Oh Mika cracked, and very publicly. I seem to recall him having a bit of a cry behind a tree at Monza after throwing it off the track. He wasn't even racing Michael for the Championship, and yet he made a completely unforced error while leading, something Alonso has yet to do. If and when Fernando commits the same mistake I think we can say he's lost it, but for now I'm just enjoying watching him deal with the pressure. The season has certainly come alive. :D
er... I think you misread that article. It was Fisi who stomped off to the motorhome after the race while Fernando hung around for the press.
Yep, 1999 Italian GP, he tried his best to give away the championship to Irvine (when Ferrari wasn't doing their best to keep him from getting it also)

Was gonna have FA and Fisi back at the top when I heard the news about the dampers. I decided to wait for Qualifying, but there's no question as to who has it this weekend.
Schumi
Massa
Kimi
Trulli
Button
Fisi
PDLR
Speed
I'm not taking Speed off until he gets a point.
How in the hell can you penalise a guy 3 times for 1 offense? I only saw the 1st half of practice but now I have to go home and watch it. It had better be bad.
It wasn't anything dramatic! If Alonzo didn't pump his fist, no one would even notice.
But I think he'll only be penalized 1 time - it'd be difficult for him to get out of the first group :furious: He might as well go do an engine change or 2 while at it.

Well, according to the guys on Speed, looks like ol' MS is going to be joining Freddy at the back of the grid for similar asshattery in this morning's practice.... [Nelson voice] HAHA
If this is true - Kimi - it is yours to throw away this weekend baby!!!
EDIT - They just announced the penalty for Michael. Same as Freddy..... Well, at least they are being consistent. Looks like the stewards got some sand in their giners this weekend....

correct.
Or how about we just let pratice be practice and let them race man to man on Sunday.
The FIA has now setup the supreme drama of watching these two great drivers slice there way through the field. This is inherently dangerous, esp when points now are at a premium.
Strategy dictates FA shadowing MS allowing him to go first and paving the way.

I don't agree with negating FA's penalty. The stewards are taking a hard line against this sort of douchbagery during race weekends. The problem is they just started doing it arbritatirly this weekend and aren't really thinking about it very well, and as Windsor said their statements make no ****ing sense either.
Passing under yellow flags is serious, but passing under red is much more serious, I'm surprised he was given the same penalty as Alonso for that.

Well Alonso got 1 second for passing under yellow and 1 second for the Doornbos incident. Schumacher got 2 seconds for passing under red. Of course it could be argued that Schumacher passed 3 cars under red and should have received a 6 second penalty.
And personally I think that just negating Alonso's penalty because Schumacher was being penalised too would just be silly. Last I checked those two weren't the only ones in the race.

Fernando has not had to fight for a championship before...
Oh Mika cracked, and very publicly. I seem to recall him having a bit of a cry behind a tree at Monza after throwing it off the track. He wasn't even racing Michael for the Championship, and yet he made a completely unforced error while leading, something Alonso has yet to do.
Well... you're missing my point, which is perhaps my fault, as I may not have expressed myself well. But I'm glad you mentioned that incident.
First of all, Fernando did this exact same thing just over a year ago... he was leading a race, as a title contender, and then tossed his Renault into the wall at Canada.
In both cases, it was remarkable, because both drivers rarely make such costly mistakes. Like Michael Schumacher, Mika and Fernando seem to get the maximum out of their cars each race weekend, and rarely make mistakes.
At the same time, there was a significant difference in those two incidents, which will illustrate my point.
First, Mika had a very good reason to be dissappointed with himself, because the 1999 Italian GP was one of the last four races of the season, and Mika entered it w/only a 1 point lead over Irvine. Eddie Irvine qual'd 8th, while Mika put his McLaren on the pole. On lap 29 Mika was comfortably leading the race, and Irvine was out of the points in 8th, (points only went down to 6th then) when Mika incorrectly chose 1st gear while entering the chicane, (instead of 2nd gear), locked up the rears, and tossed it off.
In contrast, last year, when Fernando tossed his Renault into the wall at Canada, it was the 8th race of the season, yet he already had 59 points in his pocket vs. the 27 points of his nearest rival. Last year Fernando was never really challenged for the championship.
But Mika Hakkinen, when he won his two championships, he fought all season long, and won them both at the last race of the season. He able to fight for a third championship, and lost that one at the penultimate race of the season.
A charecteristic of Mika during his championship fights, was that he did not crack under the pressure. He did make the mistake at Monza in 1999, and he would make other rare mistakes, once or twice per season, but that is not cracking under the pressure. Michael makes one or two mistakes per season as well under pressure.
Cracking under the pressure is what Damon Hill did. Damon also fought three times for the drivers championship. Damon was a fast driver. But, he appeared to crack under the pressure at times with costly, less than maximum performances on race weekends. Consequently, his primary drivers championship rival, Michael Schumacher, while running in a car that many folks thought was not as fast as Damon's Williams-Renault, was relentless in both getting the maximum from his car on race weekends, but also making remarks in the press as to worthiness of his rival, and other snide things. The net result was that Michael was able to get the maximum result from his car on a race weekend more often than Damon, while Damon's performances were sometimes uneven in heat of battle.
My point is that Fernando must now fight to win the F1 drivers championship, and he has never done this before. He seems to handle pressure well, but the pressure of a battle for F1 drivers championship is much different than what he has experienced so far.
Finally, we know that in this situation, Michael is not only very good, but he is very good at applying psychological pressure as well. If Fernando is vulnerable to the pressure in any way, Michael will look to exploit that.

