install on the 08+ imprezas is almost the same -- look back in the thread for people who have done the install on an 08... I believe there is a blue 08 STi with the roof vent.

Its not that bad, the door part itself you cant really screw up with mounting.
It covers a pretty big part of the roof so you don't have to cut the hole exact, I cut mine a little small and it looks and works fine.

Fail.
Seriously read the damn thread.
It's not like we are taking the entire car apart.
Remove headliner. Mark, drill, cut, install. Couple hrs worth of work to have an awesome JDM piece on our cars that when you pull next to ANY other suby they will automatically recognize it.
I pulled up to an evo two weeks ago and the first thing he said to me was "HOLY **** YOU GOT A VENT UP THERE!" I was like yea it's awesome, he said he's never seen one before and it looked awesome.
Hands down the vent is one of the best mods ever done to this car. I've had it on my car for 3+ years now and it's unreal. Best $300 I ever spent.
Sad thing is though, I can't take it off the car if I get rid of it :-(

In Rally cross you can't have your windows down which can makes it very hot in your car during the warmer weather months. The vent allows fresh air into the car without loosing power running an a/c, which most real rally car's don't have anyways.
Also, if you have ever taken your car out in the mud, snow, dusty roads, or anywhere else besides asphalt, to enjoy it to it's full potential you would know that having your side windows down dosn't really work. Everything your tires throw up goes on the side of your car and if windows are down that stuff goes in your car. As you can see in this picture, the roof gets very little mud compared to the sides.

If you aren't worried about the JDM look and plan on getting a scoop too, I only spent $170 on my set up and cut it out myself. The vent I got work's two ways. Forward pulls air in and back pulls air out. I got mine for around $50. Not as nice looking as the JDM Subaru one but does the same thing and more. The scoop I got for $120 shipped. I did mess up on the headliner a little in the front.

Little ventilation is an under statement! the roof vent flows more air than having all your windows open, it's insane!

I like how simple that is. Is it still water resistant, like the JDm one?
Basically, other than looks, does it function well for a DD? rain, snow and whatnot?
And where did you get yours for 50 bucks?! I see it on primative's website, but they are $89 there :(

agreed. Drill the 4 holes, and use the jig saw from there. Once the 4 holes is drill, there's no going back. The rest is butter.

I actually after making my template and tracing the vent trim i placed the template on the under side of the roof. Lined it up with what i had just traced from the vent trim and drilled 2 holes up through the template that were centered about 3 inches apart. From there i stuck the drill bit up through one of the holes and placed the tempate on the drill bit since it now has holes in it from drilling up through it. And then lined up the other one so light was coming into the cabin from the little hole and so that i could see through both. Held the template down and traced it.

Go to www.rustrepair.com Click on the Stepvan Parts Catalog. Click on vents and fans, then side vents. You can get them as cheap as $26. I actually bought mine on ebay for $50. I was told about this place after. If you plan on running a scoop make sure you get a vent that fits under the it.
As long as you seal it right then you wont have any problems. I didn't silicone over the rivits at first so water leaked through but that was an easy fix. You hear alittle more outside noise just because you dont have the headliner insulating the sound out. Also, with the scoop you can hear the air going through the scoop when the vents not open. It's not bad though. Definitly a good investment.
Also might check out http://www.dirtyimpreza.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2426 to see more pics.

Just to update, Ive had mine on for about a year, and have no issues at all. No leaks or anything. And yes, I still say this is THE BEST mod I have done to my car. I got mine super cheap, but after having it, I would be willing to pay full price for it any day.
Just to reassure anyone doing the work, it's really simple.. here's a few tips.
1. Make sure to cut on the inside of the measurement you make for the hole. Its better if you cut it just a little too small than have it just a little too big. You could always cut more off if you need to but good luck trying to shrink a hole that you cut too big.
2. Tape off the whole front roof of the car, as the metal shavings do get everywhere. I had a few of spots I needed to buff out because my arm was resting on metal shavings while I was cutting the hole.
3. The plastic bag was genius and worked amazingly.
4. The hole on the trim piece is slightly larger towards the rear of the vehicle. Just something to take note of. You can cut a straight oval and it will still work fine, but I wanted to match everything perfectly to get the max amount of airflow.
5. Definitly make sure to measure many times before you start drillling/cutting. I know how anxious you may be to get that thing in, but believe me 10 minutes of extra measure time is not worth a hole in the wrong spot.
6. If you dont have to drill out the map light bracket, THEN DONT! Its too easy for the drill bits to grab and pull through and hit the roof. Guess how I found that out  Now I have to live with tiny dimples.....

you dont have to remove the map light bracket. well, i didnt at least. i'd say just leave it be.
very good tips though that i would also recommend. i love my vent. no problems here either, 2 years in, snow/rain/ice and its still perfect.

HAHAHA... guess how I can relate? :p I have 2 dimples which I had to seal with epoxy on the roof because the paint looked like it would crack.
Otherwise, it's been 2+ years and I've used the vent perhaps 700 times. People fight over the back seat in the summer for the airflow... and girls, don't sit back there if you just had your hair done.

I definitely was very careful when measuring and cutting. But another way to think about it is: every day I commute to work with idiots on the road who can end my life at any time, putting in the roof vent was totally in my own hands.
Also, I have yet to hear of anyone who totally screwed the pooch putting in their roof vent. For now... :)

Is it super noisy when open? There are 'sweet spots' of loudness when using my windows and other cars sunroofs. I usually adjust according to the least loud that will give me the desired amount of air circulation.

its louder having a window open than the vent by a good amount. i mean theres obviously going to be noise but nothing compared to when the window is down. it also quiets up when both windows are closed (if you have a window open with the vent its louder)

does anyone have the list of part numbers for the kit? my buddy was sold a roof vent kit on here but it was missing the rubber weather stripping piece.
sigh...why do we nasiocers screw each other over.

Theres a good chance that the gasket was siliconed onto the roof, possibly ruining it trying to take it off. I wouldnt say your buddy got the shaft. Personally I'd rather have a new gasket on there so I know it wont leak water.

I put a little black silicone in mine. Its never coming off, so i'd rather have it have extra sealant on it than have it leak water.

You can open it on the highway, just do so in a controlled manner. Don't let it "pop" open and stress/break the plastic handle.

The writing on the roof vent says:
warning for operation of roof ventilator do not operate roof vent while going faster than 80km/hr (aka 50 mph)

i guess there is no use in doing this if you have a yakima roof rack w/ shield ;)
I'd like to see someone with both and maybe a notch in the shield.... where the roof vent is..
