Editor-in-Chief Csaba Csere will be at the wheel of a Subaru WRX STi part 1

MARKGSTI 11-30-2005 01:01 AM

Car and Driver/ESX/TCD 25 Hours of Thunderhill with a Wicked WRX STI
I got that from a page on Car and Driver website.....about the up coming 25 hours of Thunderhill.

OK...last year SHIV from Vishnu Perfromance systems built a EVO for C&D...it blew up a few times and didn't do so well...

I'm sure the C&D staff would not go out there to race a normal/privately owned car...as the other two cars they are runnin are owned/built by Honda of Amercia and Gale Banks.

So fess up....what shop/tuner had built this beast???..I know its out there.

We want some more info.
mpj_becks 11-30-2005 01:07 AM

A combination of shops had their hand in the overall setup of the car from what I heard it is a ESX/PDX/TC Designs car with a nice little setup (looked great on the dyno this weekend).

I just pulled the starting lineup from the NASA website..lists ESX/TCD and C&D with a 2005 Subaru.

I wish them the best of luck and hope they do well. :disco:

Man... 25 hours on a track with an STi... Lucckkkkyyyy!!!!
bemani 11-30-2005 02:44 AM

Wow it's this coming weekend!
speedyHAM 11-30-2005 08:34 AM

I hope the turbo holds up. Between the problems they had with it last year and the problems ESX had at the Tuner Challenge- luck with Turbo's is not that groups strong point.

Good luck to them.

Cool Gary. Can you provide any more information on the car's setup?
GarySheehan 11-30-2005 04:04 PM

Ohlin 3-way struts, Stoptech 355 fronts, Stoptech custom 325 rear rotors, Pagid Endurance pads, lots of power with 3 preset on-the-fly driver selectable maps, 32 gallon fuel cell, serious custom cage, big Perrin front mount intercooler, Cusco aluminum bellypan with custom aluminum splitter, custom rear swaybar, lots of odds and ends from everywhere. Car weighs about 2800 lbs. Should be lots of fun!

knowing car and driver theyll probably be too busy testing the cup holders and climate control ergonomics to even bother racing.

quite the team there. it sure would be tough to hand over the keys to a 14 year old kid, even though i'm sure he has more track time than most of us. on second thought, it would be a media magnet.

built to speed WC specs. is it going to hit any events in '06?

Sorta like Team 16 at Daytona 24 last year.

The Racers Group Porsche GT3RS run by 3 16 year olds (lucky kids) and Ross Bentley.

They had a strong result staying out of trouble the entire race.

They weren't allowed to drive a golf cart in the paddock though. Had to be over 18 for that.

I wonder what's the theory about front wings.... looks pretty funny.
psg 12-03-2005 12:21 AM

The team's site has been updated with a couple of pictures and results from qualifying.

They're 4th on the grid, 3rd in class for tomorrow's race, which starts at 7AM PST. Race weather is looking to be completely dry for the entire 25 hours, and temperatures should be ideal for endurance racing.
AlpineFD 12-03-2005 01:22 AM

there are wings on the fender?
GarySheehan 12-03-2005 01:40 AM

Yep, we qualified 4th overall and pretty proud of it. Interesting note, the steering wheel was way off and handling sucked while I was out for quali. Turns out that the left rear turnbuckle of our adjustable lateral link loosened up. 3/4" of toe-in on the driver's side! I wonder how well we could've done if the rear tires were pointed straight down the track!

Looks like the driver order has changed and I'll be in the driver's seat for the start of the 25 Hour. I'll be focusing on getting though turn 1 safe and just knocking out some solid laps for 2 hours.

The race starts at 11am pst tomorrow. The DAY starts at 7am pst for the crew :) Drivers get to sleep in a bit more

Keep your eyes on www.justracing.com/25hour for updates. The team has really come together. Our 14 year old is pretty quick, too. But he's not allowed to ride a Razor around the paddock.

"Merde" to all of you as we would say in French. :D (i.e good luck)
MARKGSTI 12-03-2005 12:00 PM

Looks like its gonna be a nice a cool/cold 25 hours of Thunderhill with no rain in sight.

Rock on
psg 12-03-2005 04:01 PM

Race has been underway for a couple of hours now. Gary's stint should be over soon. Starting grid had a Toyota Spec Racer on the pole (a prototype-like car, by far the fastest), and two Porsche 911 team cars in P2 & P3. A Porsche 911 won the race in dominant fashion last year. It's going to be interesting to see if the SFR car can last 25 hours.

The Justracing site has been updated, with the STi holding a strong 4th.
GarySheehan 12-03-2005 09:34 PM

Hey Everyone,

We're just about 7 1/2 hours into the 25 Hour race and things are going well. Csaba Csere is nearing the end of his stint and Dale Sievright is about to take over.

We're currently in 3rd place overall behind a Porsche and a BMW. The car is running really strong. We are running on the stock wastegate spring only in order to save the engine, so we're only at 9psi of boost since the start of the race. We have a LOT of power in our back pocket when we need it.

I'll be getting back into the car around 9pm tonight. I'll try and get back here to post up some more info shortly.

I think there might be some in-car video up on the Car and Driver web site really late tonight.

Sounds like the team is in an excellent position to make a charge once the sun comes up. Keep it up, guys. How are the laptimes compared to the 911's?

And is the team running the rally lightpod for the night stints?
mnavarro 12-04-2005 12:30 AM

Congrats, you guys are running a really smart race, hopefully I will be there in the morning to see you open a can a whoopass on the remaining field...
BROKENWRX 12-04-2005 02:50 AM

Well were are now at the half way point and things are going very well. We have lost a about 13 laps because of: a tire puncture, a vibration in the front because of a wheel weight flapping about and a stuck gas pedal so the car would not rev.

We are as gary said on 9psi, thats about 260-270 whp. In the morning gary will bve doing a final 3 hour stint, the car will be given new tyres and full boost, about 460-470 whp.

This has been a very great first outing for the car, and I dont belive that we could have asked for more. Big thank you to all our sponors, our crew and most of all our drivers.

I will try to keep all of thouse interested as time permits.

Jamie.
MARKGSTI 12-04-2005 06:57 AM

The car looks/sounds great.
The drivings even better.

Good job on the pit stops.

Try to keep warm.

It looks like its coming together nicely:banana:
joey1313 12-04-2005 09:46 AM

Anymore updates?
BROKENWRX 12-04-2005 09:54 AM

We went as far down as 6th and 20 laps down on first through the night.

Now back in 3rd, 5 laps from 2nd, 6 laps from 1st.

The car is still on 10 psi and runing very strong. 4th is 6 laps down on us, so things are positive.

5 hours to go!!!!

The STI is on track to have completed 1800 miles by the 25 hour mark.

Jamie
joey1313 12-04-2005 10:02 AM

The STi seems to really be holding up alot better than last years C&D Evo. :D WOOHOO for reliability.

1800/25 = 72 MPH average.

I'm going to guess that Thunderhill is a pretty slow course. Good going guys. :)
psg 12-04-2005 01:07 PM

Man, I wish there was a radio broadcast or at least a live timing and scoring applet for the race, like they do for the Rolex races. Very exciting stuff.

Get that overall win guys!
Patrick Olsen 12-04-2005 01:54 PM
1800/25 = 72 MPH average.

Thunderhill is most definitely not a slow track. Check the track records here - http://www.thunderhill.com/timingrecords.pdf - for SCCA events and you'll see average speeds over 100mph for some classes. That's approaching Willow Springs territory, and WS is renowned as a fast track.

Keep in mind this is an endurance race. To win, you must finish, and to finish, you must keep your car in one piece for 25hr straight. Add in a number of pit stops, driver changes, the 20 laps they lost (roughly 40min from that alone) and the 72mph starts to look more reasonable.

Well done to the team, hope everything finishes up well!

Pat Olsen
'97 Legacy 2.5GT sedan

Edit: Just checked the Justracing.com website, and depending on the driver they've been running anywhere from 2:03s to 2:08s - 85-87mph average. They didn't list lap times for Gary, nor do they have any lap times listed now that they've upped the boost for the final stints.
rkkwan 12-04-2005 02:12 PM

I just looked up the database. Pat Olsen's best time at Thunderhill is 2:26.940. (2002 OTC)

Gary's best time in the same event in the USTCC '02 WRX is 2:05:329.
DriftnWRX 12-04-2005 03:53 PM

but seriously though, can someone explain the theory on the fender winglets??
Draken 12-04-2005 04:36 PM

I've run pretty consistently in the 2:03 to 2:04 range with my STi at Thunderhill, including the Cyclone. The occasional 2:02 when chasing a friend in a Z06, and of course 2:08 or so when in traffic. Stock turbo, but decent suspension and R comp tires. Though this is only during some track days, in an intermediate group with point byes on the straights.

Great job on 3rd overall!

Chris H.
joey1313 12-04-2005 04:45 PM

Congrats!!!! 3rd overall is very impressive.
elucas730 12-04-2005 04:55 PM

Awesome job guys!
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts about the car's performance
mnavarro 12-04-2005 07:40 PM

I was there and witnessed the results. The sti was running 2:02s and finished 3rd place overall. Considering that the car was running 9psi, and didn't even have camber plates or anything the car performed extremely well. I think this car could go a lot faster once it's sorted. Big congratulations to the teams that put this together! The fastest lap time for the team was 1:59...
DriftnWRX 12-04-2005 08:56 PM

very impressive, looking forward to the write-up in C&D!
rkkwan 12-04-2005 09:14 PM
very impressive, looking forward to the write-up in C&D!
Yes, congratulations to all involved.

However, C&Ds are (in)famous for its writings of all the mishaps/adventures. I think the Subaru may be too reliable for a good story. ;)
Patrick Olsen 12-05-2005 03:05 AM

Were they running the bypass at turn 5, or were they going up over the hill?

3rd place is pretty damn good an apparently hastily-sorted car. Well done to the entire team!

Pat