Big news in qualifying

Qualifying was fairly remarkable...
I was wondering whether or not Renault and Ferrari would have their penalized drivers lay down in the first session to save the motors and tires.
In fact, Michael and Fernando set the first and second fastest times of the day... They really stepped it up!
Here are the times from the 2nd session, where the fastest times were turned:
1) 1:18.875 Michael (then add 2 seconds for penalty)
2) 1:19.364 Fernando (then add 2 seconds for penalty)
3) 1:19.504 Felipe
4) 1:19.704 Kimi (his 3rd session was faster @ 19.59, the only driver to do that)
5) 1:19.783 Rubens (wow!)
6) 1:19.943 Jenson (hello Honda!)
7) 1:20.047 Webber (can't believe he's being dumped down to Red Bull)
8) 1:20.154 Giancarlo (disappointing!)
9) 1:20.231 Jarno
10) 1:20.243 Ralf
11) 1:20.256 Kubica (wow!)
12) 1:20.623 Nick (4 tenths behind!)
So when 2 secs are added to the times of Michael, he ended up right behind Nick in 12th position. Fernando is down in 15th.
Honda - Wow! Faster than the Toyotas...
Kubica - Wow! Faster than Nick... hmmm... The kid may be the real deal.
Rosberg - Omigawd! His time was 1:22, and he didn't make it out of the first session. Webber turned 1.21.3 in the first session, and then that 1.20. So 7 tenths slower in the first session... I don't understand why Williams signed him for next season... he goes slower every race.
Can not wait for tomorrow.

I think it is mainly down ot money for Williams. They went with Toyota for next year because they are getting money (or at least cheaper engines) and Nico is cheap. Webber said before he was dropped he'd like to stay but his pay would have to increase since he's been there for two years. Give Rosberg another year and he'll get up there, but his pace after the first few races has been pretty slow.
I wonder why Schumacher was only penalized two seconds for passing three cars, seems like the FIA didn't know what was going on again.

Formula1.com shows the times from all 3 sessions.
Motorsport.com will show you the grid, which in the end, is really what it's all about.
In the past, the dirty side of the grid has been a big deal here, but I have not seen it mentioned... (but I have not been looking too hard). Does the pole start on the inside, dirty side? If yes, then Schumi is lining up 12th on the clean side, while Alonso is lining up 15th in the dirt.
But apparently they're running some sort of track cleaning system, so maybe that is not as much of an issue now.

Unbelievable.
Kimi just threw the race away. Talk about a bonehead move. I guess it happens to everyone at some point or another.
I'm starting to think Alonso is by far the best driver on the track. He is awesome in the dry, and astonishing in the wet.

im not too pissed about kimi, he already lost the win, and 2nd place to me is as useful as it is to him at this stage.
for today. . . Go Button! Get your first win!
and props to Kubica with a slew of great passes and a point for his first race.

No, he went wide in the turn before.
De la Rosa could get the win now, Button and Alonso need to pit but de la rosa didn't.
