F1, Round Two, Grand Prix of Malaysia 2006 part 2

I am Frakk 03-15-2006 04:25 PM

I have to say after Kimi's spectacular drive this past weekend I have to go with him so here is my picks...

Kimi
Alonso
Button
MS
Montoya
Fisi
Massa
Webber
XenoWolf 03-15-2006 06:54 PM

Rain will totally screw my picks up.. dammit! :(
Ferg 03-15-2006 06:55 PM

I'm throwing in with Kevin on this one.

N.Rosberg
J.Button
R.Barrichello
K.Raikkonen
F.Alonso
J.Montoya
M.Webber
M.Schumacher

I think the hot temperatures and a hopefully dry race will play into Williams hands. They can run the softer Bridgestone tire (Ferrari and Toyota can't or won't) and have plenty of power from the Cossie. Plus no one seems to want to tell Rosberg he shouldn't be winning Grand Prixs...

:)
ArtGecko 03-15-2006 07:16 PM

This is going to be so fun to watch!

K.Raikkonen
M.Schumacher
F.Alonso
J.Button
J.Montoya
R.Barrichello
J.Trulli
N.Rosberg

Jarno was an error. It was supposed to be Massa. (Hey, they're close.) We'll see how JT does.

[QUOTE]Wurz fastest in practice 1 - Malaysia

Friday, March 17th 2006, 04:11 GMT

Austrian Alex Wurz won the battle of the test drivers by topping the times in the first practice session for the Malaysian Grand Prix on Friday.

In what pass for cool conditions at Sepang with the trackside temperature a modest 36 degrees Celsius (96.80F), many top drivers preferred to sit out most if not all of the session to preserve their engines, which will be running for a second race on Sunday.

Portuguese Tiago Monteiro had the worst possible start to his weekend when his Midland ground to a halt on the trackside grass 40 minutes into the session.

Wurz drove his Williams around the 5.5km circuit in one minute 34.946 seconds, 0.787 seconds faster than BMW's Robert Kubica and more than a second faster than Honda's Anthony Davidson.

Wurz's pace will be another boost for Williams after their surprise success at having both race drivers score points in the season-opening race in Bahrain last week.

None of Friday's top trio will race on Sunday and of those who will be on the grid, McLaren's Colombian driver Juan Pablo Montoya was quickest with a lap of 1:36.709 for fourth place on the time charts.

Among the four cars starting with new engines this weekend - and losing 10 places on the grid as a result - will be Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

The Brazilian put in the most laps (18) of the top race drivers and managed the seventh fastest time, while his team mate Michael Schumacher recorded the sixth fastest time on one of his four laps.

World champion Fernando Alonso and his Renault team mate Giancarlo Fisichella remained in the garage for the first of Friday's two practice sessions.

[QUOTE]Davidson on top in practice 2 - Malaysia

Friday, March 17th 2006, 07:07 GMT

Honda's Anthony Davidson knocked fellow test driver Alex Wurz off the top of the timesheets in Friday's second practice for Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix.

The Briton spun off early in the session but put in a blistering late lap to beat the Austrian, quickest in the first session for Williams, with a lap of 1:35.041 as the temperature rose at the Sepang circuit.

World champion Fernando Alonso, who won the Formula One season-opener in Bahrain last weekend, was quickest among the race drivers in 1:35.806 after 14 laps in the Renault.

He was closely followed by Ferrari's Felipe Massa.

McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen was next fastest ahead of Alonso's teammate Giancarlo Fisichella with Ferrari's seven times champion Michael Schumacher and Honda's Jenson Button seventh and eighth respectively.

Juan Pablo Montoya, the quickest of the race drivers in the first session, was clearly in a hurry to get his season going after a fifth place finish in the season-opener last week.

Halfway through the hour, his McLaren stopped in the pitlane and the Colombian was so eager to get it to the garage he dragged it back himself.

He later spun off and was able to post only the 14th quickest time.

Many top drivers preferred to sit out most if not all of the first session to preserve their engines, which will be running for a second race on Sunday.

You must have been dreaming Kevin, although it's certainly in the realm of possibilities.

Japanese drivers do have problems with safety cars...didn't Ide's boss Suzuki actually get run over by the safety car at Monaco many years ago?

Then later that same season he got hit by a marshall's car at Hungary...

[QUOTE]Schumacher top practice 3 - Malaysia

Saturday, March 18th 2006, 04:05 GMT

Michael Schumacher continued his and Ferrari's revival on Saturday morning when he topped the times in final practice for Sunday's Malaysian Grand Prix.

The seven-times world champion clocked a best time of one minute and 34.126 seconds. His lap was challenged late in the session by Renault's Fernando Alonso, who clocked a rapid 1:34.180 in the final seconds.

But the German remained the fastest man, ahead of the defending world champion and his teammate Giancarlo Fisichella.

The track temperature rose from 41 degrees Celsius to 43 degrees during the first half hour of the session, in which the air temperature remained 35 degrees. The humidity hovered around 50 degrees, a welcome improvement on previous days.

The first major incident came after only 12 minutes, when the luckless Tiago Monteiro went off the circuit at turn six in his MF1-Toyota, but without suffering any serious mishap.

For the Portuguese driver it was simply a continuation of the unfortunate weekend he appeared to be suffering, having been beset by fuel problems and back pains on Friday.

As the field settled down, Fisichella took over at the top of the timesheets in his Renault. The Italian did not stay at the top for long, however.

Soon after he had set the pace, the red Ferrari of Schumacher sped through the shade on the main straight to set the fastest time of the morning after 23 minutes of frenzied effort.

The Ferrari driver stayed on top until his brother Ralf, in his Toyota, took over as the pacesetter three minutes later.

The fastest times in the relatively cool conditions, even if it was still very hot, indicated that the cars were closer to their limits.

After Christian Klien in his Red Bull-Ferrari had set a best time of 1:34.815 to take command, with the quickest lap of the weekend at that time, Schumacher resumed what was once regarded as normal service.

In a lap of 1:34.126, he was six-tenths of a second faster, quicker still than Klien and setting standards that the rest had to match.

By this stage, with 14 minutes remaining and the sun still rising, the field was led by Schumacher followed by Klien, Kimi Raikkonen in his McLaren-Mercedes and Ralf Schumacher. David Coulthard in his Red Bull Ferrari, equipped with a new engine, was fifth.

But it did not stay like that.

After both Felipe Massa, in his Ferrari, and then Klien, in his Red Bull, slid off the track at turns 13 and 11 respectively - the Brazilian spinning into the gravel, but the Austrian steering himself just away from such trouble - Jenson Button slotted in a fast time for Honda that lifted him to second, within half a second of Schumacher's best time until Alonso''s late effort.
