There is a genuine Subaru piece to cover it. They usually sell for 50 bucks because it's ugly, riceroni, and makes you look like you're trying too hard. Look in the classifieds.

They're about as popular as the morette taillights.

Very hard to find. They don't make these anymore. Try ebay or call online vendors that sold them.
573 06-08-2011 09:52 AM

I put one of these in the other day. My only regret is not buying one sooner.

Wagon looks good dude!
is that suede headliner? looks good!
Yep. The wrap was mostly prompted by the map light cutout extending beneath the roof vent trim. I thought the gap was ugly so I filled it in and wrapped the entire headliner. If anybody decides to do this, I strongly advise that you not use 3M 90 spray adhesive. I did this two days ago, and the adhesive is already starting to let go in a number of spots. The ridiculously hot weather may have something to do with it, but still, this sucks.
JasonC 06-27-2011 09:23 AM

I just wanted to say thanks for this thread. Dealer was going to charge me $600 to remove roof rails/antenna and put them back on after I had someone wrap the roof in gloss black. I really needed the antenna removed for a clean install. So I removed rails/antenna and put everything back on myself - antenna was a bitch but putting it all back together was a breeze. Best part was paying myself $600 lol!!!

So does this mean that the roof vent is available or compatible with the 2008-2011's?
Quadsbc 10-12-2011 09:27 AM

I don't see a roof vent. Maybe he's lost?

Maybe this thread helped him with info about removing headliner etc. so he could get at the stuff he needed to remove ??

100% compatable. I bought an Aspen white scoop, made for 02 - 07 but fits 08 +

I installed one on my 08 STi a few years back.

Installed one of these on my GC8 a little bit ago. The install is a bit harder than the GD because there is two brackets to line up rather than one, I decided to go ahead and do it myself. It came out nice, I love this mod. On a side note 2.5rs people are out of luck due to the fact that all USDM 2.5rs come with a sunroof(unless you replace the roof panel with one from an L).

Am I the only one who thinks these kits are grossly overpriced? I'm all about quality, uniqueness, and one of a kind parts that not everyone has, but common! At the end of the day its just a few pieces of injection molded plastic. And I know its JDM blah blah blah but even still its not like these things are in super high demand. I've seen a bunch of them on the internet but have never seen a suby with one in real life!

Rant over.

To be honest, this kit is not grossly overpriced. Anytime you buy something that is OEM, it's going to cost more, as everyone who's been to the dealership knows. In this case, the only kit available is OEM. Demand has nothing to do with it. The price has been nearly static since the kit was released; the only significant fluctuation has been the JPY/USD exchange rate.

If I wanted to cut a hole in my roof strictly for air flow, yes, I could buy a generic $100 vent and rivet it into my roof. But my car is a street car, not a dedicated, stripped-out rally car. So for a premium, I chose to buy a kit that will flawlessly blend in with my interior, won't leak, and won't detract from the value of my car.

For a color-matched vent lid, stamped bracket, weather seal, interior trim (which is the only piece that is injection molded plastic), and all required fasteners, this is in no way a bad deal. The only thing hurting it is the current exchange rate, so if you got it 4-5 years ago for $350 you got a great deal.

I can honestly say this is one of my favorite mods to date, so I have to defend it. :D I'm not trying to be arguementative, just trying to set the record straight and bring up some points I think you guys may have overlooked.

JDM Rally Roof Vent
Has anybody install it in 2011 STI sedan yet ?
davidmount 11-10-2011 06:20 AM

Always loved the way these thing looked, to afraid to install it though.
ApexPred8r 12-04-2011 09:54 AM

Awsum! I want one soooooooo bad!!!!!!!!!!!!! I let a 05 aspen white spec c get away last year.I've wanted a roof vent ever since.
YZ86 12-04-2011 01:59 PM

Must to do this on my car this winter! :)
Does anyone know where can I get the roof vent for good price?
Caleb 6R 12-04-2011 02:46 PM

quick question- Any way to keep the map lights? I believe my bluetooth mic and map light are all in the same spot.
02boxer 12-04-2011 03:58 PM

the oe one's I don't think so. The next best option, which if I ever decide to part with this cash, grab a rear view mirror with built in lights like the cipa 36301
Quadsbc 12-04-2011 09:36 PM

No way to keep the map lights. Either do what 02boxer said or install some led's with a push button switch.
Caleb 6R 12-04-2011 09:54 PM

Humm, maybe i'll do it, relocate my blue tooth mic, and do some leds right in the roof vent.
Quadsbc 12-04-2011 09:57 PM

Should be pretty simple, the power wires are already there just need some led's and a switch. I've thought about doing it but I don't really use it enough. The dome light with a led swap is bright enough for me.

If its going to be a Rally car you might want to consider http://www.writerguy.com/primitive/body.htm

The Vent on this one is $89.
jiml3ol3 05-10-2012 05:00 PM

There's a used aw roof vent for sale on eBay. Going for $400.
02boxer 05-10-2012 05:55 PM

nice price...they are easy to cover in vinyl too;)
MY EJ20TTTTTT 06-21-2012 05:48 PM

I paid $349 for mine, 5 years ago. granted it took 2 months to get to the US...
The Duke 06-22-2012 08:56 AM

So how does that gasket work over time? Does the factory RA vent have bare metal (I assume it's painted then the gasket is put in place).

Has anyone had any issues with moisture/rust where the cut was?
02boxer 06-23-2012 12:31 AM

there is a sealant where the rubber meets the metal.....although you should take the extra step of putting a bit of caulk or pain on the bare metal. Quick, painless...easy to do
jcbluescooby 07-21-2012 08:12 PM

the cut is covered by the rubber gasket and overlaps it by a good half an inch or so..ive done this to 3 cars including my wrx like 4 years ago..leaks will NEVER be a problem unless the installer f**** up somehow which is nearly impossible..the only place i would put a sealant for extra precaution is the 4 screws on the hood vent itself that go into the roof of the car
Big-E 07-21-2012 09:47 PM

Part of taking your time to do this install is to coat the exposed metal with touch-up primer, twice, and then a top-coat of touch-up paint. This means the large opening for the vent and the four holes for the mounting studs.

A suggestion is to obtain butyl-caulking, knead it down to cover the opening edge and then install the weatherstrip (or knead it down to insert into the weatherstrip opening and then install it).

Here's a link to 3m: http://3mcollision.com/3m-strip-calk-08578-black.html

WelDun1 09-20-2013 04:37 AM

Did the seal stay tight even after you cut it? Because my seal is bigger than the hole as well. I'm kinda sketched about cutting the seal tho. I can always buy a new one, but I'm trying to avoid all that.
Rexbot 05-29-2014 08:17 AM

I see some WRC roof scoops from time to time-- are they made to fit over the roof vent? (Just confirming before I decide to buy one)
Big-E 05-29-2014 08:33 AM
I see some WRC roof scoops from time to time-- are they made to fit over the roof vent? (Just confirming before I decide to buy one)
Yes, if it is a specific item and not a "one size fits all", but this will require additional mounting holes drilled through the roof.
sal_86 07-13-2014 10:42 PM

Sorry for the noob question but the purpose of this is what? This like the vents on say a bus? Just to allow air into the vehicle to cool the interior? Well looks alright but I think I'll stick to my ac. But love detailed write ups like this.
