My .02 on quali...
1) Nico Rosberg friggin rules! There is something in that water over there in Finland (and yes, I know he races under the German flag, but he's got the Finnish blood - so I'll go with that). Not only was I impressed with his driving performance, but I had never heard the kid speak until today. He is quite well spoken and his English skills are IMO the best in the field of the non-English primary drivers. Only funny thing he did in the interview was push his chair in 42 times at the beginning of the interview!
2) Kudos to Fisi for not calling his car f*****g s**t this week during the interview.
3) Kimi, JPM, Alonso - big fuel? I think so.
4) TWO engine changes for Massa. Man - the kid is SOL. Makes me sad... Even though I hate the big red, Massa is a helluva nice guy, and I'd like to see him do well.
Can't wait for the race!!

My prediction: I have a feeling that right from the beginning, Raikonnen is going to charge the crap out of the front rows. Rosberg will get caught off guard and Button won't be skilled enough to hold him off. Alonso will join suit soon after. Schumacher will get held up in mid field and end 5th place. I am actually bad at predicting this kind of crap. hahaha
I realllyyyy hope that Honda can take its first win here.

anyone hear about what he did?
i remember reading sumwhere in the italian newspaper (im italian) that he clocked better times then shumi on the track with the f1 car after his 3rd lap. his first 2 laps he spun out, but then he started setting records
so ferrari is looking into him joining the f1 team

I think I heard in qualifying that they set a record on 10 grid spot penalties due to engine replacements today and even more interesting was a statement by Ross Brawn saying that the testing they did during the winter with the detuned v-10 was all on the same engine.
| KAX | 03-18-2006 05:09 PM |
must have been a record this weekend. I can only think of there being 2 engine changes in one weekend last year. Craziness.
If Nico proves to be a mature racer and doesnt let his rookieness of F1 get to him, i see no reason he cant be pushing for the win today. Maybe a Kimi v. Nico show down weve been looking for? Just this time the more experienced racer can win (in comparison with Alonso v Schumi showdowns) or at least id like that better.

2-rosberg
3-alonso
4-raikonnen
5-schumacher
6-montoya
7-massa
8-klien
- im thinking fisichelia will run into some car troubles again and rosberg and button will be in battle the whole race. i wish i could place ferrari higher, but with the tires being a little more similar than last year, this season is really wide open. it's anybodys title to win, absolutly no favorites after seeing the first race. im rooting for ferrari and honda though, my two teams :disco:

I would like to see button get his first win but he just can't start an f1 race effectively. Everytime he loses positons off the line. Not bashing on the guy cause maybe it is just the Honda engine / launch control but when he has been in positions like this before he always loses like 2-3 positions by the first corner.
Ferrari's front wing draws attention
By Damien Smith Sunday, March 19th 2006, 04:15 GMT
The Sepang paddock has been awash with rumours since yesterday that Ferrari's front wing will go under official FIA investigation.
Ferrari's rear wing drew attention in Bahrain, where it was cleared by the FIA, but now it's the front wing that is causing controversy.
Suggestions have been made by some of Ferrari's rivals that the upper element on the Italians' front wing moves at speed, and the illegal movement could be seen at close-up video.
An FIA spokesman told autosport.com there is no investigation at the moment, while a Ferrari spokesman added: "I don't want to comment on any rumour. If there is a problem, there is procedure through the FIA."
Paddock pundits suggest, however, that a formal protest would only be lodged after the race, and any investigation taking place - if at all - will have to wait until then.

Where MS is makes sense. He is 10 spots back from where he quailified. If he had gone back 10 then up 3 he would have been in 11th spot which would seem against the rules but Ferrari does seem to get the benifit of the doubt in F1.
| artkevin | 03-18-2006 11:57 PM |
So at what point is it impossible to have a movable element? It seems that with as much downforce as F1 elemnets produce it would be damned near impossible to keep a 1/4" thick peice of anything from flexing.
Qualifying fuel allocations - Malaysia
Sunday, March 19th 2006, 04:57 GMT
Following qualifying, the FIA released the number of laps each driver completed in the final qualifying session, and consequently the amount of fuel each driver is allowed to add to his car's fuel tanks before the start of the race:
Driver Team Laps Fuel (kg)
Fisichella Renault (M) 13 36.5
Button Honda (M) 13 36.5
Rosberg Williams-Cosworth (B) 12 34.0
M.Schumacher Ferrari (B) 13 36.5
Webber Williams-Cosworth (B) 12 34.0
Montoya McLaren-Mercedes (M) 12 34.0
Raikkonen McLaren-Mercedes (M) 12 34.0
Alonso Renault (M) 13 36.5
Klien Red Bull-Ferrari (M) 4 11.5
R.Schumacher Toyota (B) 66.2 *
* Ralf Schumacher's figure was provided to the FIA by Toyota prior to the start of the third period of the qualifying session
So the BIG question is how much fuel was in Rosberg's and Webbo's Williams at the start of that third session. Both Williams seemed to be quick right away...did they just drop their times before everyone else did or were they that much lighter at the start...
Also interesting to note is that even with the penalty for an engine change, Michael, having qualified inside the top ten, is still forced to run his original fuel strategy...so much for making the podium.

