (Eurosport who does the UK feed). They have a rolling comments list which shows many changes/highlights in the race. They also have a nicer top Ten listing with flags of origin.

LordBass 01-06-2007 03:39 PM

Just watched the intro show in Versus.. Sent a note of thanks in the Feedback area to Versus for once again showing Dakar - and especially for leaving the UK commentary in place. January wouldn't be the same without Dakar on TV. :)
