Ya, the main point is to not let it just "snap" open... I mean, the part is standard on the Spec C Impreza, which goes faster than 50 mph.
I've had it open around 85 mph. Other people on the forums have had it open at higher speeds I'm sure.

I've definitely cruised at 70-75 MPH on the HWY, on a daily basis when I had my 06 STI with a roof vent. And cruised at about 75-85 MPH in desert drives with no issues what so ever. It is scary at first, because you're worried, but it holds just fine.

Correct. Operate means open or close the vent. I have had it open while on the track at 110 mph with no issues.

This.
Would it make any sense that this is a rally vent that wasn't made to hold at speeds faster than 50 mph?

Hi! Please help... 6 month ago i bought JDM roof vent. At that time i did not know that its from GC8. Few days ago bougth mounting bracket from Japanparts. Turns out, that spec-c (GD) roof vent hinges is wider than GC8 Type-RA roof vent hinges. So i have two optoins now. Expensive one and risky one...
Expensive- i could buy another roof vent this time from Spec-c and it will fit with spec-c mounting bracket...
Risky- I could buy GC8 roof vent mounting bracket, and try to make it fit on GD.
Any ideas?

i have been told a gc8 vent will work on a GD, but the headliner trim piece will not fit correctly
if your good with fiber glass you could build your own interior trim.
i have thought about going that route on my car because a $450 vent is somewhat rediculous. badass, but rediculous

I installed mine last week, but i didn't used the kit. I managed to get my hands on a genuine vent from a type-r.
The downside of a second hand kit is that the headliner already has a shape cut out. Therefor you have to mark the hole from the inside of the car. But you don't want to be cutting the hole from the inside because it wil give a lot of debris in the car.
I came up with a little trick to do this:

First install only the headliner, push it up (a centimeter max) and use a pencil to draw a line in the hole.

Then you make a template form a piece of carboard or something and tape it exactly in the markings you made before. Then drill three holes in a triangular shape.

Use three screws to bolt down the template on top of the car. This way the template is exactly at the same place as on the inside. Success guaranteed :)

Do you really think a small piece of stamped steel and a plastic interior bit would cost $450+ if it weren't rare?
I still really want one of these, but I can't justify the cost. I'd rather buy new struts or something..

Mounting bracket, trim piece, weather strip is new parts from Japanparts.com
Vent and lock is used and came out of crashed 1998 Type-RA
Only modification i did is drilled new bolt holes in mounting bracket.
Type-RA vent has wider hinges.
After that everything bolted nicely.
Total cost 300$
you dont have to remove the map light bracket. well, i didnt at least. i'd say just leave it be.
very good tips though that i would also recommend. i love my vent. no problems here either, 2 years in, snow/rain/ice and its still perfect.
Actually, this is very correct. You are not supposed to remove the maplight bracket. It is a waste of time to do so; you can damage the roof; and it adds structural reinforcement to the vent-kit frame.
The vent-kit frame is designed to mount to the maplight bracket. For those of you that have done the install, did you happen to notice the two smaller phillips-head screws supplied in the kit and the two small holes, one oval (LH) and one round (RH) in the vent-kit frame that align exactly with the maplight bracket mounting screw holes?
The maplight bracket helps to reinforce the frame and the roof so that everytime you open and close the vent, you don't keep flexing the vent-kit frame up towards the roof and put unnecessary stress on it.
Regardless of what you have already done or choose to do, this reply is meant to be informative in nature and nothing more.
I actually after making my template and tracing the vent trim i placed the template on the under side of the roof. Lined it up with what i had just traced from the vent trim and drilled 2 holes up through the template that were centered about 3 inches apart. From there i stuck the drill bit up through one of the holes and placed the tempate on the drill bit since it now has holes in it from drilling up through it. And then lined up the other one so light was coming into the cabin from the little hole and so that i could see through both. Held the template down and traced it.
Celtic Motorsport (they may or may not have this available, but the link still works and you had a choice of seven colors): http://www.celticmotorsport.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=21_179_197_369&products_id=1536
I ordered mine from Celtic Motorsport in June and got it in August - they needed to effectively fill a cargo container so I waited an extra month.
Subaru has now stopped making them. As supply goes down, the cost is going up. When I first got my car in 2006, they were running 210 for the kit. I got lucky and found one for 350 about 3 months ago. Most supplies have dried up at this point.
im glad i only had to pay 300 shipped for mine back in 2007...
plus i was in japan at the time..so shipping was easy! HAHA:ritz::ritz:
