Speaking of JPM...
Montoya enters Talladega ARCA race

Wednesday, September 27th 2006, 22:50 GMT

Juan Pablo Montoya will make his stock car racing debut in just over a week's time at Talladega Superspeedway, his team Chip Ganassi Racing announced today.

Montoya will drive the No. 4 Texaco/Havoline Dodge in the ARCA RE/MAX Series on Friday, October 6, in the Food World 250.

The Colombian, who announced last July he is switching to NASCAR racing and leaving Formula One, has been testing at Talladega this week with Ganassi for the first time.

And, speaking of his first experience around the tri-oval Talladega circuit, Montoya was ecstatic.

"It was like, oh my God!" he exclaimed, when asked to describe the experience. "I came out of the pits, and I went into Turns 3 and 4.

"I just went full throttle and went into it. It felt pretty quick; it moves a lot more than what I'm used to."

Chip Ganassi has made it clear he would like Montoya to enter as many races as possible this year, before embarking on his full Nextel Cup season next year, in the No. 42 Dodge charger.
Not to go OT but: After watching the last few CART races, which are action packed, JPM/Sebastian (sp)/Wilson/PT would be an ABSOLUTE BLAST to watch every weekend.

Can you imagine, on the same track as PT, we'll finally get to see is JPM can throw a punch!

It would be funny if JPM does podium.

Fisi? Rubens? Rosberg?

I think Alonso is starting to crack under the pressure Micheal has applied. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not seeing the same World Champion driver that started the season.

I think a lot of that is because we're not seeing the same R26 that started the season.

Agreed.
Ferrari gains the wheel frizbees and Renault loses the mass dampners. One seems very illegal and the other is questionable at best. I hate conspiracy theories but this season seems to be at least leaning in one direction IHMO.

This season is becoming extremely entertaining here close to the end. Schumi retiring, Renault engines no longer bullet proof, BMW Sauber gaining ground, open seats for next year...

My picks:
F.Alonso
M.Schumacher
G.Fisichella
K.Raikkonen
P.Rosa
J.Button
J.Trulli
R.Barrichello

I really have no idea, I just don't want Schumacher to win.

Nuts! China is far away, isn't it? I missed the deadline, again.

Here's my leftovers...

M.Schumacher
F.Massa
F.Alonso
G.Fisichella
J.Button
P.Rosa
M.Webber
N.Heidfeld

I'd have rather had Kimi up there in second, and Massa down a couple. Probably swap Fisi and Button, too. Ah well, I can't catch up this year anyway, unless Matt, Scott, and Michael get penalized for being late, push too hard, and blow their next choices, finishing with no points. ;)

Fisi? I don't see him handling pressure too well. He's got a decent car, but he's been a sub-par #2 when compared to Massa.

Rubens has a chance. IF he's on one of his better weekends. Rosberg? He's a Finn, and he's my blood. BUT, I see the engine assploding. If it holds, then he'll have a chance to score up to 3 points. But hey, I could be smoking crack and talking to the underpants gnomes;).
Wurz fastest in practice 1 - China

By Tim Collings Friday, September 29th 2006, 04:06 GMT

Alex Wurz topped the times on a dull and dreary start to the Chinese Grand Prix on Friday morning.

Grey skies and a sparse crowd greeted the drivers who took part in Friday morning's opening practice session for Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit.

The dreary weather, humid and warm as well as overcast, seemed to hang heavily over the teams and there was no sign of any urgency to signal that this weekend's contest could prove decisive in the scrap for the world championship.

Both championship challengers, Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher took no part in the session until the final minutues.

They both looked set to do preparation laps, leaving the battle for the top of the time sheet to Anthony Davidson in a Honda and Alex Wurz in a Williams, with the Austrian ending on top.

There were a few off-track excursions, contributed by Franck Montagny in his Super Aguri Honda, Wurz, Neel Jani in a Toro Rosso Cosworth, and Michael Ammermuller in his Red Bull Ferrari, but all regained the ashphalt.

Only in the closing minutes did the big names rise towards the top when Jenson Button clocked the third best time for Honda, ahead of Schumacher's Ferrari.

As if to brighten up the proceedings, Ferrari-bound Finn Kimi Raikkonen went out and spun his McLaren Mercedes at Turn 7, with only two minutes remaining, but he managed to regain control and complete his lap.

At the end, Wurz topped the times ahead of Davidson, Button and Schumacher, but there was nothing to be learned from the session that gave any clues to the outcome of the weekend or the championship.
Massa hit with engine change

Friday, September 29th 2006, 07:35 GMT

Brazilian Felipe Massa's chances in the Chinese Grand Prix have taken a hit after his Ferrari team had to change his engine after practice.

Although he was the quickest of the racing drivers, Massa covered just eight laps in this afternoon's second practice session.

The penalty means Massa will lose ten grid positions in Sunday's race.
anyways, is it going to rain? i checked the forecast for shanghai and i'm confused with the days. it says 40% chance of precipatation for tomorrow which i assume is race day. i actually want to see schuei win and alonso get 2nd. a tie with 2 GPs left would be great.

EDIT:

There was less blue, but they did run 555 livery, and everyone had SWRT look-alike fire suits.

i believe honda ran a blue car in 03 as well. I believe its just in China because Lucky Strike isnt sold there but 555 is, so they advertise that. Suits definitely looks like SWRT minus the corona forearms.

im hoping for a schumi win. dont care to make my picks cuz theyre late anyway, so ill stick with schumacher winning and not worry about the rest, because that wont matter.
...The bridgestones were looking like crap during practice, I think its a bit to early to say they showed up...
Boy! Ain't that the truth! It looks like the only way B'Stones can win is if it does not rain.

Looking at the wet qualifying results, it is Michelins on the top half of the grid, and Bridgestones on the bottom half, w/Michael being the only exception. Ugly!

So if it is a rainy race, then we could look for Michelins all over the front, w/B'Stones sliding around at the bottom of the field.

But if it stops, or is not raining, the B'Stone teams will be early to switch to dries, since B'Stone slicks appear to be superior on a damp track.

It will be a lottery...

If you're a Ferrari fan, a small amount of good news is that Spyker did not get Albers car to the weigh bridge in a timely manner, so Albers was penalized and has been moved to the back of the grid. So now one less car for Massa to pass, and Massa moves up from the 11th to the 10th row of the grid.

The Fastest Michelin Rain Runners @ Hungary
...I'm not sure Button is in the top 3-5 guys on Mich's in the rain...let alone the fastest...
Button is definetly top 5, if not top 3 in the rain, based on an analysis of laptimes @ Hungary.

In the rain, conditions and therefore laptimes, vary lap by lap. So after Hungary, I looked at who was the fastest driver on the track on a lap by lap basis. Here are the Michelin runners who were fastest on track on any given lap in the 2006 Hungarian GP:

Raikkonen = 7 laps fastest man on course (crashed on lap 26)
Alonso = 14 laps fastest man on course (crashed on lap 52)
Button = 12 laps fastest man on course
de la Rosa = 8 laps fastest man on course
Kubica = 4 laps fastest man on course

If anyone is interested in the spreadsheet, IM me.

Do you really think, given the amount and duration of the rain, that is an accurate interpretation? I think just under half of the race was damp/dry and not considered wet/rain at all.

You would definately have to have data on just the wet laps before you can draw those conclusions....

And you can't just look to one race...

Just because Fisi wasn't running well, doesn't mean he isn't VERY good in the wet, based on a race that was 1/2 wet.

The fact that he's sitting on the front line in China makes him VERY good in the wet. He's a better driver than most people give him credit for.