From F1racing.net... (see Ferg's earlier post - this just confirms it apparently)
Nine teams to mount Ferrari protest
19 March 2006
Nine of the eleven F1 teams have told the FIA this morning that they intend to make a protest after the Malaysian Grand Prix. The teams - everyone except Ferrari and its engine customer Red Bull - will protest against Ferrari's rear wing and front wing flexibility at speed and seek clarification from the FIA on whether they can design similar systems - if they are officially cleared after protest. Watch this space.
wait.... what's that noise? Oh, it must be the sound of a whole bunch of FIA guys turning their heads to look the other way simultaneously...

From crash.net,
Ferrari has agreed to bring modified front and rear wings to the Australian Grand Prix after a bust-up with rival teams on Sunday morning in Malaysia.
Eight teams "everyone except Ferrari allies Red Bull and Toro Rosso" presented a unprecedented letter to the FIA indicating their disquiet, and threatening a protest after the race. During the day, Charlie Whiting met with the teams and discussed their concerns. He also had contact with Ferrari.
As reported earlier, Ross Brawn met with Pat Symonds, Martin Whitmarsh and Geoff Willis to discuss the situation. We can now reveal that, while Brawn initially refused to concede that there was a problem with Ferrari's interpretation, after Jean Todt joined the meeting, a compromise was reached. Brawn reportedly had a dossier of information on wing behaviour on other cars.
Ferrari has now given its assurance to the teams and the FIA that it will bring revised wings to the next race in Australia.
The teams have also reportedly agreed not to protest, whatever the outcome of today's event, although it remains to be seen what actually happens. The FIA has promised to ensure that the Ferrari is fully compliant in all respects when it gets to Melbourne.
This may or may not be the end of the story...
The FIA had better judge Ferrari as harshly as they judged Honda last year. They dragged BAR Honda's name through the gutter last season. Even if it was just 'talk', the FIA threatened to ban Honda from the sport. They also pulled them from two races and levied a sizeable fine. Certainly, if nine teams agree that it is a problem from a team that so far isn't even highly competitive, then it is a problem.
Edit: Now I read it was just a matter of "interpretation". How was Honda's case last year any different?

IIRC, BAR Honda had a secondary gas tank, or a reserve and using it as a means of achieving the weight requirement. That means that when filled up, it would meet the weight requirement. But when it's drained, the reserve is drained as well and the car is wayyy under the minimum weight requirement. This allows a huge weight advantage which in turns compliments acceleration and overall speed of the car (as you see with full load and light loads of fuel).
Every liter of gas counts.
Now I am a big fan of Honda but in my opinion, what Honda did is just cheating. By reducing more weight than allowed by the FIA is serious issues. In my interpretation, Ferrari did break rules, but as far as anyone can tell, they haven't really benefitted a whole lot from it whereas throughout the 2004 and beginning of the 2005 season, both Hondas were extremely quick and were taking podiums. This could be the drivers' skill but given the situation, their victories could very well been assisted by the quicker accleration.

The red cars got away with it this race. The rear wing issue with them is not going to go away so quickly.
A decent race with the cream rising to the top.
Before the season started I poo-pooed the qual format. I will say I was hasty in my opinion and admit it is pretty friken cool. Foot back out of my mouf. :p
The two race engine rule is not good. High attrition numbers does not make for good racing. Give it a year then re-implement this rule.

I was just thinking the same thing. With the development of the new motor for everyone this year, the two race engine rule should be put on hold for a year (or at least half a season) till the development teams can start to make more reliable motors.
