Yesitsdrew5310, excellent write up! The install looks very clean. I am in a hurry so I will not read through the rest of this thread to see if the answer has been posted...
1.) Do you think it would be wise to seal up the bare metal on the rook. I feel that in 5-10 years, depending on the conditions, it may begin to rust out slowly. Again, just a thought.
2.) When the vent is fully open, does it rub even the slightest bit on the roof? Looks to close to call from the pics.
PS, I will refer to this thread when the STi arrives!

No vent today in the mail... hopefully tomorrow!!
Headliner is already pulled off along with all the other bits...
I expect the actual cutting time be no more than an hour..
Already have my jigsaw with metal fine tipped bit and dremel sitting here..lol
I can not wait!
EDIT:
It is departing JFK airport!
Definatly should have it here tomorrow!
with the angle of the visor, it is already aimming down, but the light is still in my eye. For a while I was trying to put the light inside the visor, instead of on top, but the light unit is too think. The unit is not as clean as I hoped, anything I add on now (ie a shield) it going to make it look very tacky.
ekw, I'm moving to philly this week with my car, let me know if you want to see it in person.

I GOT IT RIGHT NOW!!
This is BIGGER than what the pictures make it seem and look!!! I love it!!!
I already snapped some pictures, now I am going to Ace to get a Temp. dremel and dewalt drill... :-)
One thing I did notice that is different with mine that other people's is the hinges... I have SEEN many pictures and other peoples hinges are black or s/s... Mine however are painted aspen white!!! It's bad ass!
I only wish now that the center cap on the roof vent was white instead of black but I MIGHT use tough up paint on it... but so far I am going to run to the hardware store right now and start cutting!!!!
I will take some pictures as I go through so it might take a little longer as I expected just to show the progress!!
Will have pictures up later today!

Welpers ... spec c vent is installed..
Will have pics when I wake up today.
Install took about 7 hours and three of those were trying to get the damn headliner back on correctly and getting the molding back in place... Damn C pillars!
The actual cut took 15 mins... All the work was all prep.. measure, measure, measure.. make a mark and then measure then cut...lol
Only BIG problem was the damn headliner.. other than that, cutting the hole was cake, bolting it down was cake..
I am pissed though japan parts forgot two of the bolts to actually bolt it to the front of the roof.. so I had to go to the hardware store to get two bolts and washers...
Other than that it's nice how much air is actually forced into the cabin with it open and it doesn't make much noise at all!

WOW awesome stuff guys. Sorry I have been away for a while. I'm glad I was able to help out a few more people with this DIY. It makes it worth all the time I spent writing it up.
As for speeds you can have it open, I cruise 85 with it open down in phoenix all the time. It is just fine.
Just dont try to open or close the vent going above 40.
Looks great guys!

We have one on the rally car. It's geared to go about 116mph, and we regularly exceed 100mph, and we always leave the vent open on stage. We haven't had any problems with the vent at all.
Please obey all local speed limits! :)

I had mine open this weekend while I was at the track (Thunderhill). I was going down the front straight at 125mph with the vent open. It was fine.

Question for you guys that have this.. On mine when I closed it I see the plastic trim and headliner at the front kinda of move... when it REALLY clamps down and locks...
Kinda like if you push the headliner with your finger and it "flexs" ... the trim part does this right at the latch that is attched to the trim piece on the headliner...
Thanks in advance,
-Nigel

I'll PM you what I said here, but If you don't have the rubber piece. DO NOT INSTALL IT. That rubber is what keeps your car dry and the vent sealed, without it, you will have no seal for the vent. I don't know what else you are missing, but by the sounds of it, you are missing some stuff. Where did you get the vent?

Not a drop!
Take your time when you cut, measure, measure, measure and do a good job and you will be fine! To me litterly the hardest part was the god damn headliner... Since I am tall it kept hitting my head as I was trying to put it back into place... Plus since it was only ME putting it back it took longer...where as actually installing the roof vent was cake!

I made an update in the instructions under the removing the headliner part:
Thanks to SloSubie here on NASIOC he said for sedan owners that:
if the passenger seat in the sedan is removed the headliner comes right out the front right passenger door.
So if you own a sedan, you have one more easier step toward installing the roof vent!

Everyone knows when you turn the AC on in our cars we instantly lose 170hp, god knows what that equates to in WHP...
Plus why open the windows when you get more air through the roof vent than all the windows down...
I love my roof vent and coudn't be more happier with it... plus it's JDM (i know i know..lol).. not everyone has this, plus it's really cool to see something that actually sticks out when your with a group os subies...

A buddy of mine has one on his sti and I love it. I really want to get one. Anyone in the mid-atlantic area that is not too far from Richmond, VA install one before and would be willing to lend a hand? I know I could do it myself but its always nice to have someone on hand that has done it before.
Don't have it yet, but would definately like to get it soon.

Why don't we outlaw all cars and force everyone to drive a Prius.

I guess if you hang out with a bunch of Subaru guys, then sure, but I still don't think I could spend the money on. Just think of the negative effect on aerodynamics... its just like having a hoodscoop or a big spoiler... hmm... DOH!

I don't think a 3/4 in. bump in the roof is going to throw off aerodynamics...

NICE I did something similar like that to my moms foci but it is not functional.

to all of you who have done this thus far, does it bother you not having the dome lights? what do you do when you just need light? i saw the pictures of the one owner who added some lights in. some input would be great. thanks
| lcw | 06-25-2007 10:56 AM |
/w the vent , it just take away the map light...and dome light still works...
I have LED dome lights...(which is bright...) so I dun think I need the maplight anymore :)

Ditto, I have led center dome light... it has 15 bright white leds that illuminate the entire cabin.
Paid about $50 or so for it... worth every penny!

great write up

has anyone found a way to somehow move the map lights, or add them back in in some way, shape or form? dome light is all fine and good, even a nice LED one, but nothing beats map lights for just shining a nice bright spot right in your lap.
otherwise, has anyone heard of, or attempted, some sorta DIY maplight-esque addition after installing this vent?

you can buy a rear view mirror that has lights in it. don't ask me where... but i've seen them online somewhere
| Aekon | 10-24-2007 08:34 AM |
realy, that would be good. im gonna start looking and asking around.... if you happen to come across it, could you PM me a link fantomas? thanks!

Can someone post up a pic of the install bracket with the map light bracket also there. I have read that some people left them on while installing and I would like to leave it there also if possible.
Thanks
Jason
Thanks

Once you get the headliner out, hold up the vent frame ("install bracket"), to where it bolts onto the roof. You'll see how it lines up right behind the frame piece for the maplights... there really is no need to remove it, other than to save weight, I guess. The end result is neither mechanically or aesthetically different, and it saves you a difficult (and potentially damaging) step in the installation.
I don't have a photo of it, but I don't think you really need one...
Thanks
